OK I assume you are speaking of magic circles, LOL

well to me it depends on the reason for the circle. there are protection circles and there are binding circles etc. I myself have used both.

Hey Zav..Well I do have my own ideas on it but think I will hold off before posting them.
I would like to know what makes one choose or draw any certain circle.
And what they feel is the mechanism that enables it to work?

well to me what enables them to work or the mechanism as you say is purely belief and the thought of power they may be used for . I mean it is the same as using the pentagram(sp) symbol that many people in witchcraft or Voodoo uses.

when I use a binding circle it is exactly for that and same as protection circle used for what that very purpose.

depends on how you believe and how you actually work it just an opinion is all. I do know that they work.

Yes I do believe that belief is the strongest source of anything that one may do or want

As to the binding circle I use a spell and chant that goes with my drawinf of the circle, mind you it is not always a big one or small one it depends on what I am using it for that the size is LOL same with the protection circle... can be used in many different ways .

Drawing or tracing a circle allows an area to be consecrated for either temporary or permanent protection and possibly other benefits and allows those withinto carry on with whatever mystical or magical procedures they are taking part in.

There is no size specification--only that he circle be made of a size great enough to enclose the ritual place.

The magic circle is our own source of energy creating it.

Before I do any type of circle I sweep and sage my area of where the circle will be.

I like this reply, thank you. ..when you use your own energy to create them,do you end up with your own designs?
Or do you pick a design first, then put your energy into it?
And the sage,I take it it is used to cleanse the area?

It seems, from the majority of responses, that the average practitioner uses a circle as a security blanket. Not necessarily something that has any real effect other than psychological comfort.

When I think of a magic circle, I think of a pentagram. the 5 points represent earth, air, fire, water, and spirit. I picture a circle drawn in dirt or salt, with a star drawn in the middle.

dark whisper - that is a very alchemical way of viewing the magic circle.

The four near basic elements with which we deal are indeed Earth, Air, Water, and Fire. The fifth element, or Quintessence, is that which is in all of us. These five elements are of course contained within the circle that is the Universe.

To me a magickal circle is just that it is a sacred place for you to gather your energy alone or with coven members or what have you.... it is a special place where nothing you say or do is wrong because it is yours to do with and what you want....

when protecting the house make sure to do it within the waxing moon, walk deosil sprinkling rosemary (for example). For an extra bonus, sprinkle fennel (or flax, not as potent though) seed for invisibility.

Well for me generally a circle is cast once a month like clockworth with me for a dull moon ritual sometimes there are 5 of us and at times there can be 20 or 30 of us. We call the quarters The circle is made, as we walk around in a circle the energies raised from us as we chant to the full moon is raised as we chant as we walk round and round as we then see the silver beams of light shining down upon us. So between the energy we have raised amounst our selves and that be given off from the moon the air and the fire in the middle, water is offered up and then we thank the quaters close our circle and pour the water back into the earth.

I don't know what it does for others but a magic circle for me is the inner revolving source of energy that circles inside the depths of my very soul. That's the pool I dip into when I need to lift my spirits above the extensive walls of the darkest tragedies I may face, such as the death of a loved one. Without such a circle I or perhaps some others, wouldn't be here. It's something I feel exists in us all, conscious or subconciously...it's just some fail to embrace it and it's powers.

Alone, no but that is just my opinion. The circle has long since been used in many different religions for rituals and such. It is the energy that you place around it or in it that gives it power. The cone of power that is used upon a FMRis raised but as HHW say why just circle. I mean sure i suppose we could make a square or a triangle, has three sides could signify the triple goddess mother maiden crone.

well the size is not important it is just for what area you want to use while your doing your encantation / spell or ritual (whatever one chooses to call it.)

I feel the circles have been around for eversince the times of ancients. I mean some peole actually put a circle aropund there home / property etc. for protection ot to ward off unwanted evils or preditors of any kind whether it be human or not...

It is like how we would use a fort or fortress as a barrier to protect or to keep out or to keep in something or some one etc..

The Circle also represent completeness, as the life of circle it comes together as a whole. I mean when I use the circle for whatever reason (which are many) LOL
It is just that for completeness, closure you could say.

you have to have the beginning with the end as in everything of nature... I mean I am Wiccan / amer.native Indian and we use the circle for many things in my family as well as cleansing the area with sage and such before hand.

well to me if you do not close a circle and are doing something that could affect more than what you want it to affect it could be dangerous or just not a happy thing or.... Ok lets say I am doing a protection spell on my home ... yet I do not CLOSE the circle then what is the use of the protection if something / someone could still cross over into said place . It is like closing the door and locking it to me when you make a complete circle. Very much like the Voodoo Spells and stuff it has to be closed . does that make sense? hope so...

Well I feel yes, I can pinpoint the Energy as it were, for whatever it is I am doing, I mean to me that is one of the main purpose of a circle to focus and contain your energy to what your using it for.

The patterns are used for each indiviual practice to me. I have certain ones I use for different results you could say LOl just as one uses a pentegram or even a celtic cross symbol or christian cross symbol there are many different things to use just gotta find your own *niche'* as it were that works best for you and for what your doing .. just how I believe and my opinion.

yes I do.... I mean when using the different ones they each Ifeel have a stronger energy or the right energy you could say for what it is I wish to use it for, I know it may sound corny or just whacked. LOL Yet, to me each one is done for a certain reason and therfore certain powers for said spell.

Meaning, does a hexagon hold more power than a circle?

I think that a circle is definitely psyhologically powerful as a protector because of the "security blanket" feeling. Representing completion in the person's mind.

The hexagon is a much more common natural occurrence than a perfect circle, which means if you can mimick the creation of those hexagons, you may be able to yield that same power.

this is true yet is a hexagon not within a circle ? LOL I mean mine are that I use .... so it is of course how one believes and what they believe to hold the power or most power within ones own mind as you say ....

I feel it is mind over matter no matter what :) which carries with it alot of faith.

What I was referring too, Kryptlove, actually is the resonance of the planets. The geometrical pattern created by Saturn's frequency is a hexagonal shape.

I have a question about the circles. This may have already been put here and I just overlooked it. Do you have to use something physical to create the circle or is it of an inner energy type field . I hope you understand what I am trying to say or ask.

fyrechyld,my answer is no,you dont need them. And I say this with conviction because of my own experiences.

What I feel they are, is one,the result and manifestation of an energy interacting with a medium that records it.And two, when you see them drawn, they are a representation of an energy needed and associated with the activity at hand..ie a ritual. I believe most of the time, peeps cannot get their magic to work because they choose a symbol without really understanding whats behind it..and end up with the incorrect frequency..not unlike a radio.

It would have been nice if you had said so before HHW.
So if I give you different examples you would know by sight the frequency? And what that frequency can be used for?

as in what?

i used them, casted circles all the time, i did the closing and opening and can't walk out unless you cut a door thing....i did everything else a Wiccan, Heathen, Odinist, etc does.

i just finally realized that is for people who need the visualisation of being protected. .....

does that answer your question

as i said, i have heard of pentagons, triangles and trapazoids being used. i have never used either

Those circles will be as usefull and strong as the person who made them beleives and is strong.

Otherwise they are useless and simply a circle.

Magic circles, interesting topic. I have used the prtection circles around my home and in areas around my land that I have set up for energy. What I mean here is, I have one spot on my land that has a over whleming feeling of energy. I have set up a circle of rocks around this area and have placed various gems and crystals around the area. I have also placed a protection circle around it as well.

They are for protection, and many other areas. Yes it relies on how you feel or your belief there of.

"You mean it protects you when you are doing a certain ritual?..but protects from what? You dont keep a bubble around you on a constant basis?" your questions

The protection circle that is placed around the circle of rocks is only there when I am within the circle. I use it just to keep any unwanted or nagitve energies out while I am doing my rituals. In todays world I have thought about keeping my self or my children in a bubble all the time but if I did that we wouldn't be able to learn anything. :-)

In the area that I am in its not per se more negative then the other. Where I run into my problem and the reason for the protection circle is because of the wondering spirits that love to roam my land.
