I’ve been thinking- what is it about the vampire and its mythology that has allowed it to endure over 5000 years of history and span the entire globe.

Why does man have this pre-occupation with vampires, and why does it continue to be so popular in modern culture?

As with many Creatures each generation adapts it, making it stronger relative to present technology advancements, they also reinvent vunerabilities, or eliminate weaknesses all together.

many men and women, have this dark desire to be immortal. to have the power they have fact or fiction. i know that a lot of you out there in the world of the rave and beyond want the power and the sexual prowess the vampire has. it is human nature to have such power to be like well sorry for the lack of a better term. they want to be like a god in there own right. i could be wrong i could be right. what ever. i feel as if that is what most of the world is like today. and even then they wanted such power.

Have to agree with Obsidian on IMMORTALITY being key. Take it a step forward and examine most popular religions which promise LIFE in the Hereafter, or REINCARNATION, both of which are variations on life after death.

Humans want to live and vampire mythology taps into this w/o a lot of hard thinking or the sacrifices required by religion.

every major religion as bloodmother said promises eternal life in the hereafter. but that means one must die to obtain said eternal life. where as the vampire myth gives you that and alot more with out one giving up ones life in return. so yes the vampire myth is infact a very strong idea in most humans minds. they might not admit it to you but they are thinking about it

i dont think that its about a desire for immortality. for most of history, becoming a vampire was a considered a curse....to lose ones soul.
also if you notice the defininitions, "a ghost that rises from the grave and takes the blood, life force, sex, etc from the living"
thats not exactly the kind of immortality most would revel in.
now recently vampires have been made chic, suave, romantic figures. i can see what someone would want to be come this dark, cool, being of great power...but this doesnt explain the world wide myth, or the survival of the myth till modern times.
rather makes me question if its a myth.
rather healthy to question commonly held assumptions, dont you think?

What you say is true, LordWolf, except that while other mythologies have remained static, the vampire mythos has shown much more elasticilty.

As many have noted in other threads, vampires have mutated to suit the times and our fancy. Mostly, they're not soulless hellions, nor are they completely evil.

Human technology impacts heavily on the vampire mythos. We have blood banks and groupies. They don't have to kill to unlive.

Most of us have grown up with superheros bequeathed by some quirk of fate the ability to impact human lives for the better or not.

Vampires have become superheroes.

Blood Mother, well said

Vampiric lore and mythology is an ever changing aspect in our culture, vampires have in fact become super heroes of todays society.

While other night creatures, werewolves have followed on the shirt tales of this movement. sub-cultures and groupies tend to change with the story lines that seem to surface every year.

I don't play with petty "what ifs" life is complete to me. I have an assurance, rather then some vague promise, that I will have a final hallucination when I die. Any concept presented is rather boring, and redunant.. "Ohhh go to the "after life" and it is a perfect life.. blah keep the fantasy.. I want this life full, and unteethered by anticipation.

So many people seem Bi-polar when contimaplating the after life, and spirituality in general, like it is a mental disease, thats it I accept religion as a mental disease.

The last thing I came to this site for was to be proslitized by immplication, I would thank you to save your sermon questions for those who inquire about your "what ifs".

Sermons now, what ifs are thrown around so much here, and in many cases the logic is dampered by dilusions of the life.

mythology and modern culture has been set, and is ever changing as you know.

whether the topic is vampires, after life or therios of science all unexplained and yet a reality in every day mundane life. To question existance of a sub culture or generation movement is un realistic on the bases of faith and belief.

personally i think it is important and relevant to question and exsmine subcultures. its a question of being introspective towards humanity as a whole. if we don't THINK or react or question or GROW whatsoever on a personal intellectual/philospohical level we become stagnant little sheep.

i do find it ironic in this year of 2009 that so many "subcultures", per say, have a massive conduit to MAINSTREAM CORPORATE POP CULTURE.

more and more than ever, that which many seem to profess is "so" different or alternative just so ironically happens to be also a PRODUCT that makes some hulking corporation more and more rich. all the while some folks draw concepts from these PRODUCTS and assume lables as their very identity/label. there's a connection. do the math.

SERIOUSLY
are you telling me this mainstream "emo" thing is spontaneous... like the native americans of the plains ghost dances? or maybe... maybe that it just might have something to do with hyped identity and marketability? people like what they are given... bread and circuses kept the hordes of ancient rome happy.

and as far as vampires go... are you telling me that all the REAL vampires on VR just "have been that way since birth"? (oh wait, some were "turned") I get this weird feeling that most of the REAL vamps (i.e. self professing) here somehow have been exposed to the ideas of vamp/goth culture through say - MOVIES, BOOKS, MUSIC, and LIKE MINDED people (who also are fascinated with vamps...)

IRONIC... isn't it?

actually - not really. the thread itself is titled with the word MYTHOLOGY.

Beast 777= true people do actually come here to learn more and to mingle with others that have the same traits or beliefs. Grouping of society has gone on since before the 50's.

Todays sub-culture per say is defined by many that fall into this, emo, vampiric, goth, punk rock, scientist of ttomorrow. An every changing society means an every changing culture.

Fictional vampires remain within the silver screens, many here do not profess to be this kind of vampire. logical defenition of vampire is what?
fictinal undead person who drains energy from another living organsim.

Meets a lot of standards within our culture, feeding off of others that is.

logical base or not it is a movement and is ever growing. and has consisted since before us two were born. yet with the skeptism or not. it has held its ground and changed with times. traits of books and movies seem to add to the hipe of its growing population.

I have observed that those who profess to be vampires are inconvienced by
movies, and the popularity of myths. They openly denounce roleplayers ( who simply imagine in a theatrical manner, and creatively interact through those characters). Can you not let people be creative? Must every thread be scrutinized, and accountable to your basterdized unpresent, unsunmaruzed adaptation of a well established mythological icon?

I an sick of the saying " Vampires, but not lime the mythological, hollywood vampire." cliché. Like everyone but you is "wise" to some definition.

Do please allow a thread to expand as a discussion if a mythological icon.
You can start a thread about how artifacts, and discovered documents support the existence of people who believe they where vampires..

Despite what anyone may have said about this previously, I'm just going to post what I think.
Men have always been at the same time, afraid and fascinated with things they will never completely understand. Death and subjects surrounding death is always going to be one of them.
There is no way to prove without a doubt exactly what happens to a person after they die, excepting the decomposition process. So things like, ghosts, zombies, vampires are natural myths and beliefs that are going to crop up. I'm not saying that they don't exsist. Just saying that it's mans natural attraction for unknown that attracts them to certain things. They do or don't want to die so they believe and want to be such things. Immortality would be an attraction, or the supposed invincibility. Everyone has their own reasons, whether it's avoiding death or causing it.

"Many criminal cases have been reported involving cases of vampirism. A few well-documented cases include the following. In 1996, a group of five teenagers from Kentucky were charged with first-degree murder in Florida, for killing the parents of one of the members. The five belonged to a cult thought to have 35 members in Kentucky. One year prior to the murder this group began playing a popular game called "Vampire, the Masquerade." This clan called themselves the "Victorian Age Masquerade Performance Society" or VAMPS. The leader engaged the group and others, in drugs, group sex and violence, which was masked by what was thought to be a theater group."

"Some will say that there are two main different methods of feeding on life-force energy; sanguine and psi; and that all other forms of feeding are subcategories or specializations of psi feeding. Others will say that each feeding method is a different form of feeding, hence different "types" of vampires.

Sanguine vampires (or sanguinarians) are vampires who feed by drinking blood. However, it is not the blood itself that they are feeding on. It is the life-force energy contained within the blood. Blood drinking is arguably the most potent form of feeding on life-force energy, and many sanguinarians can thrive for many weeks from a single feeding. (A single feeding is often about an ounce or two of blood taken from a willing donor.) Sanguinarians often describe blood drinking as a very fulfilling, very powerful and somewhat intoxicating experience. It also tends to be a rather intimate form of feeding.

Psi (or psy) vampires are vampires that feed psychically on life force energies. Psi feeding (in any form) can be done from an individual (most often a willing donor) or from the ambient energies of a group or crowd. However, psi feeding can also be done from a person without the person realizing that they are being fed from, although many may consider it to be unethical to do so. Generally though, the person being fed from is not harmed by the feeding in any way. It should be noted that there is no difference between a psi vampire and a psy vampire, other than the spelling. As for the difference in spellings, the only conclusion I have been able to reach is that psi is an abbreviation of psionic, while psy is an abbreviation of psychic. However both terms, psionic and psychic, refer to psychic phenomena. Psi vampires used to be referred to as psychic vampires, but the field of behavioral psychology has co-opted the term psychic vampire to describe a person who has a psychological need for attention and will do whatever they can to get that attention from anyone and everyone, leaving those that interact with them feeling drained. Psi vampires avoid using the term psychic vampire to differentiate themselves from the behavioral psychology psychic vampires. Some will also refer to psi vampires as pranic vampires, derived from the term prana, a Sanskrit term literally translated as life-force energy.

Empathic vampires are vampires who feed on emotional life-force energies from the emotions of people. There are those that will say that vampires that feed on negative emotional energies (anger, fear, etc.) are negative/chaotic vampires and are a subcategory/specialization of empathic vampires. Others will say that negative/chaos vampires are separate from empathic vampires. The reason is that empathic vampires will usually feed on whatever emotions a person is feeling without necessarily causing those emotions. However, often negative/chaos vampires will cause situations where negative emotions and chaotic energies will be stimulated and then feed off of those energies.

Sexual vampires are vampires who feed on the life-force energies generated from having sex, especially the excess energies generated at the moment of orgasm. They can do so psychically and/or from bodily fluids. Female sexual vampires are sometimes referred to as succubi (singularly, succubus), and male sexual vampires are sometime referred to as incubi (singularly, incubus). Some will also refer to sexual vampires as tantric vampires. Others will refer to sexual vampires as pranic vampires. There is sometimes debate within the vampire community if referring to sexual vampires as pranic vampires is correct or not as there are some within the vampire community that refer to psi vampires as pranic vampires, which could lead to some confusion when talking about pranic vampires. Those that support referring to sexual vampires as pranic vampires argue that pranic energies and prana are two different things, and that pranic energies are energies related to sex while prana is just life-force energies. There are those that think the use of the labels tantric and pranic in reference to sexual vampires is an attempt by some within the vampire community at political correctness who feel that the term sexual vampire is derogatory and/or offensive or simply think that tantric and pranic "sound" better than sexual. However, it is also possible that those who use tantric or pranic when talking about sexual vampires are doing so to differentiate them from any link to behavioral psychology which seems to also be co-opting the term sexual vampire to describe a person who has a psychological need for attention (much like a psychic vampire) through sex.

Soul vampires are vampires that are able to feed directly off the energy of a person's soul. As a result of soul feeding, soul vampires will sometimes gain some or all of the abilities of the person they are feeding from. Soul vampires will also sometimes receive memories, thoughts and desires of the person that they are feeding from. Soul feeding is a very intimate form of feeding, even more so than sexual and sanguine feeding. Soul vampires are also sometimes referred to as soul devourers.

Elemental vampires are vampires that are able to feed on the life force energies of the elements; earth, wind, fire, and water. Some will say that elemental vampires are elementalists who are able to manipulate elemental energies and then convert those energies into consumable life-force energies. Others will say that elemental vampires feed directly from elemental life-force energies. There are also those that will say that vampires who feed on life-force energies from plants and animals are also elemental vampires. However, there are those that distinguish such vampires as nature vampires. Another method of feeding often considered a subcategory or specialization of elemental feeding is electrical feeding; the indirect feeding on energies in electrical fields and lightning. Others will distinguish such vampires as electrical vampires.

Astral vampires are vampires that are able to travel through the astral plane and feed off of the life-force energies of other entities within the astral plane, and/or they are able to materialize in astral form and feed off the life-force energies of people that are usually asleep.

Dreamscape vampires are essentially astral vampires that are able to enter into a person's dream, and feed from the life-force energies within the dream. They can be invisible observers in the dream, or they can manifest themselves within the dream. Some are able to influence the course of the dream.

Magickal vampires are vampires that are able to feed on and manipulate magickal energies.

Vampires who only use one method of feeding are referred to by the way that they feed (i.e., sanguinarian, elemental vampire, sexual vampire, etc.). Vampires who are able to feed using some but not all psychic methods but are not able to feed sanguine are referred to as adaptive psi vampires. Vampires who are able to feed using all psychic methods but are not able to feed sanguine are referred to as eclectic psi vampires. Sanguine vampires that are also able to feed using some but not all psychic methods are referred to as adaptive vampires. Sanguine vampires who are also able to feed using all psychic methods are referred to as eclectic vampires."

i would have to say that myth about vampires hell all myths in general will change with the course of the human advancement in the world and the way mankind thinks. mankind will always try to explain the unknown with myth or supernatural ideas. also one must admit that most of mankind has this idealistic view on how great to be immortal would be. the whole purpose of modern medicine is just that the search for the answer to eternal life. during the days of the USA founding fathers the normal age of death was about the late 60s or so and that is if you were lucky...... where as the myth of the vampire appeals to the idea in us all of that dark, powerful, immortal, and sexual being. with that alone being said people will change the myth in order to cope with the ideas of said horrors that also come with the myth.

Revenous: "Soul" or "magikal" vampire??...wth is going on.

Thank you, Revenous! I'm so glad to know it's not just me who finds all these made-up variations on the original Eastern European vampire myth (yes... the Slavic vampire is where it all began and where it all ultimately belongs) increasingly more and more asinine.

As I have forwarded here many times and as contained at the sanguinarius.com website, itself... the vampire myth began in Eastern Europe and its environs and only after it became popularized thereafter did everyone start equating ANY mythological creature who might have only a single similar attribute to the Slavic Vampire as also a type of vampire. By this lazy definition... almost ANY monster or buggaboo could be a type of vampire: if it dies and comes back to life... its a type of vampire; if it has fangs and eats flesh or drinks blood, even by extension of eating flesh, its a type of vampire; if it stalks its prey at night, its a type of vampire; if it seduces others, it's a type of vampire... and on and on it goes.

And now we have taken that same illogical and lazy methodology from the proverbial ridiculous to the inexcusable sublime! Now we have included completely made-up "vampire" types including such types as "Astral," "Magickal," "Dreamscape," etc., types, too?! Enough already!

What's next... "Hello Kitty" vampires?!

Well I think it didn`t really!Well not in the same shape!

The description of the ancient times vampires are very different comparing with the ones of today. In fact there was not a single myth in the old days regarding vampires but many myths and they were really different between them.

If we take into consideration the survival of the vampire as a supernatural creature who feeds upon the blood of the living, I think it`s because of the man conviction that life after death is not completely separated by the life itself, and those who are good helps the living and those who are bad take revenge on them and wants their life essence.

A major contribution of the revamping (sic) the myth has the Romantic Movement.Without the romantic movement in Germany and then England and France, continued by the Victorian Literature for sure that the myth would be almost forgotten by now in the western civilisation.

Exactly, Dragonrouge. the "vampire myth" didn't last all this time. What lasted was the word. The myth dies and changes every few years or so every time a new book comes out.

Another interesting question, though: what is it about zombies that have withstood the test of time? People have believed in zombie myths for ages, and zombies aren't real.

Dragons occur in legends all over the world over a span of over a thousand years. Is there something special about dragons?

Bigfoot?

Nessie?

Oklahoma Lake Monster?

The Kraken?

Etc?

La6Muerte66 I like how you put that, the myth changed but not the word,

But if we look back at the original myths of vampires, I tyhink they have not changed, but the lore or fictional vampires in the movies have changed our outlook on what the vampire looks like now and acts compared to the old myths. Just my opininion on that aspect.

I do concur the original lore has been lost the the fiction writers of today.

cadrewolf,

I think both you and LaMuerte are saying the same thing... using different words. Who and what the "vampire" (even this term is a corruption of the original upir') truly was and still is. The word, indeed, as remained the same (at least for the past three centuries), yet the popular image of the vampire has changed with every new fictional portrayal in book and, particularly, film.

And unfortunately, the masses are far too easily influenced and ... frankly ... far too ignorant of the facts to know any better.

I have never ascribed to the Eastern European vampire mythos. It got a following due to the book "Dracula" which is total fiction and was ultimately written a certain way for sales purposes and most of what is thought about it is false. Count Dracula as a character was Hungarian and not Romanian and the connection to people and places is in the minds of those who have either not read the book or know the nitty gritty of it. The use of the word Nosferatu being thought to be a real word is case in point. It is a fallacy that has taken on a life of its own when it was merely an error for a word that someone misheard and was not proficient in Romanian and nabbed by Stoker. All of these things contribute to myth. Vampire is a more noted word for these creatures.

Most of the myths deal with revenants more like zombies that rise from the dead and sustain themselves mindlessly and without remorse either on blood or some other way of obtaining life force; blood being a rare source. It is only in fiction books that one finds humanity in the vampire. The blood drinking ideas come from fiction and not folklore for the most part. There are stories of blood drinking but they are minimal compared to others. Some comes from superstitions that formed from the practices of tribal groups who believed in ritual blood drinking and cannibalism. It was a common practice for the Scythians and other associated tribes; not as a malicious act but associated to traditions of the warrior and family. These practices had spiritual connotations.

Vampires of mythology are not romantic, they are not something to be revered. Many of them are cultural explainations for the death process that was not understood. Vampire is used for want of any other word that can describe those who need something more than the energy obtained from food and other characteristics. Mythology and fiction generally paint a picture of a creature that cannot eat food or procreate because they are actually a dead entity that has reanimated. Whether mythology or modern culture, there will always be nay sayers. Some look to the word being used in regard to a noble but only meaning that the noble was sapping his people dry and victimizing his subjects. It was a metaphor. Time changes views and how people interact and behave. If we were in the middle ages most would probably be in hiding and "letting" those in power usually of a religious bent, spread false rumors as to origins and behaviors of what they believed a vampire to be; mindless, walking creatures that rise from the grave and feed off of man one way or another and could only be killed by certain methods. This would be for the sake of safety. Not only have there been witch hunts but there have been frenzies of hunting what some thought of as werewolves let alone someone thought to be a vampire by whatever word was used for such a creature. It is from superstitious under educated peasants, much of it stemming out of India where the gypsies originated and spread all over Eastern Europe and other places that seem to be selectively unrecognized because the presentation of the mythos is unfamiliar to most.

Immortality seems to be the interest of most pertaining to vampirism or "special powers," but most of what is spoken about concerning this aspect is exactly that, myth. Myths cannot be corrected unless those who are the object of the myth stand up and say hey, this is how it really is and what we mean by this term. Whether someone else believes what is being said isn't relevant, but merely an intrusive opinion.

All that is needed is the ability to regenerate cells. I have read articles on this topic and researchers are close to solving this problem. Would man really want immortality barring accidents, and at what cost? Would it only be for the rich? We would have to branch out into space because there wouldn't be enough room on this one little planet. The romantic idea of the vampire living forever is all right for an idea but in practice would not be beneficial to society in my opinion.

For La6Muerte66:

As UpirLikhyj said, not even the word is so ancient as the myth.
Also it depends of how you define the term vampire.
I am surprised that when a forum thread is started here about this interesting subject, nobody define the term vampire, so everybody gives very different answers.

For Azuredark:

In Stoker`s book Dracula was not Romanian indeed, but not Hungarian either. He was Sekely. This is different from both Hungarian and Romanian.
The novel is a fiction book but like any good novel is written after a period of research, so the character is based loosely on the Vallachian voivod from the XVth century Vlad III Dracula aka Tepes, too.

"The blood drinking ideas come from fiction and not folklore" this too can be debated. In some Romanian tales the vampire drinks the blood of the victims. In some Russian tales too. Also in the Hindu mythology and the Maya culture.

"Vampires of mythology are not romantic, they are not something to be revered. Many of them are cultural explainations for the death process that was not understood."
I`m afraid the vampire from mythology are VERY Romantic. After all the Romantic movement liked it very much and the myth it`s in totally harmony with the Romatic Movement traits.
Unfortunately the Romatism is greatly misunderstood and associated today... just like the vampire myth, I dare to say.

"mindless, walking creatures that rise from the grave and feed off of man one way or another and could only be killed by certain methods" it was not the christian religious point of view. This description of a revenant you give is very accurate and it fits the Central and Eastern vampire figure in times before Christianity.

"Immortality seems to be the interest of most pertaining to vampirism"
It`s very true but it`s strange that the alchemical "elixir of long life" or the fairy-tale of "Youth Without Old Age" is not so popular anymore. They are centered on that, after all.

I totally agree that the image from the Hollywood action vampire movies or the romance vampire books create a distorted image of the myth. The modern man does not have vary much time for him today... so he eats burgers instead of coking.

However I doubt that the science will discover what is so fascinating about vampires that kept them live until today.
You can`t explain the core of the myth. Not of this one and not on any other myth.
The core of a myth is veiled in mystery and it`s possible (just like the vampire myth) to not have only one source.
If you discover the answer you kill the myth.
But I`m sure it will return to life!

There is a tendancy for those who claim to be vampires, or identify as vampires, the lack of summarized definition is furthered by the attempt to denounce all established perseptions regarding vampires. As if the old myth needs to be updated.. to appease idealistic fantasies of escapist, and power trippers.

Yeah - What LordWolf said earlier; the attraction to vampires is like the attraction of some movie or rock stars in a way: They are usually good-looking, strong, have monetary means, a dark dark undercurrent of sexuality (ie 'bad boy/bad girl') and are just cool.

Well stated ISIS, peoples fasination with movies and books brings them out to inquire with the vampire bases of the community.

Role models persay, instead of role models of the past, the models have now become vampires and the dark side of the spectrum( not superman or hereos)

Those who User the Vampire Myth, and insist that people open their minds to some expanded definition need to consider a different name, this will serste them from the constant "Not like those Hollywood, and myth vampires." let's face it not everyone is so " intrigued" by the "Vampire Community" Does it ever cross the minds of those who profess to be vampires that all the hype is self grandizement?

Why is it that any thread, has to cater to .." well as vampires we really must disagree with myth, and lore, that is so not what vampires are."

Well, some say Vampires started out as a plague and some say they were the start of the plague.

But we will always have them in our history because of the fact that people will always talk about vampires in history.

They move all over the world and live every ware and some even live in your own backyard you would not know it.

Some are scared of the light and some are not.

Some feed only on woman and some feed on all.

We all can be Vampires and yet most are not .

Find your place in life and join in the fun i say .

Just watch out for the ones that bite may kill , for they are not as few as some would think.

Vampires are mysterious and everyone loves a good mystery. They're also powerful and don't age. Who doesn't want that.

Also, we have yet to find any evidence that they don't exist so they may not be myth at all so... LOOK OUT BEHIND YOU!

many fables are yet proven, yet do we speculate that they are true. Blood infections and traits may show some degree of proof. Yet Vampire within the hollywood screens are made up.Fact

persona and culture of life has given a new meaning to vampires if that is what they are called and the rise to another era of re-writting the vampiric lores.

That's not what I'm getting at though. The length of time a myth survives has no bearing on its veracity, and especially in the case of vampires as not even the myth has remained the same. Why is a myth special just because people still remember it? Think about it. The original myth survived all these years. So what? Children are still taught about ancient Greek and Roman myths that have survived for thousands of years, but does anyone still believe them? Rome wasn't founded by Romulus and Remus, lightning is not caused by Zeus hurling them from the sky, nor is it caused by Thor and his hammer; people with sleep paralysis are not being attacked by an old hag, and an omniscient Creator cannot experience emotions.

Myths that survive and are still believed by a decent quantity of people are called religions. Does that make them special? The fact that there are more than one of them means that they cannot all be true, so which one is more special than the others?

See my point?

to me it all comes down to the simple fact that the human mind will always lust for the power they see with in the mythical vampire. its comes down to the very ideal that humans seek the darker nature of things in there life and well the vampire of myth holds all the dark and hidden desires of the human physique its for that reason they update the vampire myth its for that reason they remember the myths of the vampire and what not. its the ideal that some humans think of or believe in what have you in order to deal with ones mortality.....
