Dracula's castle goes back to a family of royal blood
From Adam LeBor in Budapest

BRAN CASTLE, a towering Transylvanian fantasy of a fortress — where Vlad the Impaler, the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, was imprisoned — will be handed back today to the Habsburg Royal Family.
One of the most popular tourist attractions in Romania, the castle, south of the historic city of Brasov, is popularly known as “Dracula’s castle” because of its association with Prince Vlad Tepes, also known as Vlad the Impaler, who ruled the province of Wallachia during the 15th century and, according to various legends, either stayed in the castle or was incarcerated in its dungeons.

Officials will return the title to Dominic von Habsburg, 68, a US-based industrial designer and grandson of Queen Marie of Romania, along with his sisters, Maria Magdalena and Elizabeth. The handover is seen as a means of demonstrating Romania’s political stability and commitment to the rule of law, especially while questions remain over its likely membership of the EU next year.

Mr von Habsburg grew up in Bran Castle but he and his family were expelled from Romania in January 1948 after the Communist takeover. The family lived in Switzerland and Argentina before Mr von Habsburg settled in Westchester County, New York. “I have very warm memories of my childhood,” he told The Times. “Even now the smell of wood takes me back to those days.”

Looming above a wooded hillside, Bran Castle has featured in several Dracula films. A maze of vaulted corridors and winding passages trace a path through kitchens, bedrooms, dining areas and dank dungeons, where many people were held and tortured.

The castle has been open to the public as a museum for 40 years. The walls are bedecked with hunting trophies, medieval weapons and fine art. It was built in the 13th century by Teutonic knights to protect Brasov, whose inhabitants gave the castle to Queen Marie in 1920. It was nationalised after the Communist takeover.

Mr von Habsburg said that the family planned to keep the castle as a museum. “I don’t plan to come and live here,” he said. “We have to be realistic; times have changed. We want to be honourable, both to our family and to Romania. A house that my mother used to own is now an orphanage, but we will not kick people out, and we will not behave like the Communists.”

Although the handover assures the Romanian Government of good publicity, critics argue that returning one of the country’s many historic castles to aristocrats, who had possession for only a few decades, is a diversion from the much more serious question of restitution.

Mr von Habsburg denied that his family had received special treatment. “Only 12 of 300 hectares [741 acres] of the grounds have been returned,” he said. “If anything, we have had bigger difficulties. You can’t change everything overnight but all of these issues can be solved.”

STAKING A CLAIM

Much of the novel Dracula (1897) is set in Whitby, North Yorkshire, where the author Bram Stoker lived

Count Dracula’s character was partially based on Vlad the Impaler, right, a knight named for his preferred method of killing

Stoker drew inspiration from The Vampyre, by John Polidori, and Carmilla, by Sheridan Le Fanu, a story about a lesbian vampire

Lesbian vampires appear in the films Vampyros Lesbos (1971), Vampire Lesbian Kickboxers (2004) and the forthcoming Lesbian Vampire Killers

Since 1930 there have been 150 films with the name Dracula in the title and 300 others that have dealt with themes of vampires

I hope it's going to stay visitable because it's a really cool place to roam through... I think it will because I doubt anyone would actually live in a castle these days (besides me :-)).

It's a nice castle ... Been there a couple of times . I especially remember a short hallway with mirrors on each side and a room with lots of weapons on the walls . Oh , and a yatagan ...

Though , my memor is blurry , it might have been another castle ...

By the way , Vlad Tepes ruled Valahia (Wallachia) , not Transylvania :)
Go back so skewl . Bwahahahahah x)

Enjoyed the read very much. I try to learn as much as I can about this due to my sons' heritage on their father's side. They still have a great-uncle over there in lock down in a Czechoslovakia. Thanks for the info....

hehe, i'm from Romania, i go visit the area near Bran Castle every summer with my folks...
the Castle is nice really, but it's simply being exploited WAY too much as a tourist attraction, it spoils it really :(
right now, or at least last year when i last visited, it was undergoing some consolidation project(the rock bed under it is crumbling or something like that )

I think it's right to return it to the last owner's heirs. Too bad they won't provide restitution for the land they're keeping, that would certainly help pay for restoring/repairing it. Still it has to be a very neat place to visit. For those that get to go there often, we'll just drool about it...

Being from Romania I can tell you that giving back all the castles...cause there are more...is BS...so what if some of their reletives had at one time....suposedly own Bran? They gave it to the state and the Romanian Government a long time ago. I just hope that the state will make them pay a huge fee or income tax so they will never ask for it again...
the stupidity of the government puzzles me...there is something fishy here...

In other talkings...the castle is great, like all the surrounding arrea, and I invite you all to come here and visit this wonderful country.

I would love to go visit there one day. I've always been facinated with castles. I don't know why, I just think they're cool. But I'm glad that they decided to keep it as a museum. I'm sure alot of people would have sold it off for a profit or closed it down.

Sorry to dissapoint you all, but the Rasnov castle has far more history than Bran and is much more related with Vlad Tepes than Bran ever was. Bran feels like a museum, but Rasnov...we just visited it last week..you can feel the people's thoughts back in his days..the smell of gun powder and if you listen really cloe, you can hear the metal sound of the weapons...it is really great. Watch the pictures that Ahriman and myself will post in a few days, from our trip.

Bran Castle might stay open for tourists...who wants to live there? And the maintainance expences are enormous! The new owner better let the tourists come in or else he will have nothing to show afterwards...
And as Anahita said, Rasnov Stronghold is far more connected with Vlad Tepes (no Dracula! No vampires! Just pure history...) than Bran Castle...

Vlad Tepes' real castle is not Bram Castle, the name of Vlad's real castle is Poenari Castle...it is high in the mountains and is not easy to get to...It is practually in ruins....not much of this castle remains, kinda like some of the indian cliff dewelings located in SW US....If anyone is interested in a Transylvanian Tour....with Vampire intrigue I recently stumbled about a tour group that goes on an 8 day tour in transylvania....the website is www.dractour.com , $2000 per person....I really wanna go.....

However, I am very concerned if now the new (former) owners will close it off to the public.

Has anyone heard any updates?

From what I have read up on Bran's Castle they were not even sure if Vlad even lived in the castle or not. Sounds like a tourist boost to me. I would however, love to go see Romania. Go to the different castles that are connected with Vlad and with out connections to him.

VampyreChef... having been a travel agent 15 years and specializing in gothic related travel.. the ruins you speak of require a not included side trip. (Our tours run 1898pp and include airfare, hotel, trnasfers, and the bran castle tour, tours of transylvannia, and other sites... of course.. this is no depending on wether or not the new but former owners will keep bran castle open)

Vlad did not live in Bran Castle - It was a vacation "home". However I have heard two differnt sides say that he was imprisoned there, or his son was. I figure the bet way to find out.. is to go there.

If I can get some info on any of them and prices, ect. that would be great and very much appreciated. Just message me so I can do the research throughroly.

On a side note --- QueenMorbid, are you planning on maybe posting those pictures?? They would be interesting to see.

This was a fascinating read, and I can see the ups and downs of giving the castle to the former owner. Hopefully this won't end up being a disappointment to those who wish to visit in the future.
Now I'm very interested in seeing these castles and seeing them firsthand. I'm going to have to take a trip over there when I get the time and money. I'd be a fool not to.
