They are what they who visit them make them out to be.

'If you believe, its haunted.'
No, the person just believes that to be so, likewise the non believer.

Sensationalism always brings about attention seekers. Mayhaps the castle needed money and therefore the caretaker(s) and or owner(s) went on to advertise such happenings for publicity?
Haunting or no, the sensationalism is there for other reasons as well...
Where I work in Edinburgh, the South Bridge Vaults.... DEFINITELY haunted. Too many strange things happen down there. It is more absurd to think that it is not haunted.
I think determining if a place really is haunted takes time, and plenty of sensible or sceptical to visit it. Sceptics will not expect anything to happen to them, and if it does, then more likely that place really does have resident ghosties. By sensible people I mean those who do not think that every breeze that passes or tingle they feel is something paranormal. Genuine psychics are great, but extremely hard to find. I've met alot of 'psychics' in the last year who were obviously full of it. Paranormal investigators... no.
I suppose it is all a matter of evidence. It is easy to say that a place is haunted and make up stories, so I imagine that there must be alot of hoaxes out there.
There are probably plenty of hoaxes out thre, but to disregard every account of ghosts or presences just because of a few crazy sensationalists would be ludicrous, of course some people are going to try to capitolize by making up a ghost and advertising it just to get peeopl to come to that places, but as said before if you have a group of skeptics go through blatant non-believers and they come out swearing it's haunted, then somethings going on.
Has anyone here taken the Melbourne (Australia) Haunted Tour of the City yet? It's wicked and yes I do believe in ghosts NOW.
It does not matter if it is a hoax or not .. Castles themselves are pretty no ghost is needed.
I agree the castles are beautiful..but i also cant see why they couldnt be haunted..:)
Many strutures have said to be haunted yet no proof of this has come to be and alot of others use it as a ploy to bring the tourists in.
I would imagine most castles are haunted to some degree. The history of each is unique and were ghastly tortures and death are high in numbers, some souls are sure to remain lingering.
Your lucky to have castles, most buildings in the USA that are highly haunted are old insane asylums, mental hospitals, and aging facilties were abuse, neglect and death were common place during those years.
Castles are so fabulous.
Such atmospheres are conductive to impressionable minds.
Both the skeptic, and believer are appeased by such tours, the earlier being amused by the edgeness of the later.
It is possible that it is haunted, yet whether it is or not is not as interesting as actually being able to spend a night there, enjoying the fears, the atmosphere, the vibrations of the place, the memories stored within its walls, for what else is a haunting.
Take in a bunch of skeptics, not tell them them history of the place and if something occurs and is record by them then I figure you might has some proof. Unless the human psych plays tricks on them, most are still afraid of their own shadows in the night.
Well here in Australia we have our fair share of haunted sites. Sometimes they are a hoax to rake in tourist dollars. But some are genuine places haunted by the past.
I think it is just completly for tourism, I mean someone is going to pay way more money to see a haunted castle than just an old castle where royals lived. I mean I personally belive in those things but I doubt theres anything there.
Depends on the evidence that is supplied to prove or disprove it. Without it there's really no debating whether it is or isn't. You just asked and stated a personal experience thus making it difficult to prove or disprove

I think it's a hoax to get tourist in there to get their money
Living in Sussex I was taken by my school to many of the local castles on your list.
I live only about 6 miles from Pevensey Castle, about the same distance from Herstmonceux Castle and 5 miles from Hastings Castle and yet I have only visited each of these once in my lifetime and they all have legends of ghosts.
It took me over 40 years to get to Hastings Castle - and that was only because a friend's child refused to go into the caves there (which are haunted themselves) with his brother so I ended up taking him to the castle while his mum and his brother went into the caves.
There are also supposedly hauntings of Battle Abbey which is built on the location of the Battle of Hastings in 1066.
I do believe in ghosts.
Castles have a lot of history so yes i think castles can be haunted..
I like it's a little of both. Events of a violent or tragic nature & circumstance can cause a haunting, And good Pr never hurt for those that aren't. So All is a 50 to 50 propitiation.
I have never been to any of these places so cannot give my opinion as to whether I believe them to be haunted or just a hoax.
Sometimes stories are passed down from generation to generation and usually gets bigger with each telling. I wonder if nothing was ever mentioned about these places and the events that took place there if they would even be viewed as haunted. Or is it the appearance of the structure itself?
i personally dont know if it is haunted cuz i havent been there.so i cant say if it is or not- but i would defintely would like to find out on my own
I'm sure some places are legitamently haunted, but once the hype is on, everyone one wants in on the cash ticket of tourism, which ruins those that are real.
