On July 4, the Deep Impact mission will smash a probe into Tempel-1, a potato-shaped comet discovered in 1867 and believed to be representative of most comets. The impact will carve out a stadium-sized crater and provide valuable information about a comet's interior
Most comets are believed to come from the Oort cloud, a swarm of small, rocky and icy bodies at the outermost fringes of the solar system -- just barely within grasp of the Sun’s gravity. Astronomers believe that the tug of neighboring stars occasionally loosens one of these objects from its icy post and sends it careening either inward, through our solar system, or outward, into interstellar space, where they will drift forever unless lassoed by another star’s gravity

Interesting. ^_^ I love hearing about space stuff as well.
Ohhh, that is so freakin cool. Space is a hobby of mine... Thanks Necroroses...

thx necroroses...I was actually trying to find info on this story...read about it in popular science a few months back...
Good information, was clueless about this, thanks. ~Lady~
interesting, I'll have to check this out form time to time.
ill try and keep this updated i get space.com every week i am a space buff and if any one else is go to nasa's web site heres the link
http://www.nasa.gov/home/index.html
I'm actually quite interested to see what will be found. I don't expect anything too, terribly thrilling, but it will be interesting to see what the science people extrapolate from any data they do get.
well sure because the common theroy of a commet is ice and space dust but no one actually knows because its never been studied nows the chance i cant wait to see what happens
love the spacey thing girl.....lol....
the info was great....
Maybe they'll find some extra-terrestrial microbes.....that's always nice
The announcement was made at a press briefing at NASA headquarters in Washington, during which the Deep Impact team discussed the special fireworks show the mission will is expected to produce on July 4th.
The spacecraft was launched in early January aboard a Delta II rocket, and is scheduled to rendezvous with Comet Tempel 1 early next month. Twenty-four hours before contact, the spacecraft’s two main parts—Flyby and Impactor—will separate and take part in a very carefully orchestrated hit-and-run.
However in March it was discovered that the Flyby spacecraft's High Resolution Instrument (HRI) was not focusing properly. The team will use a process, called deconvolution, to remedy the situation. Deconvolution is widely used in image processing and involves the reversal of the distortion created by the faulty lens of a camera or other optical devices, like a telescope or microscope.
"The process is a purely mathematical manipulation that works extremely well,” said Don Yoemans, a co-investigator for the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). JPL is managing the mission for NASA.
Discovery
Comet 9P/Tempel 1 was discovered on April 3, 1867 by Ernst Wilhelm Leberecht Tempel of Marseilles France while visually searching for comets. The comet was then 9th magnitude and described by Tempel as having an apparent diameter of 4 to 5 arcmin across. Later calculations revealed that the comet had been situated 0.71 AU from the Earth and 1.64 AU from the sun at that time.

That's very interesting.
Technology and it's wonders......
ok now this is a topic that sounds good to me but after i had a theory about a (what could have been a planet and if there was life on it) i was shot down about how this is a vampire theme based site yet i had to think of something cuz most of the stuff i wanted to talk about was in a RIP mode so i thought of something of the space like junk that all i wanted was a little insight on what ppl and vampyres alike thought about that topic i had chosen.
so anyways yeah this shit is kewl (cool) to me, ive always wondered about the stars and other life on other planets and what goes on up in our heavens.
I'm sorrie if has real no relavance to the topic but i had to get that out...sorrie >:D
dont be sorry its ok i had to post something other then rip besides sure its a vampire site but true vampires are human and have intrests not rip and death but real life and i am sure we have all wonderd whats out there in space i have so i just made it a hobbie of mine to look at the sky and chart stars and planets i have a small teleschope thats for amature star gazing i watch meter showers with but i put aside my daly life and gaze at the wonder....
on metershowers....i do too....... i always stop and watch is the fun of it all... ^_^
hmmmm well I was rather nonplussed with the closing of the other thread as I felt if people would have done their homework it could have been an interesting debate........
on the other hand...please keep this one going
as you wish my freind i shall i very much enjoy this subject of space and time continuim i was joking on the quote
