After some time reflecting and pondering various things, I have come to realize that I worship the night. I have tried to do some research but have come up dry, so I am wondering if anyone out there knows anything on any religions that specifically worship the night. I would also like your personal thoughts on this.

Try reading Nocturnal Witchcraft, and Gothic Grimmore by Konstantinos. They contain more of the information of which you speak. I hope this helps and may the shadows hide you from those who would do you harm. *Bows*

I have absolutely no idea, but why must you turn the night into a god? Night is amazing and filled with promise, but so is day, a great meal or a work of art. You're certainly free to worship anything you like, a waffle iron if you so choose...but why?

I'm concerned when people believe that they must worship something they like. Why not just enjoy it and make the most of it while you're here?

But If days are like it is now,,, with thunderstorms, then I love it.

I agree that Nocturnal Witchcraft is an excellent read. However I also believe you can be more intuned with the night than the day.

This does not mean you need to *worship* the night, you can just be more comfortable and enjoy your surroundings more at night.

The darkness always has held many mysteries and for those who feel the energy of the night it is a powerful thing.

Absolutely. Most people are asleep so you get no annoying psychic interference for spellwork, and it is much easier to see the stars at night.

I don't think the night is a time to hide....

I think the night has traditionally been the time of one world closing and another opening. All the creatures of the daytime get their much needed rest, rest that scientists have discovered is vital for all things to survive. The creatures of the night awaken and continue the never ending cycle of life throughout the night. It's a glorious and amazing process that is timeless in itself.

There is something entertaining to me about going out to the store late at night. It's like seeing it in another dimension. Everything changes at night, except it's all still there, all the trees are there. Your car is still parked in the same place, but it all has such a different meaning to it.
I think nighttime is alien to us, it probably wasn't always, but we really would get our asses kicked if we were left alone out in the night...We've proven that dozens of times in the past few years.

People need to toughen up! It should not mean certain death when you get lost in the woods! That's disgraceful.

What does that prove?
Simply that most of us aren't meant to be creatures of the night because we can't stay awake? ^.^ I like it.

I like sleeping at night. The night helps guide my dreams and keeps me relaxed.

Well I can stay awake at night if I sleep during the day no problem.

The issue is that I still do like to see other people, if even just to gripe about them.

But, I still prefer the world after sunset.

Hmm. that's fine. There is something energizing about the night.

But I do want people to realize that we weren't actually designed for the nighttime. On our own I mean...
If we were we would be set up completely differently. First starting with our eyes. Our eyes are not designed for us to surivive in the night. Sure we can see and some better than others, but most creatures have a general pattern when it comes to their night time adaptations. That would be awesome if we developed eyes that could see better in the dark. And I wish we were faster....

When a person opens themselves up to share beliefs and seems to be making an honest inquiry into spirituality, I admire that, regardless of whether I agree with it. Given the topics of the threads I have read on this site, I was quite surprised to read the callous responses here.

So you say you "worship" the night, and wonder if anyone feels that pull or if anyone has information. Well the answer is yes, moon worship preceded sun worship in EVERY primitive society.

Here is a website that might help you on your way, good luck with your search.

I didnt mean to be abstructive to the debate. Sorry if you felt that way.

There are some times when you can see the moon in the day, but it really depends on where you live. Perhaps that is a better fit for you spiritually anyhow since it is relatively a given that the moon is the presiding feature of the night.

I would not test that theory......

A good book (especially for women) to read is "In the House of the Moon: Reclaiming the Feminine Spirit of Healing"
It talks all about phases of the moon and I believe even lets you know how to do a moon garden. It's great if you want to learn more about natural ways of taking care of your body depending on the phases of the moon and also goes into finding what element you are and what that means about your life.
It is mostly for women but is not limited to them. This is honestly one of my favorite books of all time.

I found a link to it, if you happen to see it in a book store or library I would definately advise picking it up for a good read if you are interested in an all natural life style or just want to learn some cool stuff and read beautiful stories.

I would like to point out that just because you worship something doesn't mean you deify it. In the sense that I use the word, it simply means to love deeply. I do not view the night as a living entity other than a metaphorical way. I do not truly believe there are any deities, but if they exist they certainly aren't anything like the night or the day.

The reason I am curious about religions that worship the night is because I have heard much of ones that worship the sun, the light, and many other things that involve the day. I noticed that I haven't heard of any that served the night, since I find great joy in it I wondered why.

Morrigon, not trying to be controvesial, you are not entirely correct about us not being designed for the night. We are better suited for the day, but we have certain characteristics that make it so we could survive in the dark. Our eyes dilate so that we can see better and we are built with rather incredible hearing that we instinctively pay more attention to at night. If you ever spend any time out in a wilderness at night you will notice many other things that give us the ability to survive at night.

I find the idea of night worship quite appealing. Not so much because the night needs followers or because it's worship might grant my wishes but because the very act of night worship begins to give an abstract like night a personality. Deification bestows human qualities upon abstract ideas or things and I find it someone intriguing to imagine what kind of god or goddess night would make...whether it be the soft maternal native american night that wraps the world in a dark blanket or a more surreal night based on a loki styled mischief maker and thief.

Placid, you must be joking. Just because our eyes dialate does not mean we are meant for the night. We can get by in it, simply because it cannot be expected that we be inside or sleeping by the time night hits. Nearly every creature has eyes that are designed to adjust to different lighting.

What I'm saying is, take a look at the creatures that are built to surivive in the night and see the differences. Usually the eyes are much bigger in proportion to their head, it's a simple concept. We are not like that, to assume that we can master everything is an arrogent human condition.

On another note, our hearing is quite pathetic really when compared to nearly any other animal. Our hearing allows us to focus on the most minimal things, we get by on the bare minimum. The night time is beautiful, but not built for us. If it were, such things as torches, camp fires, and lights would not have been invented.

I did not say that we are meant for the night, I merely stated that we would not have trouble surviving in it. As for our hearing, sure we can't hear things as far off as most animals, but we can pick out a pin drop in the middle of a concert as long as we haven't subjected our ears to too much excessively loud noise. I am not "arrogant" enough to think that we could master the night, but we could survive comfortably in it.

I like personifying the night too. I often speak of the night as a she. I will make comments from time to time about the night telling me this or that, but I don't mean that it took human form and spoke to me. The night, just like fire, has it's own desires and needs even though it is not a living being.

I think we used to be able to survive in the night just fine. But now, no way. I've seen all the stories, most people get freaked out, get lost, starve, all this nonsense. We're animals, we're not supposed to be stupid.

I'll believe the pin drop thing when I try it.....which will never happen.

One could argue that since we've developed the ability to light up the night, that we are more masters of it than most animals. We've invented infrared, spotlights, flares, motion sensors...The average owl seems lacking in comparison. Our ability to invent tools is an almost inherent trait. It's at the minimum a defining point of humans that separates us from other animals.

I'll agree with you that people do get freaked out and what not, but that is from ignorance and stupidity. It is fun to go to a place and just listen, you'd be amazed at what you can hear, most people don't realize everything that their ears actually pick up because they don't pay enough attention.

Thank you all for taking an interest in this thread.

My point is that compared to the animal kingdom, if we didn't include our ability to invent things or use tools, we'd be just as helpless in the day as we would in the night.

I agree with jole. The night is not godlike. I love the night, not as I love a liveing thing , but for the secrets it holds, the quietness, the creatures that are only seen after sunset. Then afterwards the sun rises like a great ball of fire, igniteing everything in it's path. Then it is time for me to retire.

Lookup the following goddesses:

From the Egyptians: Nepthys. She is the sister of Isis and is the egyptian goddess of night.

Secondly, Nyx of the Greek pantheon. Did you see the Olympics in Greece? That whole thing with the woman walking in the dark with the light in her womb? Well, that was Nyx, the goddess born of chaos who gave birth to the night sky and the stars (including our sun). Their ceremony was on the origin of life on earth. I was stunned to recognize her representation and very happy they chose to honor her that way.

She has always been one of my patron goddesses, in terms of goddessses that I frequently call upon in ritual. She does not disappoint, either.

That's pretty cool about the Olympic games.

I worked graveyard shift for nearly 6 months one year, and by then I had finally gotten my eating cycles normal. I also was able to see better at night for a while, though my eyes in general have gone downhill since then.

In general though, for some reason things don't seem quite normal working the night ALL the time.

Oooh!

the other thing:

If there isn't a religion for the night that suits you, make one up!

Doesn't mean you have to found the 'church of night' or whatever, but you could come up with some tenants.

The nocturnicon by konstantinos has some awesome spells that helps you take in the power of the night into you. I too, look towards the night and study the nocturnal witchcraft and gothic grimoire books. best of luck.

I wouldn't go so far as to say I "worship" the night but i do feel more comfortable there. Guess it comes with the territory or maybe just personal lifestyle but I've always been a night person.

Amen to that! I still prefer winter though. I like the cold, and the nights are longer, so it works out.
