The original question:

"Can it matter for the soul what happen with your body when you die?

I have started to wonder if the way you choose to do after you die will affect the afterlife? Some be burried as they are , some be burned to ash and burried and some get the ash spreaded with the wind. Do you think it will matter for your soul what be done with the died host?"

I had asked Beastt what his definition of a soul was.

Soul = myth

There is simply no evidence to suggest that people (or any other biological being), can retain consciousness after the death of their body.

You have not given a definition. Soul does not equal myth. A myth has its own definition.

You are asking for evidence for something that you can not define. Yet again, we have a horrible case of mistranslation which leads to misinformed arguments such as these.

So, I ask again, what is your definition of a soul?

Well, this is nearly a cut and paste from my first entry in this thread but I'll continue to humor the inquiry.

Soul; n. Any entity via which a person may retain consciousness after the death of their body.

I think they are saying that the soul is not a physical thing... That it is something we have associated so as to make death easier for us to handle.

Personally I agree with Beastt.... Personally the way you die doesn't reflect on your afterlife. Now if you are remaining on earth for some reason then there may be a tie there but that would be the only reason your afterlife would be predefined.

*This is a personal opinion...

And therein lies the problem. It is an erroneous definition.

The Hebrew word, similar to the Greek translation, referred to not just the consciousness. It is not a separate appendage (or entity). It refers to the breath of life, activity of the will, appetites, emotions, etc. The soul, by definition, is the essence of life. That essence of life is the total accumulation of the energy of the universe. The essence of life in animals primarily resides in the brain.

This is not a "blind assertion". This is a result of a proper translation of the Hebrew word for soul - "nephesh". The equivalent Greek word is "psuche". Both words carry the same intent.

From where does one get the idea that the Hebrews developed the idea of a soul? What makes them the experts on what a soul is or isn't?

The soul is a concept which pre-dates Judaism, pre-dates Christianity, pre-dates Hinduism and all indications accounted for, pre-dates recorded human history. Assigning it to a Hebrew definition seems incredibly biased.

Most people today talk about the soul as themselves in a non-physical form. But whether one asserts it to be physical or non-physical, there remains no objective evidence that any such thing exists.

And to try to twist it to fit a single definition in accordance with one's preferred agenda, is not unlike asserting that the intentional mystical delivery of "bad luck" is a curse but not a spell or the will of a witch-doctor. One can claim a curse is cast via the breaking of a mirror or the crossing of paths with a black cat. It doesn't change the basic concept.

Different belief systems have a long history of adopting pre-existing concepts and distorting them to fit a particular agenda. There is nothing to suggest that the Hebrews are any less guilty of this than any other theological group. But the basic concept arose from very primitive ancient cultures and has never offered any objective evidence of being in accordance with reality. That many different theological groups have adopted the idea and morphed it to fit their particular agendas does nothing to change the basic concept or to evade the fact that there remains no objective evidence to support the concept.

It is the follow-up that once a person accepts that a soul exist, that is seldom enough, next is the pressure to believe that their are those that can interface with that soul, and how common is that person some ordained person that is more soul concious then the others that accept their specific definition of the soul. So what are you investing your soul (real or not) in?

According to websters dictionary the soul is a spiritual part of a human being; person.

I do not mean to step on anyones toes here but to say that the soul is a myth would be saying that the human being was a myth. You can not have one with out the other in my opinion. The soul is what guides us, the essence of who and what we are.

I don't have any web sites or any scientific research to back what I am saying here. Its just what one feels or what one knows within their heart.

From where does one get the idea that the Hebrews developed the idea of a soul? What makes them the experts on what a soul is or isn't?

I didn't say they created the concept of the soul. However, our translation of the word "soul", from old English "sawol" meaning "wind" or "air", is predated by Hebrew and unless you have a document which predates the Old Testament, I think that the definition that I chose is a bit more dependable than one that you've simply made up through - as you would say - blind assertion.

The soul is a concept which pre-dates Judaism, pre-dates Christianity, pre-dates Hinduism and all indications accounted for, pre-dates recorded human history. Assigning it to a Hebrew definition seems incredibly biased.

I'm sorry, can you explain how we have evidence of a concept which pre-dates recorded human history? There has to be some form of record in order to prove that the concept existed. I can provide an example - The Emerald Tablet - Egyptian in origin pre-dating the Old Testament, and talks about the soul in a similar manner as the Hebrew word which I have provided.

Most people today talk about the soul as themselves in a non-physical form. But whether one asserts it to be physical or non-physical, there remains no objective evidence that any such thing exists.

I've explained what a soul is and you yourself have provided evidence of the physical manifestation of that concept. To say that there is no objective evidence at this point is to cling to an argument that is failing.

So we shouldn't twist the supported definition that I have given to fit your proposed definition? You also have a preferred agenda - that being to disprove the existence of a soul.

Humans are painfully evident. There is no rational assertion which can be made to suggest that we do not exist.

The soul is something else entirely. Humans are biological - physical, limited and finite. The soul is but a claim that the biological, physical human has a counter-part which is very unlike the corresponding human, yet still the essence of that human in some form which seems to defy definition.

Humans are not a myth. But there is no evidence to suggest that the soul is anything but a myth. One could assert that humans have two souls, a soul of good and a soul of evil. Or numerous souls, one of lust, one of greed, one of compassion, one of love, etc., etc., etc.

The only evidenced portion is the biological human. All of the rest are but popular assertions, backed by nothing, and therefore, qualify as myth.

Yes, one could assert this but then that one person would be missing the mark of the definition.

Take for example the human body: The human body is made up of multiple organs, but those organs are not made up of the human body. Likewise, you can have compassion, love, greed, etc. which can combine to make up the soul, but those individual things, or organs of the soul, are not made up of the soul.

Re: "unless you have a document which predates the Old Testament, I think that the definition that I chose is a bit more dependable than one that you've simply made up through - as you would say - blind assertion."

Scholars tend to agree that the Old Testament was composed between the 12th and 2nd century BC. The earliest Sumerian version of The Epic of Gilgamesh is dated to 2150 - 2000 BC. And yet the Epic of Gilgamesh is essentially the Noah's Flood story of the Old Testament. And the Christian concept of the soul is dramatically different from the definition you have chosen only because it suits your beliefs and your agenda.

My definition is not a blind-assertion. It is quite well evidenced. Need I comb back through the threads to gather all of the assertions claiming the soul to be non-physical? Should I collect all of the assertions which show the standard concept to be other than what you present through your selected definition? Or are you willing to simply admit to the fact that hordes of evidence for other concepts of the soul, which are decidedly contrary to the definition you have chosen and well encompassed by my definition; do exist, are more popular, and therefore, more frequently asserted?

I don't believe that souls exist; either by your definition or the non-physical definitions. There is zero objective evidence to support either idea. I've asked repeatedly for evidence, and the most I've received is assertions that the body produces and is maintained through energy. Energy is just energy. There is no objective evidence that it is anything but what contemporary physicists claim it to be.
---

Re: "...can you explain how we have evidence of a concept which pre-dates recorded human history?"

Archaeology.

Ancient burial sites provide evidence of ritualistic practices, special arrangements of the body, religious adherence to processing of the body and the very significant inclusion of one's most valued possessions along with the body upon burial. If one believes that a person dies and ceases to exist, then obviously, they would feel no need to supply them with food, weapons, jewelry or any of the many other valuables found buried with the bodies.
---

Re: "I've explained what a soul is and you yourself have provided evidence of the physical manifestation of that concept."

You have only picked one definition from many various definitions which exist and then asserted that your definition is the "correct" one. People hold many varying concepts of the soul and none of them have any less credible evidence than does yours.

And please allow me to challenge you on your assertion that I have provided evidence of the physical manifestation of a soul. I believe you are gravely mistaken. Where and how have I provided what you claim?
---

Re: "So we shouldn't twist the supported definition that I have given to fit your proposed definition?"

Your definition is supported by nothing but assertion. Writing an assertion down in an unverified document provides it with no greater veracity than if it isn't written down. You've simply chosen a definition you prefer, ignored the fact that it is highly contrary to most of the concepts of the soul as presented by others involved in the discussion (as well as the many such discussions on religious forums in which I have participated), and then asserted that your definition is correct, and all others are less correct. When the very concept debated remains not just unverified, but purely unevidenced, one should be very careful about asserting that any one definition is less correct than any other.

Allow me an analogy. Dark matter is asserted to exist because there is evidence that it exists. However, were that evidence not present or undiscovered, and people still wished to assert that "dark matter" existed, what would provide one definition with greater validity than any other definition?
---

Re: "You also have a preferred agenda - that being to disprove the existence of a soul."

I disbelieve that souls exist, by any definition provided or demonstrated so far. I also believe that adherence to unevidenced assertions is harmful to human intellect. However, I have no more need to "disprove" the existence of a soul, than you have to disprove the existence of 12-ton, sentient, purple dust-bunnies. Until you provide some supporting evidence, there is no call to demonstrate your conclusions to be false. You're attempting to shift what is often called "burden of proof", but should really be called "burden of evidence". You have no objective evidence, despite claiming that I've somehow presented such evidence. Until you have evidence to support your assertion, there is nothing to "disprove".

If you can understand that you have no need to disprove the idea that Earth actually has two moons, but one is invisible, then perhaps you can understand why no one need disprove a concept like souls, which are completely devoid of credible supporting evidence. That which is devoid of credible supporting evidence is nothing but a statement -- most likely, a statement of fiction. Until support is provided for the statement, there is no need to refute that statement.

To once again analogize, if you were to assert that all space is filled with non-physical cabbage-patch likenesses, no one need attempt to disprove the assertion until you have first provided some credible evidence to support your assertion.

Why does there have to be proof for people to believe in something? people thought black holes existed before 1971 didn't they? And turns out they are real! just because there is no scientific proof to back something up does not make it untrue or fictitious. Something makes us think the way we think. no 2 people are ever alike! What makes them individual? And yes beast I know you are going to pick apart my post. And I'm sorry beast but no, the meat in peoples heads is not ehat makes them unique. there is much more to people than a brain and body.

The original has now closed...again lol...so here we go.

Thought I'd post this again here.

Personally I don't think that some of the comparisons used to demonstrate a point on this thread were necessary, at best they move things off topic and at worst imply insult.

However having read everything that has been written and even with my very little understanding of science I would have to agree with those who say there is no scientific evidence regarding souls.

That said, what if there was ? How would that affect what we know as free will ?

Is there a case even for saying that no scientific evidence will ever be found, for if it was what many regard as being crucial to their relationship with their God/Gods would be compromised ?

Re: "Why does there have to be proof for people to believe in something?"

No one has asked for "proof". This has been explained to you numerous times. I'm lead to suspect that you read very little of what I offer. Do you not understand the difference between "proof" (an impossible standard having no value in discussion), and "evidence" (objective evidence indicating likelihood)?
---

Re: "people thought black holes existed before 1971 didn't they?"

Einstein's calculations indicated that black holes should exist. The premise is simple. For any given gravitational field, there is a minimum speed which is required to escape that gravitational field. This is known as an "escape velocity". The escape velocity for Earth is about 6.95 miles per second (25,000 miles per hour or 11.2 Km/s). Jupiter has far more mass and therefore, a stronger gravitational field. So the escape velocity for Jupiter is about 36.9 miles per second (59.5 Km/s). As the mass of a body grows, so does the strength of the gravitational field and thusly, the escape velocity.

When the escape velocity exceeds the speed of light, even light is unable to escape the gravitational field. At this point, you have a black hole.

So we have a mathematical "proof" (note the proper use of the word for mathematics or alcohol), that black holes should exist. And despite this proof, Einstein made the error of appealing to his subjective belief (subjective belief is what people appeal to when they subscribe to a belief without evidence, or contrary to the evidence), and suggested that there was likely some, as yet unknown, factor which prevented black holes from actually forming. And as is predictable when people appeal to subjective beliefs, he was wrong.
---

Re: "and turns out they are real!"

Of course. The evidence -- the mathematical proof concluded that they would be real and they are.
---

Re: "just because there is no scientific proof to back something up does not make it untrue or fictitious"

Again, the evidence shows that you read very little of what I write. The term "scientific proof" is an oxy-moron. That means, you're utilizing two terms which contradict each other. Science does not operate on proofs (aside from mathematics), does not require proof nor does it produce proof. It operates on evidence and produces conclusions based on evidence. "Proof" (aside from mathematical proofs), plays no part in science.

The problem with the idea of souls is that there isn't even a shred of objective evidence to support the concept. Not one objective thing to offer even partial support to the idea of souls. And one must remember that we live in a time when evidence can be found for even minuscule particles, so small they could become eternally lost within the mass of an atom. And yet objective evidence indicated that they should exist, and 26-years later, they were confirmed to exist.

People have been proclaiming that souls exist for tens of thousands of years, and yet not a single shred of objective evidence has ever been provided to support the idea that souls are real.
---

Re: "Something makes us think the way we think."

This is very true. We're animals (mammals, primates and apes). We need to exist within an environment every bit as much as does any other animal. And one of the things that assists a developed species to survive is the ability to find patterns. If your friend is bitten by a faded-looking, brownish snake which makes a buzzing sound and he dies, then your sibling is bitten by a similarly described snake and they die, it's beneficial for us to note the pattern. It helps us realize we should avoid contact with faded-looking brownish snakes which make buzzing sounds.

The problem is that we can mix our emotional responses with these patterns and emerge with a vast array of false patterns (superstitions). A study was conducted to research this principle using pigeons. The birds were placed in a small cage which had three large buttons on one side, just above a feed tray. If the bird pecked the right button the right number of times, a treat was released into the tray.

Then the device was adjusted so that the treat would simply fall randomly. It was noted that one of the birds, having pecked at the buttons without receiving a treat, glanced back over the left shoulder at the moment that the device coincidentally dropped a treat into the tray. Some minutes later the bird again glanced over it's left shoulder and this again coincided with the random release of a treat. The bird believed it had found a pattern and became rather manic at glancing over the left shoulder. This kind of behavior is what we call "superstition". When superstition becomes mixed with emotion, the conclusions become even more erroneous and more convoluted.
---

Re: "no 2 people are ever alike!"
Of course not. Are you familiar with the relative size of a molecule? If not, hopefully, you're at least semi-familiar with the absolute minuscule dimensions of a single cell. Within a cell (most cells), is a small portion known as the nucleus. And within that nucleus is a single molecule known as DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). If you could grab this microscopic, tiny bit of matter and stretch it out, it would be about 3-feet in length. Try to imagine how many atoms are required to make a chain 3-feet long. This molecule contains all of the information necessary to create a human body. It would be almost unthinkable that any two DNA strands would be alike. Therefore, no two people are alike.
---

Re: "there is much more to people than a brain and body. "

This is but a blind-assertion, developed to feed your emotional desire to believe that you are more than the sum of your parts. But there exists zero evidence to support such an idea. It's no more supported than to suggest that a car is more than the sum of its parts.

Playing devil's advocate, Beast, but I would like to offer this and I apologize for paraphrasing. :)

"There is simply no evidence to suggest that people (or any other biological being), do not retain consciousness after the death of their body."

That is why people fall back on beliefs, as there is no evidence as of yet to support the claim either way.

Re: "That is why people fall back on beliefs, as there is no evidence as of yet to support the claim either way. "

I appreciate the thought but one has to try to maintain an objective view. If one's great, great, great, great, great grandfather believed in Leprechauns, and that belief had been passed down through generations, at what point do you decide that no evidence has been found because no evidence exists and that no evidence exists because Leprechauns don't exist?

If you think about it, most people don't believe in unicorns, mermaids, gremlins, goblins, zombies, etc., for just one reason -- the complete lack of any objective evidence. But people hold no personal stake in the existence of these things nor do they hold any emotional stake in them. When you add the personal/emotional bet which is on the line, it simply becomes too tempting for people to believe in what would otherwise be considered completely unbelievable. People don't want to cease to exist so they construct completely unevidenced concepts which allow them to believe they'll never cease to exist. It's a psychological safety net, nothing more.

Well, to your point, everything we know starts in the "lack of evidence" stage.

And to answer your question, to what point do we stop believing? Well, it depends on the item in question, but usually, there is an overwhelming general consensus that something doesn't exist.

In your example, Leprechauns. In my observations, there has been overwhelming consensus they do not exist.

However, I have not observed that there is an overwhelming consensus regarding the existence of souls, it appears to be split down the middle. In cases where things are evenly divided, those cases remain open and debated. :)

Re:
Scholars tend to agree that the Old Testament was composed between the 12th and 2nd century BC. The earliest Sumerian version of The Epic of Gilgamesh is dated to 2150 - 2000 BC. And yet the Epic of Gilgamesh is essentially the Noah's Flood story of the Old Testament. And the Christian concept of the soul is dramatically different from the definition you have chosen only because it suits your beliefs and your agenda.

The Epic of Gilgamesh hails from ancient Mesopotamia, originating in the Land of Ur, or as the tail puts it Uruk. Ur is the birthplace of Abraham, from which we get the three Abrahamic religions – Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. It stands to reason that the Noah’s Flood story is similar, or better yet the very same. As a slight correction, the Epic itself is not the story of the Great Flood even though the flood plays a key role in the story. That notwithstanding, the concept of the soul is not prevalent in this work. Gilgamesh’s search for immortal life is there, but it is a search for a continuation of the life of his body, not his soul. Even when Ishtar threatens to open the gates of Hell, there is no reference to human souls – she says that the dead will overtake the living. There is no reference to their individual consciousness or essence of life. Because they’re dead.

Re:
My definition is not a blind-assertion. It is quite well evidenced. Need I comb back through the threads to gather all of the assertions claiming the soul to be non-physical? Should I collect all of the assertions which show the standard concept to be other than what you present through your selected definition? Or are you willing to simply admit to the fact that hordes of evidence for other concepts of the soul, which are decidedly contrary to the definition you have chosen and well encompassed by my definition; do exist, are more popular, and therefore, more frequently asserted?

My selected definition is through proper translation and history of the word, one that Christians evolved their definition from.

But let’s look at other options.

Plato and Aristotle both asserted what I have also said, with a logical progression of thought. How about Avicenna, a Muslim, who made the distinction between a soul and a spirit. The spirit, by his definition, is what you have been concentrating on, and to which I will agree there is no scientific evidence.

Christianity teaches that the soul, as part of the human, is resurrected on Judgment day, and humans will achieve everlasting life – their bodies included. Obviously, no current scientific evidence exists to prove the coming of Judgment day. The concept of a soul, however, is directly related to corporeal life – not death. I don’t find this to be dramatically different from the definition I have given.

Buddhism teaches that the consciousness of the individual, or the self, cannot reside outside of the body. Hindus have two different words whose concepts are most closely related to the definition of the soul. It is eerily similar to Avicenna’s distinction of the two. One word refers to what Avicenna would have dubbed the soul, and the other refers to what he would have referred to as the spirit.

Re:
And please allow me to challenge you on your assertion that I have provided evidence of the physical manifestation of a soul. I believe you are gravely mistaken. Where and how have I provided what you claim?

By the definition of the word, and the concept behind it, you have provided evidence and proof of the essence of life, energy. You acknowledge that a creature can have a consciousness and you support the concept of energy production which ultimately leads to this consciousness. The culmination of energies which create life leading to an individual consciousness were explained by you when you described the process of energy production in the body – ADP and ATP, remember? That’s Biology 101, the study of life.

Re:
Your definition is supported by nothing but assertion. Writing an assertion down in an unverified document provides it with no greater veracity than if it isn't written down. You've simply chosen a definition you prefer, ignored the fact that it is highly contrary to most of the concepts of the soul as presented by others involved in the discussion (as well as the many such discussions on religious forums in which I have participated), and then asserted that your definition is correct, and all others are less correct. When the very concept debated remains not just unverified, but purely unevidenced, one should be very careful about asserting that any one definition is less correct than any other.

If you review the posts, I’m sure you will note that many people equate the soul and the spirit, whereas others have made the distinction between the two. There are also a couple of people in the previous posts who regard the soul as the essence of life, and used those words. So I am supported by modern beliefs, as well as ancient ones, that the definition I have provided is quite sufficient and accurate – not simply one I alone prefer or improperly assert.

Re:

If I was trying to shift the “burden of proof”, my request would have been phrased thus: Prove to me the inexistence of the soul.

You may have no need to disprove it, but your second statement alludes to your agenda to do so. “I believe that adherence to unevidenced assertions is harmful to human intellect”. If you can disprove the existence of a soul, which you claim to not believe in, then you are able to provide light to those who are harming human intellect and correct the situation. If you had no agenda, then you would not have gotten involved in this thread.

I don't believe that souls exist; either by your definition or the non-physical definitions. There is zero objective evidence to support either idea.

This is the part that I do not undertand. There might not be any proof that the soul does exist. But can you show me any proof that says that the sould does not exist??
The soul exists for those that belive in it and it does not exist to those that do not belive in it. So why all the fuss when it can be left at that.

The entire proposition is the classic fallacy Ad Populum, wherein it is assumed that the popularity of an idea, is somehow connected to the validity of the idea.

How many times has this fallacy been demonstrated throughout history? Nearly everyone used to believe that the Earth was flat. Nearly everyone used to believe that the sun revolved around the Earth. What the heck could Copernicus, Galileo or Magellan know with their petty objective evidence?

Reality simply doesn't work that way. Consensus of opinion/belief means nothing. Objective evidence means everything. Go to almost any country and you'll find the majority of the population subscribes to a single theistic belief. Religion is highly demographic. And yet, as you move from one region to another, the popular beliefs change and even contradict each other. Popular opinion holds no bearing on reality.

And while it's true that we always start in the lack of evidence stage, never do we go from subjective assertion to evidence to confirmation. Can you think of a single time when this has occurred? This is what would have to happen for souls to actually exist and be found to exit.

The soul is an imaginative human construct designed to allow the belief that we needn't cease to exist. It's primitive, ancient and after tens of thousands of years, offers absolutely nothing more than it did when first suggested. Think of how far science has come in the mere 400 - 500 years since the method was refined. And for much of that 400 - 500 years, people have continually attempted to utilize science (as well as other methods), to locate some indication -- some tiny shred of evidence - to support the idea of souls. And yet, today we have no more evidence to support the idea than was had when the concept was first formed.

Re: "But can you show me any proof that says that the sould does not exist?"

Again, there is no evidence for the non-existence of anything that does not exist. That's part of not existing -- not leaving any kind of evidence that you do or that you don't.

In every other aspect of human belief, the complete lack of supporting evidence is sufficient to conclude non-existence. This is the case with the Easter Bunny, fairies, mermaids, gremlins, zombies, unicorns, etc. We disbelieve that these things exist for one reason -- a complete lack of evidence showing that they do exist. Note that there is no evidence indicating that these things don't exist.

But when it comes to souls, there is potential for gain in the eyes of the believe. So a double-standard is employed to accommodate belief. One suddenly wants to turn the tables and ignore the obvious by proclaiming that no evidence exists to demonstrate non-existence. Again; that is the earmark of non-existence -- no evidence.

Here is where I have the problem with your assertations. The reality for is not always the same for antoher. My reality is that there is a soul that is part of our human form and that it is here because it is needed to guide us and learn.
There was a post awhile back about soul weight, I think it was posted by Livingdeadgirl. But I might be wrong. There were links that proved the dissappearance of the weight. And yes there were some that proved other wise. My point is that what one belives is what they hold true to their heart and no one can judge the other for their belief.

Unfortunately Cheetah - the weight loss at time of death is inconclusive, and I would wager that the weight loss is due more to evaporation than soul weight. I had provided a snopes link earlier which suggests the same thing.

Well, the plausibility of a 6 foot talking rabbit is a bit more easy to dismiss than something more complex and abstract as a "soul". One can be assumptive in the regards to unicorns and other less abstract items.

I don't have any influence what the general consensus does, but unfortunately, it does tend to dictate our beliefs.

Whether or not it is defined as "reality" is not relevant, general consensus tends to dictate to people what is real.

What purpose does it serve those that believe in souls, to have others accept their beliefs? Are your beliefs in any way effected by the disbelief of others. What response are those that believe expecting from those that don't believe. Do those that believe souls exist, think that those that don't are somehow damaging the status quo? I have walked many paths, and considered both philosophy, and religions. Do those that press their version of what a soul is, think that those that don't lack any assurance for their final moments?

See once a person accepts/believes in some concept, the ones that ask questions of people that don't believe like they do.. are they stable in their beliefs, I would think not.. Once you believe there are still questions.. correct? There are still people that have expanded beliefs for you to consider. Great you accept the existence of a soul.. "Surly you believe that (so and so, and such and such) can manipulate, or generally interact with that soul. That your soul can be photographed, 1,000 dollars please..

Re: "Well, the plausibility of a 6 foot talking rabbit is a bit more easy to dismiss than something more complex and abstract as a "soul"."

Is it?

I disagree. I think it's simply more common. It's something most of us have grown up with and was accepted from a time before we had established sufficient experience with reality to form logical thought. I grew up with the concept and never really applied any critical thought to the assertion until I was 33-years old. That's when it all started falling apart. I left bias behind and without bias, such beliefs cannot be maintained.

We know that rabbits exist and even that some become quite large. So why is a 6-foot rabbit more implausible than an entity which isn't, or provides nothing upon which to base belief in its existence? Do you know of any non-physical entities? Do you know of any physical yet unevidenced sentient beings?

Humans can talk. Many species of parrots can talk. Sure it's a bit of a stretch that a rabbit would be able to speak but not nearly such a stretch as the idea that a person isn't a biological entity but a non-physical (or physical but unevidenced), entity which only occupies a physical biological body for a time, then continues to exist without that body.

We have examples of large animals and animals that can talk. There are even gorillas which carry on conversations (usually about food), with their trainers and handlers using a modified version of ASL. So a 6-foot talking rabbit, while not terribly probable, is certainly more plausible than an entity that exists at a realm never shown to exist, which is a person, and yet not a person, occupying no body, and yet maintaining the consciousness provided by the body.

I believe you're confusing what is commonly accepted for being that which is plausible. The soul is by far, a less plausible construct than a 6-foot talking rabbit.

Oddly, my youngest brother ( He Has Down Syndrome) Believed/Reasoned, that Cartoon Characters on TV where people in suits. He likely reasoned this because he saw a person at an event, or theme park in a costume.. freaked out (as children do) and was told ." It is just a person." Then the head was removed, and the proof was shown to him, he reasoned that the same carried to the TV presentation as well. we can study the flaw of thinking.

Re: "The reality for is not always the same for antoher."

Well, this is simply untrue. There is one reality -- just one. If the Earth is hit by a 20-mile wide asteroid, everyone on Earth will have one last moment of a shared reality. We don't get our own realities, despite certain relative aspects to a singular reality.

Simply believing differently doesn't make things different. In the old child's tale, this is stated; "thinking doesn't make things so". Reality has never changed to accommodate anyone's beliefs. It just doesn't work that way.

There is one reality. We can choose to learn about that reality or we can choose to live a lie and continually twist, distort and ignore the evidence in a futile attempt to maintain our fallacious depiction of reality. But reality will not budge for you, for me or for the whole of life in the universe. It simply, is.

Re: "Well if I'm ever contacted in church or out of it by a 6 foot talking rabbit I will be sure to let you all know."

I'm not sure if the intent is to simply be unfair or if the concept of logical, rational thought is simply so lost after years of adherence to irrational beliefs that it lies beyond the grasp of some.

- Animals are not implausible.

- Large animals are not implausible.

- Animals which speak are not implausible.

In fact, we have examples of all of these things.

---

- We have no examples of consciousness without a biological body.

- We have no examples of disembodied persons.

- We have no examples of life without biology.

---

What is or isn't plausible isn't left to subjective assertion. It is a logical construct. One can ignore the logic or respond illogically. But if one adheres to logic, there is no question that a 6-foot talking rabbit is orders of magnitude less implausible than the existence of a soul.

Well Beastt17, as you know, you have asked for evidence of a soul/spirit, I have stated before that men and women attend spiritualist churches all over the world.

Here in the Uk we have trained mediums whose function it is to give evidence of survival....and as a matter of fact....animals have indeed been described...though none as big or fluffy as your bunny.

Well, if you add alcohol or drugs, the plausibility of the bunny's existence increases exponentially.

However, the plausibly of things yet undiscovered would be far greater. Shakespeare said it rather poetically, "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

Biological entities are confirmed to exist.

Mammals are confirmed to exist.

Rodents are confirmed to exist.

Rabbits are confirmed to exist.

Animals with the ability to speak are confirmed to exist

---

The supernatural has never been confirmed to exist.

Sentience devoid of biological support has never been confirmed to exist.

Humans have never been confirmed to exist beyond death.

Souls have never been confirmed to exist.

---

You simply have no argument. That's why rather than presenting one, you persist with your comment regarding meeting a 6-foot rabbit in church. You've never met a soul in church either, whether you believe you have, or not.

I'm not suggesting that 6-foot talking rabbits exist. Indeed, there is no objective evidence that they do. But they present far less of a leap than does any supernatural or paranormal entity.

String theory has not yet been conformed to exist either, but many scientists "believe" it does. In physics, there are rules to govern big things, and rules to govern small things. Yet there is nothing to tie them together. Yet. And we've been searching for that "tie in" for a long time.

You have no argument regarding the abstract, simply because there has not been evidence to it's existence yet does not mean it does not exist. Length of the search is not relevant, evidence may be found in the near future, we simply do not know.

Again, all we're left with is what we "believe", plain and simple.

No Beastt17 I did'nt actually think you meant the bit about the 6 foot bunny.....well I was hoping you were'nt anyway...so lets forget him for a mo.

As you do not believe ( for all of the reasons given ) that a soul does not exist that's fine I don't have a problem with that at all.

However I think it does...spirit/soul ...call it what you will, and accept it or not communication between people on this side of life and the other happens, in my church and out of it....that is a fact.

However getting back to the original question should perhaps be a priority....it is not my desire to bore people with my beliefs....which as far as I am concerned are based on evidence.

I would take the soul as a metaphysical concept. With poets it is more an established metaphor. What a person invest in the concept, and what they accept as "evidence" should be enough for them. However when a person scrutinizes that "evidence" they present. How do they expect people to react, to their "evidence"? To just accept it? Then to accept every other thing attached to that belief. Do the questions stop, when you accept something as a belief, I can imagine better things then people believe, does that make me a "holy man, am I more secure in dying? Perhaps when we stop questioning our beliefs at the expense of others belief/or lack of belief, we are settled and ready to confront death.

Beast, I'd assume by objective evidence, you mean something quantitative that can be measured by our physical scientific instruments. It's simply not possible to measure the metaphysical using physical instruments.

This can be equated to quantum mechanics, string theory, and M-theory. Just as the spiritual can't be measured by our current technology, neither can the 7 spatial dimensions above our familiar 3 or anything smaller than the Planck length. Their existence is only accepted via mathematical plausibility, and NOT proof. If you refuse to accept their existence, you can continue living your life without any negative consequences, and you'll never notice them. While not quite the same as the concept of the soul, the point still stands. Neither can truly be proven, but that doesn't discount their existence entirely. Oftentimes in science speculative leaps are taken at something that could very well NOT exist just because it could provide a solution to a problem.

Objective quantitative evidence can't be provided to prove the existence of MOST things we as rational beings accept to exist. Circumstantial evidence, while less 'potent', so to speak, is evidence nonetheless.

I don't wxpwct anyone to believe or accept anything. It has been on the news before, and there has been years heaped on years worth of evidence of unexplained phenonema that can be classified as supernatural. As for scientific journals; scientist refuse to believe in anything that can not be explained. They ignore everything that can't be proven or labeled. All attempts to show the falsity in many cases have, well completely failed. Here, I will post some links for you.
