I was thumbing through “The Vampire Book : The Encyclopedia of the Undead” by J. Gordon Melton and I found this very interesting story on page 469-471 about the Marvel Villain Morbius. I thought others might find this a interesting read as well.
Here is a excerpt from the beginning of the story.
“Morbius, a Marvel Comics vampire character introduced in 1971, was the first original vampire introduced after revision of the Comic Code allowed vampires once again to appear in comic books, from which they had been banished in 1954. Michael Morbius, according to the story, was an outstanding biologist whose work had won him the noble prize. He was engaged to be married. However, he had contracted a rare blood disease. As his condition worsened, he began to work on a cure. He developed a serum from vampire bat blood and treated himself with electric shock. His efforts finally stopped the effects of the disease, but he experienced unwanted side effects; he grew fangs and developed an intense thirst for blood, which led to his vampirizing of his best friend. He also developed some superpowers, including the standard heightened strength of vampires and flying ability because his bones became hollow.”
"Morbius was introduced in issue No. 101 of Amazing Spiderman, and his encounter with Spiderman launched a series of battles with various Marvel super heroes”
I have a few Spider-man comics that features Morbius. Very interesting character. They call him the "Living Vampire" because he actually never died and was resurrected as a vampire. Morbius was supposed to be featured as a major character in Blade 2, but Marvel decided against it so they could make separate Morbius movies, and instead created the character of Jared Nomak for Blade 2. So it seems that Marvel may still make a Morbius movie in the near future.
*grinds teeth*
A morbius movie!? Hmm...
He was never really developed as a character in spider-man, besides being a punch bag for most of the others, as he was near impossible to kill...
But, interestingly, he did become something of a tragic hero, teaming up with Blade, Ghost Rider, another 'true' vampire and a few others to form the Midnight Sons, one of the best Marvel cross-over saga's I ever read.
But, a movie? Please don't make me loose more teeth...
Trust Hollywood to go for it though...Kevin Smith got it right, they're going to make every comic book character into a movie that they can until we stop going.
I actually enjoyed watching a few of them. Punisher (new one) was a pretty bad ass flick, same with the blade flicks.
oh yeah I remember Morbius... felt kinda bad for the guy... weird way of feeding though
I think he had his own book for a while. He was more of an anit hero.
I think that is tragic, as he never intended to become one, it just sorta happened and then he tried to use it for 'good' causes, even when the people he was helping hated him and may never even have known that he saved them...
Should this not be in the top box?
Yes it should be in the top box, especially now after you created that cool thread on not liking the blade movies.
LOL
I was looking for a Dracula Lives set for you eviladam and came upon that Blade actually got his own series in the nineties (after I stopped collecting), wherein he gets turned into the daywalker by Morbius! damnit...lol
This has nothing to do with Morbius, but it's still usefull info. on the timeline of Blade.
Blade "the vampire slayer" first appeared in a 1973 issue of The Tomb of Dracula. Blade appeared in 70 issues of The Tomb of Dracula until 1983 when vampires were again banished from Marvel comics. It wasn't until 1989vwhen blade was re-introduced in a few Dr. Strange issues. Then after a breif stent of a revival of the Tomb of Dracula in 1991-92, Marvel came up with the Midnight Sons series. In this sereis Blade, Hannibal King and Frank Drake formed the Nightstalkers. This lasted until 1994 when Blade FINALLY got his own series. It only lasted for 10 issues but never the less it took marvel over 20 years to give it to him.
Ahhh...yes. Frank Drake - he was Dracula's Decendant!
All comes back now...lol
Yeah, Tomb of Dracula was called Dracula Lives in the UK..sorry about that lol
It was kinda like the 2000ad format became, with multiple characters and storylines in the same issue. So, you could get Werewolf, Moonknight and Man Thing alongside Dracula...
But I had no idea that Morbius turned Blade into a 'real' vampire...cus he should have been immune!
I am taking this way to seriously...lol
I didn't see that Blade series. I do remember one from around the time of the movie, but the one issue I flipped through failed to appeal to me. Blade had on blue spandex, a sword, and either armor or one cybernetic arm.
Also the one issue of Morbius that I read had him saving a hooker by(naturally) drinking some one's blood when he tried to kill her.
Morbius is awesome. His best appearance (in my opinion) is in the Spiderman/Venom game "Maximum Carnage" for the SNES. He just flew in as a powerup and ruined everyone's shit.
It was badass.
Why do you think they had different titles for the Dracula comics in those countries? Do you know if the two were printed differently, as in different art and dialogue.
I think it was down the paper size and the inclusion of the additional stories. British comics have always been a different size...
*shrugs*
he is one of my favorites i acttualy wrote a really big fan fiction on him and i have a lot or the comic books and i have a morbius action figure sitting on my mantle lol i want his like shreaded looking cloak think tho :)
I've never been into the whole comic thing except for the cartoons that were based on the books..Now I could get into those fast the whole wonderwoman cartoon was amazing then the tv show about her was great then I loved hulk way back when..Then the x-men and the lkist goes on and on lol..
isn't morbiu the spider-man strnger dude? the one with the black suit & is stringer than sider-man? w/e I am lost now... :P
I never heard of that Firebender, gonna have to look into it.
Thanks for the clarification Stabb, I guess every country has their own ways about things.
I gotta get me one of those action figure's.
The character appeared in some of the more recent Spiderman cartoons from what I recall, similar study with hte vampire bats, as well.
A movie would definately eb nice-- I miss seeig vampire movies.
Firebender you're thinking of Slingers. Spider Man was actually disguised as all four characters during a story line in which he was wanted.
Then there was the Slingers series. I own all 12 issues. I'm not proud of it, but I can't pass up the bargain deals at the comic shop. They're pretty much unreadable, but I did see the black suited character(shade I think) Its a girl in the series.
I remember Morbius very well from when I was little......I wonder what would happen if him and Vampiralla had a child together?
That would prove some interesting childbirth for starters!
Vampirella was kind of lame. She actually got a lot better in later years but her original origin was rediculous.
She was from a planet called(I'm not making this up) Draculon, where blood flowed in rivers much like water here, and everyone was a vampire.
