As you know, everything evolves through out time. Slowly but surely everything evolves.
Evolving in ways as to become able to live in a certain environment better, build resistance to diseases, or physical appearances.
Now, there have been many reports of people being possessed by spirits and demons. People seeing ghosts, ghouls, and a whole host of supernatural creatuers and beings.
So, what if [in time] we built up resistances to being possessed? Or feeling the effects of fear from the 'black eyed folk'?
What if we evolved to a point where we could ourselves do what they [being the supernatural] are [supposedly] able to do?
Do you think that the supernatural in any way, shape, or form can affect or will affect our evolution in years to come?
I think that everything that we are exposed to affects our evolution in some way.
Look at antibiotics. People form resistance to them when they are abused.
People experience a sort of desensitization when they're exposed to things like graphic horror or pornography. More and more becomes acceptable.
I think that the paranormal or supernatural also is something that would desensitize you were you continuously exposed to it.
The clanging pans that first freaked you out? They wouldn't after a while.
Physically..if we are exposed to certain unpleasant stimuli repeatedly..our body finds ways of making it less unpleasant. It stands to reason that this would happen with reference to the supernatural.
I think its more in the way we think, and things that we have discovered that has led to less posession. And because I feel that the supernatural is natural,I think it will affect us a great deal as our knowledge evolves about the world in which we live.
For any agent to actually harm us it first has to exist. For evolution to occur, harm has to occur. The process of evolution thrives on harm. When a creature reaches a point where their environment or the things in their environment cease to present any great threat, their evolution slows to a crawl. Witness the alligator and the cockroach.
Before we can ponder whether or not supernatural contact is causing us to evolve, we have to see evidence that supernatural contact is harmful to us. So far as I'm aware, it has yet to be demonstrated that supernatural contact occurs or that the supernatural exists so we're several steps away from asking if it will, or does, help to steer the evolution of man.
If it does, then it should be much like the microbes which form an immunity to antibiotics. As the antibiotics sharply reduce the population of microbes, only those able to survive the onslaught of the antibiotics survive. They reproduce and pass this ability to their offspring. Eventually, new antibiotics must be sought or the microbes will reign supreme over humans. Either that or humans have to allow evolution to do what we now rely upon drugs to do, and develop our own immunity to the microbes. And since humans have the ability to evolve protection while drugs don't; to a base level, perhaps this is the better approach. The problem becomes the much faster generation-span of the microbes which allows them to evolve much faster than we can.
So if the supernatural is ever shown to exist, and if it's actually non-physical, then it shouldn't be evolving. Since man does evolve, it should lead to a point where we are virtually unaffected by the supernatural. I, of course, believe that day has always been at hand as I see no evidence of the supernatural or any contact with the supernatural. No harm, no need to evolve.

People used to believe in such things as possessions and etc. mainly because they didn't have the knowledge required to deal with things they didn't understand.
That and the church ruled their lives so everything had to do with god and angels and the devil and etc... and etc...
There is no evolving for a species to cope with things that never affected the species to begin with...
I think as humanity evolves, our need to beleive in the supernatural decreases. Look how religion is not as important/prevalent as it was 50 years ago. Not downing religion. Just calling it like I see it.
as others have said before me i think every experience we have and everything we are exposed to in some way affects evolution so i believe its a possible cause for the reduced number of possessions
Does anyone have any documented confirmation of even one verified case of possession?
If not, how can you have fewer than zero?
I think that however slowly, rationality is winning out over superstition. As we become more rational and begin to recognize that every claim of the supernatural is eventually explained via purely naturalistic means, we're less inclined to jump to conclusions of possession to explain certain behaviors. There was a time when epilepsy was strongly linked to supposed interaction with the supernatural. Today we know epilepsy is a neurological disorder so when we see a seizure, we don't jump to irrational conclusions.
Fewer irrational conclusions leads to fewer proclaimed cases of possession.
A survival advantage is the driving force behind maintaining mutations. If a mutation proves to be beneficial, then it provides a survival advantage to the species and is more likely to lead to reproduction. Those organisms which die or are killed before reproducing don't pass their genetic traits to offspring.
So before possession could lead to evolutionary changes, it would have to be beneficial to reproduction to avoid possession. And since evolution leads only to physical changes, the implication is that physical changes can ward off possession by supposed non-physical entities.
People that exploit the superstious beliefs of others (usually for profit, or amusement) adapt their craft as the old tricks are exposed. So the evolution is in solving things that once appeared to be (by performance, or by misperceived naturaly occuring events). However those with irrational fears, or the tendancy to want others to adopt irrational fears, press the old stories, and "studies" based on observations of tricks, hoaxes, and misperceived naturally occuring events. Yet some one always comes along and rehashes things that are exposed, that is the only evolution you will find. The adaptation to try to salvage irrational fear inducing things in others, retelling old wives tales, and surpressing those that speak for those that are exausted by supernatural minorities.
Things evolve, but they don't do so in a conscious or directed manner. Environmental conditions impact the success or failure of organisms based on a variety of factors - such as the advent of antibiotics giving rise to resistant strains of staph and other bacteria (because those without the resistance had been killed off).
However for anything "supernatural" to have an impact on evolution, it would need to create some tangible impact to the environment. I haven't seen evidence of anything remotely on that scale...
Beast said the supernatural would have to have a detrimental effect on humans.
There are more television series dealing with the supernatural than ever before. I enjoy the genre in general, and a few of these shows in particular.
But I don't look to them as proof that the supernatural exists. I fear that many viewers want the easy answers that "something" is out there, in much the same way that others turn to religion.
Belief in the supernatural seems like a religion to me, especially when the believers close off all other avenues of thought to find answers.
If television is the manna of the masses, and especially as we enter unsure economic times, my fear is that this belief in the supernatural will be used to brainwash the citizenry more than we already are.
Watch these programs, but listen to the message.
I believe as Humanity evolves and so does its science what we can supernatural will change and evolve. Some things that are supernatural now will be studied and be found to be natural when examined with the correct tools and methods.
evolution is just supernatural explained. just putting that in there. (my 2 cents)
Correction on my previous post: Beast said the supernatural would have to have a detrimental effect on humans --- for evolution to have an effect.
I don't think they will have a huge effect on the evolution of humans... I do feel there will be certain things that humans will be relieved of though. I think eventually we will stop the fear of it but I think it will be from understanding more than anything.
As for other things I'm not sure and I don't have a stand on but it would be awesome if we evolved to have certain abilities the ghostly do!!
Like Beastt said - in order for it to have any affect on human development or evolution, the thing in question first has to exist.
Bad Alice, the we-don't-use-10%-of-our-brain thing is expired, if their is a 10% people don't activate I would lean in the direction of the areas that lie "dormant/atrophied" being creativity, and imagination.. things that are originated from metaphoric origins have become beliefs. That is a sort of evolution, people that want super natural comfort, or something irrational that fixes in their mind, People don't want to admit that they where scared by something pshyical (actual), they want people to believe they witnessed a ghost. Social skills actually suffer from fringe belief. Blood Mother, Thank you for your post, that is well stated.
There is another trait belief in the super natural shares with religion, and that is in the Heaven our Hell area, it is not Heaven or hell in the super natural/occult, it is Closed Mind or Open Minded.
People that are entertained by things that appear/are performed, as super natural are really cheated by those that drag them into beliefs, and clinical claims. if anything the occult has devolved, into one time actually performing feats most mysterious... to claiming to be able to perform super natural abilities.
I only believe in the evolution of the mind (not the body). The human body building up a resistance to a thing is not evolution, it's the immune system doing what it is supposed to do.
I do believe in demons and/or spirits. I cannot prove to anyone that they exsist, but I cannot prove that I love my mother either.
I think that as the human race continues to evolve we will build up a imunity to the supernatural just like we've build up an imunity to most diseases.
So much of the supernatural is unexplained and not proven that I don't see us evolving in those concerns when there isn't much concrete about it. Our attitudes and concepts perhaps but physically no.
Humans are most definitely evolving - you want examples??? :-)
I certainly think the supernatural has affected our social evolution.
Think about it, way back when the celts were fully aware of the supernatural they worked with it not against it.
Then when Christianity came along the supernatural was labeled as taboo and evil. Our ability to see the spirit world was greatly hindered by this. And how could it not be? People were killed for being witches and embracing these abilities.
So, do I think it will get to a point where we will be like the spirit world itself? Highly unlikely, I wouldn't expect it to happen.
I guess it depends on what you call "supernatural" - some Christians would call God and Angels "supernatural"... so I don't know that they're "working against it" if you take my meaning...
Social evolution is also a hugely different kettle of fish than biological evolution. Social evolution only requires a belief system and how that system interacts with other cultures.
i completely agree that as the human race continues to evolve we will build up a imunity to the supernatural just like we've build up an imunity to most diseases.
I am not sure I would concider it building an immunity as much as losing a sense. When we are younger are mind is more active, it is open to the "supernatural" as you will. But as we get older we are trained to believe that this and that are not real. That they do not exist. So we close the pathways in our mind that let us see and hear those things. Now that might be a mental evolutionary step for the human race. Then again it might not. The mind and preception is a constantly fluid and often trickly thing.
But thinking logically in the SuperNatural world. I doubt one could become immunte to the Bite of a Werewolf or Vampire. Just and example. >;]
I think that those that craft such things will evolve in their complexity, and design. Holographs will boom the industry/occult field.
lets say we did involve to that capacity. perhaps it wouldnt be supernatural anymore. it very well may be testable and with new technology that far down the road it would be harnessed and proven making what we know as supernatural to just "natural"
i believe that anything that we have contact with can of course effect our future of evolving
The problem is the difference between the "Natural" and the "Supernatural". And this is where preception plays its tricky tune. What is one to one group is different to another. Science can be deemed "Supernatural" aswell. Depending on the personal preception of the beliefs of the people involved.
Evolution is a constant and natural evelopement to ones enviroment over a period of hundreds of years. I not longer. So unless the "Supernatural" was a constent force in the enviroment of a particular group of people with steady maintained affects over the course of generations, it would seem unlikely that our bodies or minds would develope any kind of immunity or defence against it.
And again this is all determined by what one conciders "Supernatural" ect, ect, ect.
I don't think that the supernatural will affect us all that much, if at all. Not everyone is able to feel, see, or hear when something that is supernatural is around. So it won't really affect those who can't already. But I have noticed that more and more people are able to feel/see/hear the supernatural. Maybe they will become almost equals to us.
Those that claim such things, yet things that they claim to be demonstratible are constantly being exposed as they are observed from more then one angle.. so the adaptation of those performances rehash the old claims, now though more people make claims to abilities then their are performers. So the fact that people are getting wise to the parlor tricks, and special effects. Is creating a challenge to the Occult, and para/surer natural Industry.
Getting slightly back to the topic.
I have long believed that as the human race grows and develops so does our intellect and psyche.
I think there is a strong possibility that as we develop and grow, becoming possessed or bothered by the supernatural will become less a problem. I think this is because our minds are opening to the possibilities and making us more aware of the multi-layered world around us.
i do think if the supernatural did effect our evolution then it is possible that in our evolving as humans we would pick up characteristics that were of supernatural be it a seen or unseen characteristic.
