To each couple/parent their own. I would also add that there are some cultures that simply preserve some of the placenta without the intent of eating it. As a sort of talisman, for the siblings of the new child.or for the child as a keepsake when they are older.
There are test that are often performed on the Placenta if a child has a history.
I have to agree that it might have a better use in research and perhaps getting certain substances from it. I suspect it would be a lot like eating tripe and things like that. Since I wasn't raised to eat things raw I would have to cook it or dry it out and turn it in to some sort of powder and put that into things...something like that. I personally would not consider it cannibalism since it is expelled anyway.
When I was younger I did think that consuming placenta was an act of cannibalism. Perhaps this argument is still valid these days. It is afterall a product created by the body. Now that I'm older I my beliefs have been altered slightly. Jaded, maybe.
In some cultures, using placenta in beauty remedies/products is a norm. This, if consumed, would probably fall under the Health or Delicacy categories.
Not all people would consume something just because it is filled witg nutrients. Placenta contains fresh cells. It could be a superstition/blind belief that consuming this would retain or give fresh reinventing cells. Scientifically proven? I dont think so.
I meant to type 'fresh rejuvenating cells' and not 'reinventing cells'. Damn smart phones.
