Wouldn't a Vampire Rave profile editor just rock?! Some people use Thomas' MySpace editor which isn't completely compatible. Anyone up to the challenge?
I have had a lot of cool ideas for the Rave much like that, and the ability to do them. The only problem is most of those ideas are usually shut down on first glance and without any thought.
Hah!
I was just about to ask this. Would be very nice to use this editor (if it exists). Would be much easier.
Cancer himself. I don't think this site was meant to be just like Myspace with it's "editors" and stuff.
i am up for something like that it would help me out alot i already have trouble trying to change mine lol this would be so much easier.
People who know how HTML and CSS works can already make their profiles as tacky and nuts as MySpace profiles. This will just make it easier for the rest of us to customize our profiles.
It will make it easier, yes, but like I said, I don't think this site was originally designed as a "member profile" type of site. Even though Profiles on the Rave are highly kickass now, I don't think Cancer had a Myspace type of site in mind when he made VampireRave. Thus I think this editor thing won't happen...but who knows.
The problem with using such editors is that many places place ads to link them back to the site it was made on. These ads tend to cover the logo and can be the cause for your profile to get suspended.
There is a thing like a "generator" where the Premium Members can choose from various skins to use on their profile. If you have any knowledge of HTML/CSS you can customize your profile from those skins, or go all out with something more advanced.
I don't feel we need to have a generator for profile layouts. If anything it teaches people how to do HTML themselves.
Honestly, I am guilty of jazzing up my profile with editors. However, someone above made a point that VR is not to be mistaken for myspace. While simple things like changing the color and size of your font are very understandable, as well as adding in graphics here and there, I don't see the point of fully recreating a profile.
However, it makes it difficult to keep your rating up when so many people on the site simply glance over the look of your profile, rather than reading it and rating it based on the information given in it.
Profile editors shouldn't even be an option, in my mind... unfortunately, it's all part of the rating process.
That's my ramblings on the subject...
I agree with you Abstract.
There is a lot of "extra" code in those editors. A premium membership is quite reasonably priced and offers up much more control over your personal profile, and some themes are offered up from VR.
A VR editor would be convenient for sure, but I personall enjoy working with the code.
You can find tons of tutorials on the web. Google "myspace editor".
I never use ready made layouts. Not because of the ads. I know how to gut them from the code. I just like designing my own.
Not just google can help. What a lot of people don't realize is that in the Member Articles there are various tutorials on how to make your profile snazzy. And they all relate to this site alone.
Also many members on here(myself included) are always willing to help out with a profile.
I fully agree Abstract, There are numerous area's in this site alone where if people took the time and locate or ask questions on.They would not need the use of a generator, which over all is still someone else's work not one's own.For me I am not html savy I still try to the best of my abilities to work html.Unfortunately I have issues with the way html is written so it causes me mind issues which prevents me from doing basic works.
Also wouldnt using a generator instead of reading up and teaching one's self prevent education? Using a generator in my opinion is a lazy person's tool often used for those that do not have the mind set to search hard enough for something to do it themselves and also prohibits enhancing one's mind.
I would have to agree with Cancer because I like this site just the way it is and there are tutorials like the persona above me said that will give you codes and stuff so you can have a better profile like one for adopt a whelp that is how I got my basic background.... I like VR this way I wouldn't really want it to change it isn't meant for that all the other sites are doing that all clashing together like music now days I mean Facebook, myspace, VF is all pretty much colliding and this site is my favorite because it is different.
I have sent a message to Cancer asking him if he would be offended by the existance of a Vampire Rave profile editor. If he is, I'll drop it. If he is open to the idea, I'll make it happen somehow.
i am up for it too... but not sure Cancer would be..He has done so much for this site already... Give him time.. one man can only do so much... :o)
i have to agree with what VampiressRosalie said i am a member of those sites and others and i perfer this one just the way it is
I myself am against having a profile generator added to the site, if everyone took the time and actually sat down to learn how to use html it they would have full control over how they really want their profile to look. I've just started using html and it is now my preferance.
I am up for this thing, if only it is allowed. If it's let through though, I am glad to help with anything you need help with.
When I first joined this site I knew little html and set myself the task of learning it. I admired the pros that DarkAngel30 had made and set about getting mine to that standard. Hopefully I will get there
In the meantime - it is not difficult to learn. Go to the Adopt a whelp pages in House Eternal and start from there.
Learn something!
Yes they have basic stuff in Adopt a whelp so this place isn't just letting you fend for yourself they have stuff if people would just take the time to learn it or read stuff they would know that there is stuff already given to us and the basic background is easier than myspace you get a url of a pic and put it in the space provided. I mean this stuff is pretty easy if you look and learn.
I like Vampire Rave the way it is. I don't think Cancer wanted it to be like Myspace and Facebook.
If you want to jazz up your profile a little, might I suggest asking someone to teach you HTML coding or learn how to do it with the many tutorials on the web. Or you could join as a premium member and get a ready made skin for your profile.
This site has helped me to better my HTML knowledge.
You're a vampire damnit!
In my most humble opinion, VF sucks donkey dick. VR is unique for many reasons and one is the way it is run. I'm not kissing but here in any way. I like it enough to pay for it, enough said.
Education and adding to ones personal knowledge far ouyt ways the benefit of five monutes in a profile creator.
I think we're all willing to help out. Just ask.
You make it sound like a profile editor will change VR at it's core. I think you miss the point. All it would do is give those who don't know HTML and CSS an advantage.
An advantage no, convenience yes. Let's build our community and help our kin by teaching.
I kind of like having to figure things out here without an editor. If everything is easy why would we even try.
if cancer wanted it to have one it already whould have, the site is a Vampire resource and Directory, it is ment to have anything and everything about vampires rather then be a social site well thats at least what i think its ment to be
This kinda goes with the old saying you can feed a man a fish and he will live for a day but teach a man to fish and he can live for many days.
ok the saying is broken down like this.
if you meet someone starving and other then no food they are healthy.
if you hand them food they will live another day but not know how to survive.
if you teach that same person a trade, for example, how to fish. he can obtain his own food and can survive with out the need of someone else to feed him
ok that makes sence now, but how does it relate to the thread o.O...dw im slow at these things im sure ill get it in like 3 days LOL
Some of you speak as though The Prince hadn't already thought of this. He thought of VR enough to create it aye?
If it aint broke don't fix it.
All comments are appreciated. I'm sure the Prince will review this thread if he chooses to.
Despite those if you who assumed that Cancer would not like the idea of a VR profile editor, you were wrong. I just received a reply from him. He sounds quite enthusiastic about the idea.
An editor would be nice..however, I would hate for it to become the main attraction...
i dont really know what a profile editor is, and because of that i wouldnt change the rave for the world.
Ok, so that so many don't seem to know what an editor is I will elaborate.
First it cant mess the rave up just make it look a bit better.
Second, its just a set of code with a user friendly interface.. If you have a premium account you can see the style sheet already .. All an editor does is to come up with the code for you to cut and paste there if you dont know it. So if you don't know the code for the color red and you want your boarder red you tell the editor that you want it red and who thick and it gives you the code to up on your VR style sheet to make it that way..
i would definitely find it useful if the rave had one, i dont know anything about that kind of stuff so it would help me out
it may be a good idea, but im ok with things as they are
I don't think an profile editor would be the thing for VR but actual codes for use novices would be helpful to copy and paste and instuctions on how to manipulate it for your profile. I read through the articles but they are not exactly what a beginner needs. That is what I have been doing.
I could really use something like that -- I've been here over a year -- and still can't put in a background .. lol
I think it's fun learning on your own. and even with an editor I still muck up. People need to stop being so lazy.
Well put Mel. It isn't so hard to learn HTML and there are tons of places you can look to for help like I said before and like others have said.
memnoch123 - want to know what I did? I kept watching the code change back and forth from the VR to the new one to see how it changes ... than I played with it until it finally took........ I can email you my portion of that code if you want and you just substitute your background where mine is.
Message me if you are interested
This is a prime example of what I was talking about!!! a background copy paste! LOL for beginners no editor needed.
I think its more challenging and creative to just write your own codes for your VR pages. Just my opinion.
There are plenty of helpful people here on VR however what I find is that most want to do it for you rather than teach you how to do it which is great however I'm one that wants to learn and not want it done for me.
I personally have a code that I offer to people that want to learn. It has a step by step right in it telling you what each section does.
I still feel that this is a bad idea. It doesn't help anyone learn it themselves.
I still think this isn't needed. But if it's here..I guess it wouldn't hurt anyone. Just don't turn this into Myspace, please.
Yes it would be nice. But when it comes down to it VampireRave is not Myspace. If someone wants to go all out with their page (guilty) they should take the time to figure out the codes. Believe me it will make everything easier in the long run if you just learn the coding.
I'm of the opinion that people should learn how to write the code on their own. Cancer wrote the text entry fields so that they handle basic formatting for those people who don't know what they're doing with HTML. Beyond that, I think you should be willing to learn.
Life does not hand you everything you want on a platter; if you aren't willing to put 15 minutes into learning how to do bold or italic or colored text, why should I help you?
As far as cut-n-paste codes go, they don't do you a lot of good without the knowledge of how to make them your own... they just allow you to make cookie-cutter copies of what someone else already has.
I get sick enough of seeing the same pictures over and over: how much worse would it be if we had to rate a thousand whelps' pages with the same background and the same font style in addition to pictures we've seen on a hundred other profiles?
All I see it doing is creating an even larger sense of boredom with rating profiles, and even fewer people actually stopping to read/look at profiles before stamping them.
People should make their profiles about them. There are already pre-set codes for people to work with when they purchase a premium membership.
Really, creativity and originality should not be rare things, even in the vast world of the internet.
Vampire Rave is unique and trendsetting in many ways, there are a vast amount of things that can be done both on and off the profile.
Maybe instead of pushing to create general codes that anyone can simply cut and paste, and running the risk of copyright problems, people can volunteer to work on other's profiles for them.
Oh and p.s....Cancer can "shoot down" whatever the hell he wants.
I think an editor is a nice idea maybe for those starting out but for me that would take part of the fun out of making my profile. Which I need to work on again soon.
