How come when you do any sort of image search relating to Gothic or Vampires, the majority of the returns are images or artwork of women?

Now I've certainly got nothing against women, and I love those images of all the hot gothic/vamp gals, but most of the images and graphics of men are all of the same few male TV and movie stars, very little original stuff compared to the ladies' offerings.

Anyway, is it that there are just more women vampires than men?

I highly doubt that. I'm sure there are plenty of men here.

Most probably because female pictures are more attractive. I see this in publicity, females on flyers and on the tv sell more. Even though in this case it's not business, it seems is the same. Once there was a thread entitled: why women are rated higher than men? Someone said; "men like women, women like women."

I was referring to image and graphics search results, rather than VR...

I think deathnitegirl has well addressed this cultural phenomenon quite well: women are far more appealing graphically than men...to both genders, in fact. Thus, if you limit your search only to online graphics, you're going to find more women than men. This, however, does not at all mean there are more actual female vampires than male, of course.

In fact, in the earliest Slavic accounts, all vampires were male. Only in Westernized tales and later fictions do we find female vampires.

(There's a very good reason why all actual Slavic Vampires in the historical accounts were male and not female...but that goes to the very heart of what the historical Vampire truly was and would venture into an entirely different topic.)

Ok, I guess I understand why the female appears more often in the various media in modern Western culture.

But there was such a preponderance of women when I searched images or graphics relating to Gothic or Vampire, that I was wondering about whether that actually translated to more women than men in the so-called Goth and Vampire subcultures.

And it does seem to me that there are more women on VR than men, but I haven't done any actual count, it's just an impression...

I understand UpirLikhyj's historical point about vampires and men, and that indeed is a whole different angle to the discussion, as he points out...

In my country the Gothic sub culture is more common with women rather with men too. It can also be that women are greater in number in many places, maybe part of it is because usually women are greater in population in many places. Could be that women are more into the gothic and vampire sub culture because it's easier for women to express themselves.

Example, in my country there are men who like gothic but because of society they feel uncomfortable to wear make-up and gothic clothing, while for women it's more kind of acceptable.

However women always attract attention more. A couple enters an event, the woman is in a dress, the man is in a suit. Who do you think people look at more? The woman. When there's a wedding and the bride and groom enter the church/reception, who do you think is the centre of attention? The woman.

As for gothic art, if I have to draw an image I myself would imagine a female with black clothing and wings, even though I prefer looking at men with eye liner. Part of it could be feelings. I notice that women tend to write more journals, facebook statuses and express themselves with pictures. It's more common for women to post a picture to express a heartache and sadness while men are more reserved, big part of it is in the gender upbringing.

How many men you see crying or say they cried? It's more socially accepted that women cry, so might be a reason to see more female gothic pictures. Even vampire pictures because since in modern culture they represent seduction and the female body is seem more seductive than the male body.

deathnitegrl makes some darn good points!

It is easier for women to express themselves in divers ways, even outside the cultural box.

Men who express themselves outside the accepted norms are looked at as suspect in our culture. We are expected to be drab, strong, and stoic, I guess...

If I wore eye liner around here, I'd probably get beaten up. My long hair and fingernails already attract funny stares. It's a shame.

Perhaps all of the independent women disposed of most of the men?
