"What If God Was One of Us" performed by: Dilana, accompanied by Erik Eldenius at Norma Jeans in London, Ontario on October 18, 2008. The God Save Dilana acoustic tour.

What if God was one us? What is he was just a stranger living amongst us. He could be a vampire, a drug dealer, a writer, a philosopher or just about anyone. What if? What what that mean? I am not by any means religious, rather spiritual. Still everytime I hear this song, and I take it with a grain of salt, but the lyrics do make me think. God could be female, for all we know. I don't know if he exists but somethings out there. Any thoughts on this, please feel free to share.

I also wanted to add, just as the song suggests, what would you say to god if he was one of us, and you were to have a chance meeting? What would you ask him, if you could to his face?

You ask a complex question and I'm a simple soul but I'm going to give it a go.
What if god was one of us??
"Right"... so let's start by trying to wrap our heads around the math and the science of life.
The creation of the universe was so finely balanced that it was unlikely to have occurred by chance alone. If the expansion rate of the early universe was just a trillionth of one percent higher than it was, the universe would have expanded too rapidly for solid matter to form at all. If the expansion rate had been just a trillionth of a percent less than it was, the universe would have collapsed back in on itself. In either case there would be no stars, no planets and no life. But supposing it did result purely by chance, it certainly wouldn’t have been spot on the first time, in which case we can assume that the universe kept trying again and again until it reached that perfect balance. Here we have a situation whereby trillions and trillions of attempts would be required to get it right.
Unless the universe could somehow learn from its mistakes – then it would be able to achieve success much more quickly and easily. This scenario suggests that the universe must either be self-consciousness or have been designed by some intelligence that exists beyond the psychics of the known material universe.
The eminent mathematical physicist Sir Roger Penrose calculated the chances of a life-supporting universe happening by chance to be 1 in 1010^123. Let me try to put that number into perspective: 1010^3 is a 1 followed by a thousand zeros, 1010^6 is a 1 followed by a million zeros and 1010^9 is a 1 followed by billion zeros. These numbers are practically impossible to imagine, but 1010^123 is so big that it is totally inconceivable to the human mind. So with odds of only 1 in 1010^123 it can be said with absolute certainty that a life-supporting universe could never happen by chance - close the case on science and darwin.

Now to realize that the universe is not the product of coincidence we don’t really need calculations at all. We just need to look around and reflect on the perfection inherent in life, the universe and everything in it. If life only exists biologically where do thoughts, feelings and emotions come from? Their very existence seems to imply that there is more to life than just biology, that there is more to life than just survival. If life has no higher purpose, why does it strive to go on, and why did it even begin in the first place?
So let's introduce my own theroy into the fold, if you enter in the concept of reincarnation and the need for the spirit to experience the psychical aspects of life, then the universe may not be an accident at all – it could be that it was formed solely to support the purpose our spirits and souls needed! which returns us to the starting point which is what it has always been - a cycle of believe
So is God one of us... or is it all of us??

Excellent points, LordSeverus... well done.

Additionally, as I have pointed out in previous forum topics here, were everything simply the result of random chance and the concept of Intelligent Design entirely alien (no pun) and without precedent in the Universe... then why is it we are driven to design and creatie?

If intelligent design is found no where else in the Universe, why is it then that we as a species are driven to create music, art, writings, philosophies, and countless other areas of creative endeavor that have absolutely nothing to do with our survival and everything to do with some unexplained inherent drive to create? Where would such a strong drive come from if found nowhere else and is without precedent anywhere in the Universe?

My point is perhaps so simple and basic that most seem to step right over it: If intelligent design is found nowhere in the Universe, then we ... ourselves the by-product only of random chance by such a belief ... would not and logically could not be in possession of a capacity found nowhere else in Nature or the Universe in all the trillions of parsecs of space and the eons of time surrounding us... as Evolutionary Theory claims to be so. Thus, one of the stronger evidences that Intelligent Design is indeed a principle found in the Universe long before our arrival in it is the fact that we are, ourselves, intelligent designers.

And thus, also as LordSeverus alludes.... perhaps we are numbered among those known as Creators who voluntairly chose to enter mortality so as to learn and grow beyond that as would otherwise be possible. Perhaps indeed we are here to learn to control, channel, focus, and optimize our physical senses and potentials and thereby hone our spiritual characters for greater creative uses hereafter.

Religion isn't supposed to be discussed in the main forums but the song was originally sung by Joan Osborne and here are the original lyrics.

If God had a name, what would it be
And would you call it to his face
If you were faced with him in all his glory
What would you ask if you had just one question

Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home

If God had a face, what would it look like
And would you want to see
If seeing meant that you would have to believe
In things like heaven and in jesus and the saints
And all the prophets and...

Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home

Tryin to make his way home
Back up to heaven all alone
Nobody callin on the phone
cept for the pope maybe in rome

Yeah, yeah, God is great
Yeah, yeah, God is good
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

What if God was one of us
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home

Just tryin to make his way home
Like a holy rolling stone
Back up to heaven all alone
Just tryin to make his way home
Nobody callin on the phone
cept for the pope maybe in rome

*imagesinwords edit* Religion can be discussed, what is not allowed is 'Posts that ridicule the philosophical tenants of any religion'.

Thanks for posting the lyrics. Like them up until the last two. The thought behind the song and the question was brilliantly answered by Jesus, who was an everyman, yet not, kind of Blade predecessor when you really think about it.

I'm thinking about NASA photos of roiling balls of gas and misplaced matter labeled by scientists as possible detritus from the Big Bang. I'm also thinking about black holes and expanding galaxies and mobius strips and time folding back in on itself. Arriving at little ole earth with our flesh-encased liquid mass and the variety of form that life takes it's hard not to think that we don't have that God spark within each of us.

Read somewhere that those whirling leftovers from the Big Bang might eventually burn out or settle down and transform into something useful.

Transformation is key in my personal philosophy. Connection follows closely. Like Michelangelo's painting of the Hebrew god sparking the life force in Adam, what would happen if each proud owner of the God spark recognized what was within and reached out to others?

Nothing new in what I'm saying except that Transformation and Connection happens here, right now. We own it. The quandary is what to do with it.

I know Joan Osbourne originally did the song, I just liked this version better. I only put this topic in here to get people thinking and well it has :O) So my goal was accomplished.

*imagesinwords edit* I like Dilana better too :P She was great on "Rockstar: Supernova", eh?

It's about if God could be, or is just one of us, how would the world be different. Also what questions would you ask him, if you could to his face?

I never said I believed in God I simply wanted to stir up thought. Not appease everyone else on this site, thats impossible. I don't know who are what I believe in. I just wanted to stir thought and based on a few replies to this post, I believe I sure have. If you don't like this thread, than don't reply to it. Enough said.

I am sure everyone has seen the movie: Dogma...

Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, etc.

It was a basic retelling of the whole Jesus of Nazareth story, save for with a twist.

Now, in the movie "God" in his/her human form the first time around, was an aged gentleman who looked like a timely fellow. Laid back, enjoying the world that he had made.

At the end of the movie, "God" appeared as a female. A jolly young lady who had once again...Not a care in the world.

I think this movie is a prime example of what "God" would do if he/she were to appear on earth. Hell, a good game of chess, a playful game of pool...The ultimate negotiator in a fight, getting the antagonist(s) to back down and join him/her in a good conversation.

The point that I am trying to make is that when any individual or group throughout society makes a movie about what "God" would supposedly do, they almost always put the figure as a rebel. In my mind, I always picture the figure as a somewhat mellow, stoner type.

If "God" were walking among us, I am sure he would watch us and just offer advice instead of being involved in anything. Just my thoughts on this subject.

Good question.

For myself, I dont try to see God as specific to any one religion, for all I know, God is schitzophrenic and answers to all the names and identities applied by Mankind. Why not? Why does there have to be only one answer, one identity, one explanation?

Considers the gazillions of individuals, human, animal and plant on this planet, each one a miracle in successful design, that alone defies statistical possibility. So yeah, I believe Something is around, quite possibly loitering about too. If I came face to face with It, I'm not sure what I would ask. But I might say thanks.

god is the FORCE from star wars:

inside all ceatures, the prime mover, to use for good or evil, active stronger for better or worse in the awakened.

'nuff said - i am speaking metaphorically, and the more i define said topic, the less valid it becomes... so i'll wrap it up like this -

god is everything everywhere transcending time/space

If God was someone around us, I think he would look like that hobo with the cardboard saying “end of the world is near”… hehehe! An intermediary person, the balance in nature, he would just see where are the pure hearts around him, testing, watching, studying the behavior around us. I’ve read In the bible that ”only those of pure hearts believers will be the only ones that will hear the Trumpets when the end is near to come and will be saved while others will remain ignorant at the dawn of the Apocalypse” I’m a reader not that of a bible believer, but I do believe in “Intelligent design”, in base of my interpretations of the bible, not only the believers are to be save, I believe also non -believers that live the life as in what is right to them and others even on those things that are wrong are the ones that can be “saved” (as in the text interpretations) So I will have to agree with ~DecemberNemesis~ on this, it doesn’t have to be the Christian religion to be the only right path, or the only subscription to salvation, it’s all the things, religions, ideologies, theories that make us use our consciousness and gift to rationalize what is good for us and the place around us, the achievements of our existence, may it be music, architecture, a poem, a civilization, dance, a discovery, someone smile. Not everything can be perfect and good, or else we would have more suicides than anything, a world without violence will just be so freaking boring, I believe we need both sides of the coin to maintain a balance I order to satisfy our primitive nature in correlation with our emotional aspects.

What would I say to God if he was one of us - among us? That would be very hard - so many questions, so many answers. He'd have to have to allow me a lot of time for all the things I'd ask about.
I guess my first question would be - "Why allow all of the evil to continue in the world?"

Interesting questions, i doubt the world would change at all if he/she/it were walking amongst us,as he/she/it has already created the world therefore i'm sure he/she/it would be able to conform to the limits this world sets upon us(i.e. gravity wise and also i imagine he/she/it would exude a fair amount of energy/light whatever so i'm sure that'd need to be considered/revised for the public to not feel too).As for what i'd say? After the initial shock and awe wore off(i.e. 20 years later) i'd ask him/her/it if there is a better way to manage human frailties and flaws, then thank him for allowing me to make my own mistakes and to be able to learn from them by aging....then i'd ask him if he wants a beer and that i'm skint so it's his shout!

It is only religion if you bring religion to it by tagging a word that is generic. God is not a name but a title for something some believe is one thing or another and can only be religion when you make it specific. I think it would be interesting if there is a creative being outside of ourselves walking amongst us. It makes me think of the show Brimstone in a way which is related to the other end of the spectrum but at times is very humorous due to viewpoints stated. If we mention Jesus and others then yes, we are specifying one particular religion and shouldn't be brought up. I have the Joan Osbourne version somewhere and thought the song was interesting. Whether we call it a force or consider there to be a creative being, I heard the math of it associated to randomness and I believe something is behind it all but what it is technically I don't know unless I do go into religious aspects of it. Why would any entity with such a great deal of power wander around here when there is so much in space and possibly other places we yet barely know much about? If I was a being like that I would branch out much farther than spending time on this little spot of time and space.

God(s) are said to watch over the people all the time, no matter the faith or belief one holds. At times the gods have said to play the roles of humans out as a game.... So some say that god(s) are always around.

vvSoulshroudevv says:
If "God" were walking among us, I am sure he would watch us and just offer advice instead of being involved in anything."

I state:
Even though I see the Christian God as a deity who likes to punish humans for acting upon the free will he gave us, I have to hope that if he were to come down here he would infact just watch us and offer advice.

As for the original question, I guess it depends upon which God we are discussing. It seems by the flow of the conversation that many people interpret the question as meaning the Christian God. But what of the others? Well, I imagine that would depend upon what they were the God of. Does that make sense?

Well, based on the fact that I am coming from a Christian view, some will disregard this...

Jesus, the son of God, was one of us, but he was the perfect child that any parent could hope for, but in the eyes of some at the time he was just as bad as a drugdealer, or a gangster, he was a blasphemer, ruining the views of their children. Depending on what such views would be then yes God could be such a thing. God is all around us in those who believe. He can be in drugdealers, prostitutes, suicide victims, ect... God can be anywhere at anytime. If God wants to be there, He will be, as man or woman. He can also send His angels. So to the fact that if God were one of us... He is... we were created in His image.

As I said some will disregard this and I do not blame them...

i would have to agree with Imageinwords on this one. if he was here walking with us. then he would not be god. he would be one of us. nothing more nothing less. he would be just like me and everyone else. as far as how the planet came to be. i for some reason find it hard to fathom some one making everything in the universe that seems to go against everything we have been taught growing up. and then there is all of these other stories and claims that say god and the bible was nothing more then a propaganda move by the church to make me people do what they said.

i mean to many of the recent findings in the science about the big bang verses creation fight have come to light. and to me i feel as if god is nothing more then a child with an ant farm. but thats about all i will say to that one. i am not saying that eh belief systems of Christianity is wrong. i would have to say that would be an oxymoron to say that the bible did not have some good rules to live by as most of the laws to date are from that book.

In a way, Letting go of any deities, and unsubscribing to beliefs, left me with a lost, worthless feeling. While I brushed death, it came clearer to me(and others relate this to me as well) that death, is it. We may linger in sentiment, and in the mannerisms of our offsprings generating.

I can be just as stoked over dying to a simple biochemical hallucination, to
Add so many conditions, and then to amend those conditions in the expanding teachers.. To inquire as to what god would do as a human is
Rather egotistical, in the hands of the pious.

Dabbler I understand what you are saying....Yet I have come to know faith as a structure to ones life. Believing in deities of any faith based religions is hope that something has more for the people than what they see and touch and explain.

I am a christian-well spirtual in more of the term I hope that there is more of a plan to the structure of this life than what is seen. Everyone has different aspects on what their life is made up of.

I do not preach to others or try to persway them to my thought. That is their life to find the way for them. Much like the structure of your life and others on what you may believe in or not. For the structure of my life and someone elses is totally different.

I think there is alot here on Earth that is yet uncovered. and the plasible plans of evolution is yet unknown. But society in some cases choose to belief in their god and a plan yet shown to humans and give them a gleem of hope on the way life is going in troubled times.

We all are at fault for our own actions in the paths of life we take. yet some look for guidance and assurance that the choice we made was the right one.
