You know, I'm sick of hearing that horror books, films, ect... are nothing more than tasteless trash that glorfies bloodshed.
Its my person belief that horror as an art form has many positive effects that the more uptight part of society refuses to look at.
For one, it allows people to excorcise the demons of their mind in a way other than acting out. Stephen King calls it, "feeding the gators in the canals of your mind."
What are some other personal or social benefits of the horror genre?
There is not much that can be said... Most, if not all, of us here would agree with that statement.. Nicely put...
I don't know about my beliefs on the subject. you are right, senseless bloodshed and gore is not horror. Horror is something that stirs the cold dark inside of you, or makes you think about something. Something that seeps into your cracks and freezes, spreading them wider for you to see.
horror ....good horror is facing the demons on the dark side of the mirror....
that darker side we all have that some fall to in their weakness..but all of us possess....
I'm noticing that lately horror movies, are all the same, and something that must be a horror is being a comedy.
I like watching a good horror movie or reading a good horror book.
Nothing makes more happy, and they inspire me,cause my imagination becomes more active, and if I'm in a bad mood it brings me a good one:)
to injoy horror is to feed that side of you mind that injoys being scared an safe at the same time, to read or watch a horror story unfold you can imers your self into it an live that fantasy, an thats a good thing for thos of us that love that darkside, its also a good form of ecapeisim, to get away from are own reality for a little wile
Exactly, and I like very much making fun and jokes to those who get scared >:)
i think that Horror strenghtens your mind... i love it...
Good horror doesn't have to be something scary.
you can be horrified that a man could fit three tennis balls in his mouth... i would be horrified at that!
There is a movie called The Cube. It's a very good film and if you haven't seen it, I suggest it to you now.
Basically 5 or 6 people are stuck in a giant cube made of smaller cubes, some are empty. some have traps.
anyway, one of the rooms (when a sound is made) huge spiked fill the room skewering whatever is in it.
The scene that follows is long. it involves them swinging from the hole at the rop of the cube, down to a hole on the left wall. Each of them climbing down in turn.
I was on the edge of my seat for the entire 5 minute scene.
This is the kind of horror that doesn't have to be all blood and guts and OMGTHERE'SSOMECRAZYMUTATEDPSYCHOWITHCHAINSAWSFORARMSAFTERMEAAARGH
I'm writing a sort of horror at the moment, well it's on pause, but i plan to start it up again. Hopefully I plan to turn it into that sort of edge of seat horror.
Another very good point is that horrors can train your mind. The more you scare yourself the more you work up an immunity to it. and real life occurances may not scare you and help you to keep your cool.
I have to agree with bloodreaper. I also feel that horro allows us to get ready for the real horror of the world we live in.
I agree with you Bloodreeper, and Vincent. Horror doesen't have to have many special effects. I specially like psichological horror movies. And yes Gorey, The Cube is an excellent movie, although it has some predicteble moral implications. I also recommend The Nameless ones ( Los sin Nombre) not one special effect, and it was the scariest thing...I love the art of horror. Is an excellent way of give you an adrenaline rush, and yes, you do exorcise fears when you watch them, atleast for me. But it's not just a way to exorcise fear, is a way to confront it.
I loved "the cube" that was good horror. personally, I like "Saw" because it seemed like the scenario played out could actually happen and to have someone harm themself in that way was totally freaky for me. I also liked it because there was no typical "the bad guy gets killed, comes back for one last scare and then dies again. this was what horror means to me.
mistertricky... i think.... maybe... you might've just ruined the film for people if they read that.
I used to work in a cinema and walked in on the end of the film... effectively ruining it...
and my girlfriend once had the twist of the sixth sense revealed to her... she watched it and hated it because she knew what was going on...
not nice when films get ruined... that's why my reviews of films are spoiler free.
Yeah, I hate the Sixth Sence!
Has anyone every read "The Red Room" By Edgar Allen Poe?
Its only short, and I can tell you now THAT is horror. ANnyone who has read it knows why.
Yeah a horror film doesn't necessary need to be brutal.Sometimes I find brutal very annoying and I either end up going to the bathroom or yawn.
I like horror when there's a lot of suspense and psychology, with some blood and scared people to laugh at,especially those ones that are watching the movie with me>:D
Once I was in a cinema watching a lousy ''horror'' movie and a girl in the cinema, started to scream,...wow that was the best part of the movie cause I woke up!
The more that is left to te imagination, the mroe scary it is!
thats what I am bearing in mind for my film that Im writing.
I was writing a horror film in the past, but lost everything, maybe it's time to write again and maybe in vain lol.
To be honest I'm not one for horror films... books I can stand... but not films.... not unless there's some really deep thought behind it... or I have someone decent sitting near me... otherwise I have to keep repeating to myself... it's ok.... it's just a movie... you'll come out of there alive... but yes any type of movie is quite an art.... and a science to me, cause you really have to know how to manipulate the mind to be able to reach the core of any person~!
Thats why I am taking so long over writing my film. I want it to be like a cut on the roof of your mouth.
I'll be waiting... but keep me informed... I'll give you my feed back!
Personally I love horror films. Lately though they seem more funny than scary. Every one is the same. So predictible....
But if the film makers do even just a little research I find it more enjoyable. As some films do have truth to them.
