I have rolled this over and over in my mind. Through talking to all sorts of different people on here I have come to wonder.....are we just fundamentally different than main stream people? I know that we (goths, vampires, etc) can tend to look different obviously, but it seems that we think differently as well. I have noticed that we view life AND death differently. We seem to view relationships and friendships differently sometimes too. What say you?
It all depends on the person.
It is said that everyone is different.
However sometimes a certain group who call themselves as different and anti-mainstream,aren't different at all, because they start saying, doing and thinking what the rest of the group does.In that case the anti-mainstream becomes mainstream.
As for me I always felt different.
Yeah it is normal to find people who have different opinions even if they are members of the same community.
After all behind every monitor there is a person with it's own thoughts, knowledge and expiriences.
I definitely agree that as a large group we ARE able to become a mini mainstream if you will. I love that as goths or vampires or lycans or any number of the people on here that there is alot of similarities and yet so much diversity
I belive that i am diffrent than other people, but that is just who i am...
Hehe yes being part of the same comunity makes us having something in common but that doesn't take away from us our individuality.
That's the nice thing of it,because you can learn from people different form you :)
I have learned so many great things since joining VR like what it is to be a psy vamp and what being an empath is and talking to anyone in mainstream about this would get you labeled a whacko...so I love that I can come here and find acceptance and understanding where I used to never have that
Yes most come here for that purpose.I too like the fact that I can discuss certain topics in here which outside the site would be considered as: weird or a taboo.
i believe everyone is different but the groups or subcategories that we fall into, everyone share the same views and feelings as each other.
i hate categorizing myself i'm just me but i find the gothic and vampire communities have the same basic beliefs for the most part that i have. that's just my 2 cents for what it's worth.
i don't think it matters who you are. we are we are our own person. we just have better taste!!
well, i guess that we are different, in the idea that we tend to grow up differently than the "mainstream" people do, whether it is family issues or whatever, and then we find that there are a lot of us. Then we end up categorizing ourselves as a stereotype.
Some would say that we are bizarre, but I say they are the bizarre ones...
I think we are pretty different from the reg. people out there it takes a special group of people to really be different from what main steam deems as ok and I repect that about everyone who decides to call this website home as I do. to be in a crowd of mainsteams is to live a boring life to do something like this website means you arent normal and that is always a good thing to me.
good question...me and my friends think that maybe like.......most ppl get it easy and sum1 who has it hard is more caucious....so maybe thats how we think different...just an idea
being different is what makes us who we are. yes, i'm different from you, just as your different from someone else. are goths and vampires different? i think we maybe a little more attuned to whats going on around us but that maybe be all.
In my opinion, we are different in our views and opinions of certian things like death, darkness, blood... Things that "mainstream" people think are morbid, we (and I am lumping, goths, vampires, wiccans, everything alternative into we) seem to think are beautiful and nessacary. But then on the other hand, i feel that we are the same in the fact that we like to do a lot of the same things. Movies, music, concerts, being with friends and family. So we are different, yes, but not as much as most would think.
This is a very goog question...
It is up to the individual on how they want to portray themselves. Everyone that I have come across on here have their own mindset and opions and beliefs.
For those who are on here, there are goths, and those who are not, there are "vampires" and many that are not.. and so forth.
So my answer would be that we do not portray the mainstream of society... this site represents a varied portion of it at best, but just with common interests...
Well said xtremehate. I think each of you have hit on the way that it is and yes we are individuals and its good when we know who we are and what group we wish to be a part of without having to be forced into one.
Yeah i think we are different, and not just imdividual differences either, when im in college the differences between me and my friends and all the mainstreamers is obvious, and the whole relationships thing is true as well, i got a luvvly bf now who treats me so well, before i went out with a mainstream guy and we didn't really have the vest relationship.
So yeah we are totally different.
EVERYBODY looks different. buisness people, church people, ghettos, punks, goths, emos, scene. we're all different. mabey to us goths those people look wierd. if you judge people by just how you look then you're fucked up. because we just might look more professional when we dress in a suit and tie? ffffuck that. if you have a problem with fitting in as a goth then move to buffalo, there's a huge population
some people are alot more different then others some are as i guess it depends
I feel that our way(goth, vampiric, wiccan, Lycan etc) of life is different and that yes we do view things in a more open minded manner you could say and believe more openly to the different path of many who are your average person.
Anyone who isnt a mainstreamer , is fundamentally different . Goths arent the only "outside of the box" type group . Sorry it isnt exclusive ... Besides , one persons main stream , is anothers underground ...
I just know when I found the Rave, I finally felt like I had come home and found people that actually "spoke" my language. Yeah, I really think we are "different"....Yea different!
wow....look at all the response that this topic has gotten...I wholeheartedly agree that no matter what we like or dont....how we choose to live, dress etc...we are ALL different and that is one of the things that makes this site so cool and YET you can still find people that have some similar interests and you are able to talk to them about things that many mainstreamers wouldnt understand.... This topic honestly came to mind because I was thinking about how even going out to a store or going to work....it seems like there is this huge space between me and everyone else....or have you noticed that when you are out in public we can pick each other out? not just by dress but by attitude, walk and they aura around them? I guess it could be just me but it seems like people of like mind no matter what groups we fall in tend to gravitate towards each other and people outside a group you fall into tend to shun you or avoid you
To a degree many of us are different - many choose to express themselves to the world in many ways. There are many of us that have grown up mainstream and to the outside world/work/family/some friends still appear mainstream... but we have places like VR to truly be ourselves. Like we lead double lives. I know I have been one of these. Nice to have VR and the many friends here that think like I do and can relate with.
People look at everything differently, people in certain groups tend to have views similar to one another. When it comes to goths/vampire/ect. they tend to think...well I don't really know, I can't say what people feel or think because I'm not them. But I do know that it is very different from how I think/feel and very different from everyone else. I guess what I'm getting at is that everyone views things differently, no matter how different they may look on the outside.
You sleep, eat, drink, relieve yourself, love, work, laugh, cry, pay taxes or not, etc. I would say there is plenty in common with the mainstreamers!
i think some of us are, me and my mate dont go out and out advertise what we are or do because unfornatly we are relastic and no most people dont except us for who we are
well yeah - there are real people like me and my friends, and there are normos. norms are wierd - i just dont get them
do we look different or do they, for everyone is different. no matter the generation or era people have posed with this question. and the feelings of the outsiders have talked amongest themselves to resone why. yet we all are different if we were not we would be robots with identical parts and features.
Are you different?
Ask yourself this question...What were you doing Sunday evening at 7PM? Were you watching the Sopranos, the Tony Awards, or America's Got Talent. All three were on at the same time and got high ratings. I was on VR.
Do you really care what happens to Paris Hilton?
We are different, that's why we are on VR and I like it.
I'd have to agree with deathnitegrl. The anti-mainstream groups really are no different from the usual cliques. Every organised group of friends competes with other groups, especially in high school.
yes and no. In many ways there are point that diff. a great deal but people are still people.
You could ask the same question in many ways and the answers would be the same . Such as Is there a fundamental diff. between people who go to chruch VS those that do not. Yes and no or those who drive car VS trucks
Yes we view most things differently i have alot of feelings for this is a thought of mine too. I have always wondered why i was different for the things i love and cherish are all dark and lovely. I am the only one of two in a large family that is the way i am an the other is not as dark inside as me. Fundamentally different yes.
I don't think I do. (I can't speak for everyone, naturally.) Really, I think people are a fairly basic breed when it comes right down to it. We all want the same things; happiness, love ect. We're all afraid of the same things . . . so no.
I think regardless of how some goths I know would love to say that they are somehow special and somehow different, I don't really think so. In the end we're all in this mess together. Might as well get used to that.
Each to his own. we cant make too many similarities, right?
I know I am fundamentally different that my drunken, bar-hopping, and bordering-on-alcoholic peers. When I return to university in the fall, if I get into residence there, I will have to face that same stark contrast between what I am and what they are.
In the past, I've wanted their acceptance and their compassion- now I could care less what they think of me. If they choose to exclude me based on who and what I am, so be it. Those who do so probably were not worth my time in the first place.
I believe the reason why I and others like me are persecuted is because the mainstream, that same group of polo shirt wearing, rap music loving, wastes of air (some are OK, but some truly are a de-evolution of the species) and space on this planet are just jealous of our strength and power.
To play the juvenile,
Fuck the Mainstream.
as a whole, a community, a genre, whatever you want to call it, we are different from mainstream.
but within that whole, are many individuals who share common interests, or characteristics but are all different.
The world is full of different personalities, and unfortunatley we tend to categorize it, that is why although I think this is a ery interesting angle on the question, that I do not thin we are "different from the mainstream."
People are sttracted to others that best suit their beliefs, personality tratits and general attributes. I personally am very contrac=sting to a lot fo people here, I am sure you have all experienced that. Even in this community we are all very different from each other.
There are allsorts of groups in society, all with atereotypical traits i.e. aggression, snobbishness, judging people purely on appearance etc. I do not think it is fair to say that one group is right and rest are wrong, and that everyone in one "group" wants to be there, or that they are all the same- there are countless threads about why "we" hate being stereotpyed, so I don't think "we" should do it either.
I consider myself different from the rest of the people, not only because I'm a vampire, but because of my way of thinking... now, I think that here, we can find people who think and believe in the same things...
Can a certain group of people be considered ant mainstream when they all act the same way? I think that every one is different but they may have the same views or opinnions of life and they are more likely to get to know each other and become friends. While some people, that consider them selves normal, will look down on them they really are not that different. They just want some where to belong and they have different views on life and death. Not reall sure if that helps but it's all that I've got.
DNG i agree...no two people are alike in this world, everyone is different, everyone has different views, opinions & beliefs...if we all had the same things then we'd be boring....personally...I dont care what people think of me, how i am, what im like, what i belief in or how i view things..coz its just me....its what makes us unique & special!
When a group start to act/think/view the same is mainstream!
When a group think/view/act differently...their individuals!
the response to this thread has been great and I have loved reading all your responses....I first want to say this...I dont think that any group of people is "right" or "wrong" or better per se...its more like I dont understand mainstreamers and they dont seem to understand me or many like me....and thats ok...we are all in the same boat....I was more or less curious if anyone else noticed things like this....or has ever had the feeling of being outside looking in
no matter where you go people are people. every group including the "anti-mainstream" has cliques. the only groups i think that are fundamentally different are the ones that promote hate as there is something fundamentally wrong with them.
I dont think it has anything to do with wat we do in here. every person is different and that is were it comes from...each indivual.
Everybody is going to be different in some aspect, whether it be belief, life, or religion.
Even here on VR, people's views on religion and life differ from those of others.
Our differences however, is what makes each and every one of us so beautiful and unique.
Everyone is different. We are all just different from most people in similar ways. Because we share similar intrests so of corse we share similar views.
I agree that we do think differently than most people. But at the same I know that I share some view and thoughts as main stream people. But I guess what it comes right down to it, it's all about the individual person.
