I know the Vampire clans put forth by White Wolf Publishing don't really exist but a lot of people seem to identify with them and consider themselves part of those clans. I'm curious about how the people that do identify with them feel about the fact that White Wolf did away with the Masquerade and the majority of the clans in it. They now have the Requiem and it has 2 new clans in it and the 3 remaining clans from the old system have been changed somewhat. For those people do you find you identify more with the old clans than the new ones? There were a fairly large number of clans completely done away with those of you that identified with those do you ignore the changes or do you try to fit in with the new clans?
Wow I have been out of the loop, I have always built Malkavian decks when I played The card Game, I hope they have a card set for the new Vampires. I will look up the new structure..
I don't know about the card game at all but in the RPG the only surviving clans are gangrel, nosferatu and ventrue. The surving clans have had some minor changes. What I'm mainly concerned with are the people that applied this to their personal lives and how this will or won't affect them.
Man that sucks because I always delt with that of the Malkavians. Insane and a loner. That was the best clan that VTM had. Why rid of the older ones just because you have newer clans? I don't think i'll be getting the newer one now. The older clans were just fine. The Toreador's Ravenos, Brujah, ect.
The only thing I can figure is to sell more books. They may bring some of the other clans back eventually in supplemental books. TSR and WoTC have both been good about doing similar things to AD&D.
It does create a desolve.. commonly used in games to restructure stagnant game play (involving people power tripping glitches in character-types. It also expands for the newer player to avoid feeling light years behind the more seasoned (jaded) players.
Just wasn't interested in the "progress" they made in eliminating so many of the clans. I've always felt very comfortable with the Toreador clan and it's artistic and social styles.
In truth a lot of writing evolved in my case, from the games as my fellow players would write our own stories to flesh out events from the game.
I haven't played the game, but I know a lot about it, and the clans. I honestly feel I can identify better with the newer ones than the old. The old clans have their appeal... but with the new covenants, like "Lancea Sanctum", I've found my niche :)
The Lancea Sanctum is an organization which grew parallel to Christianity, therefore commonly being mistaken for a vampiric equivalent of it. They believe Kindred (the word vampires use for themselves) have a role in the Divine Providence: that of the ultimate predators. As vampires, they're to prey upon humans, thus unleashing God's Wrath upon the unworthy and representing tests for the pious.

I wasn't allowed to play, becaue I was considered an abomination. Having both lycan and kindred characteristics. I was told, that if I was allowed to play, that I would be hunted down by both sects and destroyed. So much for open minded role playing, huh.
Well a gangrel could be said to have traits of both in the old and new system someone didn't know the game well. I'm sure there are werewolves in that portion of the world of darkness game system that have some traits that could belong to vampires, though I can't say for sure. I personally never played the werewolf aspect even though in high school I was accused of being "a werewolf in mid change". I've always identified with vampires more. While playing vampire the masquerade in the past I usually played a brujah because I identified more with that clan when it came to real life I never considered myself a brujah nor did I try to act like one. The game system new or old to the best of my knowledge doesn't allow for a hybrid but if you really wanted to play one bad enough a good game master would work with you to create one for the game unless they felt that it would upset the game balance too much. For me personally I don't buy the concept because it didn't exist until "Underworld". In all the myths and legends it's not possible. That being said that doesn't mean I wouldn't entertain the notion for a game because after all it's just a game. I can also understand a person identifying with both after all they are both predators of the night.
clans are good but i havent found one were i belong o well i gess i still a rouge
It's a 'game'... so how bad can an abomination be? And since it is a game... you can choose lycan or vampire on your own. There shouldn't be any problems there.
Well darn I am upset now cause I always was into the Toreador clan and it's artistic and social styles that they presented did not know that the clans had changed , I guess I need to do some catching up huh? LOL
You have the same thing with the Daeva clan as the Toreador :)
I created a were-vamp creature when I played D & D in college, back in the early 90's. I have always loved the concept. Something that I have liked well before Underworld. I also liked that movie though. It is the only time the idea of hybrids are broght up, at least to my knowledge.
i cant seriously think that ppl base themselves after this its like lending credence to the hollywood mythos
I have to agree with the post above... I don't think people base them selves off of it.
i never liked requiem the system wasnt the best along with the fact that it basically was a brand new vampire game yet it was based on things that had to do after Gehenna, yet it wasnt.Instead of just making requiem into the fabric that its the aftermath of Gehenna
ive seen people who try and imitate the quote unquote clans from the books,i dont roleplay
I know one house of maat where real vampires do exist in those areas.
it has one house of maat too to treat its bold members and they are sang by current generation's gothic tradition they do use safe mathods and safest amount of the energy in the drink.
it has its own site too. I was member there but was expelled when i was calming down two other who were expelled coz that time i was not expelled and i was loyal blood member that time... and when they knew that in sympathy i attached to those who expelled, they by bad politics expelled me too. its not the matter coz ego creates such thing in the name of discipline...
but the true clan exist and there are many such clans... I dont mention it here coz I must be loyal to the VR.
If you don't believe that people do this then you obviously haven't spent much time on this site or others like it.
i beleave they concider them selves part of those clans becouse the want to feel there part of a family that excepts
them for who they really are and the feel they cam be them selves without jugement.
Since most living vampires "awaken" on their own I'm not sure how the clans would work for them. For the fictional vampires in the RPG they are "embraced" by a vampire (their sire) and they belong to the clan that their sire does. If a living vampire is "awakened" by a living vampire assuming that vampire follows a clan belief there is nothing to bind the newly "awakened" vampire to the clan of their sire should they choose to have a clan belief. So I'm wondering if those that have clan beliefs only try to awaken people with similar beliefs?
i understand how one can identify with the white wolf clans, even if im not roleplaying. i identify most with the old toreadore, and ventrue clans. i was disappointed to find the toreadores are now gone.
So did the changes in the game affect your outlook on life any? Do you find yourself sticking with the old clans or trying to fit in with the new ones? I am asking in terms of your everyday life not within the game. Within the game you would obviously have to conform, find people that play by (or include) the old rules or stop playing.
Me, i see roleplay as another way for hollywood to make money
A few identify with the clans because they identify with the characteristics of the specific clans, however, real vampire houses do not have such clans. Everyone is as different as a snowflake. We may look similar, however, if you look close you can see the difference. But, as a snowflake we do not last long.
Skylar: How does Hollywood profit from RPGs? I don't know of any RPG company that's headquartered in Hollywood. I don't know of any RPG company that is owned by a movie company. There has been less than a dozen movies and only two TV series to the best of my knowledge that have had anything to do with RPGs. In both cases that's far less than 1% of the industry. Most of the movies that had anything to do with RPGs were initiated by the RPG company involved. One of the two TV series was initiated by the RPG company. I would say RPGs benefit more from Hollywood than the other way around.
Doru: I don't think that's completely true. While it is unlikely that a "living vampire" house would have multiple clans in it, it is possible for it to be based on one clan. An earlier poster mentioned just such a house. If a "living vampire" that considers them self to be of a certain clan starts a house, it is likely that house will be based on that clan. Such a house would likely only accept members that also consider themselves to be part of that clan. I'm not saying that houses like that are common place within the vampire community just that they can and probably do exist.
White wolf is Seattle based, the vampire community, do they turn down monetary contributions? Do they hand out free literature, printed with money out of their pockets?
i think everything has changes and some go with the flow to adjusting to the new clans then there will be those who keep to their old clan and not evolve with the new ones
good points dabbler though the vampire community is far less organized than most and only a few groups are truly in it for profit
Profit is only one motivation, promotion is another, yet a note can be made that like religion, their is a social benefit from groups sharing common concepts. Networking, if I have a House, and I have an Author in that House, i just make that reference in a collective meeting. Role Payers are a Social Phenom, packing Conventions annually. Some of those players enjoy the upgrades, in a stagnant system. I look forward to the expansions in the Card game, if any come out.
I was always a Gangrel when I played but I stop playing after the changes.
Yes change can be good but there is also something to the saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it" -unknown. I don't know if they changed the other aspects of the world of darkness as much. I'm guessing they probably lost as much as they gained by making such radical changes. I know if it were anything other than Vampires I probably would have lost interest. At least they didn't completely change the game mechanics. I hope they are bringing out supplements with more clans because with only five clans now I think it will be more difficult for people to find their niche. The addition of the covenants was good and helps diversify the clans somewhat. I have a feeling that those that have access to the old books may try to incorporate some of the old clans as some will probably not wish to continue without them. I know a lot of people really identified with the old clans. I think it will take some time before that is true of the new clans. I still see the old clan symbols on a lot of profiles.
