I have experienced this myself and was wondering if anyone else out that has and what your personal experiences of it were. Please feel free to message me privately in regards to this as well if you don't feel comfortable posting it in the forum.

Blessings,
Bella

The Symptoms of Kundalini Awakening

While the awakening Kundalini may be a dramatic experience, the resultant shift in consciousness may be accompanied by years of physical and psychological upheavals. The process of Kundalini awakening can vary greatly from person to person. Some have intense physical symptoms, while others experience mainly emotional or psychological symptoms. It is as if the new energy invites a spring cleaning throughout the entire system, with unresolved physical or emotional conditions coming up for resolution and release. The life transforming changes which accompany a Kundalini awakening cover the entire physiological, emotional, mental and spiritual spectrum.

Dr. Greenwell ("Energies of Transformation" -1990) has noted seven categories of symptoms which have been observed during Spontaneous Kundalini awakening.

1. Pranic movements or kriyas

Prana is the Hindu word for vital energy. Thus as intense energy moves through the body and clears out physiological blocks, a person may experience intense involuntary, jerking movements of the body, including shaking, vibrations, spasm and contraction. As deeply held armouring and blockages to the smooth flow of energy are released, the person may re-access memories and emotions associated with past trauma and injury.

2. Yogic Phenomena

Some people find themselves performing yogic postures or hand mudra gestures which they have never learned or could not do in a normal state of consciousness. Similarly, they may produce Sanskrit words or sounds, or have an awareness of inner music or sound, mantras or tones. Unusual breathing patterns may appear with either very rapid or slow, shallow breathing. Some people may not breathe at all for extended periods.

3. Physiological Symptoms

A Kundalini awakening often generates unusual physiological activity as intense movement of energy releases toxins in the body. Symptoms include apparent heart problems, pains in head and spine, gastrointestinal disturbances and nervous problems. Internal sensations have been reported as sensations of burning, oversensitivity to sensory input, hyperactivity or lethargy, great variations in sexual desire and even spontaneous orgasm. Symptoms can be erratic, coming and going without provocation, but are generally unresponsive to medical treatment.

4. Psychological Upheaval

Spiritual awakening offers a direct challenge to the primacy of ego consciousness and the myth of separation. It brings with it a challenge
to move beyond the unconscious responses ruled by drives and instincts and remove ego consciousness from the centre stage of the psyche. It comes as no surprise that such a challenge produces a period of confusion and unbalance. People find themselves beset by inexplicable emotional states as they move to clear out unresolved issues. The emotional roller coaster may swing from feelings of anxiety, guilt and depression, through to compassion, love and joy, with accompanying bouts of uncontrollable weeping.

5. Extra Sensory Experiences

As perception expands outside of consensus reality, people experience atypical visual phenomena, including visions of lights, symbols, entities, or review of past life experiences. Auditory input may include hearing voices, music, inner sounds or mantras. Even the olfactory system may be stimulated with perception of scents of sandalwood, rose or incense. There may also be disruption of the proprioceptive system, with losing a sense of self as a body, or feeling bigger than the body, or out of the body, with the resulting confusion and disorientation.

6. Psychic Phenomena

With the opening up of psychic abilities, a person may experience precognition, telepathy, psychokinesis, awareness of auras and healing abilities.

7. Mystical States of Consciousness

A person may shift into altered states of consciousness where they directly perceive the unity underlying the world of separation and experience a deep peace and serenity with a profound knowing of wisdom. In some cases, the state of emergency due to psychological upheaval is so acute that it resembles a psychotic episode. Many clinicians still regard phenomena associated with spiritual emergence as indicative of pathology because the signs are so easily confused with the indicators of psychosis, mania, depression, schizophrenia or borderline personality disorder. Many people undergoing spiritual emergency are misdiagnosed and treated with suppressive medication which further complicates their process.

As a Hedonist, I aim for " Peek Sensitivity" to grant my body, and mind
uninhibited sensation, when this exerience can be shared it makes it all the more intense.

Thanks for sharing Bella

It seems to me that Kundalini can be defined as "the lightening of ones wallet" since it looks like you have to buy books or take classes for every Newage gabblygook there is. Man, enlightenment should be tax refundable.

Kundalini is a dormant energy within most peple.

In Hindu mythology, Kundalini is a serpent goddess who lies asleep at the base of the spine, coiled three and a half times around the first chakra. Her name is Kundalini Shakti, and she represents the unfolding of the divine Shakti energy, the energizing potential of life itself, a living goddess who enlivens all things.

Under certain circumstances, the Kundalini energy awakens and begins to rise through the body, piercing and opening the chakras as she moves in her undulating, snake-like fashion. As Kundalini releases stored and blocked energies, her movement can be quite intense, sometimes painful, and often leads to mental states that seem out of this world.

Circumstances that stimulate Kundalini awakening are many and varied, but are usually triggered by such things as extended periods of meditation, yoga, fasting, stress, trauma, psychedelic drugs, or near death experiences.

Kundalini is a condensed, primal force, similar to the potential energy found in water. When released, it creates a vertical connection between the chakras by opening the subtle channels known as nadi, most specifically, the central channel that moves up the spine called sushumna. If we put water through a small hose at very high pressure, the end of the hose will undulate like a snake. Similarly, the intense energy of Kundalini undulates in the body as it rises through the chakras.

Kundalini can also be seen as a result of the chakras connecting to each other. Theoretically, as the chakras enlarge, the spinning of one can enchance the spinning of the one above or below it.

Kundalini is basically a healing force, but its effects can sometimes be quite unpleasant. Such effects may last for minutes, days, months, or even years.

I'm surprised at how many are uneducated on the Kundalini. It's not some new concept or practice.. and I would hope that anyone interested in spirituality, energy work.. would at least have a basic idea of what it is. The Kundalini can be awoken rather easily with regular practice of some Tantra and of course, Kundalini Yoga. The process is ongoing, with the energy clearing out more and more blocks within ones body. The difficult part comes when this happens to fast. Many find it hard to deal with "all their shit" being stirred up within their subconscious minds, brought up by the raise in Kundalini energy. Slow and progressive work with Yoga makes this much smoother. Taking a good look at limiting habits, and dealing with suppressed emotions is key.

I fully agree Fire Serpent, this is why I posted this because there are many people who aren't educated about it and can have this happen to them (spontaneous Kundalini Awakening) and not know what is happening to them like me. It really caught me off guard and flipped my world upside down because I didn't know much of anything about it. Knowledge is power and your best friend sometimes when things like this happen. Even though it was a very difficult wake up call I must admit it has been the most amazing experience as well and am glad that it happened (happening still ) but it would have been nice to know more about it before hand lol.

I haven't really heard of Kundalini before but I am interested in this. I might have experienced this before and not that long ago either. It did involve the use of ecstacy and I assume that would be considered a psychedellic drug. It was a very personal experience.

Last time I took E I was with my ex so I guess the trigger of this awakening would be him. I've gone through a few things that would be considered traumatic with him so Bella, your post makes sense to me. I will definitely look into this and I would really wish to experience this without the use of drugs, I do not recommend.

In my experience I was listening to Tool by myself, trying to relax and concentrate on my senses. Sort of meditating, trying to get in touch with my energies. I was just feeling a rush of different emotions going through me and after awhile I came to a personal revelation. At first I felt sadness and confusion but looking within I found love and happiness. After that I just felt peace within myself and peace with what life has put me through. Everything just seemed very clear and everything that has happened to me recently made sense. It was a very good feeling, it felt as though I released all the negative within and I found my own personal answers. I felt empowered.

There's more to it though but this is as best as I can explain. It might not make sense to many of you but for the sake of this post, I shared my experience of what felt like an awakening. Felt more of like a revelation to me.

Yes it is an interesting topic but there are those that don't believe in chakras or kundalini. I am not one but it isn't New Age. It is just that the New Age movement got interested in a wide rage of ideas. Many of them physical and consciousness expanding but much of what they got involved with had prior roots elsewhere. I understand the concept. Wouldn't that be interesting to research to see if there is a connection Lord Wolf but then there are those that never have awakenings and some who firmly don't believe they ever existed.

Kundalini literally means coiled. In Indian yoga, a "corporeal energy" - an unconscious, instinctive or libidinal force or Shakti, lies coiled at the base of the spine. It is the serpent fire rising through chakras.

Here is a brief and more rudimentary definition:

Hinduism
Energy that lies dormant at the base of the spine until it is activated, as by the practice of yoga, and channeled upward through the chakras in the process of spiritual perfection.

Any and all awakenings linked to spiritual ascent and an increase in awareness are caused by the various stages of the Kundalini energy. As Shakti begins to flow through blocks, more potential is possible. Working through ones emotional blocks, habits, fears.. will free up this energy in a gradual way. So, any degree of psychic ability is related to the Kundalini and Shakti moving through ones body.

Wait wait, hold the phone...

Are we saying us Unedgamakated folk will suffer grave instances if we do not believe in something that can only be created, envisioned, and believed in our mind? So like those who do know about this Kundalini, if happened to trip over a log, would fall like a feather to the ground, where as I would do a face plant. Well shoot, I have to sign up today.

I know that was harsh, but it felt like a few were amazed that there could have been anyone who never heard of this thing, that sounds very similar to other New age things. I am sure that isn't the case right? Not looking down on people who don't understand?

Sorry again, I tend to be the super hero, mostly against my better judgement.

Im not quite sure where the poster above me felt as though anyone were being condescending or appeared to be "looking down on people who don't understand?"

Perhaps the sarcasm should be put aside, an open mind would be a more adequate trait to display in a forum such as this. Words from a feather to a brick.

Hmm odd for the past six months I have been going through all of these. With the physical aspects of it I have been to the Dr. many times and no one has found anything wrong with me. Though I have been going through extreme amounts of pain fallowed by an almost euphoric high... Odd... I need to look into this more. Thank you for posting.

If you believe in Kundalini; and not all people do, even the experts who work with Chakras, its been around for at least three thousand years. There are zillions of stories dating back then of students trying to force this energy awakening and ending up; crazy, suicidal, burnt-out, physically sick, and just plain dead. It was a very great concern to the teachers back then. Now we teach anyone who hears about it. Without the spiritual training and teaching that should go with it. What's wrong with this picture.

It help lead the LSD movement back in the sixties.

Any awakening will happen as growth continues, Physical, Mental and Spiritual through the Chakras in general. There is no need to focus on a metaphorical serpent located at your base of your spine.

Reiki Masters do use a symbol that does indeed work in Kundalini energy. And is also serpent like in design but we don't use it un-guided! It's also the reason why I refuse to teach levels one and two at the same time or weekend.

I don't believe in making warnings for most stuff but this topic I will. Don't abuse it.

I had to read the warning a couple of times but I have to agree on both levels but I was born in 1947 so my experiences with much of this may be different. I know there are many who are involved with Reiki but I have the attitude of the lady above about some things being money related from personal experience. I am sure it isn't that way everywhere.

As I posted above to clarify and not to hurt anyone's feelings, there are differing views on this topic depending on generation and background. There always is. I took Ancient Asian Civilizations, which included India, in college and we went into all of this. I later took chakras in a class and associated information and yes paid for it but it was minimal. It was just for the teacher's time and effort and this was connected to a spiritualist church. I learned of the serpent fire as well as talking to people from India online much later about various topics. I am sure that not all believe quite the same way. What I posted above in another name is what I know right or wrong from my own experiences. There are downsides to anything and as to whether this concept is factual...who knows...it is just one of many beliefs. I try to respect beliefs that are associated to spiritual practices. Whether they actually happen only each individual would know and my outlook is anything is possible. I like this topic because it is stretching the mind to wonder and think about other's cultural viewpoints. There are those as I mentioned before who do not believe in the chakras or kundalini. I stay neutral so the ideas expressed could happen but how would anyone know really? That is my question, how would you quantify it?
