I am wondering what does Halloween mean to you?
I mean to myself it's getting dressed up and gettin drunk :) but on a serious note I also heard it is the time when the veil that separates us from the spirits is the thinnest.
Now to me this a source of great comfort. I mean that a few people who I care deeply about are no longer here, to me this means once a year am not that far from them.
So, what does Halloween mean to you?
(hope that makes sense)
P.S. am eager to hear of traditions where your from (or local folk tales) my favourite is a story ''The night the devil came to Liverpool''.
Samhain is the Pagan New Year and also the time when the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead are at its thinnest.
I celebrate by dressing up, cooking (making sure to set a place for any deceased relatives), etc.
Trick or treating is traditional and involves dressing up and going from door to door. But in modern days it has moved away from its roots. Originally one is to dress up as something scary, so the spirits get confused and believe you are one of them. Hence the, "trick" part of trick or treating.
I always dress up as something scary. Why people choose to dress as fairies and light plugs and princesses and other "funny" and "pretty" things has always amused me.
And it is sad that people do not keep with tradition. It is why I also enjoy attending renaissance faires because it gets close to what it used to be like. I admire tradition over modern shit, any day.
Halloween is my most special time of the year, it is the beginning of the major holidays for me. unfortunately I am not really celebrating this year.
i dress up for halloween and have fun but since i am asatru i celebrate a norse holiday called winter nights which is kinda like samhain being the thinning between realms its also a time to celebrate the Disir which is pretty much all of the female ancestors.
Halloween is just a fun time to me...candy and scary movies...
When my daughter was younger it was Halloween Horror nights every year and great family time.
we switch off the lights and pretent we are not in to the damn trick and treaters.
It's just another day, no different from any other day that some people give meaning to.
Another day for drunken debauchery! Well, at least I dress up for this day of fun! *smiles*
For me it is a day that I have my friends and family over. We cook and set a place for our Ancestors. We also have a ritual. Then the ones with younger ones will go out trick or treating. While most of the adults will go out either to parties or our local pub.
When i was younger it ment a Halloween party for my birthday since my birthday is on the 1st of november so my mom would throw me a party for halloween
Never really had a Halloween tradition - tend to do something different every year. Although I do (now that we have our own place) leave a place setting for my stepfather, who passed away in Oct 1998.
As a pagan it's the time when those who have crossed over, have a chance to cross the veil and roam the earth once again. it's a time where we honot those precious dear ones that have passed. It's also the late harvest where we celebrate with things made with seeds and beasn, sich as cornbreads, pumpkin pies, chili, beans, sunflower seeds, and nuts.
Halloween,devils night,all-saints-day,I think it's
just great!
to me,it's the time of year where the WORLD is ours
to live,breathe,and take!Everyplace you look..
everything is at our grasp, and all things are out and
being sold like its all our world once again.
darkness,chaos..in order by darklight, and the bliss
of the demons and beasties..all around for everyone
to enjoy!
time of the year where there is no heavenly crudd
where ordinary mortals worship to.
Pumpkins rise from the ground, free candy givin to you
by being the most evil thing you can be!
to me,its the time of year that we are worshiped by
just being us,creatures of the night that long-time
forgotten and hiddin away from the minds of frightend
humans.
to tell ya the truth,i live..'halloween' 24-7 all year
round.but, when its truly halloween.this is the time
when i feel alive.
to me it's life..even in death.
Another celebration in the wheel of the year, and time to get dressed up and party. I look at it as time to party with all those who have passed on and those who are still here. It gives me a chance to honor my ancestors who made sacrifices so that I might be here, and to have a good time in the process...
As a follower of Wicca, I call it Samhain or All Hallow's Eve. Samhain is the start of the Witches New Year, and it's the time when the veil of this world and the spirit world is at its thinnest. I use the light from the lanterns for guidence and protection. It's the time of the year when the day's become short and the night's become longer, and we need guidence to get us through the long dark months. It's the end of the year, and time to make plans for the future, ready for a new beginning of the year.
It is also a good time to contact loved one's and a good time to connect with the spirit's of the ancestors. The light leads the spirit's from the darkness back to the other side.
To me its just another day. This year though,Ive been asked to dress up,so I will for the second time in my life.
As far as any magick or spirit talking,.that can happen anytime, anywhere,so the fact it is Halloween, makes absoloutely no difference in that respect.
To me.
