Using the character from Star Trek there are many theories why an entity with such “god” like abilities would ever consider even approaching a biologically struggling entity like humanity. There could be aspects of ego or hubris in the entities reasoning, or would it be an attraction of like?
Consider the ability to live in any time or place by merely making your mind up to do so.
Or the potential to never be sick and live eternally.
With the collective Q was it their own abilities that created the quandary of becoming bored with their state of being or the aspect of living eternity with eternal beings?
The Vampire myths typically do not revolve just around the aspect of immorality but the situation of being eternal with the same emotions and thought process of humans. Q does not have that same moral background of being human previously. Given that, do you theorize that their actions in regards to humanity come from a need driven by ego or a more complex psychological reason to “connect” with another species?
There are other scientific theories that could come into play, such as quantum physics or even other theories of time and light. What in those theories would create such a physical response that the behaviour is such? Do you think that time travel would have an effect on such a being, thus creating a potential “crazed” behaviour?
Any posts stating this is interesting, or that treat this question as a poll will be deleted. Remember the Dark Network also contains the SciFi Section, thus this thread is placed in this section.
I am interested in discussing the potentials here so if there are other aspects I have not thought of please bring them up.
Well after reading the post the part that caught my attention was the part of time travel thru the different dimensions and how it would effect the person/ being. In my opinion I do we are evolved enough as humans to be able to grasp the ability to do such a think i think that yes it would cause great chaos to some and in a sort cause a split in the persons mind. but that is just my opinon. But it would be very nice to just think of a place and there for be there. I mean the ability to do that on the atral level is one thing but to do it on this plane is another. great post !
consider also that the q could exist on muliple dimentions of the same time line as well....yeah i guess it would get boring but for some reason q enjoyed insulting commander riker an awful lot lol
My thoughts are probably of a more pschological reasoning... Possibly to experience the emotions of man by personal contact with them, their struggles their motives in life, needs, etc. Something that the collective Q might normally be immune to and rarely experienced.
The injected uncertainty, the fringe factor, with the imaginable element, such a could-be.. A real one to ponder.. Q was a bit "out there".
i dont know that would seem beneith the q in my opinion.
I am getting Discordianism for some reason.. I must look that up and see what connection I am imagining between the two..
here I go revealing how much of a trek geek I am....
But in Star Trek: Voyager....
One of the Q wished to give up his powers and immortally, simply because he felt he had done everything there was to do....
the concept that forced Immortally could be viewed as an intolerable life maybe the ultimate lesson in becareful for what you wish for.
That is Grade-A Geek.. Did he do it for a short while what made him not do it /or undo it?
True but that still does not answer the question of why a group of individuals linked such as Q would ever take an interest in humanity.
There are many tangents this thread can go into, but the primary one I would like to discuss are those stated above along with potential reasons of what aspect of Q created the impluse that lead to their complex interaction with humanity.
"With the collective Q was it their own abilities that created the quandary of becoming bored with their state of being or the aspect of living eternity with eternal beings?"
Is it possible (albeit speculative) that if the collective Q became "bored with their state of being", that they weren't as perfect as they 'thought' they might be? Maybe by interacting with humans or even another species/being they may have learned something that was previosly overlooked or thought and added to their collective conscience?
Dabbler....
once the Q had lost his powers and immortally....
he committed suicide....
happily.
Several of the interactions, showed that while more "powerful" than humanity, Q did not have a moral code in the same manner that humans have. Perhaps this difference gives us the perception of less than perfect or not as powerful.
Do emotions and ego make us weaker? Because if that is a potential it could be part of the issue with Q certainly.
i remember that episode, they had a trial and left janeway to decide his fate lol......it did make a good point though if you have done everything there is to do.....what would be the point in going on?....it would be unbearable.
Saharia...
why do modern civilized humans take interest in the primitive tribes of the Amazon or New Guinea?
it's because we wish to learn how human culture may have evolved.....
To the Q, humans are the first step to "godhood", similar to how humans compare themselves to single-celled organisms.
In answer to your question, Sahahria. I believe emotions can make us weaker, some of us. Take love for example, for some it can make us feel stronger, or it can break us!
What is the one emotion the collective Q may not have experienced... Fear? By interacting with humanity, they may have gotten a better understanding of this emotion.
As HAWK2K stated, "once the Q had lost his powers and immortally....he committed suicide...."
Why would Q commit suicide after losing his powers of immortality?
Every thing but die.. well stay away from us humans because we die .. and we accept that everybody dies.. so the thing we admire in Q , Q admires (whether they acknowledge it or not) our lack of.
Imagine a Q being the first to Die in a eternal race.. I mean boy they must have envied her..
however the q did consider the human race as a primative species so wht exactly were they wanting to learn?........it would kind of be a contradiction , i mean to lower themselves and learn from humans?.....no i think the q had another agenda.
we need to have the possibiity of death to affirm life. life without death has no meaning.
After eons of time doing anything and everything they could think of life had lost any real meaning to them. The contact with humans was mostly just by 1 or 2 of the Q, who found them fascinating in their primitive views and lifespans. One of their finest pleasures was to watch humans struggle to overcome desperate odds to stay alive or free, usually after Q put them in that position to start with such as tossing them to the Borg.
The Q's civil war was about the rules they were supposed to follow and after all that freedom elsewhere they couldn't handle rules. They as a collective all seemed to be mentally off in one way or another. I guess insanity of some type could be the result of all that power and time.
well once you have learned everything and had the powers what else would there be? I mean that would seem a boring and useless existance in my opinion if you no longer were learning any knowledge.. Q was happy to die. I am sure...
I think that Q powerful as a Q is, approached humanity beacuse of its good natured disposition toward people.
As a omnipotent being Q finds his amusement in the interaction in the Universe, and its possibilities, and he interacts good natured, and approached at the first place, beacuse he perhaps sees something the way he was once, and with that thought Q continues to interact, and even assist on some occasions.
Perhaps he feels like he should teach something, broaden the horizons.
Q has to be attracted in some way, otherwise he wouldnt make a contact.
The reason, considering such omnipotent state of a being, must be that he is just delighted to interact wich a species wich is in its path of learning new things and them selves, and the ways of the Universe, and by the way, Q might father them in a way.
He certainly has a interest in a species of peaceful explorers, and there he can be a kid as well, satisfieing his curious playful nature, with out being hated, but never going too far.
But what is too far for a omnipotent being such as Q, wich can restore anything just by a snap of a finger?
Certainly Q has alots to teach to the underconditioned mind of a struggling species.
Perhaps thats the purpouse of his interaction, but since it is difficult to show more to those wich are struggling, Q cant but kill some time by making all kind of bad jokes, and things to happen.
i think Q's interaction with humans is rather like ho an adult might try to interact with a very young child. we try to understand their games and play along, but we cannot take them as seriously as a child does, so the intrusion is resented.
The part that cought my eye was the time travel, and Q
I am a star trek fan, It would be awsume to time travel but there is alot of math to deal with and getting it rite,
and being immortality mmmm I agree with u there but
the god on star trek that is thought
well I think Q was happy to die. I mean he had all knowldge, powers to travel through different dimensions, and he was getting bored to the point he was crossing the line with his powers... to me to be Q it had to be driving me insane or just had not emotions or feelings to the point of inhumane. So I would want to die.
When Q committed suicide, what do you think the remaining collective Q would have felt or thought about this? Would they have learned or felt any new emotions? Q's suicide could be looked at as a personal sacrifice that enabled the collective Q to, for the first time, experiance something human. Losing a member of their own to death.
I think that, even though the Collective Q were considered perfect, they had weaknesses when compared to humans.
Bones I really like how you put that, I mean for them to finally experience the sacrific of one of their own that maybe they could remember to feel, or change them in some way....
i think what attracted the q to suicide is that was the last great unknown for him he just had to know.
I enjoyed the Q characters.
Personally I think they viewed humans with envy and wonderment.
In their own evolution they seemed to forget how good it felt to strive for anything worthwhile rather than the instant gratification of a finger snap.
its all about the ego! being reveared and/or worshipped is just a bonus.
there is no doubt the q had a huge ego , thats for sure lol....but i mean they were god like and btw they even said that they were not omnipotent....just an fyi.
the audacity of Q was beyond ego~!
he said he would test the crew of the enterprise, and they they jumped through some hoops and figured they passed the test.
then Q at the end of the series re-appeared before the trial to say that all the turmoil the crew has ever gone through for a very long time was all due to his ongoing test. so he has been screwing up the enterprises life, putting them through danger for possibly years, all as a test.
but the worst part was he knew that the crew thought the test was over and that they had crappy luck.
gods would be a terrible thing to experience as a human.
the q have a lot in common with some of the admins on this site , they are quick to point out the short commings of others and full of themselves lol
Atyourwindow I have to disagree with that last post. First there are two sides to every story, and frankly not all of them should be public knowledge. Secondly that post is way off topic, and is in fact a flame.
Please stick to just the topic.
Ego is a very good point as to even potentially some of the reason Q took interest in humanity. Some of the behaviour is very similar to a schoolyard bully. Claiming it is a "test", still not giving the parameters or information to be successful in the "lessons".
The q had reached an impass...
they had progressed as far as they could and had pretty much ceased to evolve.
Along come humans, and their only real merit is that they are still evolving; which gives the q an opportunity to get past the evolution baracade that they encountered.
Yet who's to say that Q was not still growing and evolving. Just because they were powerful and we don't fully understand them does not mean they are done evolving. Perhaps they interacted with humanity to further evolve?
It's been a really long time since I've bothered to watch TV... but it sticks in my mind that there was an episode where one of the q had a child... or something like that. That it was a shattering experience for the q because of the changes that it affected; and they weren't used to changes.
Of course... it's been a long time since I've seen it; but it seams to me that it was an ongoing theme. Even the first (or was it the second) episode of ST:TNG where they were on trail seamed to be exploring this theme... that it was BECAUSE they evolved from a warlike species to a peaceful one that they were allowed to live. That they were on the brink of destruction and that they evolved to overcome their warlike ways... that you could not compare the culture of the post apocolyptic earth with that of the generation that was on trail.
It seamed to me to set the tone of every franchise after the origional episodes that it was all about mankind's ability to evolve and adapt. Not ina beat over the head with a club kind of way... but it seamed like it was a meter for the plots and metaplots.
they q were not against petty things like drama, i mean they are the ones who introduced humans to the borg lol...oooh i do hope you start a borg thread and explore the similar vampire and borg aspects hehe
i think the Q wanted to understand the human emotions personally...
I believe at first the Q wanted to know the human race but as they learned more and more they found that the human race was way too much like them started fearing since they had a less sophisticated mind then the Q they would try to destroy them rather then be part with them.
However thats my mind set I always believed the Q to be the real villian in TNG rather then borg or klingon I mean they brought the borg from the other side of the galaxy to the enterprise and also how many times was it Q who were bored and wanted entertainment use us for their games.
Behaviour is thought, thought is energy, energy is the universe.
The Q would have every ability to create some new world and learn things, not be bored etc. If you live in a moment of time you are not aware of the things to come, due to the nature of time and parallel universes.
However if you lived in a location "above" time, e.g in or above the 4th dimension then you would constantly know all things and could easily become bored.
As far as hanging out with us wee humans I would imagine that, if Q lived in A time, they would find our erratic behaviour interesting. The quest for knowledge is more than A-Z it's also the understanding of any unknown quantity i.g humanity.
Immortality does not denote total wisdom or even knowledge. An immortal vampire would have to live an enternity to know all things, currently they're just "3,305" years old...as an example. To continue on, being that Vampires (generally speaking) are connected with humans and stuck here on earth it would stand to reason that while their wisdom may be great their knowledge would only be at current rates.
I would go on but I'm afraid my rampant associative looseness will get the better of me :)
Those are great responses. I to have thought about the idea in doing "good" the Q do more harm. Yes they did introduce the Borg to humanity knowing they could travel to where it was.
As for the idea of living in a different time dimensions is one I was hoping would be discussed in this thread.
what gets me is in all the hunderds .....maybe thousands of species the borg assimilated they never got the knowledge of time travel ....and the q knowing the past present and future were at the time participating in the new time lines from the start....so i wonder, is linear time even relevent?
it would seem this conversation is dead, but ill rant on anyways lol....does anyone remember the episode of star trek voyager called "omega" it was a powerful particle and rare in space that was an unlimited source of energy...anyways all star fleet captains who were briefed on the subject were sworn to keep it secret even if it meant abandon the prime directive, the borg had learned of it and considered it perfection "god".....its all perspective....if you found the omega particle and then was introduced to the q with seemingly unlimited powers you would be in such awe it would be hard to determine which was the deity.....and that concludes the star trek geek moment of the day lol...
Imagine if you had that ability; It would be most entertaining to walk amongst an unevolved being and watch as they grow. I mean as it is we study the past in a curious fassion, why would a being of that capacity not want to watch the lower species for entertainment, to study and learn of the past and the potentail of a lower species.
the conversation is never dead brother ayw , im glad to see so many fans of star trek on the site ...the show does bring up some very good questions about our place in the universe.....i believe the "Q" is what we are talking about a god like being who feels the need to show off his powers and alter the course of human and other cultures history.....or is the q just the highest point of human evolution?....maybe the fascination with human culture and their lives is because that is what the q have evolved from...(ancient humans)...just a theory...i mean why else would they be interested?
