The following was taken from a book called 'The Vampire Encyclopedia'.
Great post. None of that stuff ever worked on me. Maybe you have to believe it for it to work.
Since vampires only exist in folklore there's no worry.
Mainly just seeing what other ways people know of and etc.
these are quite amusing to read about.... but you have to keep in mind.... during this day in age.... people back then thought electricity was magic and the world was flat.... and you can somehow sail off the edge of the world.
but i put it in that category... they are silly now... but back then... they were considered to be truth... so though it may be amusing now... it was serious then. And yes... I du suppose vampires who can be scared away by garlic is only found in folklore... I will agree to that. But people are so quick to call just about everything a vampire nowadays.
I do consider myself to be vampiryc, and do not think that many of these would work...
But as God of Chaos said, back in the day- who knows? It is definitely a very interesting topic
But vampirechica, the post refers to Vampires, not vampyres.
very interesting...I've heard of some, but not all...as to whether they would work, I doubt most would work
most methods are considered myth, for they thought that all evil in the time must be defeated by good. so many claims of vampire protection was created. so Yet never really proven.
Even in ancient egyptian times, the cross was a symbol to ward off evil. That's before it became a widely used symbol for the crucifixion of Christ.
I'd say the most used form of protection to real psy/psi vamps is called "shielding".
Society likes to be scared, but they like it even better when their monsters have a weakness they can exploit.
assuming that we are discussing the living dead vampire, then my curiosity is about how these things were supposed to have worked.
i understand silver, but i have no idea how garlic was supposed to have worked.
just sayin.
(and as a vamp with a y, i personally love garlic)
~W~
I think i can understand the garlic one a bit. They say that if you eat enough of it, it wards away mosquitos, which are, blood suckers....females anyway. I wonder if maybe they tied that tidbit together with vampires?
Folklore offered many mental comfort in difficult times. The threat appeared real, even though, history has dismissed the Forklore as imaginary.
I believe that garlic, if you ate enough of it, was thought to "taint" the blood, basically changing the flavor of it, so that the bloodsuckers would no longer view you as a snack.
Other than the standard good vs evil (holy water & crosses) I am not sure about the rest.
Mirrors on the door to keep vampires out? LOL. Perhaps they avoid mirrors, but I don't think the minor annoyance of a missing reflection would stop one unless they specifically stayed away from mirrors to lower the risk of being caught a vampire due to the missing reflection.
And, I am interested to know why bells and seeds would allow for vampire protection, if anyone is more familiar with this topic.
I think bells are related to death in some form. You used to find them in graves if a body came back to life (apparently they didn't double check or something) lol , hell's bells.....so maybe a vampire is all about avoiding death so hearing bells is sort of like an alarm to a thief, get away from them? Just my thoughts, but would like to hear more from others about it. :)
some of this stuff might work but wood is supposed to do more damage
I'm surprised that no one pointed out that knives and stakes to the heart are going to stop just about anyone. LOL!
Why would anyone need protection from vampires if you are all on vampire rave?
the mirror would work because mirrors at least back in the day were backed with silver. silver is a holy metal since it is making amends for being the substance that sold out jesus, so vampires...werewolves (which in the day were the same thing) avoided it like the cross

justinV makes a good point, anyone that has somthing threw a major organ, can and will die!
the only thing immortal about a vamp is his spirit.,
engergies, and the ability to keep comming back after
death.not the rising from a grave, like out of the
ground,thats silly.
Most of thoes things listed are not true.
alot of things are made-up or misunderstood.
alot of knowledge gets twisted and turned around
threw long periods of time.Never one story remians
the same when passed down the line.
Of course we must not forget, that there are many
diffrent types or kinds of vamps.
some have diffrent ways of death or fear of somthing,
or maybe a strong hold against somthing.
I would ignore most of those...most versions of what you find there are just parlor tricks for the Hollywood vampires, cross's do nothing for us...just pisses off you trying to bat a cross at us. You have to think my dear boy..we are a sentient ageless race..we have been here for centuries...even back in the dark ages we used disinformation to give you humans hope on how to kill us...we walked among you..we still do in day light...i go to church....sometimes, i love Italian, the methods these....protections were created from...were from old superstitions....however....you stake me through the heart...that would work...you shoot me with a bullet...any bullet...that would work...we feed off blood to replenish our own...there are many types of vampires out there though...it's not necessarily the blood that gives us sustenance it's the life force in the blood...when i cannot feed off blood i feed off of the psychic energy that every human being has...."yes..we exist...yes we walk amongst you....we are immortal in other ways...not the Hollywood versions....but if you run around saying...OMG VAMPIRE....who is going to believe you.... >:) an excellent post...but more for Hollywood vampires..than the real deal.
I think a lot of you are missing the point.
These ARE for folklore vampires....
LMAO!
We should all practice this amazing technique of reading things completely before posting sometimes....
it would spare us some of the off topic and irrelevant posts.
But many of the things used to ward off evil and illness in the 1600-1800s where amusing at best, but it gave people comfort as they where at least trying to prevent something, because then there was no way to stop it, as medicine and technology was still very limited.
Garlic is a folk remedy, and it has antibiotic properties, as well as blood thinning.
Interesting thread. A good and sharp Machete will do the job. You must cut the head and bury it separate from the body. Now, That is cool!!!!
oh, i got that it was for folklore vamps, but i always wonder what was it that caused the people of the time to believe that each remedy is useful?
~W~
Folklore in itself can be very fascinating and is usually based on what was once believed to be fact. Information handed down over the generations and form person to person changing slightly over time. One item I have heard of that can be used against vampires is pure silver. I know silver is for killing werewolves, but it is said vampires are allergic to silver so silver crosses, and stakes come up as a useful weapon to use. I think it is more based on the ideal that silver is a pure substance and vampire have issues with the presence of purity.
To whomever commented on the seeds - the idea was to keep the vampire occupied all night while they counted them.
LMAO
Knives: Stab the vampire in the heart; also useful against the mara.
You can stab any living thing in the heart and it will die. lol
Awsome!!
Isn't it strange how much credence we give to historical urban myths...it is as if the very fact that the legend has been in existence for so long substantiated its validity....
i dont imagine a vampire saying "Oh you've got holly in your house. Alright, those are the rules, i'll stay out here."
there is no protection from something
that is not real and only lives and breaths
in nightmares
hmm.. interesting
any protections methods against psychic vampires?
This thread assumes the existence of vampires for the sake of discussion. It's hypothetical for everyone who does not believe they exist: IF.
I'm sure nobody will confuse your stance on whether or not you expect an invasion if you participate in the discussion. If a vampire did exist, what would you do to stop them?
Just like if a homeless man assaulted you, what would you do to stop him?
Only with one, you get to decide inherent weaknesses
In Transilvanian folklore there is one more way to stop a vampire: the salt.
Although sometimes is used in magic rituals, the salt seems pretty well known for it`s antiseptic proprieties just as garlic (in a certain way).
Besides stopping a vampire attack the human mind has invented all sorts of preventing a vampire to attack:
They were buried in the crossroads because like every knot the vampire soul can be magically bound by magically bound things. A knot of the way should work as well as a net.
The head of the vampire should be cut and placed at his legs because in this way the soul of the strigoi (the term can be translated as witch, devil or vampire) will not find the way back in it`s body(the only way back was considered the mouth because that`s the way the souls go in as a reflection of the divine embodiment of the soul - in Romanian suflu=breath is so close to suflet=soul) when it will be back from it`s nocturnal hunt.
Besides the naive point of view (remember that the origin of these believes are lost in the mist of ancient times) we have to recognize that they are fascinating and have a poetical (they are metaphorically constructed) charm. also their symbolical importance is great and can still fascinate our materialist way of thinking of today.
I remember a funny graffiti on a wall:
"God is dead!"
Nietzsche
"Nietzsche is dead!
God
Ti be back on topic I`d say that the decapitation was a method that the modern books about vampires still use today for finishing the vampire but the method has lost (too bad) the magical explanation present in the folklore.
