i picked up from the bookstore a couple days ago a book called the vampire watchers handbook, a book for the vampire slayers by Constantine gregory, in the book it tells everything from how to identify to where to find, something stood out though , it states in this book that cannibalism, is vampire ism,, any thoughts on this ?

There is one difference between the two that I can think of right off hand....

Vampirism is mainly the act of drinking just the blood, not eating the flesh.

Cannibalism has to do with mainly eating and divulging of the flesh.

I personaly can see how they might have linked the two together. My views of the Vampires of myth and legend tend to put them as more of a carnivorous creature. Yet I doubt that those living a typical Vampire Lifestyle are anywhere near being cannabalistic. And since the myths refer to the Vampire corpes as not being human anymore, cannabalisim just doesn't fit by definition. They are nolonger human. But a carnivore that hunts humans for food. On comes to recall the Myth of the Wendiego. >;]

It would be easier to confuse Vlad III Dracula and his barbaric acts with fiction of a blood drinker and to call it cannibalism irrispective of the truth

technically yeah you could say that vampirism is a form of canniblism.

but i dont consider myself a cannible though. and i dont think you would be wise to start calling vampires that either. it will offend someone at some point. more trouble then its worth

I don't think cannibalism and vampirism are one and the same. There are cultures that drink blood for nutrients, cannibalism tends to have a more mystical attachment.

I just looked it up on Amazon. Looks like an interesting read from the cover. But I guess you can’t judge a book by.....never mind. I don’t know about the link between those. Cannibalism is the consuming of the body. Blood is the stuff that keeps it alive. Just because you've drunken gasoline doesn’t mean you can eat a car.

I like the taste of blood, I don’t need it but I like it. That doesn’t mean I’m a cannibal. Besides, I hear we taste like chicken. I HATE CHICKEN. To gamey.

Tis just someone's opinion, and I take it for what it is. It sounds as if the author has been watching too many old horror movies.

I dont know about that dear. The term cannibalism means that you eat your own kind. So if Vampires are everything that people seems to think they then they are not canniables by default.

especialy in older definitions, cannibalism is often used to describe a being that must sacrifise its own kind for nourishment or to survive, and not just eating, in this way, cannibalism can include drinking of blood.
also, although a number of modern vampires dont, steriotypical and 'old style' vamps tend to bite the flesh to drink, thus making it easy to mistsake it for cannibalism

Well the book itself appears to be a novelty book, which is to say that the author (one "Constantine Gregory" of St Peter's Church in Whitechapel London) is in fact, Craig Glenday and (with illustrations by Chris Daunt).

However, the idea that a cannibal is in some way a vampire only shows the broadening definition of the word vampire. I would hardly think that cannibal natives of early islanders in the Pacific could be called vampires except under the widest interpretation of the name. I will always reserve a undefiled place for what I consider to be the larger mythological archetype that is the undead and immortal vampire.

While I will not argue that modern definitions and new uses of the word are not only growing but gaining wide acceptance, it will not be something that I mix into the other definition but remain two distinct uses of the same word. I'll just have to add cannibal to the possible new uses for vampire.

If cannibalism is a sign of vampirism then you might as well kill off every species. All species eat their own. lol... even humans eat their own when it comes down to life and death so in a sense, everyone is a vampire... lol

Well blood drinking can often be called cannibalism because you are feeding off of a person when you drink that person's blood, so that maybe one way that the two things are though to be as one, but personally I think there is a difference from actual cannibalism and just drinking blood.

This book is listed in our Vampire Database under books.

I believe it was submitted by my friend (despite her being a Jedi!), JedixMasterxCheryl.

I have read this book and found it grossly over exaggerated albeit entertaining.

Well that provokes an irresistable answer cannibalism is in fact a starter, but there is a difference between cooked and not. The blood makes it all the better. Read up on this stuff if it interests you so much.

We might assume that cannibalism was one of the earlier practices wich later led to a transformation of a full abled Vampire.

I have read a lot of articals that all talk about canibalism being spiritual as the belief was you are eating the essence of the victim and absorbing them.

Cannabalism pushes the limits of cultural relativism. Yet, the drinking of blood is a form of cannabalism, therefore, society believes it is beyond acceptable human behavior and that is why the Vampire Community lacks acceptance.
