Crab Updates

I was woken up by clattering and clunking from the crab tank last night. I turned on the light and went out to see what was going on. I found two of the little guys on their backs with their claws and antennae waving in the air, one little crab on the back of the big guy, and the big guy grumpily scootching around in his corner.

The little ones love trying to get on top of the big guy and ride on his back. They think he is some sort of crab toy that they can play on. He puts up with a lot, but when he wants to be left alone he lets them know. He is so much bigger than they are, so he just moves them out of the way.

I righted the two little guys and they quickly scuttled away, but the one on top of the big guy hung in there. As I watched, the two little ones that had run off came back and settled down, and the one on top of the big guy came down to join his comrades.

I came home tonight to find them all snuggled up together in the corner.

The food dish, as usual, looked like a war zone.

Visualizing a small crab trying to get on the back of a big crab, I suddenly come to the realization--I have no idea how crabs breed. Are they like mammals? Fish? Birds? Insects? I can't see any of that working. Not that I want to, in that manner.

Thought of the day.

Here's the dope on hermit crab sex. The males place their sperm into the openings on the backs of the female's back pair of walking legs. She attaches the fertilized eggs to her abdomen inside her shell and carries them around till they are ready to hatch. When she is ready to release her eggs, she goes down to the seashore (mating and reproduction take place only in their natural habitat. They don't breed in captivity), snips off the egg clusters and flicks the eggs into the ocean. The eggs hatch upon contact with sea water and the little crabs are born. They swim around in the ocean and feed on small critters till it is time to come ashore, find a shell, and live on land.

Crab Doin's

The big crab was awake so I took him out of the tank for some one on one time. He had been snoozing quite a bit lately, they tend to do that when it gets really cold. A sort of semi hibernation. He woke up and wanted to stretch so I took him out and let him crawl up my arm.

He wasn't satisfied with that so I put him down and watched with amusement as he made the circuit around my coffee table on the floor. He just followed the outline of the bottom of it. I put him in the middle of the floor and gave him one of my tennis shoes to climb on, he likes to do that. He wasted no time in clambering up the side, then all of a sudden whoomp! Over the top and down into the shoe he goes. Crab legs flailing; he had landed upside down. Mommy to the rescue, I quickly fished him out.

Two of the other little crabs noticed the big guy was out of the tank and quickly scurried to the warm spot in the corner he had vacated. Big crab had dug down deep in the sand to make a bed for himself, and the little guys almost disappeared into it. Now tell me creatures don't have human emotions..those little guys were so happy that they found a crab-scented warm spot!

When I put the big guy back in, after a drink and a snack, he went back to his corner. He saw the two interlopers and just pushed them right on out. I rescued them from being totally buried in sand and made a little spot for them in another corner. But no, they weren't satisfied with that...they trundled back to where the big guy was, and bit by bit they nudged their way next to him. Now I have one big guy and two little acolytes all snuggled in the corner.

The other little crab has buried himself under the water dish. I just checked, and he's fine. He likes it under there where it's warm and moist.
