Last year I had someone very close to me pass away. Ever since, they have occasionally appeared in my dreams. Unusual dreams and at time inappropriate as well. What I am getting at here is, what does it really mean? When the dead invade our dreams in unusual ways. Why can't our subconscious just let them rest in peace? Also what does the dream actually mean. Is it the dead trying to speak to us through a dream? Could it be merely coincidence that the dead shall reappear in our dreams?

Here is an excerpt from a man named Kevin Wilson, who wrote an intro in relation to Sigmund Freud's Theory on Dreams .

Freud maintained the notion that the dream fundamentally acts as the guardian of sleep. When we go to bed, the curtains are drawn, the lights are turned off and in effect we are attempting to disconnect from our reality by extinguishing all external stimuli. During the night, the mind protects the sleeper from being disturbed by reacting to further external stimuli (noise, temperature, light, the need to urinate, numb arm/leg, pain, etc) as well as all internal stimuli (emotions, fears, dissatisfaction, desires, previous day's activity) by manufacturing dreams.

Freud believed the dream to be composed of two parts. The manifest and the latent content. Freud suggested that the manifest content possessed no meaning whatsoever because it was a disguised representation of the true thought underlying the dream.

On the other hand, the latent content holds the true meaning of the dream - the forbidden thoughts and the unconscious desires. These appear in the manifest content but will be disguised and unrecognisable. Although in rare cases the manifest and latent content can be indistinguishable (Freud referred to these as 'Infantile dreams').

I wanted to know other peoples interpretation of the above intro. I have Freuds book the Interpretation of dreams. I know how he feels everything in our dreams is their for a reason and is someway explainable. So then there must be a reason why the dead do invade our dreams. If the dream acts as a guardian of sleep then what do nightmares do? I consider some of the dreams of the person who passed away last year to be nightmares in my oppinion, because of how bizarre they were in content.

I am including the above video, because the song : In the Shadows, In the Light by Enigma, helped me get through last year, when the person close to me passed on.

i think the dead apear in our dreams after they pass in a way of communicating or sometimes relaying messsages to us that they were unable to do when they were alive.

I dreamt of my mother the other night, a very sad dream, and I wept in my dream and in my waking sleep. They were cleansing tears affirming my sorrow at her final betrayal.

I think dreams are deeply revelatory. Most of Freud I do not agree with; sometimes a train going into a tunnel is a wish to come out of the darkness and not a wish for penile penetration.

In my dream, my mother was not communicating with me. She's dead and lost her chance.

I was communicating with myself.

I think that sometimes the dead are trying to speak to us but other times it's just our own subconsius minds doing it. But yes I do think they try to speak to us.

The only dead one that I knew that visited me was my mom's cat Elizabeth. Shortly after she dissapeared from the house, I would dream that she was comming back through the backyard to come back inside. I guess she was just checking on her humans to make sure we were alright, or maybe just to check on my mom. The weird thing is that she visited me only, not my mom, who she was attached to.

Watching drunk people, and people that are mentally Ill, I have witnessed them conversing with Friends from their past.. I have watched people hallicinate as well. Behavioral science is breaking ground over these very things. I know children who chat with NA Na in their sleep.. I feel that is related to that person being conversive to the child while alive. Imprinting routine comforts, and wisdom on the child, that echo for the attentive child.

sigmund freud again lol... i do childcare and he is one of the main theorists lol...

i think dreams like yours could partly be you trying to register the fact that they passed away... then again they could be telling you messages from that person : )

I feel that the dead does communicate with us in our sleep. Maybe for our comfort or closure even for warnings of things to come.

Yet I also feel that our brains are so programed to certain people in our lives that once they pass that our subconscience has a hand in it as well. Our mind is so complex that there really is not an exact explaination for why people have their departed in their dreams or night thoughts.

I do believe that they do send us messages and warnings in our dreams we just need to know how to disifer the difference between them and just our thoughts or memories of them though.

I also had my mother in my waking thoughts and I was overwhelmed with sorrow the other day, my dad says it is my subconscience trying to help me to grieve for her passing . Maybe he is right so who really knows. I just know all I wanted to do was cry and my thoughts were of only her.

Freud also suffered from Oedipus Complex... amongst other things. Seriously, I only mean to say that while I do agree that anything is possible, I believe deeply that more often than not, we subject our minds to events that we swear are truth... but, sadly, it's the manifestation of an amalgam of memories that becomes -- what he take to process as a live memory.

So, nope. No dead in my dreams, at least.

As in, how dare you move on happily without me? Have you let go of this person yet?

Its possible that they still have someting to say and find a way in through our energy path which is the third eye. Our third eye is the path for channelling energy and thought. It is the spire for ESP.

I think the dead are trying to convey a message. My husband recently had a dream about a dead doll watching him. He thought it was my father saying to watch over us. Everyone looks at dreams differently. My thought was that someone was watching him. My thoughts are that dreams about passed ones bring me some comfort and peace. Like what was said before, a sort of closure. "Their" way of saying, I"m okay, don't worry about me.

Personally would agree with many here as often it is a way for those who have passed to communicate to us. Often it is that my dreams are invaded by ones that were dear to me that have since passed on. Those are the dreams that I tend to analyze the most for fear that something was trying to be expressed and that it might get missed.

Usually the dead invade our dreams in order to tell us something.

A warning
A secret
An update

Et cetera.

Usually it happens in the case of the dead being close to the living person.

I yet donot know if it is the dead or the minds locked doors creating the illusion of someone from the past, yet the mind and its power are not yet fully explained and many may be intuned to recieve messages from the otherworld. yet skeptism says the illusion of the mind.
