I was reading in some old folders that I keep article clippings in and found this one. Being that is now getting closer to Samhain, when the Veil is the thinnest and we have better opportunities to reconnect with those from the past.

This article as titled, "Do the dead greet the dying?", is great for this time of the year.

Alot of people that have experienced NDE (near death experiences) speak of seeing someone or something. Majority of the time it is someone that had already died and it is comforting to the person.

Do the dead greet the dying?

By David Kessler, Oprah.com
STORY HIGHLIGHTS
It's common for the dying to have visions, often of someone who is already dead.

The visions that people experience at the end of life are extremely similar Visions tend to occur hours to weeks before death There's no point in telling a dying relative you think he or she is hallucinating

(OPRAH.com) -- Throughout my years of working with the dying and the bereaved, I have noticed commonly shared experiences that remain beyond our ability to explain and fully understand. The first are visions.

As the dying see less of this world, some people appear to begin looking into the world to come. It's not unusual for the dying to have visions, often of someone who has already passed on. Your loved one may tell you that his deceased father visited him last night, or your loved one might speak to his mom as if she were there in the room at that time.

What is your take on this ? Do you think they are hallucinating or do they actually see them ?

If we REALLY knew for sure.....there would be no point in discussing this. So in saying that....MY opinion it is either their own memories or personal expectations bringing on this behavior.

Bottom line.....

The mind does strange things at that moment, perhaps it is a "response" or a "coming to terms"...by the mind and or body to make death more palatable.

I've had some interesting dreams and visions of dead relatives but thats been for the last 20 or so years. Does it mean I am close to dying? Sure it does. Every second I get closer, as do we all. We begin dying when we are born.

I do not see a correlation between being near death and having visions as healthy people can have the same visions.

Now if ALL people that are close to dying are experiencing visions of dead relatives, then maybe it is those people coming to terms with their own death (as stated above).

I must say i think they are really seeing things and having visions. I have worked in the medical field for 8 years and have witnessed this several times for myself. The things they see are too specific and accurate to not be real. For example, one of my patient told me her mother was there visiting with her and they were going out to lunch at 1:30. She passed at exactly 1:30 that day. I have several stories but i wont get started lol, but i do beliver that we are capale of actually seeing things/spirits/visions whatever u wish to call them, i think it is naive to doubt it, our mind is a very powerful instrument and we rarely use the majority of it. Makes u wonder what all we could be capable of.

Many years ago I had a NDE, which changed the way I view many things in life and death. Honestly I don’t believe I should be up and walking around alive, but I am. In my experience I was greeted by many people, in a sense I felt like I knew them, but at the same time I did not specifically recognize any of them. I remember spending some time with them and them speaking to me. It seemed very real, it felt so very different than I feel things here, emotions amplified and so on. Could it have been the electrodes in my brain firing sporadically as I died and causing an odd dream or memory to be revealed, yes. Do I personally believe that it was just a hallucination, no having experienced it and trying for years to convince myself it was not real has become impossible. I would have to say yes in some cases the dead do greet the dying as we pass over.

Well it is true that once people undergo certain tramatic experiences, they tend to look at things in a very different light. They sometimes grab hold even more to the spiritual , whereas they probably didn't so much before.

I believe there are always spirits around us. They might be on different levels but they are pretty much made up the same way. They can mess with the living a bit on our own plain of existance, they can communicate pretty darn well with others on the dream plain sometimes, perhaps OBE experiences. I don't see why not.

Everybody has their own set of unique moments in their lives, and it's in those moments that change and mold who we are. We question, if it was the spiritual that had some influence in the matter. Maybe so, maybe not....it's all up to the person to decide.

I will give you my opinion the best that I can. I work for an ER, yes, is a tedious job, because you must know how to separated your feelings and emotion to the point, were you are just like a robot. LOL. Well, when the older members of our generation arrived, they are already in a different "mode" of living. They are already, mentally, getting prepared for the after life. Now, this sensation, is beautiful, from the calm in their faces to the surrender of their soul. There is a different view, when someone show up, let say, with a bullet to their chest. They don't want to admit that they are dying, and always, is more difficult to see them depart and yes, they don't greet death. Death just take over, without asking.

I know from my own NDE that iot does change a person and how they see things. When I got in my car accident I cleaqrly saw my granfather standing in the middle of the road and then also standing on the side of the road and again when i was in the ambulance going in and out life as it would seem. I died 3 times on the way to the hospital this morning and I can still hear my grandfather tell me it was not my time.

The last few years I was taken care of my grandmother, and in the end before she passed, she continue to hold conversations with my granfather whom had passed away 4 years prior. She would also see her dog whom has also passed away many years before.

So yes I think those that are near their end time on this world are greeted by those that have gone before us.

while there are some amazing things done by the human mind, there are plenty of medical doctors and nurses (some of whom i personally know) that are full believers in the reality of the supernatural nature of near death experiences.
my question is this: if its just the human mind, why dont people see their still living loved ones that arent there?

ive never heard of someone near death seeing aunt matilda who lives in the next town over showing up in the room, when in reality she is playing bridge with uncle leo.

i always seem to here about aunt matilda who died 6 years back showing up.

why would that be?

inquiring minds want to know...

As to the question does the dead greet the dying, I feel they do if not then there would not be so many stories to the fact that people see or talk to the dead as they are ill and dying.

Yet, I also know people do see the dead/spirits/ghost whatever one wish to call it that are not on deaths door, some feel it is a gift some a curse. yet, each day we take a breath could be our last cause we start to die from the time we are born. So who is to say that is why it happens or does not happen to the ones not on death door.

But, a firm believethat we do see our loved ones who has passed when our time nears.

LordWolf that is a great point! We never hear of people speaking of near death experiences and seeing people who are currently alive. It is always someone who has passed on before them. I never really thought about that, and am very glad you pointed this out for the discussion.

I remember being in the hospital when Mom passed away. She was there long enough to see her first great grandchild born and to hold him. what keeps coming to my mind is that even to the last she was more concerned about her grandson than she was about dying. she wanted to make sure he got the book she had promised him before she had gotten so sick. My sister told her not to worry she would see that her son got the book mom had promised him. she was holding on to life for just that reason. after Laurie had told her that she relaxed and it was not to long after that she passed away. The funny thing is when Dad passed away he died on almost the same day and in the same month as mom did. he just died in 1999.. she passed away in 2005. It is funny how God has things planned for us. I always wonder why when i tried to leave this world . he told me no and made me face my mistakes and carry on.
