In Jewish folklore, a golem is an animated being created entirely from inanimate matter.
The most famous golem narrative involves Rabbi Judah Loew, 16th century Rabi in Bohemia who created a golem to defend the Jewish community. It is said that the golem still waits in the Prague Synagogue to awake when he is called...
The legend of the Golem has made him a popular figure in Bohemia.
Does anyone have any other stories of golems, or similar from other folklore traditions?

From what I can remember, they can be made from clay, dirt, mud, leaves, wood, whatever is at hand for the person to use to create the golem.

I did'nt know about the Bohemian Golem, but have read of something like it originating in the far east.

Magicians would take part in contests to see how many they could control at once.

Can't thing of the name of them just now, jig something ?

Here is an interesting little bit I found.

"A 16th century manuscript tells of Samuel the Pious, who created a mute golem that accompanied him on his travels and waited on him. In 17th century Poland this servant becomes dangerous. Another tale concerns Rabbi Elijah Baal Shem of Chełm (d. 1583). Written in 1674, it tells of the fasting that was necessary to create a (mute) golem which did the housework. The word emeth ('truth'), written on its forehead, activated the golem, which grew steadily. Rabbi Elijah’s grew so big he could not reach its forehead to rub out the letter aleph (changing emeth into meth, 'death'). Instead he commanded the golem to remove his boots and when he bent down he erased aleph and the golem turned to mud again, collapsing on and killing Elijah. This is the 'classic' later golem myth, although the idea of writing emeth on the forehead is older than the Chełm story - 13th century Hasidic texts claim that it was written on Adam’s forehead (Scholem). Other versions have emeth sewn onto the arm, or written on a parchment and placed in the mouth (in this case the trick to erasing aleph is kissing the golem)."

taken from this site

Personally, I had only heard about the slip of paper in the mouth. I thought you were supposed to write what you wanted it to do on the paper though. I believed that it was basically a servant of sorts and had little intelligence. I had sort of forgotten about this topic until it was brought up here.

Well in Denmark we have a great viking called Holger danske. He is a stone statue that sits and waits and if Denmark is in grave danger and you call his name, he will rise from the dungeons and destroy the threats.

I have also read that you can make one out of the thin air by reciting the words of creation, either those outlined in the Sefer Yetzirah or the name of God. It takes 30 minutes of intense concentration and there is actually a site that tells you how to do it here:

In New Mexico, there is the annual burning of Old Man Gloom, also known as Zozobra. He is a 50 ft. paper marionette, and his burning commences the three-day celebration of Fiestas de Santa Fe.

People write their worries on slips of paper and lay them at his feet. Inspiration for Zozobra came from the Holy Week celebrations of the Yaqui Indians of Mexico; an effigy of Judas, filled with firecrackers, was led around the village on a donkey and later burned. or in Spanish for "the gloomy one."

The effigy is a giant animated wooden and cloth marionette that waves its arms and growls ominously at the approach of its fate. A major highlight of the pageant is the fire spirit dancer, dressed in a flowing red costume, who appears at the top of the stage to drive away the white-sheeted "glooms" from the base of the giant Zozobra.

Golems

Golems are magical constructs of stone and machinery that have often been used for two purposes: guarding cities or mines, and helping their mage creators complete their work. Only recently, and only once, when Rentar-Ihrno unleashed them on Monroe Province, were they used as an instrument of war.

Types of Golems
Guardian Golems

Large, stone, grey, and lumbering, they take very simple commands.
Plague Golems

Rentar-Ihrno designed five types of golems specifically to ravage Monroe Province during the Plagues. As far as anyone knows, all of the plague golems have been destroyed, although their prototypes may still exist in a Vahnatai lab somewhere.
Blade Golems

Blade golems are designed to be devastating in melee combat. Equipped with several blades protruding from their arms, they can hit more rapidly and often than a human.
Fire Golems

Fire golems are elementals. They can breathe fire, similar to that of a dragon, although far less powerful.
Ice Golems

Ice golems are also elementals, and more devastating than fire golems. Their cold breath penetrates easily through armor, stunning soldiers and opening them up for the kill.
Jeweled Golems

Jeweled golems are even more dangerous than the elemental golems as they can shoot electricity and they are harder to kill. The early model jeweled golems had the ability to spit acid at their opponents, but this was phased out in favor of the ray weapon for the later models.
Demon Golems

Demon golems are the most dangerous of the plague golems because of their limited intelligence and magical prowess. They can also breathe fire, although they prefer to pepper their enemies with spells.
Controlling Golems

Golems are usually controlled by a stationary command centre, which is also often the golems' main energy source. They can exist, fight, etc. without a constant energy source as well, but then they are either much weaker or they can't exist and fight for a long time, but with their normal power. Either way, they will run out of energy sooner or later and crumble.

Stationary sources are often too weak and can only give energy to the golems for a quite limited time, but special crystals can work years without any problems, due to the energy being better conducted through the crystal ends. At the time of the Surface Plagues, the Vahnatai used powerful Mind Crystals to control the golems. Once they and all possible energy sources were destroyed, most golems crumbled or got unusable.

Mages who are able to create golems are usually also able to give them energy, but if the mage is not exceptionally strong, both the golem and the mage can exist, but both are weakened. Stronger mages can control many golems alone, without an energy source, but if too many golems are connected with a magic caster, it shortens the lifetime heavily. If the golems are only connected to a mage, they usually got no emergency energy stored and crumble or get immobile as soon as the living energy source dies.

i believe as long as the matter is inanimate a golem can be made from practically anything,

trees not so much since tree's in themselves are alive however dead petrified trees possibly.
i also believe that each culture has a form of golem, you just have to dig out the similarities in order to find them. Some believed the egyptians had a powerful golem named amuk who was also known to be the watch dog of anubis I believe my egyptian mythology is a bit rusty however so i could be mistaken on amuk's role, however the norse had a form of golem also known as frost giants. Despite them being believed in norse religion as something else. ice in nature is inanimate, however these giants were said to be made of ice.So thats one similarity, the difference is frost giants unlike a golem are not stupid and subserviant. So they differ there.
