Maybe I am just being slightly dence, but what is this UTC offset and how does it effect your prfoile, if it does? Just a question, of which the answer may be stupidly obvious ;-)
Thanks x
It has to do with y'r time zone....I had trouble getting mine at first, but with Cancers help i was able to find it...If you go to Ask Jeevs or in Google (ask Jason he's the 'Google Whore' around here LOL JK Jason)...you can type in what's the UTC offset for (y'r city, or a big city nearby)? and with a little digging you can get it...
It sets y'r time in y'r profile/posts or on messages, if you want them to be in real time, if it makes no difference then you don't have to set it....
...did I get that right Cancer???
Oh I see.. thanks for letting me know!
Well im in the UK so im just London GMT, so I suppose it doesn't really matter where you are, it doesn't effect anything.
thanks again x
wow dami, thanks for clearing that up. you explained it quite nicely.
Should sort mine out really. I'm 5 hours ahead of current posting times...
/me tweaks her profile
For anyone in England/United Kingdom:
GMT offset = 0
BST offset = +1
yep dami u got it right. i had to ask cancer too, i was kind of confused with that UTC thing at first....
mine is -5
And go googling, if you want to see what the moon is like in your neck of the woods.... i love that addition, helps me to tell weather it's a good night to go hunting or not, or just grab a few bottles from the fridge.. fridge offset about -2... nice and chilled.. mmhmmm,..
Dhampir, if you like weather, moon stuff, and feel brave, you can customize your desktop with www.samurize.com to add those features on your screen, updates automatically too :)
Ah, thanks for the info, drkwomen, but will it slow down my pc, alot tend to, i don't have a screen saver or anything, i liek to keep this baby running at full power... *grins*
well i never back down on a test.. and don't like machine getting the better of me.. lol DL now...
lol.. all welcome.. thank you.. }:0>
i just can't get enough of new things
There are 2 spots that require a user to enter a UTC offset. One is for the sunrise/sunset code. The other is to synch up all the VR times with your local time.
The VR server is in CST (-6 UTC). If you're on the east coast, your offset would be -5. If you put -5 as your offset, every time throughout the entire site will convert to -5 automatically.
As an example, I make a post to the Forum. The VR server records the time as 11am. This would be 11am Central time, because that is what the VR clock is set to. Now Moreish, over in Australia looks at my post and see's the post time as 11am. Now she can either convert that in her head to figure out at what time in Australia I made that post... Or she can set her UTC offset to +10 (I'm guessing here... Australia has a few zones). Once she did that, when she looked at my post time, it would say 9pm - which is in her local time.
I am glad someone asked this! I was sitting here thinking for 10 minutes the other day on what it was.. lol.
I am glad someone asked this as well. Of course I see mine is -5 since I live on the east coast.
Since the majority of our users are in the Eastern Time Zone, I set the system default to -5.
Actually, I don't have to Google this one. I work with time in my job every day. I'm, by trade, a professional mariner, and in that capacity, I'm versed in celestial and electronic navigation. Without time, there would be no Longitude. Further discussion on this MIGHT be found in my journal pages if I get a wild hair up my ass. Until then, feel free to message me if you're interested. ANYway...
Something that noone has mentioned is that UTC stands for Universal Time Coordinated. For the record:
UTC: Universal Time Coordinated
GMT: Greenwhich Mean Time
Zulu: the letter designation for the +-Zero time zone (All time zones are designated by letter, except L. there is no Lima time zone. If you want to know why, message me)
Any UTC, GMT and Zulu are all the same name for +-Zero timezone. No offset.
I've added two links to my profile. The last link gives a very nice explanation of time-zones for the curious. The second to last link is a world timezone map with the numbered offsets in hours (and half hours for Canada! eh?).
Australia has some 1/2 zones too.. As well as a few islands.
