Does Anyone here have Night Terrors.....? If So What do you do to get through them? Or if you know of anyone that has them what do they do?
I'm pretty sure that night terrors are very rare in adults. If you're having them, you may want to seek medical care from a sleep lab.
My only experience with them is my son. He's 4 and has had them on and off since infancy. NOT fun for the mommy and daddy.
im 18 and still have nite terrors. whether its my mind messing with me or the fact that im being taunted by demonic spirits of the past i usually put on som music, preferably manson or slipknot , close my eyes and bout 10min later theyve vanished on
...can you explain to me exactly what a night terror is? i'm not sure if i have them or not. i know i have some pretty fearsome dream sequences now and again. if they are night terrors, tho, i'm not sure...
sorry never had them. my niece used to have terrible nightmares but they went away in time.
I found this on a site through Ask Jeeves...
Night Terror or Nightmare?:Nightmares occur during the dream phase of sleep known as REM sleep. Most people enter the REM stage of sleep sometime after 90 minutes of sleep. The circumstances of the nightmare will frighten the sleeper, who usually will wake up with a vivid memory of a long movie-like dream. Night terrors, on the other hand, occur during a phase of deep non-REM sleep usually within an hour after the subject goes to bed. This is also known as stage 4. (A link to a sleep stages chart can be found on the navigation bar to the left) During a night terror, which may last anywhere from five to twenty minutes, the person is still asleep, although the sleepers eyes may be open. When the subject does wake up, they usually have no recollection of the episode other than a sense of fear. This, however, is not always the case. Quite a few people interviewed can remember portions of the night terror, and some remember the whole thing.
I have to admit, I am 33 and I have night terrors, many times they scare the hell out of me, and I also have a physical reaction, I guess I am one of those who recall most or all of my "visions", it's very strange, while I'm in this state of sleep my subconcious realizes that am have a night terror, and tries to force me to wake up. It's hard to explain, they are not nightmares, I have nightmares as well, these are very different, most often when I am having a night terror I wake up with my head hurting so bad, and I have trouble even focusing or even trying to stand or walk for several minutes.
Well, i have experienced this before.. and it scares the living daylights out of you. Ever thought you where awake but totally paralised?? Freaky...... this is what i meen...
Narcolepsy With Cataplexy
Besides the presence of excessive sleepiness, which usually is the first symptom noted, the person suffering from narcolepsy may experience a sudden weakness of the muscles called cataplexy. A cataplectic attack is usually triggered by such emotions as laughter, anger, elation, or surprise. It may be experienced as partial muscle weakness lasting a few seconds or as almost complete loss of muscle control lasting for 1 to 2 minutes. During this period, the victim may be in a state of nearly total physical collapse, unable to move or speak, but still conscious and at least/ partially aware of activity in the immediate environment.
Sometimes, narcolepsy is misdiagnosed as epilepsy. But while epilepsy is often accompanied by loss of bladder and bowel control and tongue biting, narcolepsy is not. More often, the symptoms of narcolepsy are attributed to laziness, malingering, or psychiatric disorder. Job and home life usually suffer when narcolepsy goes untreated.
Narcolepsy, believed to be caused by a defect in the central nervous system, has no known cure. However, after proper diagnosis, the disorder can be effectively managed with drugs
I get bad night terror, or nightmare, just ask HAWK2K or DARKKNIGHT6. I get violent in them and in real life, even so far as holding weapons when I wake up. Which is why they are no longer within arms reach of me when I sleep.
I usually need sleeping pills to get me back to sleep after them. (Yes, allowed to do so by the advice of a MD) I still wake up in sweats, heart racing. They seem very real. They have come true at times, which makes them even more freaky, or I'll tell someone and then it happens to them. I don't know if that really makes them night terror then, but they are damn scary, making you feel as if you are there for real.
I believe there is a medical term for this, In medicine it is called, "sleep paralysis" and is very common during teenage years, you 20's and growing out of it eventually in your 30's. A bit frightening being lucid and unable to move, but be rest assured its not a life threatening condition.
Are you sure it's night terrors and not OBE
Out of body experience? Some people feel like their having terrible nightmares like someone is sitiing on their chest and attacking them, but really its your unconsiuos trying to get back in your body. Just a thought....
i myself do not have any nightmares anymore but wheni did as a young child i used to try and blink my eyes whilst in a dream this would instantly wake me up im not sure if this would help cos my mates say they have tried this and failed
I have night terrors.
I have had the same ones ever since I can remember; my mother told me I had them as an ifnat as well. While the intensity has not abated through the years, the frequency has (thank goodness).
I've tried so many things to make them not happen, or to make them not repeat after I've woken from one in the night; I now just stay up. They are the source of my insomnia *shrug* I'd rather be sleepless than have two in a night.
I do remember them; I've had them so many times, and I recognize them when they begin, but I am completely unable to wake myself. They are the one aspect of my dreams I have absolutely no control over.
Yes, I agree, I'd rather be awake all night then have several of them in a row. I hate being out of control.
Question on OBE.....can you be somewhere, fighting or talking to someone? I have terrors like that alot, and I think they are all in my head....but maybe they aren't really. If that makes any sense.
I hate dreaming like that.
Sleep paralysis and Night Terrors are not the same thing. I have had sleep paralysis all my life. I conquered my Nightmares at the age of 6.
It may sound silly, but I just refused to have them anymore. There was a recurring nightmare I was having... It started out in the basement of our church. I decided that the next time this dream started, and I was in the basement of the church, I would start pounding my head on the concrete floor until I woke up. Every night I went to bed with this thought.
About a week passed, and then the dream came. Immediately I started banging my head on the concrete and I snapped awake. Ever since that moment I have had complete control over my dreams.
There may be a better way to go about achieving the same result, but I was 6... And it worked.
i stop having night terrors when i was 8 or 10 i think ne ways the reason was unknown and since then i get strange dreams ones that dont even make sense like once i drempt sitting in my chair and then my cat talking to me (dont ask why) errrr......i get shivers just thiking about it
Well in the past I had had night terrors, I was an insomniac for sometime before that. Then i went to iraq and now it is bad. I dont sleep for about 3 days, then just fall a sleep, and have bad night terrors, my girlfriend has been extremely scared of me for days because of this.
Cancer that sounds pretty good....if I am in a dream where that would work I think
I'll give it a try. Mine just seem to be getting worse and worse. Ready to try anything that might work. Last time I brought this up to my MD she looked at me funny. Like any kind of dreaming is a bad thing. Sigh.
*the666inside* I hear that it has been normal for soldiers who are in or have just come from being in battle, or the like tend to have nightmares, visions, terrors and so on...I'm sure it's awful for you, and your girlfriend, have you tried to force your self to wake up? Sometimes, not sleeping can make them worse...
not sleeping does make it worse, i know its "normal". i have no choice in the matter of sleeping, either i sleep or i dont, my body will not be consistant.
the only other thing you can really do is talk to the base DR's I'm sure they have to deal with other men having the same problems, of course that may mean that they'd want you to see a phsycartist (here we go with the SP? again) but that's a judgement call you'ld have to make, wither you want it or not I'll keep you in my prayers, that things will get better for you, and that you'll be "home" soon...
My nephew was having nightmares. I went to the new age store here in town and bought a little bowl, bought a bunch of tumbled stones to put in it, then bought some lavender essential oil and told him to put a drop or two on a cotton ball every night and put it in the bowl and he wouldnt have nightmares anymore. He was convinced this was some big magic so whether it was the psychological expectation or the lavender oil actually does keep them away I dont know, but you could try the lavender pretty easy and see if it helps.
My experience with night terrors is not necassarily Profound however I have had few and had a former infantry roomate whome had them constantly.Hiss were very extreme and often had to deal with his past in service.
In night mares I do not know where they come from in infants but have heard that calm melodies may allow a child to sleep better and aleviate some if not all of the horrific eppisodes of the poor youth.
I hope that this will help some of youre problems.
well, ever heard a Dog have a nightmare.. man, only heard it once, and that was enough for me.. the most.. frightening sound ever.. that has stayed with me and will for the rest of my life... it's giving me goose pimples thinking about it... *shivers*
I have watched both one of my cats and a dog I had once, have nightmare/terrors, not sure wish, but it was awful to see and hear
Moreish, has wet dreams?? Maybe thats an unlying problem, Tena lady, is ment to be good! :oP
Nice try possum.. i'm not that old....*spanks your naughty bottom*
And for the record.. wet dreams are just as good for chicks >:)
Possum... hehe.. they are cute little creatures.. thanks for the compliment.. lol.. *harder please* .. i think i can only ever recall one of these elusive wet dreams, i was about 13... i think males only have them, if (how can i put this) erm.. they have not 'unloaded' in a while (7 days +), hence.. why soon as men find the use of it, on their own, these dreams rarely ever occur, but just thinking... I bet, a few monks sheets have to be changed alot. Have we any Monks here? or Asexuals? (men) let me know ... *grins*
Isn't it amazing the way I divert a thread to a naughty one?
My bad yet again
Apologies to no one *winks*
you are the goddess my dear, now what were we talking about, oh yeah, wet dreams, yep sure can be just as good for us littl'ole women folk...now wait, that wasn't the orginal topic *scratches head in bewilderment* can't remember, dang I need some sleep LOL
If you really can't sleep try this (it SOMETIMES works for me)
Go to bed an the usual routine then get in a comfortable position then close your eyes and picture the clearsest night sky you have ever seen then imagine your on a boat (don't force or try too hard to picture this or it won't work jus be relaxed) on this boat your in the middle of nowhetre its just you and the stars whilst the sea gently rocks the boat and your can hear the water lapping at the boat in a slow regular pace
Hope that helps any
I will, hope I don't get sea sick LOL no just kidding. I also lay there and just picture myself in a completely back room, I visualize it one wall at a time, then the floor and ceiling, and before I know it I'm out cold. But I think the boat and night sky would work too. Thank you... uhm sorry Tobias, didn't mean to take this off track again... back to you're orginal question about night terrors, well I guess I've already said my piece about that.. :^*
