I'm always telling people to read Joseph Laycock's book and I'm sure some have never heard of him. He's not part of the vampire community. He has a Divinity degree. He studied religion but for most Vampirism is not connected directed to religion but not for all mind you. Mainly those he interacted with at the time.
Here is an interview with him. They give some of his background and then question and answer.

Insightful indeed. However at the end I chuckled when he went into mentioning further study into "otherkin" as in people who believe themselves to be fairs, demons, and creatures.
