I have heard several stories about the Jersey Devil and seen documentaries and such and how so many people have had their very own encounters with this creature.
Please, give detail blow by blow of all reported sightings and the legend.
Once while driving through Jersey I saw an almost shapeless blacker then the black road that I was travelling I almost thought I was face to face with a bear but there was no shape and the eyes were a horrible red. It scared me down the hair on the back of my neck started to stand on end. I don’t know what I saw ... I am reluctant to say it was the 13th cursed child of Mother Leeds, I would like to hear your personal exp or more info then Wikipedia has to offer. So I beg you to share.
I've never personally seen it, so have nothing to recount myself.
However, having just read an account of the sightings...rather interesting. Have you ever read John Keel's "The Mothman Prophecies"? Hollywood made a movie about it, but typical of Hollywood, it doesnt do the book ANY justice whatsoever.
If you havent, you might be interested in doing so.
thanks for the referance of books i will have to check them out.
i read that mother leeds was pregnaut with her 13th child and she her self cursed it by saying if it was unhealthy she wished it to be a devil shortly after it was born with cloven hoofs and wings and flew out the chimney i swear i linked the wikipedia link to the jersy devil but i guess i messed it up. i wanted to give as much detail as possable ... i just know that my exp. i had only left me with more questions
Yeah, the link was bad, but that's okay, I looked it up.
Definately interesting, that's for sure. I dont really want to give too much away from what you've mentioned you've seen, particularly if you havent read that particular book yet.
One question though. Any physical reactions afterward?
just that my hair stood on end and i felt very ill to my stomache for a couple days after everytime i thought about it ... scared me at the time but iam over it but the questions linger
There have been so may sightings of the jersey Devil, some say it looks like a deformed bear cub and others say it looks like a rabid over-sized raccoon. In the 90's A sheriff's department shot and killed what they thought to be the Jersey Devil. Not too long after, sighting began again -- here and there, and nothing like the stories that used to be told.
This is about sums it up for me.. :)
The Jersey Devil, sometimes called the Leeds Devil, is a legendary creature or cryptid said to inhabit the Pine Barrens in southern New Jersey.
The creature is often described as a flying biped with hooves, but there are many variations.
The Jersey Devil has worked its way into the pop culture of the area, even lending its name to a National Hockey League team.
Now that is legend :)
Two fraternities compete to present the best Jersey Devil sighting.
There is another fraternity that annually presents a phantom horse, and rider.
till recently the giant occtopuss was mostly a myth till they started washing up on the beaches and we know them to be fact .... i want to know why the yeti , the jersy devil, loch ness monster and space men all seem so damn ellusive come out and play show your selfs i think most of us would except you with open arms but then there are the A-holes who would want to hunt them down and dicect them.
Such things are invented by adopting campfire stories, the common reason is promotion of tourist attractions, a practice that eventually back fires on those who propagate the sightings. The original story is always highjacked, and not uncommonly the former " witnesses", and new witnesses versions clash, the media steps in and the whole thing blows up.
Personally I like towns that have verified sightings of rare, or thought extinct animals, it shows how nature has real treasured species, the sensationalism of Cryptid should remain lore, as it is. Yet eventually as I stated above someone will witness an elaborate hoax, and fan the flames.
There will always be some self titled expert to trumpet anything that comes their way, just ask the guy that paid 50, 000 for a frozen furry costume, sold as Big Foot, then think how all the people feel that paid the guys who claimed to find it 300 + to go on guided Big Foot camping trips.
I have Jersey Devil Scat if your interested, a bargin at 5.00 dollars.

why must you pick apart everything i say ?
surely your not naive enough not to realize the two types of people in the world the ones who want to learn and communicate with the unknown and then the ones who will autopsy and pick things apart or just kill because they are afraid and learn from it after it is dead.
surely you took biology in school where you teacher made you cut open a frog well um hello we have
x-rays and detailed books there is no need to be so barbaric
I do think that a disection is actually a useful passtime in a biology class, simply because no photo or art can really make you see inside the animal.
but for what its worth, the frog is already dead, so its not like its a vivisection.
as for rare animals, i think that were the lochness monster proven to exist, and was captured, anyone that wanted to disect such a beast would be hanged, drawn, and quartered (and rightly so).
yes lorwolf you have a valid point i just have a very strong belief that most people would fall into that catagory because they fear what they dont know and they have a need to know how it works from the inside out. i have never been able to express my self in words what i know in my head and it really bothers me cause i want to say things and they never come out right.
but back to the question has anyone on here had thier own jersy devil exp. and how did it make you feel.
well yeti is only cornered to Himalayas only and its phenomenan. I did not experience this experiene yet. but its interesting. Before experiencing it or firm knowledge of it, its wrong for me to deny or accept the phenomenan.
But its possible in Ghost phenomenan. Ghost or Gins are able to do such act.

by no means would i want anyone just to agree with me for the sake of just doing so.
i have strange beliefs and things that have happened i have no proof of. i can understand fully a person being skeptical ...but i feel almost a sort of battle between us ... not necessarily a bad thing. i will admit i am a little intimidated by you ... though i will stand my ground on my feelings and beliefs if someone can prove that what i see or feel is something other then what i think it is then i am willing to except that change.
in the case of JD all i saw was fire like glowing eyes no figure to attach them to as it seemed to meld with the darkness of the night... i am not easy frightened and my hair stood on end and i got physically sick to my stomach ...how would you describe that?
sounds reasonable enough and yes i had heard of the legends and such before i made my journey thru that area and it was roughly about 1 am ... truely dont like the idea that i could be influeanced by the power of suggestion but not saying that it is out of the realm of possables ....and iam really curious if anyone else has had simular type events happen to them i know of at least 2 people on this sight from jersy and no one has spoke up are we ashamed of what might be ??? giggles with a poke at your ribs we are all adults here and should be able to talk about anything
Did you experience nausea as you saw what appeared to be glowing eyes? What other Traffic was around you, in your lane or the on coming? In my youth I have done a few roadside apparitions, you would be surprised how vague an image is needed to make a convincing apparition. I am not stirictly assigning this to your siting, I am presenting another degree of possibility.
very dark unlit road low traffic rate no other cars at the time were around at all after the thing moved off ...dissapeared or what ever it did and i started driving again is when i felt the nausea hit i was at a complete stop in the road i would say the thing was about a good 10 feet in front of me i tried to rational that it was a bear i knew it was not a deer i had seen a few back a few miles but it was so dark i had to drive very slow the road very rutted and then it came out of the woods fast stayed in front of the car what felt like forever then it was gone ...even trying to remember and explain the details sometimes will make me feel ill like it marked me ....i know that sounds silly iam just not ready to say "yo i had a close incounter with JD"

"As for the "A-holes" who want to hunt them down... Who are these people you speak of? No one hunts down a rare animal and kills it for study. At the very least, they would try to study it in its environment, learn about its habits, and try to understand its place on the evolutionary tree, as it doesn't fit anything we know about biology to date. Your statement (presumably about scientists) was rather ignorant and hateful... "
Depends on the monster report...if you read accounts of monster manias in say the 50s or 60s, entire towns did go out posse style to try and hunt them down, so the assumption is not so off base. In fact, people were pretty nervous about 9 or 10 years ago down in Miami Florida when there was a rash of chupacabra sightings.
December, I was more addressing the misconception that scientists (what I assume she meant by "those a-holes") would hunt down and dissect an animal upon discovery. I figured it was scientists she meant, as the people that try to hunt down and kill mysterious creatures do so out of fear, and to the best of my knowledge, dissecting it is never on the agenda.
I do agree though, that it could have been power of suggestion or just being tired. Animal eyes caught in headlights can shine red.
Then again...years ago, I spun my car trying to avoid what was distinctly a coyote to my mind, on the side of a road. Problem was, wasn't supposed to be any coyotes in the area where I live. I'd gotten a pretty good look at it for 3 or 4 seconds, in the late evening, but when I went back, (I thought it was injured) it was gone. So then I thought maybe I'd just imagined seeing it.
A few years later though, and I've seen coyotes around here a number of times. Seems they moved down through some nature preserves from elsewhere. Did I really see a coyote that day or not? No idea.
Well I've experienced similar hallucinations while driving. Mind you, it was after almost 36 hours of no sleep, but while driving down an unlit highway with no cars around, I saw a light from a building ahead, and the light somehow gave the image of a shadowed person walking across the road. I almost swerved to avoid it before the image went away. Scary shit.
well here is a big oopsy my link to this subject was broken as i re read thru the post so it is no wonder the focus has been mostly my exp with the subject and not what mother leeds did or did not do.... suposedly she cursed this 13th child saying she did not want it and if it was not healthy make it a devil ...do you think the leeds baby was deformed (there are cases of people being born with tail just an extra vertabrae) do you think its possable at all
It's entirely possible for people to have deformed children, and indeed it does happen all the time. Mutations in the genome, including (as you mentioned) growing a tail, extra or fewer limbs, etc. There is a lot of junk DNA in our genome that is dormant due to our evolutionary development, but each one has the potential to become active for whatever reason. Oftentimes this can be detrimental, but it can also be neutral or beneficial, too. That's how evolution works, after all.
However, the Mother Leeds tale has several different versions, This one in particular is entirely different from the one you posted. The variety of different versions of the same event leads one to believe that the event didn't happen at all.

~nods~ I'm pretty sure I was wide awake and not even tired at the time, it was a local drive and not very far. Yet I still would not rule out the possibility of hallucination, even if Im not sure what would have caused it. Like I said, I got a really good look at it despite only maybe 3 or 4 total seconds, enough to think it was injured, but I looked everywhere after I stopped the car to look for it, and nothing.
And I hate those....I had someone actually do that to me one night at a well traveled intersection, at night, after a good long rain. Damn good tires on that car, or there would have been one less pedestrian on the streets that night.
thank you for that link as it does point out another story and that is what i was after differant tales and or exp,s ...yes with as many tales that are out there, you would be hard pressed to find any of the story factually based ...other then its location which does not seem to change. i most definately have to agree with you on this one and chalk up any exp simplely being tired / power of suggestion
LivNdedGirl....
I think it's entirely possible that people believe they are seeing something and attributing it to the Jersey Devil myth, but the story of Mother Leeds itself strikes me as suspicious. If someone were to say today, "I had a 13th baby and didnt want it, cursed it to turn into a devil, and it flew out a window." we would be checking for dead babies in the dumpster and the woman would be in jail or the proverbial padded cell.
Even back then, accounting for the superstitions of the times, what do you think might have happened to Mother Leeds if she claimed to have cursed a baby and turned it into a devil, to plague the neighbors?
as the last link i read said it was suspect that mother leeds was in league with the devil practicen witch craft haven his child if i read it right um iam surprised the woman was not drawn and quartered or burned at the stake sence rumor alone would spawn such treatment of a person back in them days and today woo can we say one flew over the coo coos nest.
it is amazen how fast an injured animal can scurry away ...sadly i hit a cat and i know i crushed its whole hind end i jumped from my car to chase after it to get it the help it would need to survive if it was even possable and the poor thing was gone over a small hill and into the brush out of sight
the mind is a strange tool sometimes lucid and most times not (in my case LOL)
La Muerte...
I didn't hit it lol. If I had, I'd know it wasn't a hallucination. But I have long wondered if it could have been, simply because of where it was, and the fact there was no place to scurry off to. It was in the vicinity of a bridge with a cement embankment that was fenced off. When I passed it, it was backed up against the bridge. No blood, and no place to go? I'm pretty sure I had to have just been seeing things lol.
