Following the Dreams threads, I got to thinking about the benefits between these two forms of Therapy / enlightenment.
The Question.
Would YOU, as a patient, prefer Hypnosis over NLP (NeuroLinguistic Programming) as a therapy?
For those who don't know the difference, i will be more intrigued as to your thoughts, as you will be "fresh" to the ideas.
Hypnois is a way of "tapping in" to the Subconscious mind, so that, ultimately, a fear, habit, problem, etc can be erased, altered, or ignored.
I feel that this CAN present problems, as one would STILL have the fear, habit etc, but not react to it.
For example. If one is scared of spiders, Hypnosis will override the natural response of withdrawl, running away, but will, instead, implant a suggestion that the "spider" is not real, or just a bit of dirt.
This COULD present dangers in other areas.
NLP, on the other hand, is training the brain to think in a completely different way, and in a similar way of "tapping in" to the subconscious, but TEACHING it, rather than fooling it.
NeuroLinguistic Programming (Neuro=Nervous/Brain Linguistic=Language Programming=Teaching) tends to use the rational side of the mindset to change the way it thinks. THUS getting OVER the problem, rather than working around it.
As in the example above, A fear of spiders; NLP will attempt to condition the mindset to analyse, for itself, the RATIONALE behind the fear (habit, problem etc) and therefore conquer it.
Although this is a longer way to go about it, do you think it would be a better way, seeing as it is YOU that heals yourself, rather than somebody implanting suggestions to change the way you think?
This thread is open to all. I have no qualms with anyone discussing their opinions as long as they fairly listen to everybody else's.
Thanks.
I like what I'm hearing about NLP. Very novice a the whole idea, but I know hypnosis has not worked for me.
Thanks!
Hypnosis CAN be quite an aggressive form of treatment (imho, it pushes the conscious and subconscious minds against each other with conflicting information about the same thing!)
With STAGE hypnosis, i have no qualms, as the suggestions are temporarily implanted, and not long-lived. One needs to differentiate and understand the difference between stage hypnosis and hypnotherapy.
Believe it or not (i didn't know this), but NLP has been around for quite some time...
Does anyone remember those "teach-yourself" language courses, where you play a tape when you went to sleep, and woke up the next day supposedly speaking and/or understanding fluently, another language, or hobby etc?
THAT was the first stages of NLP as it is today! Subliminal learning, i think they labelled it! And NOW (of course) it makes sense!
Remarkable!
I've already learnt something from my own thread! LoL
sounds like a good plan!
You mean both TOGETHER, as a joint therapy? or you would be happy using either method?
Personally, i can see good and bad arguments for EACH, so i am completely impartial.
I would just like other views on it who may not know much of one, both or either methods!
Or indeed from those that do! :)
I once tried hypnosis to kick a cigarette habit. It didn't work, so I would be most interested in the NLP concept, I guess I'll ask my doctor about it next visit.
NLP, all the way. If hypnosis works, I would use it. But I know from others' experiences that NLP was incredibly effective. Hypsnosis just seems like the old, outdated , methods of astrology to me.
Aince I have done any "hands on" research with it, I can't give you too much more hard core evidence besides friends examples.
If I ever do write about it or experiment with it, it will be here at http://smokingfag.livejournal.com.
Also, here is a nifty article on some uses of NLP. http://moneydick.com/books/Psychology/Christopher_Hedberg_-_Neuro-Linguistic_Programming.doc
That opens a document. Or, click the secon link starting with Christopher here:

Hope this helps with something!! Thanks for posting... I LOVE NLP studies.

NLP is something that sounds very interesting to me. I have to do more research on it, but this could be used in numerous feilds and with children with mental problems that could be helped with mental training. Very nice thread..
They both seem reasonabley good ways to overcome fears etc. I guess it depends on how you want to go about it yourself, NLP might be better for some however others may prefer hypnosis.
I think there both equally as good. just differnt ways of solving the same problem.
I cannot be hypnose, but if I could I would nto want too, as I think it is too dangerous, not only because of the fact of the alteration that could be deeper and more then the person hypnosed would want or agreed to.
The NLP on the other hand I think is the best way as it wont modify the person her or himself, still I tired it ..well my mom tried it when I was younger and it did not work. Still I think it is the best of both ways.
NLP , sounds like a better way to go if one needed this sort of intervention.
I had never heard of NLP before, but having tried hypnosis to lose weight with no result, the NLP sounds more intriguing. It does seem to make more sense to get to the root of a problem in order to fix it. Does the language sleep-program work? I'd love to try it!
Hi guys. thanks for your input so far!
WinterMourn, to answer your question, like Most alternative therapies, you have to want it to work. You have to be in the right frame of mind in the right surroundings.
From experience, it is MUCH more rewarding to use NLP over a longer period of time, rather than a single sitting.
By concentrating the learning procedure direct to the "memory banks", one gets a tighter hold of what has been programmed.
The audio programs worked as well as they were designed to, although i dare say they would be better now than they were then, with the advanced methods of relaxation involved in today's methods!
From the info given I would prefer NLP because I do have a fear of spiders and I don't want to avoid it since there are some spiders which are poisonous.....I would hate to ignore those....
I have seen NLP in action and find it a way better tool then hypnosis. In the early stages of it you can tell the fear is still there but it is less you can actually see the person processing the information about the thing they are afraid of and as the process goes on they fear is lost and you find the person laughing about being afraid of such a thing in the first place. Also you do not have to be in an altered state for NLP to be used and with that cut down on the danger of having someone with ulterior motives implanting something in your mind that you don't want there.
I perfer Hypno.. if that hasnst worked towards your benefit I suggust trying a meditation method before trying to go under to relax your body and mind.. It makes this easier for me
Who performs the NLP sessions and how is it done? Most of us have seen hypnosis performed: how does NLP differ in how it is administered in order to make it more effective? If it is the same trance-like state that occurs with hypnosis, I am curious then, how the trances between the two "styles" are differentiated.
NLP time and patients can over come i believe shortcuts, it may take longer and be harder to initiate, but then again, if hypnosis was more successful, would it not be the answer to most our problems?
sometimes.
But because of the way it works, NLP is more successful in the long run.
Hypnosis relies on "fooling" the subconscious mind into telling the conscious mind that all is ok.
NLP relies on learning more about the problem, by causing the subconscious to make the conscious mind analyse the situation.
It can therefore be said that if you want Hypnosis to work, you have to WANT THE RESULT. i.s if you DON'T WANT to stop smoking, Hypnosis is not going to work! If you WANT to stop, then it has a better chance of working.
NLP however, just makes you look at things from a more logical point of view.
Yes. It is actually best done with one's own voice, but it usually has to be scripted for the best efficacy.
Now that is odd, so what would happen if someone wanted to stop smoking but deeper inside then they know, they dont.
hypnosis on its own as a one off session is simply a short term solution, and has limitations. NLP would seem to be more long term - if it was proven to be effective. but think about it - NLP is the principle behind political correctness - the idea that by changing the words, you can change the attitude - and that does not seem to work.
it comes down to the age old question "would a rose by any other name smell as sweet?" if a law was passed saying that all cigarettes must now be called "death sticks" would that really affect sales? would it help people to give up? replacing the terms gypsy and tinker with traveler has done nothing to reduce peoples suspicion and intolerance. it may sway a few people that don't have strong feelings either way, but it does not change firmly held views and attitudes. i certainly dont see how it can help change behaviour, particularly when we are talking of addictions. nice idea - just doesnt work
An excellent thread.....I'm not sure if i can favour one over the other....I think it depends on the individual...Hypnosis is effective but you're actually fooling yourself as you have stated but then again NLP is a method by which certain things are solved inside your mind....
To each his own....
Neuro=Nervous/Brain Linguistic=Language Programming=Teaching
does this teach your brain to stutter????
er.... no.
Not unless that is what you so desire your programming to conclude with!!
Somehow, i doubt anybody would wish to do that to themselves.
To bring about another point as touched on by some respondees earlier...
Hypnosis is quite easily reversible, (sometimes good, sometimes unfavourable), whereas NLP, is a programming technique, so is a lot harder to reverse! (can you "Unlearn" to ride a bike?)
sorry i was jsut confused as to your description of it is all hence the question as when you have a nervous language problem this usually entails stutters. no offence meant and none at all to this wonderfully informative post.
LoL!
aha!
Ms Lilith. I apologise!
NOW i see what you saw!! Quite funny!
Nervous as in Neural / Of the brain / REAL nerves, as opposed to how you read it to be butterflies / heeby jeebies / anxious!
Thanks for clearing that up!
Drinks are on me!
:)
I believe both have merit, I have tried self-hypnosis and found it beneficial. I think it would boil down to personal choice. Some people can be hypnotized easily others can't so NLP would probably be more beneficial.
some people are resistant to hypnosis - but they would probably be equally resistant to NLP. i dislike NLP because it is nothing short of brainwashing, and that is questionable. i can see it would have some merit if certain words have negative associations which lead to behavioral problems, NLP may, in some cases, have a disarming effect. but basically it all comes down to the same thing - whether you choose hypnosis or NLP, you have got to really want to change.
i feel that it is better to take a more gestaltist approach. psychological problems are rarely caused by just one thing, so there can be no one cure. i don't believe in panaceas, and you really have to apply a combination of solutions to the problem. hypnosis is a fine tool, but not a lot of use just on its own. no engineer does all his repair work with just one tool.
TheLunarWolf cool can i have a jack n dr pepper then lol all this typing is thirsty work lol
I prefer NLP i think seeing as i head hypnosis and was not happy with the results.
I have tried hypnosis for several different things, and it never worked for me. But, from what I am reading about NLP, it seems this would be worth trying. Especially if it can help someone with something that debilitates their life. Like someone with agoraphobia. I am very interested in reading the news posts regarding NLP. Will keep checking back.
Obviously our minds were fromed in such a way as to accept suggestion. Why put the function there if it shouldn't be used?
When I looked up NLP it was almost as if someone was trying to sell me a juicer. It is very vague, and all of the descriptions used those typical, newage terminology.
I wouldn't like either, i don't like the idea of anyone being able to poke in my brain and change stuff whether i am in a state of hypnosis or not
If I could let someone poke my brain I think life for my children would be better. Nah really, I still think it is a great idea that could be used on special ed., and autistic persons. The application of NLP would help many people in the long run. Overcome phobias, dramas, and also help to function as a performing member of society.
I remember those teach yourself language cources while you sleep tapes that were available awhile back... that would be an interesting way to learn things...
i think I'd go with NLP.For me it would be a safer thing to me
