this comes from the buzz log, something that i thought a dear friend might like. this is only one section of it, but I found the sounds of science interesting.
It's not every day that a tiny thing like a particle is big in Buzz. But this week, the search for the "God particle" had a huge musical debut. A little doodad called the iPhone 4 made a splash on the Web. And the first of two lunar eclipses make an appearance — or is it a disappearance? — this weekend. All this and more in your Buzz Week in Review.
The sounds of science
Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) searching for the "God particle" have translated their data into sound. The $8 billion atom smasher that is 300 feet underground on the Swiss-French border was actually built to find the so-called God particle (officially known as Higgs boson). But so far, no dice.
The scientists thought that if they couldn't see it, then maybe they could listen for it instead. So far, the subatomic particle exists only in theory, but if discovered is thought to be the building block of the entire universe. Pretty cool. What's cooler: hearing it. The data set to music sounds like a cross between electronic wind chimes and the soundtrack to "The X-Files." Think New Age meets sci-fi creepy. You can check out the sounds at the BBC. Lookups on "god particle music," "god particle sound," and "god particles" crescendoed in the Search box.
