I was asked a few days ago...what I personally thought a vampire was....
this thread has been done before...but not for a while....and not in my wording...
I feel the dictionary term of VAMPIRE is sorely lacking and limited in focus...
to me vampirism is a state in which a creature acts in a parasitic nature upon it's fellow kind, more to the point...as in an energy exchange
even with sanguinary vamps..there is an energy exchange from the life energy within the blood....I won't use the term pranic energy here as that denotes only on set of beliefs on the matter...
not all psy vamps I have met can hand their energy out....it can be taken...but not all can just let it go
but all seem to be able to leech energy..
making it a vampirically parasitic act
this is what I feel a vamp is....
I also feel that in some cases leeching such energy may assist in rapid healing or life extension..but only in very minor ways...
but as to other abilities....many with psy abilities have "powers" also but are not parasitic....so I don't attribute the powers to vampires....simply to psychics..
so what are your thoughts on this?

I kind of feel a very basic definition for it- a vampire being one who feeds on another's weakness. Not always weakness- but energy and blood are what keep us thriving... that is the very spirit and soul of what we are- so either or, energy/blood- a weakness to be fed on~ without them running at full force- we are drained.

I have never liked the word vampire...It holds way to many misconcived meanings and sigmas...Especially now in this climate of pop culture, Vampire has become a commercialized term of a creature of fictional glory...There are so many different types of beings that can loosely be collected under the term, it leads many to the wrong opinions about most...As One evolves, the parasitic side falls away, and the more positive abilties come into play...

Bonn Scott was the creature; your typical vampire has the pretensions of a rockstar.

You drank all your booze and half of mine,
I'm bleary eyed and you're waiting for the sunshine,
(to come and kill me)
[...]
I'm dead drunk and heave'n hanging upside down,
And you're getting up and leaving, you think I'm gonna drown.

I myself am psychic, I dont practice vampirism in a psychic manner. I draw my energy from the sun, the earth and my surroundings.. Trees, plants. I also release the energy to be recycled into the air, water, earth through grounding, I have fallen prey to psychic vampires when i was learning my abilities, and it is not a pleasant experience, you feel drained, you cant wake up, and at my level of abilities, i would dream of the person who was attacking me. When i finally learned how to block this psy-vampire is when i met him in person. Since then i have learned to shield against such things. The only vampiric act i feel i enjoy is eating raw meat from time to time while cooking. I get a craving to eat any raw meat im working with.

If I post, "I agree too," do I get dropped kick to the other side of the room?

Seriously, nothing has been fully stated to agree on anything yet.

I have found two types of vamps in todays world. One who practices vampirism consciously and one who does vampirism unconsciously. As for the extra powers that show up in vampires - we all have them.

as to aridai's post...
I too leech from nature...generally avoiding the feed from other people routine...
but i still consider this as somewhat parasitic....
remember..a parasite is not necessarily a bad thing.....without internal parasites...we could not survive....
it simply is a reference to the act of taking something you need from a host...in this particular case the host happens to be all of nature.....
and please people....no more "I agree" posts....
add to the conversation in a positive way

well the shape changing thing is more modern to the mythologies around vampires...played up largely by hollywood....I think it stems from the lycanthropy myths as a crossing point of the terrible fears people experienced about demons, devils, and other such superstitions.

I agree that it would be known to be parasitic in nature only. Those who drink blood ritualistically from human beings to sap them of energy, or to even just psychically tear energy from them, I believe that to be true vampirism.

Well Daermon, you composed your thought on the subject too well. I was interested in what your defintion was, for I knew it would be somewhere between my left version and Hollywoods right, but you broke it down so well, all the different types of energies that can be sucked out of human husk, and even with Aridai's post it seems you too have found ways of sucking life out of inanimate and animate objects as well not human. This is why everyone agrees, there is nothing left to suck or feed on, all the energies have been drained.

Bonn Scott, Miz, as you know did pull a Bonham and died of the drink.

But, a part from your definiton, as I can see it has come to draining solely, I will tell you I am a vampire too, and I have drained from you the answer I wanted to hear, only so I could put forth something new. I don't just drain.

As it was stated some Psy vampires can trake or give, I guess I am one of the givers, but in order to give first I have to drain, as I have drained you mind on this one, I hope you don't mind, I am just telling you my modus operandi in hopes you will let me feed from your magnificent mind once again. Happy Fathers Day peeps.

well i simply added the way I see it.... the act of taking is parasitic in nature.....but the act of giving energy..although technically the same power only worked in reverse fasion.....is not parasitic...but again I don't see a negative connotation to the use of the term parasite,
all living things are in some way parasitic after all, plants feed off the co2, animals feed off the plants, larger animals feed off smaller animals, and so on...it is simply natures cycle to be parasitic, all a vamp is doing is using this mentality more consciously than instinctually...
and if what one wishes to feed from me is ideas, then all the power to you...ideas are the fuel for creativity after all

well you are a welcome host after all, yes, I had a friend down in Kew West I used to send him typed 40 page letters about NYC nightlife, and this one guy I met on a trip down there, a homeless teenager, who had a head the size of a really large melon, he intercepted these letters and was fascinated, he eventually started writing me, sleeping on the cement of a parking lot, with a wool hat to hide his huge head in the summer, and he was at the point in his life where he was so in touch with nature and all things living, that he wasn't going to eat plant or animal matter. I asked him, so what do you eat?

He was like: I dunno, I haven't eaten anyting in a week, I still haven't figured that out yet.

Yeah, we must kill in order to live, we must even genetically engineer fish and then dump them into false lake farms so we have more stuff to stuff our stuffed faces with when there isn't enough fish in the wild, cattle, sheep, everything, even the loads and loads of corn fields, everyting is to be ingested, man is perhaps the greatest parasite of them all. Vampires I guess have got it isolated to just one form of energy they ingest, and maybe that is more advances. I just look as Vampires as being a more advanced form of man, judge by vampire action, some of us all we need is blood, but Aridai man, I think I failed to mention, even beef, not only pork has parasitres in it like triconosis, in fact I think the beef parasites in uncooked meat attach to the heart, so, put alot of salt on the raw meat and let it cure before you put it to your lips.

Yes I think that the parasitic idea is a very valid part of the total meaning of the word but I think there's still more to it especially in our modern era...There are so many variations now-a-days. It is indeed something we all should try to figure out as VampyreHeart said...

well to me any other meanings are simply window dressing....
as to the social aspect....that has to do with people...not what you are, the style of dress....there isn't one, the mentality, again..that is the people, not the creature, and like I said earlier....many people have psychic abilities who do not feed in a sanguinary or energy exchange manner....we have just found a sleightly faster way to relpenish our reserves is all....
tho as to no longer needing ANY sustenance other than blood or energy....that I find a bit hard to buy..not impossible, just very very improbable.

Daermon ,yes animals take and the food chain goes on but there is an exchange given..The plant takes co2 and gives back oxygen, the animal that eat plants are spreading the seeds of a plant making sure of its continuence, so on and so one up the chain..Parasites take and never give back from my understanding of the definition

2 : the intimate living together of two dissimilar organisms in a mutually beneficial relationship; especially : MUTUALISM
3 : a cooperative relationship (as between two persons or groups)

true a parasite does tend to give nothing back
most of those who claim to be vamps of one form or anohter...also give nothing back....at least not in the sense of energy taken
when i sit in a crowded room...feeding off the ambient energy of those around me...what am i giving back....I am adding to the conversation perhaps...but this I could do wothout feeding....in the sense of exchange of energy vampirism is a parasitic act....not a symbiotic one

One may also take into consideration of vampirism of a bad relationships. For example: the abusive husband that sucks his wife dry on a daily basis. Psyvamps can be found everywhere, even if they do not call themselves as such.

host to me sounds like a willing recipient.Maybe I am wrong, but if the host enjoys being sucked on parasitically, and does nothing else for them, still there is joy in the being sucked dry isn't there? So there is some symbiosis of sorts even if Webster would not agree by defintion.

I also don't agree that a host is always a willing recipient. Sometime the power held over one is so strong, they cannot do anything to stop it. It is a different story if (they) enjoy getting the energy drained from them. But there are so many forms of draining energy from another....

Enigma - I'm curious what those 'positive' aspects of being a psy-vamp or energy vampire are? You're saying that there is an overall good that can come to a society from not only accepting but welcoming an energy vampire?

I don't much worry about whether or not society accepts a person but I have never really heard someone claim that vampirism was anything more than feeding (in one form or another) and that it did in fact give in to a primarily parasitic nature (even with a willing donor).

and others? not so much ;)

Daermon, you mention the parasites in humans or other creatures that serve a purpose (like the parasites in a termite that allow for the digestion of wood) but that's really more symbiotic and I haven't heard anything about the positive aspects of vampirism...the good that comes of having them around. I'm not trying to start a 'hunters' forum out of this but I think that if one is acting as a parasite, acknowledge it and be done with it...we shouldn't try to allude to some rightousness or benefit that isn't there.

Now I could be wrong and all it would take is someone to point out what positive value the vampire has to give to society...what benefit they offer.

Anyone?

oh for myself..I do simply think we are acting parasitic......the possible good comes not from being a vamp......but from the individual....
the taking of energy is simply parasitic, as what is being given back, conmversation, companionship, etc... could be given even if you don't take energy....therefore it's not related to the energy theft

I met a girl who said she just wanted to fall in love for the power of the heartbreak.

She was a willing masochistic host.

If you guys don't like parasite, or host, then I would suggest predator and prey.

The prey gets to see the inner life of the powerful vampire, and eventually gains close to, as much as, or even more power than the person that truned them.

The power of heartbreak is something that could kill you, or reincarnate you. The vampire relationship/contract has its just rewards.

I beleive that a 'vampyre' feeds off of another objects energy, filling a void within an area of themselves.
Since 'all' is made up of energy,
anything can "feed" on the universal enegy for their need.
Those of us who know this and do this are at the top of the game.
Realise that those who dominate the world do so because they can feed off of others fear, need and wants.

What is vampire. I will give you one to think on. A vampire is an autistic mental case. And I will tell you why. But first, because I am a thesaurus warrior, I will add a new word word intentionality. Here is a definition of intentionality (taken from The Human Story, by Robin Dunbar).

At this point, I need to introduce a technical term. Some decades ago, philosophers interested in the nature of minds coined the term ‘intentionality’ to refer to the kinds of mental states that we have when we are conscious of holding some kind of belief, desire or intention. The term refers collectively to mind states like knowing, believing, thinking, wanting, desiring, hoping, intending, etc. It refers to the state of being aware of the contents of your own mind.

Intentionality can be conceived of as a hierarchical organized series of belief states.

  • In the scheme of things computers are zero-order intentional entities: they are not aware of the contents of their ‘minds.’ Some living organisms such as bacteria (and perhaps some insects) may also be zero-order intentional beings.
  • Most organisms that have brains of some kind are probably aware of the contents of their minds: they ‘know’ or ‘believe’ that there is a predator under the bush over there. Such organisms are said to possess first-order intentionality.
  • Having a belief about someone else's beliefs (or intentions) constitutes second order intentionality. We humans clearly go beyond this level: Peter wants Jane to suppose that Sally thinks that her ball is under the cushion. Sally is in first-order intentionality, Jane in second, and Peter in third.

There seems to be an upper limit on how many levels of intentionality a human can do. Conventional wisdom suggests that adult humans have an upper limit on the levels of intentionality that they can cope with of about five or six orders. (Shakespeare's Othello is written in sixth order intentionality.)

So what you say? Well I think your average Goth or Vampire cannot cope with second order intentionality. Your vampire is at first-order intentionality. They are at the level of animals and not humans. The “I hate liars, I hate fakes, I hate chavs,” that I read of all the time in these profiles is because your average goth is Autistic. They do not understand why or how people tick, and invariably offend or alienate friends.

I think the energy sucking has destroyed the intuitive ability, that is the hallmark of a human. That vampires are incapable of sympathy, or any other traits of humanity.

well I like going to the next level of my own state of mind. Pushing the envelope of understanding is the only way to understand it all. But will I be like Jim Carey in Batman forever as his mind explodes from the device he creates?

The thing that fascinates me now is the predictability of unpredictibility.

Wew go through stages unaware what is around the next curve, and then once we learn the lesson we see, that the whole path has been laid out before us to become a vampire

the old vampires have shown the way

and we follow crumbs

to get into a forest we cannot escape from

when we are in the forest we see the backwards look at the unpredicted path of ours, that it was entirely predictable to become the creature that we are, because it is human nature to take the logical steps to become a vamp.

hmm unable to understand others and emotion miz?
well considering the viciousness you often present...this would also categorize you yourself....
I think you are generalizing far too much on one stereotype....
what you are talking about is not a vamp, or even a goth problem....but a human problem....
I have seen sites with all manner of people, not vamp or goth...and the profiles on those sites are often just as poorly thought out and as much a waste of the time it took to load them....
part of your problem....ius you think yourself above this ....but in reality..you are simply just anpother part of it...as we all are

Miz - pushing buttons...getting someone's goat...riling the citizens up :)

Now I wouldn't put most goths in the vampire category but even if I was to put your aforementioned example of those profiles as the definition of vampire...they at least experience the second level order of intentionality:

"Sage" (fictitious name to protect the sad) hopes Lestat will want to swoop down and make him/her a real vampire before they kill themselves.

Finally though on a serious note (or as close as I get)...Daermon makes the point stick with the examples of poorly written tripe on any internet community. That lack of empathy or depth could never make a vampire...Otherwise, MySpace would be the biggest congregation of vampires in the known universe.

Felix- I dont know if you're still looking for a positive case of this "vampirism" but I can tell you in my line of business there is a sort of taking on my part. I am a deep tissue therapudic massage therapist. Through most of my sessions my client will have what is called an emotional release. If you want more info on that I will be happy to provide....its all tied with muscle knots and chemical holding patterns...I have a choice to take their pain and ground it or let them hold it in. Over the last couple of months however I realized I cant ground worth a damn and instead "feed" off their pain for lack of a better phrase. I give nothing back that I am aware of....yet they leave my office in peace and relaxation. I assume this is from being free of such carried burdens.
Dont know if this is what you were looking for, but it seems a positive reaction to me.

i used to hear my teacher define a vampire as someone who bases their whole life on taking from another life essence...i guess in a way that may be true because in a sense we do take the blood from other people and blood is a life essence but at the same time their are other vampires that in her words "drink the non physical aura of a person" so it just proves that over the years people have came up with their own translation and definition of the word vampire...so as i see it the only true way to define vampire is to see what it means to you and go from there...

personaly i think vampires are biological being cursed and lonely soul.
they inspire fear because of our folk stories.

the need for blood, remain the principle source of energy,
even if the first vampire came to a novgoradian prince, oleg it's name, vampire has evolved during centuries.

from were i stand and look out apon the COSMOS as a whole. it is the very nature of all things (from the small energy to the large universe), to feed of each other.

how much of this nature and behavour one observes or is whilling to see, is a peer and individual upbringing.

from a scientific piont of view the energy at the end of the microscope, consumes each other till the piont of mass formation.

and then again with mass formation the cycle continues somewhat.

all creatures consume for suvival, plants consume and a bacteria along with a micro virus all consume.

only the wise see that nature from begining till end.

as to what is a vampire, clearly the story tellers have now got a hold on the preprogramed invision all/most humans have in this case.

if your are to refure to those of the Gathering (Vampyers) then yes they are much difrent.
the main part being, they hold great strength and reciliance in not just the consume'n of a feed, they hold a ruther stounch spiritual value to the task of the feed, and to the COSMOS as a hole.
so to set the vision corect it is humans that are the more animalistic of the too.

cheers

p.s: -
half of all medication for heart conditions and hemiphilia are made from the centre fuision of the proteins out of dead humams blood.......you bloody canibals(consume'n dead peoples substance is consumeing no matter how many times it's been cleand ect)

Lilith the Red - So what you're saying is that when you 'feed', you can differentiate between good and bad energy in a host and only drain the bad. That would be a valid form of symbiosis and would in many ways be a positive reaction to a feeding. However, the moment that you find out you're taking more than the negative energy...well then we must re-evaluate at that point. Masochism or self sacrifice even for pleasure is not something I think can qualify as symbiotic since the end result would still be 'harmful' or at least cumulatively negative.

Miz - Glad I could brighten that angry little heart. Hehe

PheaR - I don't doubt that a human is "base, common and popular."*
We're a muddy species that has the nerve to make fun of monkeys for throwing feces and then write a political blog (which is to say...the same thing). But to claim that a vampire is in anyway bound to a higher code than a human is to deny that whatever spiritual being you are, you are also human. Vampires outside of fiction are just as much a slave to their desires, hungers and needs as any other human. You could no sooner go without food as the next upright walking ape and money is likely not far behind on a list of priorities. So I don't feel that one can claim to 'look down upon' mankind until you have completely stepped out of mankind's shoes.

*Pistol - King Henry V

oh yeah, I fed on her drops of soul and painted a vivid protrait of her in the thousand page book on her, shoot, I was an addict to her, and she would give me less and less and I would kill to get more. I needed more woman in my life and I wasn't satisfied. She was the vampire that let me feed on her.

felix- it's not really me who controls it....they "throw off" the negativity. the only time I've ever gone in and taken was to help a friend...and it was just recently, with their permission. I'm also taking a workshop on energy and how to convert that negativity so that I may return it in a positive state. I'm still learning and have a long way to go. I had my energy instructor sit in on my last client monday....and was told afterward I did no harm to the subject but produced interesting results. I continue the workshop this weekend and cant wait to learn more

Red - so if your actually transferring energy around and manipulating it...turning bad into good energy and so forth...are you really feeding on it? It sounds like what you're doing is energy healing not energy vampirism.

a vampire who funnels pain for use as cement to house blocks of security may not enjoy pain after all, it may be aparant that they are masochists by "living" off negative attention, but it is either the good soul give up or evil wins. If there was no evil in life, I would have killed myself long ago. Evil gives me purpose. Focus. Rectifying things makes good people useful. I am happy the world is soooo messed

In all great honesty my honest opinion is it has to do with ones aura....The so called "Powers" that a vamp posses can be brought out by having a strong aura... Some people can make someone want them and kind of lure those people to them with it... Also if you belive in something strongly enough it will happen.. I know I've done it plenty of times...But that is only what I think others may have a different opinion.

if you throw a bread crumb at a pigeon while it is walking in a figure 8, it will religiously walk in figure 8's everytime the guys in lab coats come by because they want bread crumbs.

Birds as dumb as they are are supertitious

humans are the same, we are not different at all, there are rules that govern us. When a woman says I love you, you tend to love her more. Life is entirely predictable, because human nature can be defined. We are more complex than a pigeon, but still there are minds out there that can encompass all the different behavioral types.

but behaviors are also the same even if they are different, there is an augmentation of behavior because of their nurture. It is the nurture that makes us change our behavior, but it is only a twisting effect that perverts our behavioral expression, and where we branch out from it is all the same womb.

I do agree with imagesinwords. I think that a vampire is some who feeds off of other people not just for food or energy but like she said they also feed on weakness. I do have my own opinions on this matter but that is too long to type. But to sum it up mainly what she said is summed up into what I think.

Not all vampires are fallen angels. Some vampires are born vampires and others are made from angel stock. The angels which give up their life for understanding shed their wings to cause mass change are the “made” ones. They do this because there is something wrong with life, and they sacrifice existence to create an immortality in underground literature. This is the only immortality I know of. Vampires have great power of longevity of thought because they gave up other powers like reproduction, holding a job during the day, and health to some extent for new power. They sell their soul, and lose the body to fill the mind. This is of course evil. This unnatural desire to know everything, is why Vampires have a great stigma to them. All major vampire characters the counts and such are learned scholarly men, who have chosen to make them selves immortal through this dark magic, and the darkness of it is only dark because it is not understood. The driving force of vampires, that which makes them tick, is the love of a lifetime aspect to the unrequited state of loving they have endured. This is what makes Vampires seductive, the high priority on Gothic epic romance. The only reason why Vampires are so keen on Romeo and Juliet plots is because life has denied them Love. Love is denied because there is a game played in life to destroy these Count angels. There are a variety of reasons why there is a conspiracy against true love for angels, and here is a quick synopsis of Vampariah’s misfortune.

All life is an act, for all the world’s a staging, it is either change who we are in the core or perish. Later life is compromise, which is a death to our selves the way we knew it. We change into supernatural creatures because of the perversion of reality. Vampires do then exist only in a metaphysical sense because they are “not of the body” any more, and do not exist at all, in terms of human comprehension of normal life. It is life non the less, this compromise, and that is why we are thought of as undead. In transcending life we can think like vampires if we act like them long enough for even though we are not really vampires, in essence, what we act like is what we eventually become. Doing something long enough, behaving in certain ways, removes us from the old life, and we have another life from that, of sorts. The actor gets lost in his role and loses their identity. Vampires because we have died (from our former selves) already, and cannot bring new life into this world (procreativity exchanged for creativity of thought), do not ever again stand in judgment, a different life commences then, where we can stand upon our tombstone and fly with the concept of reevaluation, the highest form of thought on this planet, that I at this moment now do know of. Reevaluation is such a quantum leap of flight from judgment that others believe there is lack of judgment in vampire philosophy and of course resist the power of knowledge. Perhaps beyond reevaluation is a higher form of human thought where a person can convince another of vampire philosophy, but personally I think this is impossible. If there is such a level of human/vampire thought that could perform this difficult operation, I think at least the mechanism for dispensing knowledge would be the scientific ways of proving things. The other end of the results of the scientific process, the lack of acceptance of wisdom from the ones who have experienced things, is the part that makes the whole trip sometimes useless, even with science governing the process.

I have been asked again and again to prove what I allude to in the main forum, but I never do because the order of knowledge is that its creative powers are so incredible that they become destructive in the end. I understand that. I understand why they have to kill threads every time I mention certain themes. There are too many eyes on the forum and not enough eyes in the paper topics, but since the truth must be verified, and truth must be shared sparingly, I will hide the truth in there where only the astute Count and Countess will look, all the rest can go to rot because they do not take life and death seriously and do not fulfill their obligation to be commensurate with the purpose of vampirism; reprogramming brainwashed human minds. Vampires take what they have in their heart for the woman that never appears, to try to save the world with that same high romanticism, to find in the end that Vampires in general are hunted to extinction because of the destructivity of the knowledge of procreation. After both these first two parts of the love for a woman and the love for knowledge have been borne fruit, then the third part of the vampire legacy occurs. The third part is that since one has lost love due to the conspiracy against true love, and the rest of their natural life they try to find out why life or love was denied them, they die and then the living cannot understand them, so all there is left is to create a new bloodline and teach your blood all you know, because no one is going to believe you even if you have the gift of communicative powers, the wisdom, the drive and the rules of science to guide the way, unless they come from you and are of your family. This is why blood is so important to vampires. There is truth in my blood. Do you want a taste?

ok, i am new to all this and am learning more about vampires and the different types of vampires as i go. But for the moment i wouold say that i believe that vampirism is a state of being certainly, and also that you can make of it whatever you will. It all depends on your perception of vampires and vampirism as a life. I personally feel this is a good thing. I also now, find the origional steriotypical vampire existence hard to swallow.

One more thing :

I was doing a little extra reading online about this subject and came across this tidbit :

Excerpted from an article by Rob Brautigam....

"Strange as it may seem to some, the fictional vampire has made its way back into reality. Recently we have witnessed the birth of another kind of vampire. Inspired by the works of Anne Rice and others, a number of people have started to identify themselves with the vampire to such an extent that some of them have actually started behaving like vampires. They have been labelled "pseudo-vampires" and "vampiroids" by the outside world. It doesn't seem to bother them, for they consider themselves to be true vampires. And - since there are so many different things that are all called "vampire" - why shouldn't they? "

"Vampiroids" ??? .....never heard that term before !

No. What you are preaching is a terrible loss of nerve, a retreat from knowledge. No reevaluation, you must go foward.

We are all afraid—for our confidence, for the future for the world. That is the nature of human imagination. Yet every man, every civilization, has gone foward because of its engagement with what it has set itself to do. The personal commitment of a man to his skill, the intellectual and emotional commitment working together as one.

I thought I understood, but this philosophy is pessimistic.

Daermon, I answered your question of what is my education, I will interdepartent memo, put it in the sandbox, and put it in my portfolio start up entry. I am taking out my abusive email posts to blocked people. I don't want to be mean. You right I don't want to dump on your thread, but, that was an edited version of the Vampariah Act II which I am still working on of which I only included the parts that were related to the nature of the creature. Sorry if you took it as an offence. I only intended to bring honor and merit to your thread, not that your work need any legitimization, but, thank you for being so robust in your critique of just about everything that I do for, the thing that I wrote for you last night, answering you just what is my education, took 4 and 1/2 hours and it is one of the finest things I ever wrote. I came to the conclusion that education has absolutely nothing to do with school.

I see it as a personal journey, everyones being different. Letting it never be fully described.

You can describe all the traits, but not the whole.

As it was said "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts."

As in its not the vampiric traits that make us, its us mixed with them. We each have different ones, which wouldn't be the same in everyone.

As an old fashioned hemophage, I've always understood a "vampire" to be a blood drinker, pure and simple. Whether we are predatory, parasitic or symbiotic depends on whether we simply take blood without any concern for our victim, or whether we offer anything in return -- pleasure, protection, support are some of the more obvious aspects of such a return.

But even parasites take part in a greater symbiosis, playing their part in the balance of nature. Of course, I would prefer to have a symbiotic relationship with willing donors who receive pleasure and my protection. That has not always been feasible and predation is sometimes necessary.

Taking slowly, repeatedly, in a parasitic fashion is dangerous, leaving one open to exposure and destruction -- unless (1) you have your prey securely bound in a prison where he or she can be enjoyed as long as you with to sustain the poor fool, or (2) you can have the victim so discredited that his or her stories of vampiric attacks will be viewed as a form of insanity. That's easily achieved these days. Of course, it's also extremely cruel and finding someone who is both deserving and vulnerable is not necessarily easy either. The quick kill is a more utilitarian and less amusing way to dispose of someone, but it's much simpler and safer.

This has been a most intriguing, interesting and entertaining thread! To start off with, Images and Daermon have summed it up perfectly for me and as to my thoughts and feelings.

I feel vampires are both parasitic and symbiotic....depends if one just takes and if one takes and also gives back energy. I have only taken at times, and have freely given to aid others. Parasitic is not a negative term when used in this case, just a term to use.

Webster's New International Dictionary defines a vampire as

"A reanimated corpse that is believed to rise from the grave at night to suck the blood of sleeping people.
A person, such as an extortionist, who preys upon others.
A person who preys on the opposite sex."

Ok first off, I don't think that even fictional vampires have stuck to the "opposite sex rule...food is food...do we distinguish between a male and female cow when choosing a cheeseburger? No...*giggle*
Secondly, the victims are often not sleeping, as for shock factor seeing our demise (in fiction that is) creates the best imagery.

Now for my own personal opinion on that matter...a vampire is simply a stigma. A label designed to name a group of people that practice unusual methods of bonding, living, feeding, and loving.
In one way or another, we all "take" something from other people, thereby in a way, we are "feeding" off of them.
The term vampire has been given such a negative connotation that there very word can either commense a person to eye rolling, or provoke fear in the ignorant.
I prefer to think of vampires as mythical creatures that are other worldly, sensual, lovely, and eternal...

Dark Greeting's vampierism can be parisitic, but like stated earlierl all parasites arn't a bad thing.I am Psi./Sang. But I give energy or blood in return. I don't drain anyone or thing,I also take energy from my surrounding's and I feel Vamps are misunderstood thank's to Hollywood.I know some real vamp's who walk in the sun the one's I know just laugh at that one.I don't believe they will burst into flame in the sun. Most just prefer not to be in it.
Dark Blessing's,

post length I say good soldiers...hehe one paragraph good...small books..not so good.
there is reasoning for this....makes the whole site lag down when threads are too long....thats why the 250 post closure barrier was put in....
thats my only complaint in this area...
ever notice how aftre movies about a topic the lingo changes?
not meaning to pick on anyone....
but lycan, hemophage, are terms that are largely movie produced....not used in common till after such movies...but then in normal use.....just a note.....
and Miz: you still continue to surprise me....
for weeks an insufferable jerk...then out of the blue a few bright gems of good reasoning...lol

Vladjack made one of the best structured posts of a new snow ball of info, man he hit me in the eye, shoot. I concur only to say, I think there are two types of vampires, the born and the made, and I know I said elsewhere the born ones are the females, it is the males who try to decipher why life is the way it is by destroying themselves. Women are far too smart to ever be a fool like me. But the power of fooism is that losing energy, or even dying briong greater power and it is the man that risks the most who gains the most out of his husk in the end, which we will all leave anyways. Therefore even though women or made female vampires are never fools, the male vampires fall into hell but come out of hell with the knowledge of the devil. YOu all agree the devil is a male and he is very powerful, although some would say the devil is a woman in a blue dress.

Do we have any vampires that offer protection for their donors? That's the closest I have heard in ways that a parasite can work towards a more symbiotic relationship.

I'm really trying to learn where the belief in vampires as something more moral and righteous came from. Even as a possible older soul or awakened being, the normal act of vampirism (energy, psionic, blood, etc) is normally a predatory and parasitic nature. There is nothing righteous or more civilized about it. Having donors is a bit like raising cattle. You may treat them kindly or even offer protection but mostly, you're just domesticating your food.

My reasons for stressing that fine point is not that I have a problem with vampires or the act of vampirism but simply a desire that people acknowledge their nature and don't hide from it behind some kind of belief in the wisdom or righteousness that supposedly comes with age or dominance. Humans have proven for centuries that age and power do not automatically make a thing morally right or justified.
