A few weeks ago I was shopping with a friend, I was interested in taking up Tarot and read that the best way to find a deck for yourself is to pick one that you most feel drawn to.
As it happens theres a few occult/wiccan shops near where I stay that specialises in crystals, candles, books etc and as we went through each of the shops there was nothing i felt specially drawn to until the last shop.
I must have spent almost half an hour in this shop looking through everything and looking at all the tarot decks they had available until my friend spotted a glass cabinet right at the back of the shop. (very cliche i know- but true!)
There was a tarot deck in there that I felt, Im not sure what it was but it was almost a case of I NEEDED to have it. I cant remember for the life of me what it was called, but it had a black bird sitting atop a skull on the front of the box.
I couldnt see a price for it so I asked the women who runs the shop how much they cost. She came over, looked at the tarot deck, looked at me then picked up a different set of cards and said that this deck was probably better.
I replied that I wasnt interested in the other deck as I was really intruiged by the ones in the glass case and I kid you not- the women FREAKED! Started shouting stuff about it being evil or something and told me and my friend to get out.
Long story I know but my question is this. Can a tarot deck really be "evil"? Was it something she saw in me? Or was she just being overly protective. If this thing was evil what the heck was she doing selling it in the shop?
If it was evil why are they selling the deck? That makes no sense I've been doing Tarot quite a while and never have heard of an evil deck. She sounds as if she needs to find some where else to work.
eh so many different companies make tarot cards I am just skeptical of their effectiveness
Lol I think she may have been attempting to pull your plonker.
I have never heard of evil cards...well unless I am playing Poker in which case those dam cards are blooming evil!!
Why not make your own..it's not hard to do and costs next to nothing. Or if your rubbish at art get a friend to make them for you. Though it is much better if you were to make your own.
This thread was going off topic - once again.
KEEP them on topic or posts will be deleted and/or threads will be shut down.
I have never heard of anyone acting like that about a tarot deck. It's kind of amusing. Decks are not evil but perhaps the creator of them has a background that is considered unsavory and they have been told some story about its creation being dark. I have been around readers for years and never heard anyone speak of an "evil" tarot or oracle deck of cards. It is the expertise of the reader understanding the symbolism of the cards that has to do with your reading. It is subjective of an individual deciding a deck is evil. I think they acted very unprofessionally and have some sort of superstition behind their actions. I would just chalk it off to a bad experience and go somewhere else and not take it personally.
I will put some things in my journal about the symbolism you describe and a picture of a deck card. Perhaps it is the one you looked at, not sure. I don't want to go off topic.
Tarot deck evil?
I would say NO.
Tarot has everything to do with the reader's abitlity to read them, not the cards themselves.
She should know that,so her alledged reaction is odd .
Maybe she freaked out because you liked the symbolism, but it sure seems unlikely, that she would be affected by your choice..after all,its a shop that sells things of a "magical" nature..things that could absolutely be used for good or evil .
Even so,a sale is a sale, and I doubt she would have even cared about whether they were " evil" or not.
This story doesnt make much sense to me to be honest.
WOW..Congratulation...You are a new victim of free Marketing, used by many occult stores. They placed something out that nobody can buy, and they tell you that is possessed or what ever. The idea, is for you to spread the news and make your friends comes to the store to see the item, and while there, buy something. Tarot cart are not evil, may be the one who is reading it. I own 3 decks and so far so good. My humble opinion.
Yikes! That's crazy! a deck can have negative vibrations and its up to the shop owner to keep all decks cleansed and free from any vibration until bought. This shop you went to sounds seedy and shady. Was this woman possessed? I heard stories of people possessed acting weird of strange. Most importantly. why the hell was the deck on sale if it was "evil". That reeks of unprofessionalism, ethics violation and if you want to go deeper, fraud.
A spell can be cast on an object, so a deck of cards is no exception.
I entirely believe that anything can carry residual energy and negative energy. I personally do not believe in true or pure "evil". I do believe there are very heavy negative influences that can remain with objects.
Its possible that this woman knew who owned the deck previously and felt that maybe it shouldn't go to you for that reason. Maybe she didn't want the negative influence to get attached to you and felt the only way was to scare you away from it.
The deck being evil itself? No way.
Something evil attached to that particular set of cards? Most definitely a possibility.
whats it on sale for? somebody once tried to sell me a rifle and as soon as i touched i just threw it away and said "what has it done?"
he said its previous owner killed himself with it.
I have seen someone reference "The dark side of tarot" but that was just one person's opinion. When she typed that I couldn't fathom how you'd turn a reading "dark". I suppose it's possible. It's just something I figured I'd share with you since you asked.
As for getting or reading a "dark" tarot in a sitting, I can believe it. If either person (the reader or the recipient) have negative energy or bad intentions then I can see that energy affecting the reading definitely.
Tarot decks are neutral, neither good nor evil, they are a tool used to see the omens of the future, as for that particular deck, it could have been reserved for someone else, and the whole freaking out could have been an act
few years ago, I picked up a set of cards.
for the first time in a loooong time
just don''t gamble, or ... 'do' cards.
but, I was at a friends, saw the cards and...
..read my Tarot.
Hadn't done so for years.
Is it evil. No.
Is it to be wary of, yes.
I HAVE BEEN READING TAROT FOR THE LAST TEN YEARS AND AS A MATTER OF FACT.. CARDS CAN NOT BE EVIL..THE PERSON WHO IS USING THEM DETERMINES WHETHER THE CARDS WILL BE USED FOR EVIL INTENT..WHEN PICKING OUT YOUR DECK, YOU ARE RIGHT THE CARDS WILL PICK THEIR OWNERS..THIS WOMAN PROBABLY HAD A DECK EXACTLY LIKE THE ONES YOU WANTED AND SHE MUST HAVE HAD A BAD EXPERIENCE WITH THEM..THE CARDS WORK DIFFERENTLY FOR EACH AND EVERY PERSON...
I totally agee. It's like the saying, guns don't kill people, people kill people. She undoubtedly had a bad experience with that particular deck.
Sounds to me like you found a pack of old alchemical tarot cards . The picture you refer to of the crow sitting on the skull is the death card for that type of deck. It's not a Bad card ,the death card signifies change that's all the shedding of one thing and the start of another. She was probably off her rocker .if I where you I'd go back and see if anyone else works there and by the deck from them if they still refuse to sell them them look them up on- line or find another store.
My guess is she wanted you to have a different deck and when you wouldnt back down she got angry. Gone are the days when customers are right.
it might not be the cards that where evil. there are people that can seal things in to objects. the old owner could of sealed a bad spirit or something into them
Because really, how can something that helps one see into future be evil?
The cards are simply tool to be interpreted, not set a future for someone.
I have never heard of a tarot deck being evil. I have used a few different decks and my mom even has a couple. Of course she has one in particular that she even puts under her pillow. So yes the deck and you should definitely have a good connection. Not to mention that decks can be used by all types of faith.
I think the lady may have been a little crazy and just didn't want to sell you that deck...or maybe she thought the other one would fit you better. Either way she should not have stood in your free will to buy whichever deck you were most drawn to.
