What do you known of them? How did you heard of them?

I know of Elizabeth Bathory. I read about her in the Oxford Book of Gothic Tales. She said to have been linked somehow to Vlad the Impaler.

hoenstly the only thing Ive ever heard about blood and bathory was the fact she wanted eternal beauty so she slaughtered young virgin girls bathed in their blood not fed just bathed

and she thought this kept her young.

gilles de Rais was a friend of Joan of Arc and tried to start the boy scout movement ahead of baden powel.
marquis de sade wrote justin and julliette, and also started the first BDSM club. he'd have liked it here.

In my opinion just because a person drinks blood or bathes in it does not make them a true vampire, and i believe with all the people you listed they either drank, bathed or liked blood, but were not true vampires...

ah - but neither does it mean they were not vampires. de Sade wrote stories about vampires. he invented some fun games.

sergeant bertrand was not a vampire - he was supposedly a werewolf - though he was actually a necrophage, and possibly a necrophile. more of a ghoul really.

i think to many love to put blame on something being paranormal and or metaphysical

not all events are anything more then what they are read as some people read too deeply into these things

Sorry, gothbaby6, there is no connection between Vlad Tepes and Erzebet Bathory:
they lived in a different time and place and even tortured pretty different and from different reasons! :))

The Bathory Countess drinked blood also during her tortures and her reason was pretty close to the a sanguinar from our times.But I think that none of them are really vampires like in Stoker`s book beacuse Dracula was... DEAD or better ...undead ;)
But metaphorically speaking they all deserve that name.

Bathory didn't actually drink or bath in blood according to historical record. The reality is that she just liked to murder the young girls that worked for her. Got a kick out of it on some level and got away with it for a long time because of her stature, political connections, relations and wealth.

hmm ill have to check in on that felix Ive only heard the stories about her bathing

never heard of her drinking the blood though

I am sorry but the papers from the countess`s process state clearly that she bathed and drinked the blood of the young girls during the torture.

there is a tenuous link between Bathory and Vlad - they used the same crest, and it is claimed they are in some way related. then again, almost all European royalty is related somewhere down the line, and crests are often passed along, or stolen.

haha, yeah, the european elite like to inbreed. its kinda freaky but thats the only way to keep the family line 'pure' i guess.

I have read "Justine ,les infortune de la vertue" but there is not a vampire book I assure you.

The Basarab`s crests(Vlad Tepesh was from the Basarab Dynasty :the grandson of Micea The Old) are centered on two crests: Two black heads (or three sometimes) and the other one (the one used by Vlad himself) a black bird(a sort of vulture) named "pajura" with a cross.
The crest of Vlad Dracul(the Vlad Tepes`s father) was sometimes a dragon biting his tail and with a cross on it`s back.
The crest of Bathory family was composed from three wolf fangs.
I see no resemblance there.
Also they were not kin even if they were both related by far (far alliances- not blood related)with the Corvin dynasty.

well I do not think we will ever know the truth unless some one is still alive from then LOL and actually seen what all happened.

I must repeat :
Vlad Tepes was not related with Bathory family although he was fighting in the same army in Serbia with an ancestor of Erzebet Bathory against turks in Serbia after 1470.

The reasons for their killings were very different too.I am afraid that some american guys does not want to be aware of this.Please read history before posting in such a thread.

i have not heard of many of them but some i have only read about

some people dont have an understanding of history. ive never even heard of a connection between bathory and tepes until just now. and as far as ive seen the only connection the two have is bloody killing techniques. and if thats all it takes for some people to say they are related, you might as well say jack the ripper is some how related to them both!

Countess Bathory killed because she was afraid to grew old and ugly about 200-600 innocent girls.So the people from her parts hated her(even the nobles).

Vlad Tepes killed over 200 000 turks because he should defend the christian civilisation(the occident LOL) and his people.
For that he remained in the romanian people history as one of the greatest hero.
He refused to give 500 young romanian children every year so they could become the war dogs of the sultan.He also took revenge of the ones who killed his father and brother Mircea in an ugly way (their bodies were mocked and tortured).
That`s why the people love him even today and protect his memory.

i got my info about the crest from an old book by ornella volta. i forget where i read about there being a family link - probably wikki.

If you can't have slaughter without laughter, then Elizabeth must have had a near fatal case of the giggles, and Vlad must have laughed himself to death. Maybe that was the connection.

I have been studying this thread for a bit now, and am in complete agreeance with Dragonrouge.

Liz Bathory was taken into a wall of her own domicile and therefore bricked up. No proof that she survived. The domicile itself is said to be haunted.

The marques de sade did not write about vampires, but was said in some fiction in common times that he was metophorically speaking...One himself.

Liz Bathory is nor ever was related to Ztepesh. No matter what Wiki you look to for information, most of the Wiki's are full of hobgobble to begin with, and are not quite referenced enough to back up quality information.

I know most of the historical figures on the list you gave, but only a few were subject to vampirism.

Bloody Mary did drink and bathe in the blood of young virgins. When she saw it wasn't helping she started a school of 25 young girls that were of wealth and beauty. The bodies were found by the towns people and she was exposed.

Dragon is without a doubt right about this. He should know..that is his countrys history...not ours.

i dont have any doubt in dragon's expertise. i find it annoying that people cluster other people together without thinking it through.

Vlad Tepes was from the Basarab family.
This is the seal of the Basarab (WALACHIN=ROMANIAN, not hungarian)family.
In the origin the Basarab Dynasty had two arab (black) heads on their crest.There are two possible links there
1.Bas-arab(means head of arab)
2.Black heads (the founder of the Dynasty was the legendary misterious figure the Black King)
In time the black heads from the seal of basarabs become two princes heads.
In the last picture you can see Mircea`s and Vlad`s heads instead of the princes heads.
They have a tree in the middle.(1439)





I still do not see any connection between those two families and two persons Erzebet and Vlad.They even spoke different languages(magiar and romanian as their mother languages) and had different lands under their possesion.
