Hi Everyone,
Recently I came across an article online about some very ancient maps (16th century) that show South America, Alaska when it was still connected by the land bridge to Siberia (which was thousands of years ago), the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and Antarctica’s coast line before the ice formed which is estimated to be around 6000BC!!!
These maps were according to stories, were copied from even earlier maps, that were originally kept in the Great Library of Alexandria, destroyed by invading Arabs in AD 640. A Turkish pirate by the name of Piri Reis (beheaded in 1554) claimed he had based his map on 20 old maps.
The Piri Reis map, long known to scholars, shows Antarctica, South America and the coast of the South Pole accurately as well as measuring the latitude and circumference of the earth. According to Hapgood, the mapmakers responsible for the earliest maps must in some ways have been more technically advanced than sixteenth-century Europe and the ancient civilizations of Greece, Egypt and Babylonia.
A man by the name of Charles Hapgood who was a professor of the History of Science first came across these maps in the late 1950’s when he was told about them by an old friend who was also a retired Navigator whose hobby it was to study old maps. A copy of the Piri Reis map had made it’s way into the Library of Congress and Charles Hapgood asked to see them. Needless to say, what Hapgood saw convinced him that there was once a much earlier civilisation that they had ever dreamed about, thousands of years earlier than even the Egyptians or Mesopotamia and then this unknown civilisation disappeared or was destroyed in some unknown cataclysm leaving only their advanced scientific knowledge behind.
Was this unknown civilisation the origin of the ‘Atlantis’ Myth? The timing seems to be about right, what do you think??
Here are some websites where you can see the maps and get more information if you are interestedJ

This is so cool! I'm also guessing that that great cataclysmic event gave rise to the Atlantis and variety of flood myths.
I always liked looking at that Piri Reis map, hoping that it was drawn from factual info and earlier maps. Will check out the links for sure!
yes thats definatly the origin of atlantis.pliny also met the priests of heliapolis who preserved the tru history of the world and said that civilsations rise and fall, suddenly being destroyed in a cataclysm.it can happen anytime.
Oh this is so one of my favorite subjects. I have read alot about it and watched every show on discovery and history channel. i will do a big post when i get home
Great thread !
Very interesting subject. Love the thread WickedWhisper. I have always wondered about the maps that pointed to what is thought to be Atlantis but have never really had the time to do much research on it. I will definately check out the links that have been posted.
Taking a gander at your question though I would have to say that this could possibly be the origins of Atlantis.
A tale told by a great story teller. However some people use it as a spring board for fringe claims. A DIY mystery topic. Rehashed along with the Triangle.
They usually work in degrees of removal, claiming proof based on proof that has been some how lost, just like the "continite" was.
Hi Dabbler, excellent point. Some people try to bounce a completely improbable idea off a therotically sound notion and just end up destroying any credence of both idea's, it just drives me mad.
Needless to say, i'm just presenting the facts of the maps which do show pysical geographical features of the earth which weren't discovered until the 19th or 20th centuries being drawn up on maps proven to be at least 400 yrs old.
I know the common use of inconclusive geography by Atlantis hunters, and Bermuda Triangle entuisist, and I have heard it in various forms since I was twelve. It took me to ask the one question to dis-spell
myself from Atlantis, I asked what will be settled by accepting that an advanced civilization destroyed its self? Say we did find conclusive evidence that Atl. was more then a Fable, I think we would get the same result that was intended by the story, that we need to advance at a stable pace, or we could "kill our selves with theoretic power sources". What about studying the story for fable sake? What was the teller trying to tell the children by telling the story? The actual existence requires that we ignore the origin of the oral tradition of the story.
The main reason i study ancient myths and try to see if there are any truths behind them is personally for me a interest as i've always been a curious soul plus i believe in the old say " those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it", i've got that on my profile as my quote.
I believe that saying would fit excatly with the Atlantis story, as if the maps were orginally created by caragraphers from altantis, then hopefully we would be able to determine what destroyed atlantis to begin with and hopefully avoid their mistakes. of course, this is all based on the supursition that the civilisation that disappreared was atlantis to begin with.
Ahhh, and tales are all told to children to be taught. Excellent point dabbler:)
i have seen this one night on the weather channel they were explaing the earth changes through the centuries
Well, I think many historians and cartographers authenticated the Piri Reis map, so now the research regarding Atlantis can go on from there without worry of any previous hoaxes at least.
Very well could be. I pictured it to be warmer.
I was told long ago in a psychic reading that I was a top holy person in Atlantis. I was part of the higher ups and that our technology became too advanced and destroyed us.
I believe that there have been a number of civilizations here on earth over time that have been lost due to natural forces. Since most of the planet is under water it would be almost impossible for us to find archaeological evidence of these civilizations as they are submerged. I also am quite interested in Native American accounts of history, which account for at least four "worlds" prior to this one. Atlantis may well have existed among those previous worlds, or in the last 12,000 years of this one.
Really DemainA,
I would really be intrested in learning more about the stories about these prior worlds as it's part of my studies in anthropology and as part of a project i'm preparing to undertake some reasearch on for VR.
