What is it? A Cult, A Religion, or Human Choice. Don't get to mystical on me.
it is the choice of the human aspect of us which decides whether or not to allow the vampiric aspect which resides within us all to obtain a measure of control over our concious actions.
"vampiric aspect which resides within us all"
I do not believe that it resides in us all I feel it may be our animal instinct that you speak about. Since the human race was herbivores and then evolved in carnivores.
further, it is my opinion that we are all merely fragments of G*d itself and have been cast out into the darkness of this universe to battle ourselves for control of our souls upon this firmament which is the 'middle earth' (not to be confused with Tolkien, I speak of the place between 'heaven' and 'hell').
I see this as something of a personal religion also, but I disagree, I beleive that inside the human mind lay all of the possible paths toward either side, light or dark and it is the choices we make, based upon our learning and experience, which shapes our person and in so doing, treads the path for us...whether we like it or not...sort of...an unconcious self determination of our fate...does that make sense?...lol
Purgatory is a catholic belief and falls into that aspect. But we are not fallen gods in any shape or form or so I do believe.
ah, my error. I wished merely to convey the commonly accepted aspects of light and dark..I do not beleive in catholic hell, but thee is an opposite to all things, obviously, so that which I speak of is the antithesis of where G*d resides. similar in fashion to chaos and order....we came from perfect order into chaos and now we are trying to make sense of it all...resulting in the eternal question of why?
The human mind is a blank slate at birth. All information is taught to us by the people that bring us up. If we know nothing more then evil then evil be considered good to us. I use the example of good and evil but it can relate to anything else. If you were brought up by dogs then you will acted like a dog and only have human traits by appearance.
but I disagree.
I would say that we are bound to our past as in blood from the father of my father, et al, to the beginning of mankind, back past the evolution of species and into the very earth itself, onwards to a point of gaseous molecules and so also the sun...for by the fact that we exist in the present, we are the pinnicale of the evelution of the universe itself and in so being are children of G*d and G*d must be within all of us, as must be the 'devil' (or anti-god) and it all depends, as you say, upon our upbringing, how we conceive that g*dliness and how we act upon our understanding of it....I am rambling now...please excuse me...
Well Said Dark, and very true.
As for your question I believe it's simply Choice. I choose to drink blood because I enjoy it and love the flavor. There are very few things in life that are not brought about the choices we make.
I use Catholicism as a point of reference for that fact that most are brought up with it and tend to turn later in life. Not all but most people do know something about it in some way or form.
The catholic religion and it's views have shaped many of the views on life as we know it to be. Definitely works for proving your point.
I see, then I guess that it is a relevant point...but I don't beleive it and I was never educated to it and in fact, I dont beleive I read the bible (either testament) until my twenties...but still I had a concept of there being a bad place and a good place to go to within me...so does this not mean that within everyone, even at birth, there is a...genetic knowledge of this?
Stabb we are off the topic if you wish to continue this please send a message and we can talk further.
ok.your right, sorry..your post asks which...I beleive it to be all.
people can choose to be vampires, which can become a personal religious experience and may evolve into a collective.
It depends greatly on the 'person'. For example, alot of people have a 'blood fetish' so thats what their idea of vampirism would be.
Alot of people believe Vampirism to be a bit like the boy scouts, you find yourself joining a group of like minded people and start to dress the same as everyone else go to strange places and learn new skills (drawing blood) and visit places you might not in the past more often (graveyards) and find yourself obeying the rules of a master (founder of the group).
Mostle though, if someone was to say they were 'into' Vampirism, they most likey would have a great interest into the fiction side and the media side, most often they will frequent the 'Goth' scene as such and fantasize about being immortal, drinking blood.. the whole big picture of being a Vampire....
(And for some others, its just a way to piss there (oftten filthy rich) parents off.)
i belive it is a cult well known but still underground not out where the public can see it and only selective people are let in. but it also is a bit of human choice because the members have chosen to
join and become a vampire. but it is also part religion because vampirissim has
become so wide spread that it is all over the world like a religion so my answer to your question is, vampireism is all of the above it is human choice, cult and religion
Vampirism - its nothing more than erotic fetishism
Vampires embody a lot of things we all hold dear and sexy and appealing... youth, looks, sexual liberty and more
Given all those traits, no wonder why so many people have an interest in these figures of mythology
I always considered vampirism a lifestyle. It is a choice of lifestyle. But for some who have a very strong fetish for it, they don't really have a choice, they have to indulge. So maybe it's more like a curse to them?
I've been told that Vampirism is a religion, i dont know why but thats what ppl say. But I kinda think that Vampirism is a choice of lifestyle. We all choose to be here and we choose what we do. so yeah. . . im at a lose of words.
I think Dhampir has expressed most of my ideas of different perspectives that you can find all over the place.
However, i think ultimately its a choice... a choice of whether you want it to be a cult/religion/ way of life. Lets face it, we all have different desires to fulfill, and maybe one of those satisfies a person more than another.
For me however, its a perspective, and a private decision, and I dont really divulge into any details.
Hope that assisted.
I would agree with Octavia, Vampirism is a lifestyle therefore its a choice.
I would also add that it can be all since we choose to belong to a cult or religion and these words are a mere grouping of ppl with the same interest or choices.
I've heard people talk about it being a religion, like I've heard Gothic is a religion. But in my own opinion, it's by choice.
I believe its a choice, but its not always the persons choice.
I have never thought i was a vampire but because i enjoy drinking blood bitting people and other "Vampire traits" many people over the years have told me that is what i am.
sometimes society itself places these labels on people and they just come to accept them over time.
i actually have a question... for those of you that have responded that vampirism is a religion- what is your credo generally? i'm just curious.
Its a choice you make . You are what you are . because you want to be .
I am of the Christian Religion, yet I am a vampire... What does this mean?... It means that to be a vampire is not choice or religion... It is a born identity... If anyone would like to learn more, just ask...

I'd say that it is a Sub Culture:
I use the word "Culture" due to it having it's own Traditions behind it: Such as the Blood Fetish, Blood Play, Blood Lust, Religion, etc. The "Culture" has many stories of history, orgins, etc.
Till again.......

I would say that I feel that it is a cross between human choice and some kind of religious preference. But that is only how I feel. I have no way to prove my opinion.
Vampirism is a sub-culture and yes people who wish to be part of it tend to conform to the rituals and dressings. Comparing it to the Boy Scouts is a very good reference since they have an order of things to do and follow.
Instead of saying “Vampirism is it a cult / religion / or just plain human choice” I should say “Vampirism – A sub-culture that has many aspect."
i think its more of a choice then the others but it might be more like a spirital belonging but not like a religion kind of thing
I believe it can be anything a person wants it to be, so it has to be a choice. a person can choose what they want it to be
Dhampir has made a good statement. So has ladyatropos and everyone else. I believe it's a choice in what you want to believe it to be, a cult, religion, way of life, or a sexual attraction. I choice it to be a way of life with sexual attraction !!
I believe it is instinct and developes on your own persona level in your own time frame..
I believe that vampirism is definately a choice, that either people make or they dont.
i think its a little of several things.....
1 the kind of person you are/choice
2 can be a cult....tend to gather with others of the same like mind....
3 and of really not knowing why one is the way one is intill comeing to a place like this..... the finding out
hope i haven't lost anyone to what i mean...... ^_^
Aleks You can voice your own opinion if you want and not agree with the others.
some practice it as a religion, but to me it is neither, to me it is a way of being, just like being a normal human, you cant help that you are normal, just plain human. It's like that, you can't help if you are vampire, you just are, it's who you are, you were born that way, its a race. Some people who pretend to be vampires , try to be vampires, and arent really vampires, us real vampires can sence it, sometimes it gets irritating. there are also vampires out there that don't even know what they are, they need to be awakened, anyway, point being, just like any human race, vampire is a race you are born into, or possibly made into by another vampire.
just because someone "chooses" to drink blood, it does not mean they are a vampire, they are just someone who likes to drink blood. There are many types of vampires out there. Normal people just drinking blood just because, isnt a vampire
Also, if anyone has any questions, feel free to contact me
Its not really a choice, it just happens, but it is a choice if you wish to accept what you are or ignore it and try to find means to get around the curve of life energy depression.
Now certian teachings of houses, now that is when you can consider a religion or cult.
- Sin
scionofrequiem as far as energy depression blood medical speaking does not rejuvenate you outside of the physical bodily needs and even then you need more substance to complete that need. But this topic was not meant to talk about blood it was meant to talk about it being a cult religion or choice. From what I have read you have taken a choice and elevated it to a spiritual choice with a physical need.
Depression can be cured with drugs though I am against that path. But these are my opinions and with a medical background I can fight your reasoning with fact. Science and the unknown is an eternal battle like good vs evil.
Some things that happen in each persons life may lead to making a choice to want to be a vampire, or suicidal.
The way i believe, it's us as humans that make the choice weather to join/classify Vampirism a cult or believe in it so much that some it becomes a religion.
Or, us humans make the choice to join a cult, the cult follows Vampirism as a religion.
