The moon rose high as the dark sun fell
Beyond the horizon's orange haze.
A faint glimmer in the distance was all I could tell
Of society these most recent days.
A scent hung in the air, one sweet and chill,
Sent as a soft greeting from the rain,
As I leaned over my windowsill
To gaze upon the mist-besotted lane.
Deep canyons in the mud where wheels had run
Now gathered calm, undisturbed streams.
And the whispers of the willows were one
With the thunder which haunted my dreams.
