Does anyone know how this happens... What is the symbolism of it?
Is it done through Lucid Dreaming?
I have seen this and it fascinated me.. I know the person does not speak israeli but he was speakin it, as he was deep in Prayer...
So, this has got me interested and fascinated...
Do any of you guys do this when you Pray to your worshipped one?
Yes It is.... When I was in the church about 25 years ago I use to . It was mostly at the end of the service when the alter call was given.. we would go into deep prayer and it was like someone moved right in to your body and was talkin thru you,
Wow, sorry to say it never happened to me but gonna read up on it very interesting...
Yes, Minx I had this happen all the time when I use to attend church, Penecostal/Baptist I would speak in"tongues" as theycall it and even translate yet to be honest I knew I was doing it but it felt like someone or something else had control over me and I was always drained and tired afterwards, yet I felt refreshed if that makes sense.
One time they said I danced and ran all around the church preaching and translating evereything that was being said.
I know it is true because I wwas sitting on the floor of the church when I gained my own sense of self. I was very inlightening yet also very scary that someone or something could take control of me. I was told I was a special one/choosen one and should be very happy about it, well I guess I am a control freak cause I do not go to church any more.
When I am around any religious gatherings and Prayers in a group I feel it coming in and I usually leave. LOL!!! I guess I am a wuzzzzy l yet it is very very different.
From your perspective WHipped, It seems like a possession?
Yup. In the books of Acts it happened frequently. It is an outward manifestation of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit initially. Later it is used to give a word of encouragement, admonish, strengthen you spiritually, intercede on your behalf and others etc.
Read the book of Act and see for yourself. It started in chapter 2.
It isn't JUST in the book of acts tho.. I have been aware of All kinds of religions/beliefs/worshipery doing this...
I didnt feel it to be possession as were to me possion would be an evil or sacry feelin ...when this happens to me its like a warmin and relived feelin....
By Possession I mean by "being possed by something"
I don't mean evil.
Do you know what language you were talking FH?
No not really.Minx but then again its sorta like im under hypnotis...
well you could say that Minx in a sense it was yet in a very good one and I know I was speaking Arabic sooo go figure I mean there were people there that understood me before I translated it, I actually felt.... how do I say, relieved lifted from all my pain and sadness it filled me with so much joy I started telling everyone and stuff LOL!!! yet, it did seem like someone else was controlling mw as you said a kind of Possession, they wanted to get their word/point across/out there ya know? :)
Whipped, you took the words right out of my thoughts... It is a possion but a good feelin kind...
I'm SO intruiged!!
do you know if IT is female.. or Male?? do you feel it Enter you?
im not sure if it male or female but yes it is like a giant wind that blows on you and settles in even if for only a moment,,,,
well I felt this like wrapping around me whether it been wings or arms it enveloped me and just held me tight and when done I always fell to the floor so... yeah, you could say I felt it LOL! very much so, it did not ever make me feel like I was in danger just I am a person who likes to be in control of myself LOL! You know one of those people that will not do Acid or 'shrooms because it makes you haulicinate LOL! I am not happy when I am not in control of myself.
Yet it was very very enlightening and refreshing for my mind and soul and body.
in a way i think it is god tryin to speak thru us......
This is something I can only speak about from the viewpoint of my own experiences at a Spiritualist church.
When I first witnessed this I was very sceptical, and still lean that way today.
It is a 'dying' art in most Spiritualist churches and I think thats a good thing.
As I Spiritualist I like to deal with evidence of survival, so someone speaking in tongues to a congregation who has no knowledge of the language used is pretty much a waste of time as far as I am concerned.
Full trance mediumship, is I guess a form of posession, but one based on trust and mutusl desire to help those who are in need.....this I can understand and know is useful.
in the bible whenever someone spoke in tongues, there was ALWAYS someone there to interperate. never was it just someone babbling
During my teens when I did attend a Christian church a few of the older females during the service at times would speak in tongues. I was told when I asked about this that it was the Holy Spirit speaking though them. I was shown this passage in the bible from Mark 16:17: These signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new languages. It was considered a gift from God. IE: The Holy Spirit is sovereign in the distribution of these gifts. When I did witness this it scared me. It seemed at the time to me more of a display of emotional release. That is how I viewed it then.
I have seen it happen to people it wilds they are on a spiritual high...
The Holy Spirit works in mysterious ways, but if one is helped by such things....so be it.
While I have never experienced it myself, I have seen it many times in the church I used to attend. It seemed to me that it was a real spiritual experience that these people were going through. They were taken over by a spirit of some sort who spoke through them, using them, and then left them feeling better for the experience.
during a long time, i tried to go to different churches and know about different creeds... one day happened to me that i went to one pentecostal church with a friend of mine and at the end of the ser vice, as someone already said, some people was invited to the altar ... and almost all of them started one by one falling in this kind of "possession" or trance of some kind and started speaking in different tongues and crying out loud ...
even my friend started doing it... i sincerely think this is something collective... i'm not saying that people were faking, but i think that one start and the others follow....
Wyldchild**
Not always were there someone to interprete. THe books of Acts has many cases that doesn't say any one interpreted. Additionally, Acts 10:46-47 says that they both spoke in tongues and praised God. So they were not necessarily done at the same time just that both occured. This is turning into a sunday school lesson, so I am done.
i dont pray so ive never expirenced things such as these, sounds interesting....
I was once dragged along to a prayer meet at university... I guess they were trying to recruit me or something... the service was charming until one started talking LIKE DEECE... saying stuff like I@M THE LORD... what a load of crap! Self indulgent balderdash... although I have seen real possession in HK... a taoist priest with no martial arts ability after a short ritual began fighting moves like an expert... he'd allegedly been possessed by the spirit of a dead boxer rebel who was shot in the 1900s... spooky!
Speaking in tongues today especially in some congregations is no more than a form of possession....now think if a church is the house of God whats up with the possession thing...hmmmmm
When the followers of Christ were given the gift of tongues it was the ability to speak in the languages of that period in order to preach the gospel, not some jibberish that no one understands.
I once found myself singing in what seemed to be Gaelic, but since I don't normally speak that language it could just have sounded like it. I was in a semi trance like state at the time...just sort of in my groove. As to where it came from, I think it was just somethig subconscious coming out. But then, I could have been chanelling the Ancestors and not know it.
Every chant and worship is different , There is no one same chant or worship. It all depends on what ur doing the chant for.
i have personally seen this in different religions in mine we use chants for our rites and ritual's, but in Christian religions is sounds like jebirish
i know alot of holey rollers in the churches clame they can and i have seen it done but i have a hard time beleving that it is reall to me it sounds like alot of baby talk
What about other religions.. SO far Only Christian viewpoints?
Voodoism, Shamanism, Wicca, Pagan.. all have been said to chant or speak with tongues..
No, actually. I have heard that many people feel 'closer' when speaking/chanting/praying in tongues, although I have never tried such a thing. I think some of it may be the stigma of mine in hearing that those who are 'possessed' are often those who practice speaking/chanting/praying in tongues.
I find that I feel 'closer' by either humming or listening to repetitive patterns or droning. I linked this in a totally different thread about a week ago, but this is the site I like to turn on before I begin to meditate or attempt to achieve a 'prayer' aspect: Whitney Music Box.
I may try speaking/chanting/praying in tongues eventually, but for now I will stick with what I'm familiar with.
It is something I never believed in. Guess experiencing it would help. very cool.
My mother told me a story about how she was in a church service and began to speak in tongues. It scared her and she felt she'd been possessed by something evil but the minister talked to her and assured her it was a gift from the holy spirit. I don't know that she ever accomplished it again, but it was a very moving experience for her.
Although I walked away from christianity ten years ago I still view my mother as a model christian. She walks the walk and talks the talk but she doesn't go around shoving it down anyones throat. I think her closeness to god brought her the ability to speak in tongues. I think it was given to her as a gift to remind her she is worthy of his love.
When I was studying christianity, I learned that when they call out to their god... Sometimes they make up their own language. When I questioned it, I learned that they do it to keep the devil from understanding them.
It may not be what every christian does...
but some do this.
I studied methodist.
Memory.. THAT is very interesting!
Code against the Enemy
It never happened to me. My grandmother and a lot of people at my first church spoke in tongues. It was mostly at Alter call or during a very heated sermon.
in my experience it has been far from spooky, i´d say hard to believe... i´d like to see the real thing... and as minx states, i´ve only experienced in Christian religions, i´d like to see what about the rest...
I have seen someone doing it, but I think it's a bunch of gibberish myself.
I find this subject fascinating. I've never experienced anyone doing it in person, but I have watched about it on TV. I think a considerable amount of documented cases have just been for publicity. People will do anything to make themselves famous.
It is facinating to see someone speaking in tongues...
I have saw at church one night about two years ago... A woman was speaking in tongues.. and I didnt even know what she was doing.
Its more fascinating to see an 8 year old speaking in tongues... and not be faking it.
Its an artistic flow based on social environment, unfortunately deciphered by manipulating controlling people.
Good example ossy Osborne … he speakers tongues lol
MemoryXIII
I've never heard that before....interesting.
The cynic in me thinks all basses are covered with that reasoning lol
I witnessed this once. It occured through demonic possession.
I have to say I was privy to this before a few times .....one in particular.....I was at a Catholic retreat in a place called Christopher Creek in AZ....I witnessed what was supposed to be the "Gift of Tounges" , givin to others by people who claimed they can give the gift. It was a memorable experience and a wake up call to the extent and seriousness people take thier religions.
This has not happened to me, however I know that sometimes it can be your past life stepping in and your remembering a language that you use to know.
Just a thought.
i know that speaking of tounges can happen to spirit mediums sometimes in trances spirits may speak through such individuals also chanting is good for setting a mood depending what the desired effect is.
That is Interessting LWR... Thank you, I hadn't thought of that, in relation to this.
many of the chants used by native americans are pretty much speaking in tongues. the words do not all have meanings, and are not words as such. they sound like words, and many of the chants are old traditional ones, but new ones can be created, and the chanting often contains made up words that are brought up from the subconscious.
it is is in some ways similar to Enochian, and it is believed that certain sounds created by the voice have power. this belief is also found in Eastern culture (mainly china and Japan) and can be found in other cultures too.
you dont know when it is goina happen you will just be prayin and it does...
As a former Penticostal minister and after decades of reflection I personally regard it as no more than group psychosis.
Originally I was under the impression that the apostles and other judeo/christian characters who spoke in tongues were miraculously speaking other languages than their own. In more recent generations and typically among evangelical christian sects, tongues appears to mean babbling incoherent gibberish while in a state of bliss (especially if you're on camera).
In recent documentaries (JesusCamp for one), I have seen this and found that not only was it rather silly, but the 'phrases' weren't even that complex or resembling any possibility of heavenly inspired language but more like the baby talk that will fall out of your mouth if you just babble without thinking or have ever done warmups as part of an improv class or show.
If there has ever been the ability to 'speak' in tongues (which I don't contest on it's own), it is buried beneath an avalanche of fakers and those who are kidding themselves.
This has never happened to me but I plan on reading up on it . It sounds really interesting and something I would like to know more about
I has never happened to me...but it must be an interesting experiance...and I think I might read up on it
I don't worship anyone, or anything. I personally believe that speaking in togues is usually a complete unifiying obsession with what is happening around you, and something that people desperately want to happen in many cases- I am not belittling it, but I personally think that its us believing what we want to believe, and that is that we are special, and that somebody up there is looking after us.
It looks pretty fake to me but who knows lol ive only seen it on christain tv programs and half the time the ppl are going crazy lol.
The only teacher is experience in this matter and because it is a belief kind of thing, I only know of one place to go. Here is a standing challenge for someone who doesn't think it is possible. Go to www.upci.org , find the church locator, state city or whatever. Find a church close to you. Go on a Sunday morning when you have nothing better to do. Yield to the message. If it doesn't feel like anything is happening the ask someone what you have to do to recieve it. If it happens, come back here and share your ***experience***. We can talk until we are blue in the face and our hand fall off from typing, tort and retort, but the facts are that talk is cheap and actions speak louder than words ever will.
Well I was raised Christian and hated every minute of it but I saw people speaking in tongues all the time at the church!! Speaking in tongues only happens when "the spirit of god" flows through and it is making you speak in a language that no one understands..they are like prayers no one can understand, it is also said that not even the angels can hear what you are saying to god. I dont believe it I think its all fake and people do it for attention...well the Christian religion anyways!!
Minx, you have posted a very indepth question that a lot of people have responded to.... I myself have only heard of such things and have never seen it for myself..... An old friend of mine said she did it once... she was Catholic..... But I haven't really heard tell of it happening in other religions until I started to study them... I don't know much about this type of thing but I do know that it happens during heightened emotions.... Like several have said it happens during or after an intense sermon or ritual, etc...
I have seen people talk in Tongues i do not know what they were saying but i think it is all in the persons mind...
Foreverhelpful - Perhaps I gave this very serious topic a shorter response than it deserved.
I do not mean to imply by psychosis that the practioners are suffering from a strict clinical disorder as may be defined in the DSM IV.
What I really mean by using the term Group Psychosis, is that certain Psychotic features manifest themselves in the group environment and are reinforced by the overall group conduct.
Merriam-Webster defines psychosis as a "...derangement of the mind ...characterized by defective or lost contact with reality especially as evidenced by delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized speech and behavior "
With deranged merely meaning 'to disturb the operation or functions of'...
During tongue talking certainly the functions of the mind have been disturbed to the extent that the subjects experience at the very least delusions, and disorganized speech and behavior.
The fact that others around you are experiencing the same thing validates what you are doing so that you feel the experience is real and not delusional.
Even though I pretty much reject "Acts" as being totally unsound theologically, assuming that I would use it as proof of the gift of tongues, the most I could make of it is that it was a gift disposed so fellow Christians from distant lands could get together and communicate in an effort to further their ends which was the spread of the Gospel.
I would regard the gift of tongues as described in Acts to be merely the gift of translation not the gift to speak in total jibberish.
And I would maintain it is total jibberish. There have been numerous studies by linguists in which the speaking in tongues was analyzed. There is simply no discernable rules of a language such as structure, grammar and volcabulary.
I do not discount the possibility that the participants get something out of the experience. But I would characterize as something more akin to music or a mantra than any form of communication as the word 'speaking' would imply.
There is a delusional belief that there is some special gift of language going on, it is characterized by distortions in belief, behaviour and communication. If this is not a form of psychosis I do not know what I would characterize it as.
Be it angelic, or otherwise...At times I dream and talk in my sleep, most of the time my wife writes what I say down. Half the time, she can barely spell what comes out of my mouth, she claims it sounds like a cross between Romanian, Israelite, and something else...Since no one knows what the angelic language sounds like, than that theory might come into place...Far be it for me to theorize on a language I have not heard from ear.
Case in point, either attention getting zionists, or sleeptalkers...The talking usually wakes me up and I forget what I said anywho. I usually talk to fast for the words to be undestood. But it happens no matter who you are or your belief system.
Minx the way you explained the speaking in tongues the person you know did is what I always understood speaking in toques to be. The common practice of gibberish you see people do on TV and in movies is what it is gibberish. Sorry if I offend.
speaking in tongues is biblical and a form of communication from GOD and if it is disputed that is only becouse the lord of flies fears him, there is truth and there is lies the holy bible dosent lie
This has been a subject I have discussed with other people before. Only because my understanding of it is different. I have had this happen to me. Only reverse. Growing up in the church my understanding was to speak in tongues was to go into the mass and preach or speak the word of god and all would understand. My own ears here my words in english, but anyone else would hear thier native language from my lips.
This has happened to me before.
I speaking with people who did not share my language yet they knew every word I said. Not just one or two but many. In one place. From different areas of the world.
It was along time ago. And I was very young. I was told that I carried on conversations with people talking to me in many different languages. Yet All i heard was english.
That has been my experiance.
I have witnessed it once before i was in church and this old women stood up behind me and started talking in tounges i was freaked out im not quite sure what happens sumone said it was god..but i dont kno about that...
it's the language of the spirits....if it truely happens your suppose to have an interpreter.
my grandma said she went to a church with her sisters where they would start to speak in tongues and her sister would let her hise behind her. It scared the heck out of my grandma.
I think it'd be a crazy thing to see!
This is very intersesting and I would be thrilled to see someone speak in tounges..
My grandmother does that quite frequently she speaks in hebrew wich she honestly hasent studied..and..yeah its god speaking through her or whatever..it happens if your like...ultra religeous.
there are documented cases of ppl speking a language they have never studied. as far as the spiritual part of it. maybe its reincarnated knowledge
Interesting but I think its a type of mass hysteria on a smaller level.
wat's with speaking in other tongues y not just say it so they can understand
Speaking in tongues is documented over 20 times in the Christian bible. There have been numerous claims of individuals who have spoken a language that they have never studied and with an erie proficency.
As to why this occurs, I can only guess. As many of you stated, in many cases speaking in tongues as a religious over tone that hints at possession. Perhaps it is knowledge from a former life or that the capability is within our minds to speak ancient languages.
I think the technical name for this phenomena is 'glossolalia'. I only saw it happen one time, with this church group that I went with when I was a teenager. It creeped me out, to tell the truth. *Shrugs*
Its weird at first but theres a word for that type of cristian i forgot what its called it begins witha 'p' i beleive...but yeah its weird..but my grandma does it so effin much i swear to god...
people that praying in Tongues don't make no sinch too me.
What language is that pray tell? When some lady or guy is babbling and saying things like: "bababakagabababamamajesus."
I think...well "jesus" sounded like english but everything else sounded like baby talk. I can understand (barely) the idea that someone is having a religious experience so powerful that they're just babbling in spritual craze but another language...doubt it.
