just a curiosity...
who can RIP threads? y?
it also happend that thread i wrote disappear... was that a close thing to rip?
Yeah that sux gotta admit I mean 5 mods for over a 1,000 ppl' thoughts :s I dunno but hey most of the time they do a good job so its all good :)
OB1, all of the moderators can at their discretion choose to either delete a post, delete a thread, or close (RIP) a thread.
Normally, a thread will get a RIP if it has grown too big. It is a huge strain on the database to continue to pull 100's of messages.
When it comes to "questionable" threads, we prefer to RIP a thread so that a) any salvagable part of a thread can remain or b) to stand as a testament to what NOT to say in a thread.
Otherwise, we reserve the right to completely delete any threads we deem abusive, repetitive, or just plain stupid.
The main difference here being that you can see who placed a RIP on a thread. If you are concerned with why, you can ask that admin. Ask nicely without temper. The Admin had good reason to do what they did. If you want to appeal, do so with tact.
If your thread is deleted, sorry... you'll never know who or why. *shrug Just move along.. nothing to see here. *wink.
The Elder Lurker Daniel
Actually ElderDaniel, (and I never told the Administrators about this), regular users can't see who closed a thread... Only Administrators can.
I added that a while ago (when the complaining about all the thread closing started) so I could see who was doing what. At the time, I wasn't sure it was a good idea to make that info public.. Administrators were coming under enough fire at the time.
As it sits now, with Premium Members able to close their own threads, I think it's probably best if everyone see's that info... So I'll be opening it up.
As to deletions, I am probably the only Administrator that deletes threads. The Master Vampires are more inclined to close. (Personally I would prefer it if they deleted more of them) But I don't remember deleting any of your threads yesterday ob1.
ive had 2 of mine ripped and not sure why, but it would be nice to know exactly "why" a thread is ripped to know not to make another one similar to it in the future. *shrugs*
just an idea. maybe the mod that closes the thread, could post a final comment as to why the thread is being RIP'ed before actually applying the RIP.
then people will know when they read their thread, and we won't have people sending messages to the mods asking why, or starting another thread, asking why their thread was closed (no offence intended ob1 as you asked more than jsut why).
*shrugs* just an idea
actually i have seen Daire do just that
the option of immortality thread is a good example
Well, a lot of the time we do post a reason before closing. I've asked that it always be done... But at the same time, I understand why final posts aren't always posted... It depends upon the thread.
Cancer, i have no knowledge of php, but how hard would it be to re-write the RIP script so that you had to enter a reason, and that reason got posted as the final comment¿
just an idea.
It wouldn't be hard. But I have faith in my Administrators. In some cases, believe me, putting a final post is unwarranted. Each thread is unique.
it would be nice to be told of a rip and why in my case i was told afterwards..well informed
A Post Mortem of the Realm of Moreish RIP's and Deletions
To answer some of the comment posted by members.
* I will quite often post a parting comment on a thread I close, or send the person a personal message as to why, It's usually polite. However, when you consider what Chaos posted before... 5 mods to 1000+ users... I run out of time often, and just barely get through reading them and closing some, so it's not always possible to do so much to keep everyone happy. Like the other mods, I have a life outside of the Rave.. abiet a small one, it keeps me very very busy.
By the time a mod gets through thier messages, reply and handle the influx of new ones, read a few forums and close a few, scan a few profiles, review thier own to reply to rates etc... 2 hours have passed.
* I rarely delete unless it's really really crap. But at Cancer's request I have been doing more and more. But usually after I've RIP's it first for a few hours.
* I was aware the users couldn't see who closed a thread, but just like Cancer said, we are often under enough fire with out adding in fuel. Having said this I also made it a point not to tell other users who did it, when they complained who closed it.
In conclusion - Love your Admins, they work hard for you (especially the big guys himself)....... If you want it to be physical love... You may have to apply in writting first >:)
