We all know it will happen. But what we don't know is who is going to be the villain.

Will Nolan decide to do the Joker again? Will he explore other options?

Who do you want to see as a villain? Who could play that villain? And why do you think so?

For me I would love to see the Riddler being played by David Tennent. He seems to be perfect for the role and I think the Riddler would follow the story line that has been laid out as well.

I think it'd be awesome if this time there'd be more than one villian (it happened in other Batman movies) and I'd like to see that again.

Would be so awesome if Jack Nicholson would play the joker again. That man was ace!

Jack is in his 70's 1. he is too old 2. His Joker was comical and no one can replace Heath.
IF they chose The Riddler for the enxt movie he couldn't be silly like Jim was...much like Heath's version of The Joker,he would have to be darker.The new Batman series is from The Dark Knight gravel novels..not the lighter side of Batman.Joel Shumacher made a joke out of Batman with his nipples on the suits and the bright colors and cheesy one liners.The look of Harvey/Two Face in The Dark Knight is how he looked in the Graphic Novels...unlike the crappy makeup in Batman Forever.That is why there is no mention of The Penguin...they want Batman to feel like he could be in the real world with how the villains look.Im sure whoever the villain is in the next one will be just as good as the first two.

im almost afraid of the next movie...the first two were outstanding....im afraid the next will disapoint.
the last time that batman appeared in movies, the first two were very well done...dark, had comic elements, but not silly.
the next two were comic crap. batman should be dark...scary, but a force for good.
i think the first two movies in this series tap in to that very well.

i too would like to see the riddler, but i think jim carrey would be good for the role. he does dark humor really well. remember cable guy?

The riddler needs to be darker than jim carrey and how he played it I would love to see a more of a character actor to it instead someone like johnny depp would be prefect it compared to jim carrey

Personally i will break it down to my opinion on this.


1 jim carrey did what he could with the script given granted he has gotten the ability to do darker movies the number 23 for example, However I would not want to see him reprise a role when the previous incarntion of him was royally sucky for the most part.

Instead lets look at options cause I would love Riddler as the next villain(major fan of his)

lets look at david tennant( doctor who from when the doc first showed back up) hes got the dry flaky look of the riddler can have the mentality to portray, hes done a rather good villain in a harry potter movie( goblet of fire i believe played someones son i believe the dude who pretended to be moody(is not a potter fan)
However he could portray it well. I am a fan of depp however as depp said himself.There are just some roles he would not want seen to be in due to the fact that he wouldnt want to try to fill the shoes of that character.
I forsee a revamped penguin to emerge, to fix the mid 90s folly of him in batman returns.There are a few possible people nolan is looking at pending on which villain or villainess he chooses to use.

I see him going all the way in the third one as to do a type of finale since movies can be great sequels usually bomb and trilogies well only 2 trilogies are worth talking about.

Come one people this is a new series a new take on Batman.As I stated before it is about the darker side side of The Dark Knight.These films have nothing to do with the other series...so why mention actors from the Tin Burton/Joel Schumacher tragedies.Its bad enough Burton made Harvey Dent black ala Billy Dee Williams...but Schumacher made a joke out of Batman,making TwoFace the killer of Dick Grayson's family and Batgirl ,Alfred's niece.As I stated before,The new series is from The Dark Knight Graphic Novel...so each character is DARKER and not funny or chipper.The Riddler is just as dark and menacing as The Joker,he is goofy and silly nor is he a jokester like in Batman Forever.Someone with Kelsy Grammer's voice.Christian Slater has the voice and presence to play The Riddler.

Pardon the mass mis-spelled words...I type too fast and forgot to check my spelling before hitting send.Anyhow I would also like to state they tried a TV show back in the late 90's based on The Batman universe called Birds of Prey,it didn't last a full season.Honestly when they mentioned Ledger as The Joker I laughed and said yeah right...but after seeing the film he was amazing in the role and the Oscar was well deserved.Maybe they need to choose a lesser known character that Batman fought and a lesser known actor for the role.Maybe Deadshot...someone Batman can actually have fight scenes with...Or the Mad Hatter...someone just as crazy as The Joker.

I don't think it's a horrible idea to cast someone of a different ethnicity to a role than was in the comic. Harvey Dent being black is no big shakes to me... neither was it a big deal in Daredevil when kingpin was portrayed by Michael Clarke Duncan.

Another movie would be the third, not a sequel- and yes... this series is darker- and what you found in the 80s and early 90s with Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, and George Clooney is not the route this band of film makers is taking. They aren't going for cheese & slapstick, they are going for seriousness and wit.

I loved Michael Keaton as Batman... but as that Batman. This is a different Batman. Whatever they do next, I am not so quick to turn my nose at. They knew Heath Ledger would rock while the rest of the world scoffed at the thought- it wouldn't surprise me at all to be knocked off my feet once again. If film makers have a couple of great ideas with a specific project, it's not so unthinkable they might have more.

I NEVER said it was a horrible idea.I just don't like it when they change a character so much from the comic to film.Its bad enough they chose a short man to play a TALL character...Hugh Jackman is a great Wolverine but he is 6'2" and Logan is 5'2".I understand they can only do so much in live action compared to comic books...but TRY to stick to the original ideas of the creators.Michael Clark Duncan did a great job as Kingpin but he was chosen because no white actor was big as him.As for the skinny little Topher Grace as Eddie Brock,that was a joke.Brock was a muscle bound pinhead...not a skinny,whiny jerk.Changing the origins of how they became the hero they are is even worse.

I don't think it's 'bad'. It keeps options open for all actors if the film makers are willing to give them a shot. Because in the end, what is the real beef with a black person playing the role? It is- because they aren't white and the character was white. That's no issue for me. We're all people, Billy Dee can portray Harvey... and it doesn't shock my system. He's just a man after all.

Again I have no problem with a black person as you say playing the part...if the character was black...but Harvey Dent is WHITE in the comic.

I know what you are saying about why you don't like the idea of black playing white. I get it. I don't have 'issues'. I am not angry with what you said. I am saying that's your opinion, and I don't have the same view you do. I have my own ideas and they don't always fall in line with the guy standing next to me. Thankfully. I like living in a world of spice.

No reason to get all offended and abandon the forum in general. It's totally not a big deal.

One thing I would like to see avoided in the next installment is the use of too many villains.

When there are multiple villains there just isn't enough time for proper character development in my opinion. You bounce from cut scene to cut scene while multiple villains are get their origins and motives spelled out for the unfamiliar.

I think it tends to make the whole thing feel hurried and watered down.

Just my two cents.

Now that's something I agree with. I loved The Dark Knight... but I didn't get enough 'Dark Knight'. The movie surrounded the villian.

Too many villians would infact ruin the sequel, leave it too scare face or the penguin or bring in a new character to help in aid the sequal, Many people will refuse to see it for Ledgers absent. But we shall see.

look at the spiderman movies it was more taking when spidey fought one character, than 3 he fought multiple and took away from the story lines.

I definitely agree with Images on a lot of what she said. I fell in with the group skeptical of Ledger playing Joker, and now I can't see anyone playing the part as well as he did. I have pretty much complete faith in the casting of the next movie in the series.

I could actually see Brad Pitt playing Riddler. He takes a lot of flack in regards to his acting for being a pretty-boy, but he's shown several times that he does demented and comical exceptionally well. 12 Monkeys was a great example, as was Fight Club.

Oh yeah, Brad Pitt can play a serious scum-bucket... think of: Kalifornia

I LOVED the Dark Knight. And more than likely Johnny Depp will be playing the riddler. He just hasn't confirmed yet.

Now the Riddler is a villain I love. Dark & crazy funny just they way Batman should be dark. So whoever plays this role , I hope they keep it dark.

I personally love Heath Ledger as the joker, but since he died as they say the show must go one. Marilyn Manson should play the Joker it would definitely be an interesting twist to the character.

I wouldn't be diggin' on Marilyn Manson as the Joker. I'd like to see a real actor, and Marilyn has his place in the entertainment business... I don't see him doing this.

For the new Villains. I would like too see either the Riddler, Catwoman, or Poison Ivy!

I think Arnold Schwarzenegger would be awesome at playing the Joker in the new batman movie, and Pamela Anderson can play the Catwoman.

The riddler, penguin had more umfh than the riddler heck poision ivy has more than him.

ok not to cause drama but, Arnold? Come on, only reason he was in batman and robin as Mr. freeze was because he paid them to get the role.

On top if you noticed Nolan isn't using people that were used in the original movies, so the odds of Arnold getting a role again especially since he doesn't act anymore is slim to none.

Anderson, I'd rather see as poison ivy then catwoman.

The next Batman film will probably be well worth seeing. "Batman Begins" with Christian Bale was great, and it didn't have Heath Ledger. No real sense in thinking since Heath isn't around the people the made the first two movies can't have another great film ahead.

Oh cmon RazalRiezen, why so critical, give him a break, Arnold is the best even when his performance is a catastrophe be cause he never fails at being funny, even if his performance is idiotic to a large measure, like the one he pulled out as mister Freeze, I mean, total idiot.

And it really doesnt matter, who would notice, the difference between these two costumes is huge, who would know it is Arnold again, and we would have his talent again to entertain us, his huge jaw blocking every camera angle.

I love Arnold, he is so unique, I think he would be a great choice for the role. Now when I remember Ledger had somewhat more wide jaw too, so there cant be mistake.

Now that I think about it, maybe you are right, PoisonIvy's costume does show more skin, so it would be more logical to show off Pamelas huge talents.

By the way, if they clone another Arnold I bet they can do it, no matter his formal duties, so he can be both famous and loved at the same time!

the story behind mister freeze is not funny in any sense, its all tragic and a lost of emotion.On top of misunderstandings and incoherency of rational thought yet with the brilliant mind that is scary. a better mr freeze candidate would be maybe sean penn then arnold Something arnold hasnt pulled since terminator 1,

as for the pamela thing, i say poison ivy mainly because its pamela how many still imagines her as the babewatc i mean baywatch icon ?

people would be enthralled with her as they would poison ivy of the comics.

And whats so very tragic in the story of mister Freeze, Razael? It is some big guy which could not get to accept that death is a biological fact, and that he should let her go. Once his ideas never worked, he closed him self in to a metal suit because he was insecure with other women, became violent and started to bully the whole city in the most diabolical ways, AND had real fun at the same time. Thats why Arnold would be perfect new Joker. He can really embody these type of ambitious characters, with certain amount of personal greatness, less brain, and which always lose at the end, which helps to really point out the main character.

In truth it would be the best choice if the Joker in the new movie is completely computer generated character, in Ledgers image of course.

Let's not even discuss Awnold anymore! He's done with acting period. He had to sign himself out of the acting biz when he became governor of California. Seriously! The next villian is going to be Phillip Seymor Hoffman as the Penguin. I thing he will make a great penguin. And Catwoman which will be played by Rachel Weis. She co starred in the mummy sequels. Mark my words, pay close attention to those names in the coming months. And if there's going to be a Riddler, he has to be played by none other than Johnny Depp.

Nightwing, I also believe Phillip Seymour Hoffman would be good as Penguin :)

As for Arnold and Pamela- I would lose faith period if they were cast. They just are not up to par at all with where these films are right now... and I question if some people even understand the direction at all, or have even seen the last two movies if Arnold and Pamela are suggestions.

I do agree images, as I said in my opinion if they did cast pam id rather it be as poison ivy (second rate villain in the comics) then a main villainess

Look, I cant see what makes people criticize my choices, is it because these actors are considered old? Or because they do not act good enough for some people? Really, I would be most happy to see these actors play these movies, be cause they are so dumb, and would make me laugh wholeheartedly, not to mention how they all look very pretty no matter what age they are.

For me personally the total loss of faith happened once I saw C.Bale playing the Batman in the last movie. For many people he is great, you know GREAT, but to me he is very unimpressive being short and a babyface, and I would totally decline to see him doing the same thing in the next movie. The most perfect choice for that role in my opinion most definitely would be Dave Clarke be cause he reminds of Michael Keaton, and that was the best Batman, as well Joker.

It's all subjective :) And I think the popularity and money that came in probably shows what the world wants to see.

Ultimately, they are on one of the most successful movie trains in history right now... so they're doing something right ;)

I don't really see Johnny Depp as being involved in this at all, allthough he would be awesome as one of the villans.....I think Crispin Glover would be awesome to play either The Riddler or The Penguin!

No, there will be no Two-Face in the next one. He died! Even Nolan confirmed it. However, the authorities will figure out that he killed those 5 people. Remember, he allowed Maroni and Ramirez to live. And alixaryon are you kidding? Bale played and made a Fantastic and believable Batman! It will be a Dark Knight Trilogy. Also, Catwoman has been confirmed as the next villainess. However, I think that the Penguin should also be in there as well. Because he had a cameo appearance in both sequels, blink and you will miss it. And please no more talk about Awnold, he is out of the acting business period. Even as much as alixaryon wants him there, he is not allowed to act while in a government position.

Two Face will make an appearance. If you remember correctly Harvey Dent died. The actor that plays him was put in a two movie contract. Just look at how Scarecrow showed up in Dark Knight.

I doubt that he will be the main villain. I am putting my money on Riddler. Nolan is doing more realistic villains compared to the Batman movies of the past.

i rather wonder if joker will make another appearance. i know that ledger is gone, but perhaps a look alike for a cameo..as scarecrow did in darkknight.

Does anybody here think poison ivy and that big muscular guy as her bodyguard and MR. Freeze....I see no discussion on these two at all and they were two of his hardest characters whether comical or not.

I wouldn't mind seeing the Riddler or Poison Ivy in the movie. I don't know who I would pick to play them.

I keep seeing this johnny Depp playing the Riddler thing mentioned. Now that I would go see. I was skeptical about Heath Ledger playing the Joker. Mainly because when I was little I saw the old one with jack nicholson as the Joker and to me he was the only Joker. After seeing the dark knight, I really liked him as the joker.

I am actually not a fan of Christian Bale, but I like Batman and there are usually other actors I like in it, so I go see them anyway. If Johnny Depp plays the Riddler I will be there on opening night lol.

Since the first movie was simply awesome I would love to see the joker be the villan again. He was interesting, cunning and very mischievous. If he does I know that he would always have some new tricks up his sleeves.

Personally, I would love to see Selina Kyle as his love interest and not fully transformed into Catwoman just yet. Until like maybe towards the end of the movie. The Penguin, but only as an underground arms dealer, until someone figures out his true intentions. But the main villian should be the Riddler. Im telling you guys, this would make for an awesome Batman flick. And also a young Dick Grayson should also be in there as well. But no Robin until the 4th movie. Then have me play Nightwing in the 6th installment

i would like to see TUT done very dark almost mummy like by jake gyllenhaal... he was only fill in villian in a couple tv shows but i think it would be better then rehashing the same old villians with new peoples

Well if Johnny Depp is gonna be in it and they're gonna make it here in Chicago again...I know one person who will be stalking the movie set, just like I did for Public Enemies....lol

Nolan played TWO FACE, and his character was killed off at the end of the movie, at least that is what they lead us to believe.
Heath Ledger played the Joker, and I do not think anyone else could have done a better job than him. hands down.

I myself would like to see characters such as poison ivy, catwoman, the penguin, and the riddler brought in. granted there are so many other characters that could be used. but, these were some of my favorites from the old school Burton films.

Ok, now that i got my original two cents in, and have fully read the thread.
Personally, I think Johnny Depp would make a decent Riddler. He has the personality to be Dark, but if comedy is needed he is capable, he extremely versatile when it comes to his characters.
And so long as Catwoman is not portrayed as she was when Hallie Berry portrayed her i will be fine.
And speaking of Mr Freeze, I was not fond of this character, and not just because of the last actor (Arnold) portrayed him. And I am sure if they were to bring this character up, they will come up with a better actor than previously mentioned.

I think the Joker will be in the next movie. However, not as a main villain. Much as Cyllian Murphy cameo'd as the Scarecrow. Because Batman saved him towards the end. + he has to go trial for his crimes. And sorry no King Tut. That character was only created for the 60s tv series. And was never included in the comics. Black Mask would also make for a great villian, just as they brought in Ra's Al Ghul in Batman Begins. Which still leads me back to Johnny Depp as the Riddler.

how does that lead depp to riddler he actually has a ton of things already going on so i doubt he will be in the next movie, and besides depp stated somewhere he would rather not be in a batman movie least alone a comic book movie due to something or another

I loved the movie , I think its better to try and keep the same actors or at lease find someone as close to the original actor as possible , I mean were not stupid we can tell the difference in the actors and the acting ability .I really don;t care as long as it has a good plot and is a great movie.love to blow things up!

Since The Dark Knight is headed to become the second biggest grossing film of all time (domestically), rumors have already begun as to what villains will be featured in the enevitable sequel. The latest from the rumor mill has Johnny Depp as The Riddler, Angelina Jolie as The Catwoman, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin. Oh my!

Wouldn’t Johnny Depp make a great Riddler? Yeah, BUT the truth of the matter is that Christopher Nolan has not yet signed on for a third Batman film. His brother and screenwriter Jonathan Nolan is supposedly still on the set doing work for Terminator Salvation. And who knows what David Goyer is up to. Even if he is busy penning a treatment, which is doubtful, I’m confident that casting talks won’t take place for quite some time. Nolan is also the type of guy to cast a role only when he has a script in hand. So I’m sure we won’t hear any casting announcements any time soon. But also take note that none of the actors who have played villains thus far were considered A-listers. And by that I mean, none of them alone could (at least, at the time) open a big blockbuster movie.

As to which villains will be featured in the next Batman film?

Goyer recently told MTV that Chris has decided on a theme for a potential third film. And anyone who has seen either of Nolan’s Batman films know that the theme is inexorably tied to the villain. And while I can easily imagine someone like The Riddler in the Nolanverse, turned into a serial killer who leaves clues behind. I can’t quite imagine a theme based on The Riddler, which would effect Bruce Wayne. And the same could be said for many of the prominent characters in the Batman franchise.

And remember, Goyer and Nolan told us that with 70 years of Batman history, they are more interested in some of the “dozens if not hundreds of other characters” that “had not been in the movies before, and had not been in the sixties TV show before.” My guess is that the villain might not be anyone we expect.

i believe there is going to be something about the joker going to an asylum for demente dindividuals and he is going to persuade Harley Queen as a one of the doctors or something in there.. who knows i think he got to return for a little clip or escaping or something...

Of course you can replace Heath Ledge. Until him, Nicholson had been the mark to meet.. and he met it, easily! As to more than one villain in the new movie:

"Aw C'mon, why?? He's Batman, not Frellin Superman!"

And, much as I have been a fan of The Batman for over forty years, I cannot understand why those m.f.'s who made the later movies thought more than one villain was needed.. like why?

Mr. Freeze? Good. Scarecrow, good.. etc..
But, and here's the but.. they were never used to their full potential, hence needing more than one villain.

everyone is talking about characters they happen to already be familiar with thanks to the bloody-awful other batman movies and cartoons.

nolan will do fine if he does another - few of the people who saw the first one and enjoyed it knew of the villians in it or of batman's backstory... and the movie was a hit.

so heath ledger played the joker well, and wasn't a cartoony caeser romero or jack nicholson rendition. but the movie was good due to writing and plot and a whole cinematic effort... not just because of one guy.

no offense to heath or his sudden legion of fans, but the movie would have been fine if another actor was cast for the reason that NOLAN and BALE are making this franchise work. if they stop now... so be it.

i think they delay production a few years before going a third round. personally i would like to see some offbeat casting instead of all this JOHNNY DEPP ANGELINA JOLIE blah blah top celebrity craziness hype. batman is a great CHARACTER driven story... and there are many characters in the comics that nolan could use that many have never heard of... or actors that aren't heartthrob household icons.

honestly - did anyone initially think poor old ledger would've been so great? no. he STARTED to get good hype/press for the role later on/especially after he died. i'm not taking away from his portrayal of the clown prince of crime... but i assure you this thread would be going on and the second movie woul've been great even if heath ODed after the sequel to brokeback mountain and there was another actor having played the joker... or another bad guy entirely... it's all about the directing & direction.

personally i think MANBAT would make a great character and you could play on that whole identity issue (as in "is batman really who he is" "who is he... what is he?"). Batman having to clear his name while the tragic kirk langstrom wreaks havoc and confuses gotham and audiences alike.

i get a sinking feeling we see the riddler though as he is one of the OLDEST and most diabolic foibles of batman - and this is an origin story being told... but this will not be a silly jim carrey type riddler by any means if that turns out to be the case. TRUST me it will NOT be morgan freeman or johnny depp - christopher nolan will want it done right, not based on hype...
