i have wondered how many people work with animals for spells or in covens, or in general .

i have one and not many people i know who study many things dont practice working with a familar or probly havent found one yet,

i think the best thing that helped me work with mine is a book i have called cat spells by claire nahmad. it gave me a general direction

funny thing is mine is every where with me if i take a shower she is there litarly, if i try to be with my ork shes having a fit out side my door to get in, if im sick shes sick, only problem with mine is she hates my hubby with a passion.

she also has a knowing if something i guss to say ghost like who is in the area she reacts ,

who here also has one, or did have one, and how did you learn to work with yours

I think we are working with "familiars" not "filimare".

Familiars are great animals to have and are rare to find. Great pets are not always familiars. Yours has a case of dominance with you. You are your cat's, just as your cat is yours. This can be the sign of a familiar.

The major thing, however, is how well your cat works with you in ritual. If the cat is disruptive, yowling for attention and in general disrupting the flow of your ritual, then it is probably not a familiar. I had to learn that about my dog. He is my buddy and fur baby, but is no familiar. He has let me work twice with him when he needed healing for an upset tummy.

If your cat works well in a ritual setting, doesn't disrupt with its presence, then yes, you might have a good familiar on your hands. Familiars are not disruptive in the ritual. They have an innate sense of what's happening. If you have a cat, it is good to work with cat goddesses and goddesses or gods related to cats. You have a natural connection with those gods, as your familiar is a cat.

As for learning how to work with your cat, that I can't help with. I've never had a familiar before. :)

how has found a familiar and what was your method of traing, mine im sure is diffrent from others and was wnating to find out other peoples methods

you don't actually train a familar, they just seem to know what is needed of them. i've had two of them so far: like most street punks that work in the arts, my first was a rat. now i have a very small cat that knows just where she needs to be when i am doing a ritual or anything of the like.

I've never had one but I know someone who did, it was also a cat. He had it soon after his awakening as a child. He practice with the guidance of his mother who was handing down a family practice of the craft. He said that it would wait for him after school and follow him around everywhere he went. Funny thing is that he wasn't a pet. He was a stray the just so happen to be around when he was practicing his craft. Unfortunately on one of there daily run abouts the poor kitty got ran over by a car. My dear friend said he felt it the struck of the car and his passing and it hurt. He said he never wanted another familiar after that. It affected him a lot.

mine is my dog Ginger she can tell when I'm up to something. need I say more!

my cat works very well

I had a boxer once he would always watch out for me and I didn' have to talk to get him to obey, he just understood, I miss him quite a bit, his name was King... he would always follow me and sit out side of doors I didn' want him in and would usually only not like people if they had impure intentions

I have heard that the bond between a familiar and its human counterpart is very strong and can cause empathetic pain if one is injured or killed.

It's a deep link that probably goes beyond even just beyond the casual pet. My dog is my guardian and my little watchdog.

I have had a familiar before, but I never had to train or work with him. He simply defended me and warned me if he thought there was danger. I am not sure what, if anything, I should have done differently to take advantage of this familiar. I just viewed him as my Guardian and friend.

I have 6 familiars.. 2 dogs and 4 cats. they just seem to know what i need or don'y need. you can not tame that.

I am not sure if I have a familiar I really havne't looked into it. But after reading this post some of the things described i feel. So maybe i should check into it

Mine is a cat... I have had her since she was 6 weeks old.

Mine is my dog. She will not enter my sacred space when the circle is cast, but rather stays outside of it, and is very quiet.

As a young one I had a dog for 19 years I beleive I was more hers than she was mine. She would beat the school bus to school and home again. She would wait outside the building while I was in college, she brought me up well and protected me during my youth. She is sadly missed.

i used to have one he was my cat/ best friend. he helped with everything and the most common ritual we did was a sleeping spell for a goods night rest. worked wonders but i had to get rid of him when we moved

funny - the moment i started to read this thread, my cat jumped into my arms and spread herself across my chest. i think i know what she thinks on this subject.

My familiars are quite different. I have only one. And that is the Fox. any fox follows me where ever i feel unsafe. they will always protect me.

my familiar si my ornery ol black kittie pooter poo...... yes thats what i named her...... she is always stuck to me like glue ...... and usually tolerates the rest of the house hold but dispises strangers... when someone new comes in she growles at them until they leave......and as far working her with my spells and rituals i dont really have a choice cause shes planted on my altar till iam done and she wont leave by any means...... its funny sometimes i wonder whos working with who with her......lol

familiars arent "used" for anything... but they can be very helpful when you are in a tough situation! I know someone who has a familiar which is a cat. His cat follows him everywhere, and shows him a sense of love that i am indifferent to. I have never had a familiar, and I do not know what it is like, but it seems like a sense of loyalty on a severely different level than just a good pet.

when i was about six, i had a cat. she wouldn't let anyone touch her but me. she'd growl and bite and hiss at anyone who hurt me and she'd always follow me around.she used to curl up in my hair and sleep with me. that was before i believed in the paranormal. now that i look back on it, i wouldn't exactly call her a familiar, but a guardian.she never let me out of her sight. when i was nine, i had to move and leave her behind and she got so mad, she clawed out a dog's eye.

when i was younger i had my dog as mine...

she never left my side when i was home and always seemed to know things before i did...

she is greatly missed...she was not only my familar she was part of me...

I think depending on wich part of the craft you are working with depends if you need a familiar. When you meditating and such having a familiar is good because it keeps you from getting lost and then loosing your self.

when i was a baby, my dad's cat used to sit in my pram and attack any stranger who came too close to me.

I have always had a cat for a familiar. I've never had any disruptions with them. My last cat familiar, Bart, was the most excellent familiar. He always was by me, and we were like one. I never have really "worked" with a familiar. Like someone else mentioned, the animal belongs to you and you belong to the animal. That is the magic!

I have a cat as a familiar and he's pretty effective. I've had him since he was six weeks old.

I will have to take a look at that book. I have a cat familiar. She has been in my life for about 9 years now. I had to feed her and care for her from birth. We are very close.

I have a dog that is my familiar.

My cat Ash is my familiar, named for her sooty shadowy color. I consider her more of a spirit friend and companion--though she is like an overgrown baby and spoiled rotten.

When working with her as a familiar I use her spirit as a messenger essentually. She wears a small charm on her collar that I can enchant for a specific purpose. As cats wander both worlds of spirit and men it makes her an excellent delivery service for the girl with too much to do already lol

I have a few familiars, One that i know for sure that I have is a cat, I keep seeing a cat that is not mine, but it has distict features that I think are rare, This cat appears to be following me from town to town.

Oh and used to have a frog as a familiar, named fred. He was tight.

i have a familiar... my sisters cat (she's gone to college so he's been sticking by me more and more). mostly he's a companion for conversation, he's actually fairly understanding... but i've never tried any spells involving him other than communicating with him and seeing through his eyes everyonce in awhile.
