The Ultimate Vampire Resource and Directory

I was having a talk with one of my good friends about vampires and why i am so into learning about them and fascinated with them. she asked me a question to which i did not have an answer. "why do vampires have no reflection? they are real, you can see them and touch them, so why?" I have no idea. So I thought I would see what all of you thought. I tried to come up with reasons about light reflecting and refracting but i was fumbling about. so here i am. what do you all think?

Your conversation was based on qualities attributed to fictional literature. Modern, living vampires have reflections.

Let's see, one it's a cheap special effect for tv. Vamps have no soul, so no refection and/or the mirror see the person's true self. But all in all - it's Hollywood.

Indeed, the "no relection" thing is a fictional charactaristic meant to reveal the soulessness of the vampire.

I only have one slight disagreement with Billy's assesment. It's Bram Stokers's idea, not Hollywood's. The Movies and TV just capitalized on it.

i thought about the no soul thing too. thank you for all of ur input, at least now i can tell my friend that i was right adn they do indeed have reflections. :o)

My personal belief goes along the lines of my housemate kcrc. However, I have always thought of the 'no reflection' as a slightly different take. Vampires of hollywood indeed have no soul, but more importantly, the entirety of their existence is in just this dimension. Often, it is speculated that mirrors provide not only a reflection, but a looking glass into an alternate dimension.

Mirrors also by nature, reveal possibilities in this world; in it, we view how we look before leaving for the day. It reveals how others see us. Perhaps this also lends to the possibility that vampires aren't normally 'seen' by others, so therefore, no reflection is necessary.
