does anyone extensively know anything about sleep? I used to work in the silver service (waiting on posh people) and i once did a 15 hour shift. from 12:00 till 03:00 the next day... while working i got very tired... but then came back stronger as if i didn't need the sleep... right now it's 00:05 and i'm tired. but i've got a lot of work to do. and i'm staying up. I'm wondering if this is a common thing in all humans, and if there's a full explanation someone can give me?

I have found it that whenI don't sleep for a long period of time that my body makes energy to keep me going out of no where.

i'm asking why the body does that... and how...

but on another note which i recall somehow. i once heard that in a foreign country somewhere they awoke sleeping babies as soon as they fell asleep... eventually (apparently) they stopped needing sleep and stayed up all the time...

i found it interseting yet cruel.

Gorey, what you went through is a natrual process, when your body exceeds a number of extra hours awake, it kick in a overtiredness mechanism, and (see if you noticed) it kicks you in a boost, of course you get alot of energy in one time back as if you did in fact sleep but you also notice you become more reactive perhaps even a little more nervous, its all pretty natural in the meantime your body has turned to you stored fat as energy source...try not pushing your luck with it though, and try laying down, you'd sleep like a stone in your state now lol

so basically... when you are tired and you try to stay awake, your brain looks for fuel, it see's the extra fat (looks at tummy and sighs) and uses it, and it's that fuel searching and the burning of it for extra energy that wakes you up... I'm feeling a little tired now... but i've been eating pick and mix for about 20 minutes now... i think in another 20 minutes i'm gonna be more awake than i was at work this morning!

i'm guessing that doing this regularly slowly breaks your body clock up and such. So that eventually you just collapse from overworking the body? and you'll probably lose a fair bit of weight if you're burning fat for energy to stay awake...

yea its really interesting. when your really tiered suddenly you get a surg of energy. ist like your body has a "roll over" system. like when you sleep alot your body will store the energy for a time when you need some extra. that maybe why sometimes when we sleep alot we are still tierd when we wake up. it like we have to start over again and "fill" back up on all the energy we have used up. kinda like a cell phone. like a minuites plan or the phone battery. lol i know it sounds wierd and maybe it make no sence to anyone else but i understand itt..lol ~peace~

The surge is called a second wind... I heard if you miss a nights sleep, it takes your body up to 3 weeks to make up the rest it missed... that screws up your sleep pattern big time...as does shift work.

Being one who suffers from Insomnia, I encourage you and everyone, not to force y'r self to stay awake, even if you lay down for an hour or two, then get back up to finish that bit of extra work ... y'r body needs for you to physically lay down to "recharge Y'r batteries" so to speak. So it can fully relax and build the energy. Forcing myself to stay awake is not why I have insomnia, but believe me, it's even more hell on y'r mental and emotional state of being if you do not allow y'r body to rest when it is asking you to ...

I used to sleep only a few ours a day, go to sleep at 03h and wake up at 06, and go to school...than I found a better functionong method...I dont sleep for 48 h and than sleep 15. That works for me `cos I have a problem falling to sleep.
And yeah it is a strang thing that I feel les tyred when I do not sleep than when I slept normaly. The problem is that this cann`t last forever. After a long time of that rythm of not sleeping i had problems with my apetyte, (lost 10 kg) and than i got to a period of just sleeping...All i wanted was my bed!And i spent about a week or two in it(all alone ) :)...Now I am back at the *normal*... sleep 5 do not sleep 24-30...that works for now...

Sounds like me..
Like 3 years ago, I was really in love with a girl.. Only problem was that I could only speak with her at night (on chat).. Well, she went to bed around 6 than, so she could sleep 2 more hours before going to school. But I coulnd't sleep, cuz I had to go to school early :P
So it happend that I didn't sleep for 3/4 nights, and then I slept the whole weekend.. Also happend that I fell asleep at school :/
Well.. These days I sleep normally again :) Still have no problems with sleeping only 3 hours a night for weeks though :)

It is all to do with your pattern. You can train your body to function of very little sleep. It is physically possible to start 'tripping' after been awke, usally forced for 50hrs plus.. thats freaky, highly not recomended. I have done what banshee has, when i can't sleep, i do the two days awake half a day asleep. I don't work at the moment so it's easy to form a bad sleeping habbit. But if you're in a routine then sleep should come alot more naturally. I have grown used to been awake for 40 hrs plus, and it does not do me much harm (that i can notice anyhow).. Also bad sleeping can be an underlying illness.. usally serious. At the end of the day, if you get enough sleep to function in a normal way, then it's fine. But hell, i'm like a bear with a sore head when i wake first thing. SOme people think its just pure lazyness, but say, for me, its due to depression, why the hell do i want to be awke thinking and dreeding every moment when i can be asleep to dream the evil away...

I'll take a two hour nap when I first get home from school, then go to bed between midnight and 1, then get up at 6.
I have a hard time falling asleep too, so I've found my own blend of chamomile tea helps make me drowsy

about the waking up the babies

thats is cruel.....babies needs sleep so that their brains can develop...if they dont sleep, i think they run the risk of being mentally challenged or something....sleep is very crucial to the brain....and also for adults as welll,,,,if u dont sleep, your body will eventually shut down.

i didnt sleep for 9 days in a row once....i almost died, i felt as if my body was being pounded by a giant hammer---

anyway sleeping patterns...it depends on the way your body adapts .....to your daily routine.....but always you will have to sleep eventually and at least meet the minimum requirements that your body needs to run normally.

Found some really interesting info about undersleeping as it relates to weightloss.

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=305906&page=1

It's odd, though. This article was written in December, and I just saw the video thingie for it on ABC news, this morning.

Anyway...get your sleep! It's good for you!

Right now, I've been awake for three days. After about 16 hours of not sleeping, I'll start to get tired, then exhausted...And then four hours afterwards (if I've forced myself to stay awake for that long), I'll reach something I call the "Point of No Return". I'll get a burst of energy and be able to keep myself awake without being tired for up to four days. It's really odd, but it has something to do with the body's internal clock.
If you stay awake the whole time your body is used to sleeping, it's normal wake-up time will still happen, even if you didn't sleep.
