*Clears throat* Well, regarding RP, as always my convictions remain the same when it comes to those lycan dogs...On a leash, by their masters side where they belong.
On a serious note, since we may be speaking about fantasy, the Loupe Garou and the vampire are only enemies due to comics, movies, and literature. In folklore, these two seperate entities had not met unless it was in a campfire story.
It is your choice as to whether or not to make the whole "Underworld" a reality, just remember that somethings get burnt out sooner or later.
Wel my sister is Lycan and I am vampire we fight but we get get along for the most part
Well, if you truly believe yourselves to be vamp and or lycan...Then it could possibly be instinct as to whether or not the two could co-exist.
Instinct, as in natural order of things. Not if you choose to be, but the true nature regarding the aspect of the animal ferocity they feel toward one another.
Right, 'Lycan' was coined by the movie Underworld. That term was not used before it. So it is truly so very hard to take any thread serious that uses it.
my best and longest going friend is lycan and we fight all the time but its just for fun
well Im not to sure...
although I can see why they would be enemies....
Vampires has been mentioned (by description) internationally in legend and myth since around 3000BC.
They have been mentioned in public record by the name 'vampire' (that spelling) since 1725 and 'vampyre' (that spelling) since 1732
Lycans have been mentioned only since 2003, the director Len Wiseman says he invented the name for the film Underworld from the mental illness, Clinical lycanthropy, where the patient believes that they turn into a wolf. The clinical term was based on the legend of the werewolf
Before 2003 the term for these critters was plain ole 'werewolf' who were easy to spot every full moon, mostly because they would turn really furry and start howling at the moon ... they could not control it
Anyone who starts talking about the legends of lycans, wars or the two 'races' being long term enemies is lost in the world of Role Playing Games
Gotta love wikipedia.....lol
Lycanthropy is the ability or power of a human being to undergo transformation into a wolf, or wolf-like characteristics. The term comes from Greek lykánthropos (λυκάνθρωπος): λύκος, lýkos ("wolf") + άνθρωπος, ánthrōpos ("man") (Rose, 230).
The word lycanthropy is sometimes used generically for any transformation of a human into animal form, though the precise term for that is technically "therianthropy". Sometimes, "zoanthropy" is used instead of "therianthropy" (Guiley, 192).
The word has also been linked to Lycaon, a king of Arcadia who, according to Ovid's Metamorphoses, was turned into a ravenous wolf in retribution for attempting to serve human flesh (his own son) to visiting Zeus in an attempt to disprove the god's divinity.
There is also a mental illness called lycanthropy in which a patient believes he or she is, or has transformed into, an animal and behaves accordingly. This is sometimes referred to as clinical lycanthropy to distinguish it from its use in legends.
You also have a whole "otherkin" subculture that follows the belief that their astral presence is that which transforms into either a mythical creature or actual animal.
There is a wolf subculture that exists. Much like the Vampyre Community but differ in important ways.
DarkTraveler thank you,
that is Lycanthropy, the sufferers of which were called werewolves until 2003 when the term Lycan was first used
I thought that lycanthropy was used long before the movie....Like someone posted even in Ovid and mythology.
i dont believe they are enemys
my cousin is a lycan and i am a vampyre
Myths and legends and yet again the movies plot, we all believe in what we want, and here we go with strucuture of society, splitting races. Why we all should put racism away, we like or dislike a person( vamp or Lycan) on the basis of what or how they act. So enemies no hollywoods version.
Each individual holds the power to make their own enemies.
Therefore, I do not believe that enemies are necessarily predetermined.
Most of the stories about Vampire & Lycans being enemies do seem to stem from comics & movies. As LadyPatricia stated above, I don't believe that enemies are predetermined.
Like the dozens of times this topic has been asked...Vampires and werewolves are fictional..."Lycan" is short for lycanthrope...which comes from the word lycanthrophy....much like everyone else has posted. Some people need to step away from the computers and board games for a bit...get out into the real world and learn fact from fiction.
VotreLouve
Yes, that's the point .. Lycanthropy was used long before the movie, but the term Lycan was not.
Yes, i have vampiric friends. and we do not feel the need to kill each other, ushally....
as the one above me said Na also Hiedi mentioned
'Lycan' was coined by the movie Underworld. That term was not used before it. So it is truly so very hard to take any thread serious that uses it.
Yet I have always felt that *the Wolf* and Vampire were always linked in some way or another. I mean the Werewolf as it were has done the bidding and work for the Vampire for as long as I can remember reading LOL
So I do not see why they cannot be friends, my best friend is Wolven so .. :0 not much I can say .
Artemka, was just checking. Having one of those days, and after 5 episodes of Blue's Clue's my mind just shuts down. Hehehe.
VotreLouve, that's OK - at least you are reading the thread LOL
Once you get past the term 'Lycan' as a very modern made up name, you are only left with 'werewolf'
Very few people claim to be werewolf, possibly because it doesn't sound as kewl as Lycan - but also because the werewolf changes are supposed be out of the individuals control - so simply dragging them out to the full moon would soon reveal the lack of fur.
In my honest opinion if either did exist in reality I don't think they'd get along. Seeing as they don't seem to in many fictions.
Artemka...I prefer Loup-Garou. Hehehe. As my new sn shows, I am someones wolf and he is mine.
But in all seriousness, I think that RPG'ers take the movies and comics a bit to far.
Threads similar to this have been done a lot. I will say the same thing I always do. The fued between the two is fictional. Something made up by hollywood. Hollywood did pretty good too considering how popular Underworld was. I don't think it's real though. THere may be some that have seen it in hollywood, liked the idea, and ran with it. I just think it's all fictional. Something to sell money. An interesting concept for film, but not for real life.
