I was reading yesterday a fascinating book called the nocturnicon, with in it's pages it was talking about the difference between Daemons and Demons.

How Daemons where sort of like angels except they where a signed to us when we where born to protect us and sort of guide us along, the Daemon might have been ancient or the Daemon might have been born when we where.

And how Demons where sort of bad spirits who wanted nothing more than to latch on to a person and do them harm by causing them chaos and pain.

My question is this: do you believe Daemons and Demons are one in the same or do you think Daemons are kind of like angels looking out for us? or maybe you think some thing completely different?
I love to hear all of your opinions on this subject.

Thank you AngelsMort.

The concept of daemons... In the "His Dark Materials" trilogy by Philip Pullman they had daemons, only they were like just a different part of the same person..

I don't understand how they could be the same though?

I like the concept of daemons being "assigned" at birth - kinda like guardian angels, just from day one!

I guess it would depend on how the daemon/demon interacted with the person, that may be crucial as to classifying them as a daemon or demon.

Diamons or deamons are only the same as deamons in that they are part of someone.Beyond that the similarites cease.

Demons are raw,uncontrolable emotion.

Diamons supposedly help .

Why certainly. Someone give us some of those phosphorescent genes that have recently been spliced to mice DNA and we'll shed light like mad. Demon and daemon were once used interchangeably. The former came to English from medieval Latin, while the latter was from classical Latin. The earliest use appears to have been in the phrase daemon of Socrates, which was his "attendant, ministering, or indwelling spirit; genius". That was in the late 14th century. It was a short time later that the term demon came to refer to "an evil spirit" by influence of its usage in various versions of the Bible. The Greek form was used to translate Hebrew words for "lords, idols" and "hairy ones (satyrs)". English Theologian, John Wycliffe, (who translated the Bible into English) translated it from Greek to English fiend or devil. This is how the evil connotation arose.

By the late 16th century, the general supernatural meaning was being distinguished with the spelling daemon, while the evil meaning remained with demon. Today daemon can mean "a supernatural being of a nature intermediate between that of gods and men" or "a guiding spirit".

Daimon, Daemon and demon are all the same things but just spelled differently by language. Demon is the anglicized version. They have different meanings only by culture and belief system. The first two are older spellings and deal with something more in the area of a muse or some say like we would think of as a Guardian Angel. Socrates had one and each enlightened scholar was said to be inspired by one. Yeats writes a lot on this issue. Demon as we know now is thought of as an evil spirit or fallen angel offspring. Its merely the perceptions of the culture that each person views the meaning of the word. This last one is influenced mostly by Judeo/Christianity and other such associated groups. Most cultures have their bad spirits they believe in and refer to them as devils or demons but its not the original meaning of the word from what I have researched. Words evolve over time in meaning depending on the usage of it in the time period.

There are a lot now since we have the "new age" which really is a misnomer that write a lot about this sort of thing from various perspectives. Really to understand where the writer is coming from one must learn about the author and their beliefs.

I agree with you for the most part LND.However,I feel that despite the spellings, I think they might have always been referring to two diffrerent types of entities..because by their sheer nature alone, they couldnt be one in the same.

As per the refrence to the golden compass Cherry that is a good point the daemens in that were connected to each child to protect them, as per Demons being something of another. I have heard of that before as which was already stated. But like much other things everyone and every different civilization views things different.

Do you think it would make a difference to someone's daemons and demons if they nurtured one more than the other?

Well i guess it would depend on which they listened to.
No different from your conscence (sp?) but i guess in th end it would depend on how strong your will power and your faith is.

here is the information that i found that covers daemon a bit more.

Daemons were important in Neo-Platonic philosophy. In Neoplatonism, a daemon was more like a demigod rather than an evil spirit, as Eros was described as in-between the gods and humankind. In the Christian reception of Platonism, the eudaemons were identified with the angels.

Cyprian was debunking the gods of the pagans as a euhemerist falsehood in his essay On the Vanity of Idols, but he had this to say of daemons:

“ They are impure and wandering spirits, who, after having been steeped in earthly vices, have departed from their celestial vigour by the contagion of earth, and do not cease, when ruined themselves, to seek the ruin of others; and when degraded themselves, to infuse into others the error of their own degradation. These demons the poets also acknowledge, and Socrates declared that he was instructed and ruled at the will of a demon; and thence the Magi have a power either for mischief or for mockery, of whom, however, the chief Hostanes both says that the form of the true God cannot be seen, and declares that true angels stand round about His throne.
These spirits, therefore, are lurking under the statues and consecrated images: these inspire the breasts of their prophets with their afflatus, animate the fibres of the entrails, direct the flights of birds, rule the lots, give efficiency to oracles, are always mixing up falsehood with truth, for they are both deceived and they deceive; they disturb their life, they disquiet their slumbers; their spirits creeping also into their bodies, secretly terrify their minds, distort their limbs, break their health, excite diseases to force them to worship of themselves, so that when glutted with the steam of the altars and the piles of cattle, they may unloose what they had bound, and so appear to have effected a cure. The only remedy from them is when their own mischief ceases.

The dæmons are real enough — "the principle is the same, which misleads and deceives, and with tricks which darken the truth, leads away a credulous and foolish rabble" — it is relying upon them that is deceptive. In this way the dæmons passed easily into Christian "demons."

At birth we are assigned a angel, a inner guide. Do you not ever hear that little voice inside of you...that tells you you made a bad choice, but go on with your choice, and it is the wrong choice?

i remember reading once, most ''demons'' were ancient regional gods, depending on the people, the strength of their faith and their gods in general, as to whether the christians made it a saint, or turned it into a demon

I'm inclined to agree with Oceanne's posts. I'd also like to mention that (unless I'm wrong) daemon is Old English whereas demon is modern English :)

Demon -Evil spirit
Daemon- Supernatural entities between humans and gods, like ghosts.

My conjecture to the comment about the movie: The Golden Compass...Do you always believe what movies tell you?

As for the two definitions of the same name, just under differant surnames, Just read what Oceanne as well as a couple of others have already posted...Nuff said!

Whats a little confusing though..or at least it was to me,was that while the two "divine spirits" are different in some aspects,in others they are not.The daimon ,I had always heard was a link between the powers that be and man, seeing how man could not withstand the full presence of a god force. And demons are kinda the same only raw emotion unleashed.

'Dæmon' is an old-English form of our contemporary 'demon'. As with most words spelled with the 'æ', our modern English effectively chopped off the 'a' and left the word as is, for pronunciation purposes moreover.

(The following in no way shape or form reflects my own personal views on any religious edifice.)

AND, I would like to disagree with what was said about dæmons in reference to The Golden Compass. The His Dark Materials Trilogy by Philip Pullman did sport the idea of a dæmon, but not in the sense that they were evil or that they were protectors of any sort.

They served to illustrate what Pullman thought the Catholic Church, or 'Magisterium' in the series, was doing to its followers in accordance with their souls/free will.

It became one of the Magisterium's great projects to find a way to sever the bond between the individual and his or her own dæmon(free will). When the 'little cut' was completed the effect was a distraught dæmon and a zombie-like human with absolutely nothing to live for, as it seemed.

Pullman was an atheist and directed this, his literature, toward the younger of the world's population in his own attempt to undermine the church.
