The eternal lure of the older vampire seems to weigh heavy in the literature. Do you think it's a parasitical relationship or is there more symbiosis, mutual benefit? Do you think it follows the same rules as human may-december relationships? What dangers are inherent for the senior vampire? The younger vamp?

Old vamp, young vamp. Spring, winter. In with the new, out with the old, except in vampire fiction the aged vampire is either ennobled or feared, but they're usually sought after by the younger bunch.

The older Vampire's attraction to youth... younger blood is more pure. Remember, the Vampire's main quest is to prolong his "immortal" live. So much for May-December romantic fantasy.

I've wondered about this myself. In both Vamp relationships and human vamp relationships. Just because somebody doesn't look 200 years old doesn't mean they haven't lived 200 years, how does it work with say a 19 year old?

Seems like it would be difficult to put that vast amount of experiance aside.

I believe that both the younger and the older vampire would have a relationship in which they could both feed off of each other, so to speak. In other words, their relationship would be, in ways, mutually beneficial. For example, while the older vampire experiences the youth that it craves, the younger can experience the strength, wisdom, and power of his or her elder.

I hope that makes sense to you.
(My thoughts on this are quite difficult for me to put into words)

I would think it has to do with expierance. Though the fact that the purity between the younger and the older is a factor, the experiance from the individuals life being "immortal" and the paths that they have traveled.

The younger vampire might have gone to places to give themselves that lifes experiance, to mature where attributes were once shallow and unlearned.

Whereas the elder vampire had indeed traveled those places, met numerous individuals and as such has an extraordinary intellect when it comes to various areas of discussion. The philosophy between the two would be a welcome conversation to see where their heads actually were.

I would think the two of them would have an excellent five hour conversation to say the least.

Several of you used the word "purity."

What do you mean?

As we age... are exposed to food additives, chemicals and even prescription medications, our blood becomes less "pure" and that can effect/mutate the life force drawn from the younger donor.

Just like the "Immmortal" in Highlander, with each battle he "mutated" somewhat.

experience gives one knowledge
and dare i say wisdom
one learns to avoid certain things
and where to locate others
a vampire who has lived a long undeath is apt to be more crafty and world wise then one newly awakened also an elder vamp is considerably more dangerous even to other vampires as power struggles often arise
this can be observed in literature whenever groups of vampires are discussed
and just as in human relationships
power has allure to the young

Lordpeace, I think you've honed in on three important aspects: age, knowdedge, power. So that would be the attraction of the young vamp to the old.

But what's in it for the seasoned vampire in dallying with the vampling?

Any parallels to be drawn with human relationships of similar disparity?

i believe that such a relationship would also be advantageous to the elder vampire, as it would be an opportunity to learn about the current culture. ive found that in my experience i enjoy dating both older and younger women. this allows me to learn from experience as well as to learn about new music and trends that i couldnt otherwise.

The elder vampires "dallying" with the kinder would be a subconscious effect really, to know what it is like through that kinders eyes once again...To share the vitality from the perspective of youthful presence.

The elder vampire would appreciate what it was like to be young once again when it comes to the "purity." As well as to remember what it was like back in their day. To remenis physically instead of thinking about the past, actually have a kinder to provoke you into reliving it emotionally as well as physically.

The two, the elder and the kinder each have their qualities. Though it certainly depends on the long experiance the elder has had for those certain qualities to be applied. The kinder would look at the qualities of the elder and might adapt to them, or shrug them off and take to their own. To learn and either adapt or ignore. Which ever was either more important to the kinder or more conveniant...Depending on the attitude and upbringing really.

Certain attributes are transferred immediately to the vampire upon awakening, more than just the desire for blood. Fictionally, the vamplings senses are more sharp and its strength is magnified. How it incorporates these advantages for survival will vary.

If these same talents or skills increase as they age, does that make the older vampire's blud more desirable? If x sires me and he's a thousand years old, and y sires you and she's only twenty in human years, who has the advantage, if there is one?

Or, is it less the blud being like aged wine, and more about what the older vampire has learned and is able to convey through discussion, by example?

I do not think the palet of the vampire is a hereditary trait...Meaning, I do not think the blood would become sweeter over time when evolution takes its course.

On the other hand, the merit of discussion would mature over time since like all wise individuals have staked claim to would be the advancement in knowledge. I would rather an aged individual then an adolescent any day of the week when taking on suitable conversation.

I think Authors do that to make the story more interesting and it also depends what type of fans the author wants to attract.

Also to relate it a bit with real life relationships, when the older teaches the younger and the younger matures and at the same time keeps the reader/audience more interested because they might see themselves in the situation (example they are having a similar relationship but by relationship I don't mean always love, it can be someone older than you simply teaching you things or the other way round) and at the same time keeping the audience more curious and interested in the story.

i have to agree with einstein here tho....age (like incest) is relative! lol
seriously tho, ive met people far younger than i whose company i enjoy immensely due to their love of life AND wisdom/humor, etc.
on the other hand, ive met young people that were trying so hard to be "mature" that i think they farted dust.
i try to take person as an individual and try not to judge too much by age. that said, i think that an immortal might do the same. after all, why not?
