A story to start this off then the question. When I was 5, I had a dream that I had the ability to run faster than anyone else. So I started to run, and no not like Forrest Gump lol, I just thought this was my calling. I did this until I was about 10. I never lost a race. It did not matter who it was, where they were from or what their talent was. I never lost, and then it happened. In fourth grade, about age 10 I lost for the first time. But still felt a calling that something was going to be very special about me. I was an average student, nothing special. In fact I would say a little below average, truth be told.

All through school I had this feeling that I was going to accomplish something great. Might be delusions of grandeur, I dunno. But the feeling has stayed with me ever since I was 5. This 'magical' thing has not happened yet as it has not disappeared. It is like a coal in the middle of my chest burning very low.

Now for the question part. Do you think there is some 'special purpose" for you in this life? Something you were meant to do? Also if you think that you have found that thing and done it (or are currently doing it) tell us about it.

This is more about inspiration than anything else, and maybe together we can find our calling or just encourage one another. Yup, kinda sappy =)

Well, of course everyone has a purpose in life, otherwise we wouldn't be here. From kings and queens to the poor, we all have something in our lives that we are here to accomplish whether it be big or small.

When that purpose is fufilled is a different story. I would like to believe that when your life ends, you have completed what it is you are here for, but I can't because like many people out there, I can't seem to find my own niche in life.

So on second thought, perhaps there are "purposeless" souls out there...

That is a cool way to look at it. I guess maybe everyone has something to contribute, but what I am getting at is something different. It is more like when you look out onto a lake and can feel the weight of it and the depth. Or when you see a magestic bird like a hawk or eagle soar you can almost feel your feet leave the ground. Like maybe if you go to the zoo and see a lion and you are energized by the animalistic power there.

Kind of like that but it is something within you, always. Tugging at you to keep going and in almost an forceful way pulling you to some place or time out of sight. Your destiny maybe? Weird I know, but that is what it is like for me.

I think that everyone has a special purpose in life. Unfortunately, I also think that in some cases, we may serve that purpose without even knowing it. Sometimes just a kind word to someone who needs it, or any act that we do, even the most uneventful ones, can change a person's life.

Hopefully, you will figure out what yours is...but if not, does it really matter?

I believe there is a purpose for everybody. Mine, I discovered it when I was about twelve and have kept doing it ever since. i don't know how I knew what I was supposed to do or why, but I just did on the first time. I didn't need to practice or hone my "skill" as everything just kind of came naturally. After I graduated high school, I joined the U.S.M.C. and got to do it even more. Then my back got screwed up, so now I just kind of do it for sport and maybe a little extra money at the range. In case you haven't guessed yet, I have a gift for shooting and being right on the money with damn near every shot. The only shot's that I have missed have been in a strong cross-wind with even higher gusts'. Now that my back is screwed up form the service, I can just go to the range and shot because I can't pass the physical test for law enforcement. But, other than that, there is not much left to say about my "calling" so I will leave it at that. Carpe Noctem

I to have felt this calling you talk about. And everything I do is towards that end. Yet often I feel that there is another different purpose for my life. But I reject it entirely. All the while other people try to push me towards it. But you need to be what you want to be. Callings or not.

I think we all have some type of purose, I still have no idea what mine is yet, but Its a great thought. Sounds like a really wonderfull dream.. I am glad it inspiried you...

I think that there might a specific purpose for each of us. I am not sure about that though. Sometimes I think that I might be living my whole life just to do something ten years from now that might only last a minute or two. Good question.

I think we all have a calling, a special purpose. I wanted to sing until I picked up a guitar. I remember the first electric guitar I ever bought, when I held it I KNEW it was mine, I was gonna get it and it would take me places I'd never seen.

I can relate to your story. Because I also felt the same way when I was 5. I remember being told I was 5 years old and thinking "no way I've been around a lot longer than 5 short years. People would ask me questions like, " are you going to be an Artist when you grow up?" .I would get frustrated when they asked me that and would tell them I am an artist... I always had a gift for art and seem to know it was my special purpose. However ,through my teen years and way beyond I tried on many pairs of shoes; always putting my gift in the closet to be taken out on rare occasions. Finally, when I began a path to self discovery trip I realized the last time I truly knew who I was I was 5 years old.. I returned to school and received my BFA. The journey was wonderful.. I finally felt that I was home.. It was like floating down the river on a raft on a warm sunny day.. Compared to my life before ,when I was swimming against the current. I was finally on my path and I knew it. I am now a working artist and I love my work.. I have known other people that also knew what their hearts desire was when they were only 5. Some follow the path directly ,some like myself take many detours ...

Now that is two stories that inspire me on. Someone who picks something up an knows that this is the time and place for that special thing to happen. That is what I am speaking to, the link between time/place and the instrument of that destiny. Did either of you feel drawn to it? I love guns and can shoot very well as evidenced at military ranges, but when you picked up your weapon, did you just know? And the guitar, was it the same thing? Like a click into place of your calling?

While all of us are here in mortality with the primary purpose to learn and grow, yet in addition to this general purpose many of us find ourselves motivated to aspire and/or achieve a higher calling or purpose while here in mortality.

Like others here, I too have known since very early childhood that I was in possession of a special purpose for which my life has always been dedicated. And through the decades I have persistently endeavored toward the fulfillment of that mission... and have done so successfully. From a first-ever scientific study and the professional publication thereof to coverage in major magazines and appearances on television, I have already accomplished the first phase of that purpose. And with the impending worldwide launch of an equally unprecedented sexual product I invented and patented, I am preparing to embark on the second phase of that purpose... which includes the completion of my non-fiction book into the truths behind the legends and lore of the Slavic "Vampire" and their/our original progenitors and true benefactors, those known as the "Fallen Angels." All of these seemingly unrelated accomplishments and projects are in fact very closely related to my singular mission of assisting in the re-establishment back upon this planet the original gylanic purposes and potentials of our species so essential for our continued survival ... and hopefully before it becomes everlastingly too late.

Everyone has a special purpose in life, its all a matter of letting it find you and accomplishing it, sometimes that purpose is nothing more than to survive and be the brightness of another persons day. Everyopne has a reason for being here. even though we dont always know what the reason is.

i like you sir have had the feeling since i was very young and it still burns inside, like a flame that cannot be extinguished, i have not yet come accross or completed that task, but i do have some ideas as what it might be, and one major thing is bringing pride to my family and name, how i don't know.

When I was young, perhaps 8 years old, I had an impulse deep inside me, much like the feeling you've been describing. As a matter of fact, almost EXACTLY like the one you are describing. ... Whenever I was with my cousin, I had a chance to act on this impulse. We'd imagine we were powerful warriors out to destroy evil. (of course, add the more cheesy details, such as having light sabers and fighting a godzilla-sized version of the devil who had a cursed trident and went around killing people and destroying cities.) ... I always seemed to be the more heroic of both of us. ... Yet, from this experience, I felt almost a deep calling that this representation would return by some symbolic means.
... Now THAT seems more like a delusion of grandeur. It sounds like everyones daydreams. Yet, what does one expect form the Nintendo Generation eh?

The thing is, I can hold onto this feeling that I have a purpose to serve,... but amiss my brooding, I am only wasting time in thinking myself a great entity in becoming. ... Before you know it, I am no better than everyone else,... because the human nature of everyone is to think for the self. ... Its practically the basis of left-handed religions. The whole is not as great as the one, according to the one. And even if my purpose would be to serve some good, I'd still be a prisoner to my own vanity.

I believe everyone in this world has a purpose. Some bigger than others, but thats because i think many people need and want a bigger purpose then just reproducing and such.

It is true that everybody has a purpose in life.Sometime it can be achieved somtime not . so what live the life .

Every one on this planet was put here for a reason, whether it be a simple one or a grand one.

i wish i new what my calling was.. im learning to open my mind for all kinds of things .. every one may laugh about this but i should had went to college to be a quack doctor as i like to help work things out with others.. does that make sence to any of you..

Yes I felt a 'purpose' when I was very young but found myself not being able to identify it for many years.

I believe each of us has a purpose, and one persons purpose whether great in the eyes of the world or not, is equally vallid as any other.

So whether your purpose is to be a leader of a nation or give comfort to one person you meet along the way.....then as the old song says......your living has not been in vain.

I too believe that we each have a purpose in life. I think that it could be more than just one thing but several and the thought has crossed my mind that it may even be something that you might not necessarily choose to do. I have had that same feeling that you have described and yet do not feel that I have accomplished whatever it might be. Yet I also wonder if it could be so slight that I may not have noticed or that we aren't always meant to....

Perhaps you should ask yourself in waiting for something big and magnificent to happen maybe you have missed your calling in some of the smaller things in life...which may lead to the bigger things in life...I don't know just a thought.

Perhaps Maximus its not so much you have a special purpose but of the fact you have been reborn into this life to accomplish something you have not finished in a pervious. And the yearning you are feeling is that of which pulls you towards this goal.

**CLIX** perhaps. little things are usuall more immediate and easily seen. I do participate in life in small ways. Give a hug here or there, saying something kind to someone in need or even those who do not appear to need it. I give of my time, which is more precious than any money, to charity too. But I think what I am talking about is something else entirely. I cannot really adaquately describe it, its definition is elusive and slippery. I dunno, maybe in the end it will all prove to be self delusional after all. But I cannot help but wonder at its origin at such an early time of life. Others have commented as well on this occuring at an early age. Fortunately for some they have met that destiny and are fullfilled. I have not, perhaps one day i will. It heartens and encourages me that others are seeking too. This grand quest for purpose resides in all of us, surely, but making the connection to that purpose is hard. I have given much thought to this and one thing worthy of note is when I travelled around the globe, seeing new places and things, there was an 'almost' connection. Mayhap, this is my destiny. Something having to do with travel, dunno yet, but whatever it might be, I soldier on.

I do agree that most of us have a special purpose in life, one that once fulfilled will lead in eventuality to a final rest in the Afterlife. Some people know what they are destined to do, others know they are destined for greatness, but are not sure what it is they are meant to do. I believe that every soul has great potential, even if it makes a difference to only one person, what you did and who you are still made a difference. I dont think anyone is a lost cause, for that reason.

I would love to think I have a special purpose in life, it would make everything worthwhile and give something to strive for. I am jealous of people who have a special purpose, something that they live and breathe and dream. But, I don't. Or at least I'm yet to come across it. I suppose there's plenty of time though!

The true believer in purposeful lives would say that the purpose of those people is to remind us that there are bad things/people out there, to protect what we hold dear, and so that we never stray down that sort of path.

Yes, Maximus, when I first picked up my very first rifle, something deep inside of me just went "This is it. It feels right, it feels good, and I feel good about having it." and I was hooked ever since. My second weapon was a 12ga. shotgun, and at first I thought this is too big and heavy to do much good, but when I started shooting it my opinion changed entirely. Then I got into hunting, and knives, and just expanded my skills from there. Then I got into pistols, and the rest, as they say, is history. But that very first time I picked up a projectile weapon, my instant thought was that all of it just felt soo right. Then I got in the military, gained more knowledge, and came home without serious injury. Now, with all of my previous knowledge and skills, and what I learned in the military, I hand hunt for the most part with my Ka-Bar and skills. we may be here to accomplish something we have not finished in a previous life. I have felt that yearning that pulled me towards my destiny.

Life is what you make it, it is all about choices. There may be some circumstances that push you towards a certain decision but ultimately, I dont believe people have any kind of destiny other than what they choose for themselves.

Yes we have a purpose in this life and its up to us to fulfil it to the best of our abilities. We are here to touch upon other peoples lives and learn from each other and grow as individuals.

I do believe that everyone has a special purpose while here. I do not know what mine is however. I just try to live everyday to the fullest and try to help at least 3 people everyday....maybe just being here for others is my purpose...it is something i enjoy doing and I hope it makes others happy as well. I do hope you find you and fulfill it entirely.....maybe someday I will figure out mine as well. Until then just do all you can to make your life the best it can be and help make others lives that way as well.

Yes I believe we all have a special purpose to fulfil when we are born to this life. Whatever the purpose is we tend to forget when we grow up and society, life and responsiblitites take over. So its a matter of living your life to the fullest, knowing when to change to a job that is more satisfying, leaving an abusive relationship, etc. This all goes towards helping you find your purpose in life.

And your purpose tends to be something that drives you, pushes you to do more for yourself and to be happy.

Yeah, proly, ebody shou undestan that their special purpouse is some sort of fullrealization, since ebody is made out of the same material, same essence.

I believe in a higher purpose for ourselves or life wouldn't be worth living, trick is finding that path and following it, just that sometimes other things or people get in the way or mislead you.

I think none of us were put here for a special purpose that we all have the ability to be great and need to not be lazy and choose to be great. You could have decided you did not what to run then no special purpose or people who are crazy and kill a ton of people is that there special purpose if so we are choosing to give them an excuse. If you do something good or bad you should take credit for it because you are the one that did it.

*HFS* thanks, I have lots of things bouncing in my head almost all of the time. This is a good way to get it out and examine it. Besides we have a good variety of people here who have the ability to help and others view things from other angles and positions. Helps get a new and maybe unique perspective.

Yes. To me saying "you were put here for a purpose" is like a crutch. It is like saying I did it because someone made me. I believe everything you do in this world is because of you doing it and not because of pre determined fate. You choose to do good, evil, strive for greatness or be a lazy bum. Everything bad you have done you decided to do it and everything good you accomplished because you have chosen to be great. I commend you for running and choosing to do something special

I think that everyone has a purpose in life and i think, that some people can be called to what they are to do and other people have to find their own way, but if you like doing something do it, i mean if you were called to do that than you are doing what you were meant to do and if that was not your calling atleast what you are doing is enjoyable to you...

I believe everything happens for a reason so in that sense I guess I do believe everyone has a purpose in life but each persons purpose is of their own and some people will fullfill their purpose and never know

i do not think that people will know what their purpose in life is i think people should do what makes them feel good and atleast they will be happy

*sea* Thanks for clarifying. While I think everyone should be held to account for thier misdeeds and be exalter for thier virues, I also think that people can create thier own destiny to an extent. Some are born with a silver spoon so to speak and have life mostly planned out for them by someone. Others find thier destiny or special skill or perhaps even thier special someone. These, IMO, are the grand design. The wheel of life turns and all that...lol. I dunno what the future holds, I know I have only been on this go around once, as there is no instance where I have felt like I have been there before (unlike Patton) and I do not think I have a sense of grandeur like Napoleon or Hitler. I just think that there are circumstances in my life that have made it clear that I am to do something great. What that is remains to be seen.

I could recite to you all a resume of events that lead me to this conclusion, but I won't. I have shared some in my journal and more still with friends I have made here.

It could be just helping people out. When a friend of mine is in need, I always try and help out the best I can. Give it my all to make them happy.

I feel we all have a purpose in this life. Everyone that touches our lives or those lives we touch causes some kind of reaction whether it be good or bad yet I feel we all do make a difference to someone in this life. all paths cross for some reason it is up to us to know or find out that reason.

Regardless of our individual "calling" to our purpose in life, we all have one regardless of your beliefs. Whether we are continuing our search for our purpose in a different body and different life, or find our purpose in this life and body, we all will arrive at the discovery of our own unique and special purpose. Interesting topic. If you believe we're all here to serve our own specific purpose, you'd almost have to believe in fate/predestination as well. I'm not sure how I feel about this subject sometimes. I'd like to believe the Gods have a plan for all of us, but how much will they interfere in the events of your life to ensure that plan is followed and it's outcome fulfilled? I suffered a stroke after my youngest son was born and came very close to dying, yet I not only lived, but fully recovered. This makes me think I'm still here for a reason, I just don't know what that reason is. I also believe in reincarnation, so does that mean we have a specific purpose to each lifetime that we live? So many questions and so few answers lol

i feel like mine is to help others with problems they have i have always down this since i was a teenager so yes this i believe is like my calling. I would half to go to collegd to actionly pursue my field of being a realantionship counlser. I believe someday that will be for filled. i have to i am a empath but the special gift that i have i can see people orras (forgive my spellings) so i can see and not only feel how people feel and see how they felt as they grew up and were they made big changes in there lives and some times i can feel the thoughts of someone that going to die

I have had this notion of my "special purpose" but I think it was more something I fabricated in my mind rather than something I really believed. I get this sense that I can really accomplish something, and yet, when it comes around to actually trying to accomplish that goal, I realize that I am not as excellent as I made myself believe. I get this feeling mostly with swimming, cross country or track. Anything competitive really.

I believe that we all have a special purpose in life. Most of do not know exactly what that purpose is and I believe that if we do not fulfill our destiny then we are reincarnated and will continue to be until we can reach that destiny.

As a believer that everything happens for a reason I have to say yes. Everyone plays a part of outcomes in peoples lives. Good and bad.

I always thought my pupose was to be a mom and to share all the love I have. Now things aren't going so well in that department. So I took a deeper look into me. I know I am meant to nurture children who need me, so I have decided to spend my time volutneering as a teacher for blind little children.

i have my own little story.... i grew up always getting picked on and at the age of 5 i decided to not take it anymore ......i went to roughest street in my block and picked a fight with the local bully and i got the shit beat out of me but it felt good ...well next thing i know my mom signs me up for martial arts training but the teacher tells me i am to slow of a learner so my mom gets our japanese nieghbor to agree to teahc me aikido and kenjitsu ...

about a month later the same bully is picking on some little kid then i step in and nearly kill that fucker ... i ofund my purpose to defend those who cant defend themsleves ... i did this up until the day i graduated high school and then i joined the USMC as an 0311 ...up until i get my knee fucked up and get sent home .... i am now starting to do my old calling i am going to hunt those who prey on the innocence and good poeple of my current town

I wanted to include that I think sometime your purpose can change also. Like if you develope a new skill or hit a brick wall elsewhere. Sometimes it can take a twist.

NightHunter87- Have you given any thought to teaching other to defend themselves for free or maybe a small fee? This would kind of follow the teach a man to fish idea instead of you bringing the fish to them by taking the bad guys out. Just a thought.

you know i must admite that i have never felt the calling or maybe i wasn't listening to good. either way i hope someday i will get that to. but yes there is a purpose why we are all here but i think its up to us how we use it and live it.
