What do you know, feel experience about Mirrors... why is it said in some that we can see the future in the mirror.. or Satan himself if we summon.

What do you know about Mirrors... and why is the reflection at times something we do not like to see if it not of ourselves.

Any information you have on scrying or any Mirror belief.. please attach .

Mirrors are subject to distortion, a hyper-expectant person is subject to induced delusions.

Well Minxy,I think mirrors can be creepy at times.There are TONS of myths and legends surrounding them as you know.Thing is,when i think about them and take into account all the stories and stuff,I find myself thinking why.Why would they be so associated with this kinda thing.So I start thinking about the silver they contain ,the fact that Silver is one of the best conductors out there and thats where it gets interresting for me.Im almost convinced that just any mirror wont do for scrying and that it all comes down to the plasma frequency/resonant quality of the silver thats in the mirror.Not super natural,but super conductive.
To make a long story short.:)

Its just that there must be at least a little something to this,because these type of stories have surrounded certain objects for centuries.But since I dont believe these things are supernatural,I find myself looking at differnt properties of these said objects.Properties that are part of our natural universe.Whether it be a crystal,which is highly conductive and emits certain frequency signatures , are conductors and extremely condusive to the transmition of information ,or silver,whats not to say that because of this,there really might be more to it than we realize.

I only use a black mirror for scirying, and should used for that purpose alone.
Most only say it's superstitious because they don't know how to perform it properly.
You can't be a skeptic and incant magic, it's a self conscience contradiction.
However, water is a better source than a mirror.

Not sure about the superstition of breaking a mirror, did once and defaintly ended up with several years of horrible mishaps though!
Which does make one ponder that issue!

i used to work with glass and mirrors for a long time now i broke many of them and havent had any bad luck maybe because i was a glazier for so long protected me lol but i will tell you this of the thousands of mirrors i had worked on and hung there were a few that didnt feel right am not sure why but even the other guy i was working with was very happy to have them off the truck and hung and away from us was weird why all of us had run ins with mirrors that were like that. Glass in general is a very weird thing i have seen tempered glass explode for no reason sitting on the racks with nothing around, I have carried glass doors and had them explode for no reason also seen mirrors just fall off the walls for no apparent reason or crack all by themselves so i do wonder if it isnt the medium the glass itself that has these properties or mayhap the silvering in the mirrors but I happen to feel that some mirrors have a little bit more going on so to speak then others but thats my thoughts

You may know the answer to this, is, or has mercury been used in making mirrors?

Way back, mirrors were polished silver, or metal, and only the wealthy had them.

Indeed they were Dab.They used an amaglam of tin and Mercury. It would have been the silver that would have made them expensive but you know,you make a good point because mad hatters syndrome could have been happening with owners of those mirrors.

In a mirror we see our reflection. We see our faults and we see us backwards. We see what we summon before us. Ourselves. As for Satan and demons. They are everywhere and nowhere. They are seen where they want to be seen. Rather that be in a mirror or in your nightmares or even in your friends and family. Satan has over all command on this godforsaken place and can do and be as he pleases.

Mirrors are said to hold the spirit of the dead or capture them. My families tradition from italy is to cover the mirror during a death of a family member so the soul does not become captured in it. Superstitions of the old.

If you stare into a mirror and focus right above your head sometimes you can go into a state of meditation and see things in the mirror.

Rain Witch, that practice places pressure on veins in the eye, and when the eyes shift, the pressured fluids compromise sight.
Creating blurring, distorted images, string like " apparitions".

Some parlor tricks utilize the same method, with mirrors, or windows.

There are so many myths and legends about mirrors all because of their reflective qualities.

I agree with a previous post that a lot of these myths are suggestive and your imagination could conjure up some pretty wicked things. Like the old bloody mary or candy man.

One I found interesting was with the Japanese culture, they don't keep mirrors in the bedroom. The belief is that when your soul gets up and walks around at night it could see itself and get trapped in the mirror or it could frighten you so much to see yourself out of your body that you will die. So anything reflective in a bedroom should be either removed or covered up.

I actually did this to improve the energy in my bedroom to help me sleep better at night and found it worked rather well.

Yes cadre... we do the same here in England, and we also open a window so that the soul can travel out, and doesn't get caught in the glass.

I'm fascinated by the story that Mirrors used to be made of Amalgam now, I am aware once the Amalgam is set it doesn't emit the Mercury fumes? we have amalgam in our tooth cavities, it's only poisonous when it's at it's non hardened state.
However, silver is a powerful conductor, and I'm aware some spells are cast with powders and silk on the mirror itself ( a hand held mirror).

As I said in my last post. Some people are easily persuaded to seeing things that are not there. For example, delusions and hallucinations by a schizophrenic individual.

Minxy,the layer in those mirrors isnt stable, because the tin corrodes and forms crystals.At that point, the mercury slowly evaporates as the crystals grow,finally reverting back into liquid mercury,which evaporates and then condenses on surfaces nearby.. From what I understand of it .
Which is interesting because it was right around the same time those type of mirrors were being made....Didnt most of the superstitions and myths about mirrors also begin right around then?
But on another note,While silver is a great conductor ,glass is a great insulater.

I'm just going to keep this simple. Personally I don't think there's anything special about mirrors in the least. In the past people didn't understand light and being able to see oneself must have been quite amazing and then to use mirrors to distort light and do tricks. I think it's just something that's been passed down in our psyche and then individuals, especially youths, get all excited think there some magic to them and cause themselves to have a delusion or hallucination. That would then give them some "proof" of something, they tell other people and it spreads.

We need to be careful about looking to hard for explanations. Sometimes a mirror is just a mirror and a delusion is just that. Our minds can be tricked, it doesn't mean you're crazy or a liar it just means you were tricked...it's quite human.

LOL oh you are so right Zav.my...eYess.
But you know how I am,Ill try to find something that could account for it to be so,or some reason that might lend credence or be the crux of a myth or legend.
Minx,it was stated above that a grandmother used to cloth over a mirror at funerals and such.I got to thinking about the old spanish mirrors and the mercury...how perhaps it got into enviroment and caused peeps to see things,and the mirrors made it worse when they looked into them with their faces all distorted etc...Mad as a hatter!
Just a thought

The last time I was flipped out looking into a mirror, was at a fair in Utah, they had the new fangled' mirrors that are set in a specific manner that reflect the subject without inverting the image. Example, when letters appear in an unaltered mirror they reflect backwards, in this mirror they read the same.

Oh yes O, poisoning from mirrors did happen a lot back in the day. In fact, several people died installing the mirrors at the Palace of Versailles due to the mercury. I think each mirror has something like 4lbs of it in them.

The same with hatters, people that worked with gold (especially plating) and other professions. Mercury aint something to play with lol and I'm sure it can be to blame for at some of these "experiences".

Mirror Magic
By Eliza Yetter. ©2004.
Originally published on ESPress (now extinct).

Since time began, people have used reflective surfaces for scrying, folk magic, and necromancy. The reflective quality of polished metals, stones, smooth waters, and modern-day mirrors generally symbolize self-knowledge, clarity, the moon, femininity, and truth. In the case of necromancy, the mirror represents absorption (of the soul) and then reflection (a return or regurgitation).

It was the belief of our ancestors that the reflection was a part of the soul. This belief is still found today in our superstitions and customs. For example, when a mirror breaks it is believed that the person who broke the mirror will have seven years of bad luck or that the last person who looked into the mirror will soon die. To counteract this ill-fated omen, people used to throw a broken mirror into a stream. The belief was that the running water would wash away any remnants of the reflected soul that resided in the mirror. Today some people will carefully pick up a few shards of the broken mirror and rinse the pieces under running water before discarding of them safely.

While breaking a mirror accidentally is bad luck, breaking a mirror intentionally is not. Magically inclined crafters will often break a mirror on purpose to create mirror and colored glass mosaics to hang on the wall or to display on a tabletop. These mosaics are made to either repel (for protection) or attract energies. The general rule when creating these mosaics is that if the desire is to repel negative energies, lay out the protective symbol using the broken mirror bits and use the colored glass bits as filler. If the desire is to attract a certain energy, make the symbol or design from the colored glass and use the mirror bits as filler.

Within some European families, mirrors are still covered with cloth or turned to the walls when a death occurs in the home. This is to prevent the soul of the deceased from becoming trapped in the mirror. However, there have been some reported cases in history where a person of the dark arts intentionally traps a dying person's soul in a mirror. Such soul mirrors are accredited with oracular powers and were used by sprinkling chalk dust over them after asking the trapped soul a question. The pattern of the chalk dust on the mirror would reveal the answer.

Witches would, and still do, capture the image of the moon in a mirror for oracular purposes. These witch mirrors were used for scrying and were made from any number of different materials: polished stones, polished metals, a bowl of water, or a glass mirror.

The Kabalists had their own method of using polished (reflective) metals for scrying purposes. Each metal mirror had its own day of the week, overseeing deity, and purpose as can be seen in the chart below [Footnotes 2 & 5]:

Weekday -- Planet -- Metal -- Purpose of Question

Sunday -- Sun -- Gold -- leadership, politicians
Monday -- Moon -- Silver -- dreams, mysticism
Tuesday -- Mars -- Iron -- laws, conflicts
Wednesday -- Mercury -- Quicksilver (in glass) -- money
Thursday -- Jupiter -- Tin -- success
Friday -- Venus -- Copper -- love
Saturday -- Saturn -- Lead -- secrets, discovery of lost

Halloween night is the most popular time for using the mirror to discover a future mate. These Halloween "games" provide a fascinating insight into mirror magic and scrying as it was used among the common folk.

Apple Slices: At midnight sit down in front of a mirror and cut an apple into nine slices. Eat each slice from the tip of the knife. Before you eat the ninth slice, the image of your future lover will appear in the mirror and ask you for the final piece of apple.

Hair Combing: Stand before a mirror in a candlelit room and comb your hair. You will soon see the image of your lover-to-be standing behind you.

Walking Backwards: Standing outside and holding a mirror in your hand, walk backwards while saying:
"Round and round, O stars so fair!
Ye travel and search out everywhere.
I pray you, sweet stars, now show to me
This night who my future husband (wife) shall be!"[Footnotes 1 & 4]
The image of your future spouse will appear in the mirror.

Cellar Stairs: Hold a mirror in front of you while walking down the dark cellar stairs backwards. You will see your intended's reflection in the mirror.

Mirrors are most commonly used for protection. They have been sewn onto clothing to repel evil energies and they can be found made into jewelry to avert the evil eye. Smaller, cosmetic mirrors are often placed in windows to send back the negative energies a family might be receiving from a neighbour or from a person who lives farther away.

Reflective magic, and its resulting superstitions, has been with us since time long forgotten and will continue to remain with us for as long as we have eyes to see. Its broad appeal, its use among both common people and the magically inclined, ensures its use far into the future.

The first step in scrying is to pick out the medium that you wish to scry with. There are many choices. They range from the simplest (a clear glass filled with water) to the expensive (a large, clear crystal sphere). There are many variations in between.

You may have read other articles on scrying either on the net or in a book. Let me state that all of these writings are wrong, or at least partially. wrong. Every article that I have read states the author's preferences. In other words they champion what worked for the author. You may, and probably, are different. I can not over-emphasize that you should do what feels right for you. We are all individuals who have a different psychological makeup.

The following is a short list of what I have read:

* You must use an absolutely clear crystal
* You should use a crystal with inclusions (defects)
* lead crystal will not work
* lead crystal is the only reliable medium
* The crystal sphere should be 2" in diameter
* the crystal sphere should be at least 3" to 4" in diameter
* stare at the crystal without blinking
* do not focus on the crystal, but look "past" the crystal. Blinking is all right

This list of contradictions could go on and on, but I think you get the idea. You need to get what feels right to you. I personally prefer the scrying mirror for several reasons, the first being cost. If you do not want to make your own please e-mail me to discuss a custom made scrying mirror. This does not mean that I would not or could not use another medium. It is just that the black faced scrying mirror is what I feel most comfortable with. The following is a list of mediums that have been used. There are more possible variation than I have listed here:

* Crystal sphere
* Crystal skull (carved)
* Mirror (could be a black mirror or a silver mirror)
* Glass of water
* Bowl of water colored with ink
* Candle flame
* Coals of a fire
* fire smoke
* Pool of water
* Fog or mist over water

Various disciplines mandate a consecration ritual before using the scrying medium. On a purely psychological standpoint this makes sense. The subconscious mind must be convinced what you want it to accomplish. This may be accomplished through ritual or meditation. Polishing the crystal or mirror while thinking about what you want to accomplish will be enough.

Anything that will induce a state of altered awareness should be done. For beginners dim lighting is a must. Incense may be burned and/or meditation music may be played. Do what feels right for you. A side note is that in past centuries incense played a more important role in inducing altered states than in the present time. The reason for this is that the incense was inhaled. This decreased the amount of oxygen in the blood stream. The brain will enter an altered state during periods of oxygen deprivation. I do not recommend this procedure due to possible health risks. It is only mentioned as an historical note.

The actual procedure for scrying is simple and straightforward:

* Get the room ready - dim lighting, incense, music, etc. that you want
* Place the scrying medium on a table at a convenient level
* A dim light (candle or?) should be behind the viewer. To start out this should be the only light in the room.
* Perform the progressive muscle relaxation exercise
* Look at the mirror (or crystal) in a relaxed manner, focusing about 5" past the surface of the mirror (this may or may not work for you so try other methods)
* You will blink but do not be too concerned about it
* Keep your mind blank except if you have a specific question to ask
* Do not scry for over 20 minutes at first

The images may appear in different manners. They may just appear or they may be preceded by a "cloud of mist" forming first. The mist could dissipate or morph into the images. The images could be symbols of the subconscious or may be actual pictures of events, past, present or future. As an example of each person being different, the first visual impression that I receive looks like flying insects rotating on the reflective surface of the mirror.

This is the basics. Your success at scrying may take days, weeks or months to accomplish. You may be successful the first time that you try. Practice will make perfect, so keep on trying if you do not succeed at first. If your feel that you are at a dead end, try something different. It may help. Keep practicing. Remember that nothing worthwhile in life is easy. Happy visions!

crying mirrors are a divination tool for looking into past lives, and past, present, and future events.

The black scrying mirror, also known as the "magic mirror" is a powerful metaphysical tool. It can reveal to the user secret hidden knowledge and clairvoyant ability and can act as a portal to other planes of existence in our universe.

One of its most famous known users was Nostradamus, who could tell by staring into the mirror events far into the future.

The following notes have been extracted from a book dedicated totally to scrying mirrors, and they serve useful for the individual seeking to successfully use a scrying mirror for divination, as well as the many other metaphysical benefits.

* Scrying Mirror Rules
* The Scrying Ritual
* To Begin to See
* Charging the Mirror with Light

Nostradamus utilised the Scrying Mirror as a tool to predict the future
Nostradamus used the Scrying Mirror as a tool for predicting the future

Scrying Mirror Rules

1. Always keep the surface very clean using alcohol and a soft cloth.
2. Never use it for anything but its intended purpose.
3. Do not let others look into its surface, except in ritual context. Keep it stored in a silk bag when not in use.
4. Practice the visual exercises described following until mastered.
5. Keep the working area clean and free from any disturbance.
6. Generally, scry using the mirror at night, preferably during the full or new moon, depending on the operation. The mirror can be used at any time, but tends to work better at these points.
7. When indoors, light two votive candles, one on each side of the mirror. Use white or colored candles appropriate to the work: blue for healing, purple for psychic work, orange for communication, and so on.
8. Burn a lunar or psychic blend incense before working with the mirror.
9. Place the mirror on a wooden table or altar with a clean cloth beneath it and be seated on a wooden chair in front of it, or if you prefer, assume a comfortable asana on the floor with the mirror before you.
10. Extinguish all light sources except the candles and/or moonlight.
11. Allow nothing to reflect in the mirror's surface. It should appear as a dark tunnel or window.
12. Before starting, always create a sacred space to work in. Cast a circle of protection or visualize the area surrounded by white light and protection from false or misleading influences - call your guides and guardians to protect the working.
13. Keep a journal to record your experiences.

The Scrying Ritual

First, clearly decide what you seek or are trying to accomplish in the working and prepare appropriately. Then prepare the work area carefully as suggested previously.

Once you are ready, close your eyes and begin to relax; feel every part of your body releasing, relieved of all tension. Visualize your circle of protection and know you are safe and in control of all that happens within it. Begin to breath rhythmically and fully; try a count of four in, hold four, release four, four in, hold four, release four and so on. Feel yourself entering a light trance surrounded by sacred space, removed from time and the material world. Silently call your guides or guardians of the work, invoking the Goddess or calling angelic presences, spirit guides, watchtowers, astral guardians or whatever you prefer. Reaffirm your desire and the purpose of the work.

Now open your physical eyes and gaze into the mirror; remain relaxed and do not hesitate to blink when necessary. Relax the focus of your eyes but remain alert. After a while, the surface of the mirror will begin to change and fade; a dark mist will appear.

Your inner eyes will now open, and the journey into the mirror begins. Remember that the inner eye sees inside the mind, through the magical imagination. Most people when scrying do not see the images appear with the physical eyes on the mirror's surface but see within the mirror and in the mind's eye. The mirror acts as a focal point, a gateway within.

When you have completed your journey or work you set out to do, begin the return to your body and ordinary senses. Breath fully and deeply, and remain still until you feel you have completely returned. Now close your eyes and remember all you saw and felt during the scrying or journey. Review your entire experience mentally.

Write it all down immediately in a journal kept specifically for this purpose.

To Begin to See

This is a very important exercise to master if you are new to scrying or are having trouble receiving images. It will aid your "visual imagination," which allows your psychic and physical eyes to see clearly together. It gives clairvoyant strength.

Sit before your mirror and begin to imagine objects on its surface, one after another. You should try to see these images clearly in the mirror with your eyes open, just as if they were there in reality. Try simple shapes or colors first. Hold onto the image of each shape, object or color one minute before dissolving it and going on to the next. For example, use a red triangle, a yellow square, a blue circle and silver crescent; see them appear in the mirror using your firm imagination. For best results, do this exercise every day for 15 minutes until it is mastered.

This exercise is well worth the effort; it gives magical discipline and strengthens the inner eye so visions can come with clarity and ease.

Charging the Mirror with Light

To charge and empower the mirror with light force is a simple but powerful process. It should be done frequently, especially just before using the mirror, so as to ensure you see correct visions, connect with positive energy and do not experience interference.

First, you must imagine that white light is collecting inside your body, being channelled down from the crown chakra. The body becomes a vessel filled with light. Remember to breathe fully, deeply and rhythmically. Now stand in front of the mirror and direct the palms of your hands toward one another. Imagine that the internal light is now moving into your hands, forming a ball of condensed white light between them. See and feel this clearly in your imagination. When ready, begin to project this ball of light into the surface of the mirror, purifying and enlivening the mirror, filling it with magical force. See the light "soak" into the mirror. This process needs to be repeated until the mirror feels "full."

This process can also be used to give a special or programmed charge to the mirror. Follow the steps preceding and create the ball of light between your hands, then mentally project your desire into the light before projecting the light into the mirror. This technique can be used for healing works and self-improvement. You can also charge the light with a specific color or vibration - whatever can be felt or imagined can be put into the mirror to aid the magical energy. The empowering exercise can be used for other magical operations as well, such as charging other magical tools and the giving of healing light to another person. All it takes is a strong desire and powerful imagination.

Locking the charge into the mirror is accomplished by willpower. When the light has been absorbed into the mirror, state in your mind and with all the faith you can muster that the charge will remain as long as you require it. To release or remove a special charge, simply reverse the procedure, pulling the light out of the mirror into the space between your hands. Then disperse the energy into the atmosphere through the imagination. Do not draw it back into the body - see it return to the universe.

a mirror...a lustrous surface with the ability to bounce back light waves, much as echos are the bouncing back of sound waves.
i know all the science behind it...but how is it magical? i dont personally find anything of mystery in mirrors, but if there is more, please explain. i try to keep my mind open and like to learn what i can.
thanks
~W~

There are a few prop rig effects one can present using a mirror, and an unsuspecting mark.

The Lasting Image being the spookest.

Can you imagine the histeria the moment we realised back in the day, that we could make fire froma mirror or glass?

Oh to have been a fly on the wall.

mirrors have cast beliefs and legend across man civilisations, and cultures.. a fascinating vessel.

I recommend working your way up MinxyMoon.
Start with water in a clear container. Then once you got it down move to smoke, then Mirror/earth component then perhaps you can even master Fire, the hardest element.
