For those that read the Anita Blake series and those that haven't.... the book is obviously about htis woman named Anita Blake and she has multiple lycanthropy and other things. I was wondering, Does anyone think that it's possible to have multiple lycanthropy or that such a thing exists?

I haven't read the entire series, but the last book I read stated quite clearly that she did NOT have multiple lycanthropy, and that she could not aquire it at all (at one opint she had to shove her "beast" onto someone else in one of the books because she couldn't change even though she had a "beast."

However, depending on how you view lycanthropy, I don't see why a person could not shift into whatever animal they wanted. Unless of course you view lycanthropy as merely a desease and not a spiritual practice.

Yeh true. I still don't know what my view is on it, I think that it's impossible to have multiple strains but then again anything's possible.

Forgive me if I am a bit "Technical" but isn't "Lycanthropy" by it's very definition limited to "Werewolves". The root of the word "Lycanthropy" is from the Greek "Lycan" (λύκος) i.e. Wolf, and "anthohorous" (άνθρωπος) i.e. Human or man. Therefore a "Lycanthrope" is literally a "Wolf-Man".

It is also implied that this is a process over which the individual has little or no control.

The process you speak of would be better referred to as Therianthropy, i.e. "Beast" or "Animal" - man. Typically this is also something that the transformation is not controlled by the individual, but the actual animal form transfigured into is not constant.

If the individual controls the transformation and can take multiple animal forms the description "shape shifter" would be more apropos.

The terms that ~KCRC~ was using in my perspective may only imply to roleplayers and or books in general and should not be taken seriously by any means.

There is no such thing as "Therianthropy." just another roleplay term in itself.

No offense ~RC~.

According to the rules of the world she inhabits she should not have all those beasts within her, everyone tells her it is impossible, yet she does, wolves, leopards, lions, some more, not sure about the swans. If you have not read Laurell K Hamiltion and her heroine Anita Blake, you should, the books are eroting, very well written

While they would remain as "very well written" due to popular opinion, this remains as fiction and as such... Conditions placed within the book should remain as fiction and fantastical and should remain beyond contestation until proven infatically otherwise.

vvSoulshroudevv

No offense taken. I agree the terms refer to mythical and / or fictional beings.

Nevertheless, the OP referred to "Lycanthropy" including multiple animal forms other than wolves.

The term "Lycanthrope", though referencing a fictional being, is still limited to a Man - Wolf being.

The fictional beings in the Anita Blake books are more correctly referred to as "Theirientropes" as multiple animals forms are involved.

The WORDS are real and have specific meanings, the creatures are purely fictional.

I think the character in the Blake novel is called a Chimera...

Chimera was also used in the tabletop game called Immortal, which came out around 1992, where a character might have two or more himisati forms.

Regardless of lycanthropy's etomology, most people consider it teh deseased/lesser version of a werecreature.

The Anita Blake stories also had two other versions of werecreatures.
Those that are only born to it, and those that are cursed (I think the swan king was a witches curse version.)

I love Anita..shes a fireball personality that has no qualms about pulling out a gun and shooting the person that's pissing her off...

Yes the books have a high level of intimacies taking place between the characters along with metaphysics, and a good healthy dose of animal-shifters..

Personally after the last book: Blood Noir
I cant wait to see what happens next..

In a way I want her to choose a shape..and finally shift..
however I want her to embrace the panwere within and be able to completely shift into each animal she holds inside..

I have read all the books and a couple of the comics.

She may have dominion of her beast and be considered a leader; that's it.

She does not have some sort of Lycathropic multple personality disorder.

Anita is Waaaay Cool!

It is my understanding - from the few Anita Blake novels I've read - that she was a human adept in magic, and had mad hunting skills.
She had a lycan and vampire boyfriend, but she was neither.

The books are not a scholastic work, neither are they meant to be true to our reality, they are set in a separate reality, if you are going to talk about that reality you must accept the confines the author has set in that reality, yet within the framework, what Anita does is thought impossible by the other were creatures, yet she does them

I have read the books and find them very entertaining but they are in no way factual beside there are no such things as real Vampires or werewolves.

Vampires are real. You should read some of Carl Jung s work. More especifically on the Colletive Unconscious. There are memories buried deep within us. Myths, legends, stories of vampires or similar creature are found to be in every corner of this planet, places without previous contact with each other had similar myths and beliefs.

The two most told tales around the planet are those of the great flood and of vampires.

I dont think so, my thinking is it is more role playing. But that is only my view. I cannot really say if it is true or not as I have never had any dealings with it personally.

But that doesnt mean it isnt true, just I never had any experience in it. One cannot believe all he see's or hears in books or tv.

Therianthropy is a real word that existed prior to the Otherkin community. There is another word and I can never remember the word for general shapeshifting but historically even though lycanthropy from the position of root meaning would mean changing into a wolf it depends on the country. It is used loosely to also mean shifing into bears and other animals as well. As far as calling anyone a Lycan that wasn't popular until Underworld came out. I wouldn't call it roleplaying so much as semantics really and fad. In the Otherkin community they have what is called aspected characteristics and nosselinfea. Most who claim multiples are usually diagnosed as schizophrenics. It is different from D.I.D. where they really have multiple personalities because the other is believed to be fantasy. It doesn't matter if someone wants to call it roleplaying or not, that is subjective and only applies to personal belief systems. Many think differently. I have no opinion because I am sort of a live and let live person. The same could be said of any form of believed vampyrism as well as including what some think is more acceptable...there is no proof and not even historically because folklore is oral until written down by someone and when things are passed orally they tend to change over time as the superstitions of cultures change. Many times it is an entirely different culture that has done the writing as well and they tend to be either biased or unfamiliar with certain beliefs and it is from their perspective. When it is written it is usually called a myth but that depends on what it is and where it is from. Even some words used now for vampire technically mean wolf's fur. I have a very long article on Lycanthropy in my Azuredark journal. It is probably in special topics. As far as Anita Blake, fictional so it can be anything the author thinks up.

Excerpt:
Therianthropy (from n. therianthrope and adj. therianthropic, part man and part beast, from the Greek theríon, θηρίον, meaning "wild animal" or "beast" (impliedly mammalian), and anthrōpos, άνθρωπος, meaning "human being") refers to the metamorphosis of humans into other animals. Therianthropes have long existed in mythology, appearing in ancient cave drawings such as the Sorcerer at Les Trois Frères.

The term therianthropy was used to refer to animal transformation folklore of Asia and Europe as early as 1901. Sometimes, "zoanthropy" is used instead of "therianthropy".

Therianthropy was also used to describe spiritual belief in animal transformation in 1915 and one source raises the possibility the term may have been used in the 16th century in criminal trials of suspected werewolves.

You can look up original sources here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Therianthropy

More:

It also seems that lycanthropy is not specific to an experience of human-to-wolf transformation; a wide variety of creatures have been reported as part of the shape-shifting experience. A review of the medical literature from early 2004 lists over thirty published cases of lycanthropy, only the minority of which have wolf or dog themes. Canines are certainly not uncommon, although the experience of being transformed into hyenas, cats, horses, birds and tigers has been reported on more than one occasion. Transformation into frogs, and even bees, has been reported in some instances. A 1989 case study described how one individual reported a serial transformation, experiencing a change from human, to dog, to horse, and then finally cat, before returning to the reality of human existence after treatment. There are also reports of people who experienced transformation into an animal only listed as 'unspecified'.
