High Gothic castle founded in 1348, which has a unique position among Czech castles. It was built by Czech King and Roman Emperor Charles IV as a place for safekeeping of the royal treasures, especially Charles's collection of holy relics and the coronation jewels of the Roman Empire. The first stay of Charles IV in the castle is documented in 1355 when he came to supervise the building works as well as the decoration of interiors, especially the castle chapels. The construction of the castle was finished in 1365 when the Chapel of the Holy Cross situated in the Great tower was consecrated. At the outbreak of the Hussite wars the castle became the place for safekeeping of the Czech coronation jewels, which were kept here, with the exception of several short-time breaks, for nearly 200 years. The castle was reconstructed in late Gothic style after 1480 and in Renaissance style in the last quarter of the 16th century. The present appearance of the castle comes from the last reconstruction, which was carried out in the purist neo-Gothic style by architect Josef Mocker at the end of the 19th century. Very impressive is the original step-like order of buildings. From the Well tower and Burgrave's palace located as the lowest you walk up to the majestic five-storied Imperial palace and further up towards the Marian tower. And finally at the top of the headland stands the monumental 60m high and separately fortified Great tower.

I looked for some pictures to put up for this but thought better to put the link, the stained glass seems to be a strong presence in gothic art.

I don't have a story to go with this photo to discuss the history. All I know is this was a very large castle ruin known as Berg Lichtenburg, outside of a region in Kusel, Germany.

Photobucket

This was one of five castle and church ruins I was able to tour during my two month work stint in southwestern Germany.

this is St Lawrence's church in Morecambe. it was built circa 1876 by a couple of architects well known for their gothic style. it's not been used as a church since the 1970s, and is in poor condition, but is a listed building. we are restoring it to use as a cafe / antique shop.
Photobucket
a previous owner (now serving a prison sentence) had no interest in maintaining it, and just used it to store stolen goods, but now we have plans for it.
Photobucket
some of the stain glassed windows arent too badly damaged, so we hope to restore them too. we plan to uninstal the pigeons though. with extreme prejudice if i get my way.

I consider tattoos art as well. So being that I have a Vampire bite tattooed on my neck I would say that falls into the subject. Sorry I can't resize photo well without distorting image.

It just occured to me I showed my pic but forgot to tell. The story is that I like the legend of vampires and wanted something to represent that on me without tattooing the whole vampire. Geno thought up the bite idea, so there it is. It was tattoed by Geno on me a few years ago.

Much to large for the space.

http://photobucket.com/image/gothic%20glass/GaryAZ/DSCF1658.jpg?o=30

Sainte Chappelles Stained glass is mostly Original with only minor restorations this is a wall to wall piece, I feel the purples where a bold choice of color in their time.

One of my favourties by Caspar David Friedrich:

Monastery Graveyard in the Snow -- 1817-19 (Oil on canvas)

All that remains of the once grand abbey is a ruined nave, perhaps of the church. Now used as a cemetary, the trees have surrounded it, but unlike the earlier version, here the trees add majesty and grandeur as they stand like tall pillars around the sacred precepts, rather than intrude upon it as in the earlier version. And the grave-stones have been converted into monks, processing into the church.

Of course, the church is no longer
there, and neither are the monks. So the painting is a reflection upon the transitoriness of all earthly things. One could also interpret the picture in a spooky sense: the monks are ghosts haunting their former monastery, and the shadowy bleakness of a winter day makes them almost seem present.

Ten years after first painting this scene, Friedrich returned to it for a monumental new treatment. Unfortunately, this picture, which he entitled Monastery Graveyard in the Snow (Klosterfriedhof im Schnee), was destroyed during the air-raids of World War II.

Very Absorbing art.. thank you for sharing, It seems Gothic Art tends to be destroyed a lot. I find a lot of restored Stain Glass windows as well, some of which the artist where not allowed to take credit for.

A child's grave at the Mission Delores, in San Francisco...I use to visit the grave a lot. Now, they are pretty much off-limits, as the area is rather small, and the graves stones and statuary are very delicate.

The first picture is of the gate entrance to a Cemetary in Brooklyn, New York called Green-Wood Cemetery.

Green-Wood Cemetery"..."is the largest and among the most influential of early American rural cemeteries, carefully sited with dramatic views of the city and harbor below. Established in 1838, Green-Wood has the most extensive and intact landscape created following the principles of Andrew Jackson Downing, the most prominent landscape architect of the antebellum period. It is outstanding for its cohesive, picturesque character, integrated Gothic Revival architecture, and high integrity.

The next picture is just one of the beautiful tombstones that I think perfectly depicts the Gothic Revival style. .

I've got horse drawn carriages - which always feel gothic to me...no black though - just white. Actually I've wanted a black vis-a-vis forever, but they just don't sell well in Florida. So....that's kinda gothicly artistic..I think.

with all these pics I notice most of the gothic architecture shown is mainly related to a religious use at one point.

Most were I assume, as for castle Kings and Queens were often really religious to a certain point and consider the achitecture of their bulding to be sacred on certain portion of the infrastructure.

I wonder if besides castle and churches the past has left us sme other gothic contructions.?

i think maybe religion had a very important deal to do with the gothic structures and with the time era back then.
